I agree that the first Mario gave doesn't control the best. Which is to be expected being the first game and all. But its about a million times better than Wonder Boy's. At least it didn't have a power up that actually made the game less controllable.

@unrandomsam

There actually are a handful of places in the world where that's not true. But that's actually part of why this is so stupid anyway and just helps prove my point. You have to accept the EULA to use the device. All of the devices i mentioned and more. And you just should because it probably isn't legally binding for you anyway unless you live in one of 5 us states.

Why is this a thing still. It's idiotic.

Do you have an iPod? A smart phone of any kind? Pretty much any commercial computer software? A credit card? Then guess what, you've agreed to far more restrictive Eula's. Nintendo's is way less strict than the ones for any of these things.

And guess what else. Those things don't work if you don't agree to their Eula's either.

If you don't agree to the EULA at time of purchase you are supposed to return it to the store for a refund. The EULA even says so. That's why there's no decline option. Not agreeing to the agreement means you're deciding you don't want the license, which means you can't use it.

This is just more of the dumping on Nintendo for doing things every company does crap that's been going on for at least the last year.

To the people who can't sign in:

I had a message pop up when I was playing hyrule warriors that said terms have changed and you have to agree to them again in system settings.

You might be unable to because of that. The error might just not have come up for you for some reason.

This seems fine to me. I bought all the pikmin dlc and this seems similar. Inexpensive and gives a tonne new content. (The pikmin dlc wasn't really tonnes of content per se, but getting platinum on all the challenges takes forever so my point stands.)

That is assuming "new adventure map" means what I think it does. From reviews it seems the old adventure map is where most people are spending the bulk of this game.

Maybe ubi would sell more of their multi platform games on the Wii u of the Wii u version wasn't always clearly the absolute worst version of every game and actually had effort put into them to make them good.

Performance issues on games that work fine on less powerful systems, releasing basic patches late if at all, no dlc support, missing modes sometimes for no adequately explained reason especially when those modes are on less powerful systems. It just goes on. And it's not limited to just the AAA releases either. Just dance is mixed for 5.1 on other systems and is stereo on the Wii u.

They did this to themselves.

People really expected them to follow the EU in new movies? A movie has to appeal to the broader audience, not just the hardcore fans who read all the books and comics and stuff.

Besides, star trek having an official canon never stopped its expanded universe from rolling on.

wombatkidd commented on Satoru Iwata Speaks Of The Need To "Redefine" ...:

People who are surprised or offended by this don't know thing one about nintendo in the first place.

Nintendo has never been just a video game company. At this time they also make board games, playing cards, and have other more out there stuff like being the owners of the Seattle Mariners.

Their incredibly expensive go board was news on this very site not too long ago, for example.

And they hired new people to do this: they didn't divert their current teams. The hiring blitz they've been on has also been news on this very site.

wombatkidd commented on Myth Becomes Reality As Atari's E.T. Cartridge...:

@Tender_Cutlet

A few things.

1. This was open to the public. People were watching this. So photos aren't the only evidence.

2. Atari cartridges don't have ANYTHING in them that bio degrades. They're made of metal and plastic. Even the manuals are covered in plastic.

3. Dirt won't make manuals look worse but water might... If they weren't in an incredibly dry place. The average yearly rainfall is only 13 inches, far too little to actually reach things buried more than a few feet down.

4. Modern atari isn't responsible for this. Modern atari is a different company that happens to be called atari and bought the original Atari's trademarks. The article we're commenting on even mentions this.

5. They dumped this in the city's landfill. You do know what a landfill is, right? I'll give you a hint: it's a place put aside specifically for dumping garbage.

6. You should DEFINITELY NOT burn atari cartridges. Leaving them where they are is far less destructive to the environment than burning them would be.

wombatkidd commented on Vita Overtakes 3DS in Tough Week for Japanese ...:

@Doma

It never fails. I make completely uncontroversial statements and people decide these statements are fodder to troll and flame me.

My original post about it boils down to three points, none of which are anything anyone ever argued about until now.

1. A large amount of non gamers bought the system for DVD playback.

A completely uncontroversial statement that every single article that ever analyzed the system's success states as a fact.

2. The audience that owned the system had more casuals and non gamers.

Also a completely uncontroversial statement. In fact, it's a "no duh" statement. The larger a systems user base the more casual it usually trends.

3. There's a lot of shovelware on the system.

Also something that was completely unargued about until I said it. Also a "no duh" statement since a system with a more casual audience will have more shovelware.

But people seemed to interpret that as some sort of insult even though the same points also apply to the Wii. Of course if I had said the same thing about the Wii no one would have given a crap, but because it's about their manly, precious ps2 I guess it's a problem.

I expect this bs at gamefaqs. This place is usually less of a craphole.

Some articles that attribute the DVD player to bring a large part of ps2: success.
http://www.twinfinite.net/blog/2013/01/14/rip-ps2/
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20070117/104753.shtml

http://www.cnet.com/news/how-the-venerable-ps2-made-it-to-9-years-old/

There's lots more if you want to bother to Google it. The DVD player being a huge part of the ps2's success is considered to be an undisputed fact.
Sorry that fact upsets you for some reason.

@MC808 you don't seem to remember how expensive DVD players were back then. An entry level dedicated DVD player cost 50-100 more than a ps2 did. DVD playback was a core selling point for the system.

And I know 4 people personally who bought it for that purpose and never bought a single game for it. Including my wife.

wombatkidd commented on Vita Overtakes 3DS in Tough Week for Japanese ...:

Those 3000 ps2 games that the other systems didn't get are mostly the kind of cheap cash in shovelware that the Wii would go on to be plagued with. The ps2's user base was largly composed of non gamers who bought it for a cheap DVD player, so devs pumped out as much crap as possible to draw in that crowd.

Xbox had a good deal of exclusives due to Microsoft giving this parties boat loads of money not to release games on other consoles.

But actual major games that came to more than one console? The GameCube got them and continued to throughout its life span.

wombatkidd commented on Vita Overtakes 3DS in Tough Week for Japanese ...:

@Darknyht I'd like to know where this meme of the GameCube not getting third party support came from. You can count the number of console mutiplats it didn't get on one hand, the same for the other two console.

It even had the best selling version of a few mutiplats, soul calibur 2 being the prime example. And had successful this party exclusives and timed exclusives like resident evil 4 and rogue squadron.

Whatever the GameCube's problem was, it wasn't third party support. Do people just back port Wii's third party support problems to justify the GameCube's poor sales or do people who didn't own the console just assume it has no third party games? I'm curious.

You do know Reggie is a PR guy who doesn't actually make any decisions for the company, right?

@Peach64
If you actually did into their income statement instead of getting your news from click-bait articles you'd see that their gross profit (income calculated only based on actual sales and cost of selling) is a positive number. They actually are making money on the selling of their products.

Their net operating income is a negative member due mostly to advertising costs. They wasted a lot of money on ineffectual advertising last year.

But their non operating income more than makes up for that and the company as a whole had a net profit of roughly 7.5 million US.

You can peruse the document yourself.

The income statement starts on page 25.

@rushiosan because the Wii u doesn't emulate Wii games, it has an actual Wii on a chip. When it's in Wii mode it's a Wii. That's why it has a sperate interface for it.

You can't do software emulsion tricks with that kind of setup, with the trade off being that 100% of Wii games are compatible.

Including several movies named "troll 3"

@Mahe that's actually a good find. I was being hyperbolic though.

In any case there aren't many existing articles from 1991-1994 that criticize the SNES or Genesis at all. And believe me, in the real world at the time criticism of both systems was a flying. Today's console wars have nothing on the sheer vitriol that was Nintendo vs Sega.

wombatkidd commented on Nicalis Boss Tyrone Rodriguez Thinks The Wii U...:

@JohnRedcorn

I'll respond to your idiotic challenge with my own. Link to any existing negative gaming article from 1991-1995. Not only are records from then not available online any more, but gaming magazines were even more in the publishers pockets back then than they are now. One of the reasons JLN and their ilk were able to foist so much crap on the public was the lack of actual honest reviews of games. The fact that crap like Bubsy 3d got anything more than a 1/10 in any game mag is proof of that.

I told you the arguments that actual Sega and Sony fanboys threw at me because I owned a SNES/N64. The only way it's not a 1:1 comparison is that when their competitors copied them the criticism stopped.

Say what you want beyond this point. I won't be taking to you further.

@JohnRedcorn "NO ONE (other than parents who had to pay for it) was jaded or pessimistic about game hardware back in the early to mid-1990's!"

I can tell right there that you either didn't grow up in that time or are not remembering it properly. Kids got into arguments over system specs all the time. Google "blast processing" sometime. People were always jerks about this stuff. They just used to do it in gaming magazines reader submission columns or to your face. I like you citing Nintendo power only having "pro" articles like that meant something. It was owned and published by Nintendo. That's the thing that's truly "quote worthy."

And no, the analog stick wasn't a "requirement" for nearly that many games. An option? Yes. But most of the puzzle games, racing games, and fighters could be played without it and controlled better with the dpad anyway. Or used it for things that could have easily been mapped to other buttons like the taunts you pretended could have only been done with the analog stick in wrestling games. The thing was out for 2 years before third parties started really building games around it.

Oh and there were definitely games that required the stick that would have been more comfortable with the dpad. Quest 64 and smash Bros come to mind.

And lastly, there were gamers who played GoldenEye and said that. I was one of them.

wombatkidd

#45

wombatkidd commented on Nicalis Boss Tyrone Rodriguez Thinks The Wii U...:

@JohnRedcorn bs. If the n64 didn't have the analog stick it would have been designed completely differently. So would the SNES controller without those buttons. There were a bunch of games on the n64 that could be played completely fine without the analog stick.

And you might not be old enough to remember or just missed it because there wasn't the internet back then but people complained that the shoulder buttons added to the cost of controllers and added nothing, and people complained that the analog stick added nothing to games and didn't work right.

It's a direct 1:1 comparison. Get over it.

Do all Wii games use motion controls? Do all n64 games use the analog stock? Do all SNES games use shoulder buttons? I guess those things should have been optional too. /sarcasm
