Metroid Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Today

Posted by James Newton

A quarter-century of hunting bounties

25 years ago today, 6th August, Samus Aran took her very first steps into the gaming world in Metroid on the NES, and she never looked back.

To celebrate we have a great week of content planned, but for now let's recap on some of our past Metroid coverage.

Want to know which game rises above the rest? We have reviewed every game, spin-off or compilation, and proudly present for your consideration (in release order):

Metroid review
Metroid II: Return of Samus review
Super Metroid review
Metroid Fusion review
Metroid Prime review
Metroid: Zero Mission review
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Metroid Prime Pinball review
Metroid Prime: Hunters review
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption review
Metroid Prime Trilogy review
Metroid: Other M review

While we've already reviewed Metroid Prime Trilogy we have individual retro reviews of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes on the way too.

If that doesn't satiate your desire for intergalactic Space Pirate-hunting action, check out some of our Samus-related features:

Metroid's Metal Makeover — Music maestro Jon Wahlgren talks to US band Metroid Metal about their love of the series and the difficulty of turning video game music into heavy metal.

Don't Touch My Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn — Jacob Crites investigates the commercial and fan reaction to Samus's divisive appearance in Metroid: Other M.

Samus Narrates a Trip Down Metroid Memory Lane — Need to catch up on your Metroid history? This video is for you.

It's hard to believe that Metroid all kicked off 25 years ago. Here's to another 25 years of intergalactic hide-kicking from everyone's favourite lady bounty hunter in a Power Suit.

Yay! I'm glad that NintendoLife at least takes the time to give Samus here well-deserved birthday recognition. Nintendo only did that for Mario and Zelda.

25 years of greatness. Happy Birthday, Samus! I hope you have many more great games in the future...

Late said:

I must play some Metroid today. It's a shame that I only have Metroid Prime Trilogy and Super Metroid. But soon I'll have Fusion from Ambassador Program (which I've completed once before)!

And of course, Happy Birthday to Samus, Ridley and all the Metroids!

Tails said:

Heres to another 25 years of hunting down Space Pirates with the one called Samus Aran.

Noire said:

Marry me, Samus! I've only been asking for years... I'd be your baby.

Anyways, happy 25th anniversary, Metroid! How different my life would have been without that first Fusion cart I bought so many years ago. Heck, I might not even have bought myself a Gamecube if Prime hadn't so completely captured my consciousness like it did back in the day. It's been a fun ride, traversing all those dark caves for all those Missile Expansions. Hope to do it for another 25 years~

Kholdstare said:

Happy birthday to Kraid, Ridley, Mother Brain, Baby, The Metroids and Samus Aran!
It's been an awesome and fun 25 tears.

Kifa said:

Happy birthday Samus Aran! We hope for at least 25 more in your company!

And for all those Other M haters - I've played through EVERY Metroid game out there and read through the official manga. And I'm telling you, there is nothing wrong with Samus' personality in latest game. She's just portrayed with more detail that were omitted in previous games (for many reasons). And besides - after MOM she's more of a person and less a Master Chief with boobs. So stop hating.

Happy Birthday Miss Samus! Good to know NL recognise the 25th anniversary, Nintendo should really throw on a party for Samus.

I loved this until i beat the original game and we found out "he" was a she. Now, whenever I play it feels... weird...

Happy 25th Anniversary to Samus Aran and the Metroid franchise!

Here's hoping for a Metroid on Wii U (Battle Mii does not count) or Metroid 3D (not a 3D Classic, but that would kick arse, mine especially).

My Favorite Game Series Of All Time

Though it's hard to pick my favorite entry is Fusion. I wish we got some nice Metroid merch for the 25th anniversary if there was an artbook, CD, or some affordable figures I would be really happy.

iPruch said:

My apologies, Zelda, for what I am about to say... but Metroid is my favorite game series since I played Prime (and then all the rest, each one perfect at its own way).

Happy Birthday, Samus Aran =)

TwilightV said:

I got a copy of Prime Trilogy recently. Still on the first game because i'm trying to 100% it.

Kifa said:

Come to think of it - don't you think that it would be perfect to get the re-release of Metroid 2 on 3DS VC? I'm not talking a remake of any sort, but a vanilia GameBoy version. I still have the original cartridge stashed safely in a metal box, along with three of my GameBoys (Classic, Pocket & Color), but it would be super cool to have this on a backlit screen. Please, Nintendo?

DrCruse said:

Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, and Prime Trilogy are the best in my opinion. I was never a fan of the whole nonlinear thing in 2D, but it works great in 3D.

SuperLink said:

Metroid Fusion is the best, then Super Metroid, then the Primes, then Other M.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Samus! You have a great series and look great in a zero suit.

NintyMan said:

Happy birthday, Samus Aran! I wished that I had played her games a long time ago, but I did play some of Super Metroid last year on the Virtual Console. I could definitely see why that game is considered the best in the Metroid series.

It would've been nice if Nintendo had done something with this anniversary instead of nothing. It might not be the best selling series but it's still seen by fans as one of the top franchises. And it was started by the brilliant Gunpei Yokoi too!

CapedGodot said:

I'll be buying a Metroid game in today's honor. Probably Metroid 2, but maybe a different one, depending on the inventory of the game store. It took me until this past April to discover just how awesome this series is (it's now become my favorite Nintendo series, toppling the previous holder of that title, Donkey Kong), and since then, I've beaten every game except Prime Hunters, Other M, and Prime Pinball. I can't wait to try them, and I'm looking forward to Samus's future.

Tare said:

I remember getting prime way back in 2002 and not having any idea what to do.

I started it up again and while I understand where to go and what tot do most of the time, I forgot that prime is really hard.

Spoony_Tech said:

My second favorite franchise right behind Zelda. Although the last game left a bad taste in my mouth it was still a good game just not great! Hopefully Nintendo has a surprise they haven't been telling us about! A Retro 3ds version for CHRISTmas!

RudysaurusRex said:

I was so suprised when I played SSBB, the first time I ever played as Samus in a game, to use the final smash and voila! She's a girl. O_o

Luffymcduck said:

Metroid never was one of my fav series like Mario, Zelda or Donkey Kong Country. But they´re still good. Metroid Fusion was the first I played and still my favourite.

suburban_sensei said:

Happy Birthday, Samus! I really hope Metroid is one of the NES VC games that we, the 3DS Ambassadors get. Super Metroid is still my favorite in the series, though.

retro_player_22 said:

Happy Anniversary for the Metroid series, c'mon Nintendo give us Metroid II: The Return of Samus and Metroid Fusion so we could celebrate.

pixelman said:

Woo! Happy 25th Samusversary! Super Metroid is easily one of my all time favorite games. :3

stratocastx said:

Happy 25th Anniversary to the Metroid series, quite possibly my favorite game series of all time

Link79 said:

If Nintendo had any respect for this anniversary at all they'd give us Return of Samus on 3DS VC.

Oh and I'd just like to say Other M did not ruin Samus.
I too am a fan since the early days and I still enjoyed it.

moosa said:

I checked out your Metroid Prime Pinball review... Completely underrated! It's low on content but it has to be the most addictive game I've ever played. It's different from any pinball you've ever played before. Ridiculously fun!

Widdowson91 said:

Metroid kicks ass. I prefer both Mario and Zelda personally, but 2 Metroid games are in my top 10 games of all time (Super Metroid and Metroid Prime) while only one Mario is. Metroid Fusion is the best game for the GameBoy Advance while Metroid Prime 3 is one of the best Wii games.

God I love the Metroid franchise :D:D

UltraRobPrime said:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISS ARAN AND RIDELY! I am not going to play my PS3 today, instead I'm going to play Metroid Prime Trilogy and Super Metroid on my Wii. Here is to another 25 years of badassery!

SilverBaretta said:

Such a great series. Happy birthday, Samus, I'll have to pick up a game of yours that I don't own yet in celebration!

Ryno said:

Is it Metroid's birthday or anniversary? We got some Happy Birthday's to Samus here, was she really born on August 6th?

3DS said:

Im celebrating by listening to Harmony of a Hunter LIVE now

Punny said:

Happy 25th, Samus! I hope you set off on a 3DS adventure in the future!

niner said:

Holy crap, Samus's anniversary is my wife's and my anniversary as well! Who knew? Now I'll remember both of them.

ecco6t9 said:

Like Samus,Link, and Simon Belmont, I too am also 25.

Except most days(Knee injuries) I walk slower than Simon.

FluttershyGuy said:

Happy birthday, Samus! I have every Metroid game here except for Hunters. Does anyone know if Nintendo is going to do anything to commemorate the Metroid 25th anniversary at some point in the near future? I've not read of any specific plans and wanted to see if anyone else had. I know it's not Nintendo's primary franchise, but it's been more than significant enough (especially for women in games as heroes and NOT damsels in distress) to celebrate in some way. Metroid II 3DS VC release or something soon! And there were cakes for the Wii & DS sales stats articles. I want to see how Metroid cake tastes!

WolfRamHeart said:

Adam did not authorize this 25th anniversary celebration but screw him.

Happy 25th Anniversary Samus!

armoredghor said:

aah what a great series. revitalized by retro studios and reimagined by team ninja. Echoes is still my all time favorite game.

C-195 said:

Happy Birthday Samus! Knowing her she'd throw a Terminator kind of event,
Space Pirates: Ah crap.
Ridley: Hey it's my birthday too!
Mother Brain: and mine!

TheGreenSpiny said:

Happy Birthday Samus! Thanks for all the memories. You truly are the greatest franchise of them all.

LordAndrew said:

Thinking about downloading Metroid on the Virtual Console to celebrate. But what if it or Zero Mission are Ambassador games?

You know what? I'll do it anyway, at least to show Nintendo that I care about this anniversary.

SKTTR said:

Great, great series. Best female action protagonist ever. Already started strong, and got better with each and every game. Happy Birthday, Samus Aran.

chiptoon said:

I wish Nintendo was doing something special to commemorate this. Metroid is great.

I really hope that the vocal haters don't effect the chances of an Other M follow up. I love that game. I especially though that the gameplay was of incredible and courageous design. It was so retro and so modern at the same time. a really unique experience.

motang said:

What an awesome series, other than Metroid 1, 2 and Fusion I have played them all and enjoyed them very much (yes even Other M).

BattleBorn said:

I think Nintendo is waiting until 2012 to acknowledge Metroid's 25th, because that's the year the series debuted in NA and the majority of the fanbase is in the West.

We'll have Fusion on 3DS by the end of 2011/early 2012, an inevitable 3DS VC release of Metroid II... and maybe — just maybe — a brand new Metroid game? 2D sidescroller plz?
