Imagine if a country announced that the money we all use and strive to earn will no longer be valid currency, exchange them for soda caps. Is this change some kind of social experiment?
Back on point, I’ll see how this change works out. I don’t play ranked anymore and mainly play to unlock Pokémon licenses. If license journeys will be like the last few events for getting pokemon licenses…it might be fine…it’s just going to be a different grind. I think the last 4 - 6 pokemon licenses (can’t recall exactly) were distributed for free this way already (with the dice roll board and the latest mega evos).
If it were me, I would have preferred having more options to use the coins for a limited period. Like use them to buy those pokemon holowear.
The change feels like it will give new players a harder time to get new licenses for free. Which encourages paying for them with aeos gems (that you buy with real money)…which is what they want.
@Lizuka thanks for mentioning that...I'm ashamed to admit, I wasn't paying close attention to all the information on the NSW2 leading up and when it was officially launched...got caught up with life to track it closely...but, from the limited information that I had then, my initial impression was that it was going to be seamless. I think I heard that games would be backward compatible and I didn't dig further...I still eventually found out that I was wrong.
When it was announced that the NSW2 would support NSW1 games, they made it seem like it was a seamless thing, as though all NSW1 games were going to work perfectly on the NSW2 immediately...at least that's how I understood it. But in reality, here we are...waiting for patches and confirmation from Nintendo/Game Devs one game at a time. This is another reason why I haven't and not in a rush to buy a NSW2.
I didn't think that a lot of work had to be done, after the NSW2 release, to make NSW1 games fully compatible. I thought that all of the NSW1 games would be good to go immediately.
Makes a stronger case for those who haven't purchased the NSW2 to wait a bit more.
I think the success of this new magnetic design that attach joycons to the switch will rely on how stable the locking mechanism is. I think the magnet is there to get it into the right position and give us the iconic sound that the NSW makes when you attach a joycon, but not really suppose to keep it place and attached in practical use. We’ll also see how wobbly the implementation is…can’t wait to get hands on the nsw2 to answer there questions.
I hope that compatibility issues only apply to niche titles like the Labo as mentioned here. But I can’t quite think of other games with a similar situation like the Labo…
Consoles are “stuck” because they limit the utility of the hardware for gaming/entertainment. For some, it’s hard to justify purchasing a device with limited purpose if you could buy a PC for the same price. While that PC won’t run the latest games well for that money (if at all), it could still run older titles, emulate much older games, and play other entertainment platforms while having productivity apps.
I wonder what might happen if the PS5s and Xboxes could officially run a PC OS…I think the value proposition could attract more buyers…I certainly would buy it.
I agree with the mic but I don't like the idea of a camera. Another big and common ask is to have joycons and procons with hall effect sticks. A quick access panel for battery replacement across all products and peripherals would be nice, paired with readily available off-the-shelf replacement batteries...replacing batteries should be doable by children. The dock needs a redesign. It should be able to house many cartridges that you can access while using docked mode. It could use a fan so the switch does not run hot. They could add a secondary screen there too...if they do decide to have chat in the firmware, that secondary screen could display that. It should also come with an external GPU of sorts to boost the performance of the NSW...maybe as a "super dock" product. While the list in the article are all hardware oriented, there's a lot that they could do on the firmware side as many have already pointed out. One setting I'd like to add is an option to disable the touchscreen. I've have ghost touch issues with my switch and turning off the touchscreen from settings could solve it. Come to think of it, I can't remember playing a game that needed the touchscreen.
I agree with many here - the statement doesn’t quite say that the cartridges will work on the next gen switch. Saying that the software will work on the next gen switch only covers digital versions of the game.
@Kienda, and I also find that parental controls are straightforward and easy to setup on the NSW…having streaming platforms on the NSW, parents can bundle all the screen time a kid needs in one device and manage one parental control setting.
I think having all streaming apps available on the NSW can potentially have people use the NSW more…keeping them on the device for longer periods. If I were Nintendo, that’s a good thing.
Personally, I find quite easy to setup the NSW to another TV when traveling. To be able to access my streaming subscriptions on the TV via the NSW is a win for me.
1) Ideally, all the great new things for the price range of the OG/OLED NSW would be great.
2) Current NSW games, physical and digital, should work on the next gen NSW.
3) An improved dock. The dock can be maximized in its utility. External GPUs exists now, and applying that concept to the NSW dock might provide a significant and much desired performance boost while playing docked. And also, I wish they would improve the cooling of the NSW while docked…the dock needs to help cool down the NSW, which should also help a bit with performance. Enhanced dock mode cooling will particularly benefit those of us that live near the equator where it’s hotter for majority of a year.
Honorable mentions: A) Joycon and procon drifting should have been fixed ages ago. The 3rd party market is filling in to provide a solution, but I hope Hall effect analog sticks make it to Nintendo hardware.
B) Hope the form factor stays pretty much the same…I hope it doesn’t get bulkier or heavier.
I was able to get one, and I don't think there were a lot of these being sold here to begin with as my country does not have an official Nintendo presence, so I felt lucky to get them. But the satisfaction of being able to get them got dampened ...some amiibos translate well from mockups to actual amiibos...I think these two didn't.
Tried contact cleaners and the cardboard fix, but joycons started drifting again after a while. I’ve fairly recently installed these replacement sticks, but so far so good…and technically should not drift. I don’t primarily use the joycons, but my kid does…and the kid hasn’t complained about drifting since I installed the replacement.
It certainly feels different compared to the original sticks as pointed out. I do prefer the rubbery texture of the pads from the original over the replacement. I’m hoping the pads on the replacement might feel more grippy as it wears out a bit.
I only use the duplication glitch as needed. For the most part of playing the game, I don’t need to duplicate items. My use cases for duplication are for getting parts required with armor upgrades…or if I need rupees. I do this to save time finding all of the items/grind for rupees…then I get to spend more time exploring the map.
We have a lot of people that don't have the drift issue on the joy-cons. And we also have a lot of people experiencing the drift with their joy-cons. sometimes even newly bought ones. I've had 3, 2 of them drifted. We have a high degree of variance on the durability of these joy-con analog sticks based on our collective experience, which to me speaks of an issue with quality control.
I did the "fix" to put a piece of cardboard under the analog sticks, and I've had great success with that. If that workaround stops working, I'll pick up these replacement joy-con analog sticks.
What I want is one for the pro-cons. I have 2 pro-cons. I use one pro-con almost daily, and that one work perfectly since forever. The 2nd one is a 2nd player pro-con, which is used rarely. The 2nd one will have weird analog stick response when you used it again after sitting unused for a while...it takes a good amount of rounds on the analog stick before it starts working smoothly. I think replacing it with hall sticks will solve that problem for my seldom used pro-con.
Great responses from everyone, and great points shared from different perspectives.
One way to look at this is that the NSW is a specialized tablet. Tablets do get updated too, but not as often as mobile phones. Generally, when tablets get updated, it’s usually with an much improved chipset. The NSW did get an update from V1 to V2 where the chipset was improved a bit, then the OLED NSW with a better screen…so when comparing to tablets develop, I think the NSW looks old spec wise.
When I compare it to the PS5, a lot of games there look much better (visually) than what the NSW can throw on screen. Asking for that level of visual fidelity from a handheld device is a tough ask, but if we’re gonna dream, why not dream big?
That being said, I have a V1 NSW, I don’t have any other console, and I think that contributes to why I don’t feel the age of the NSW just yet. The games I play all work well, so there’s little to complain about...except maybe the very bare firmware UI, and the poorer battery life on my NSW, which is expected.
To add, I'm not sure if someone already brought this up, Platinum Games/Nintendo are Japanese companies. So it might be safe to assume that their corporate practices follow Japanese work culture even though they operate around the world. What might seem unfair as a non-Japanese might be normal for Japanese work culture.
I think that she should’ve avoided specifics (like the amount)…I think this would have saved her some legal troubles that’s probably heading her way. I also think that I would not have minded if the tone/vibe of her message was more explanatory rather than slinging negative things against Platinum Games…also, I agree with other people that think asking for a boycott was too much. I suppose she just felt so much pain and insult by the hand she was dealt with and this was the result. Her case isn’t exclusive to her situation…probably a large percentage of working people feel that they are underpaid or under appreciated too…
…and I like the voice DLC idea…let her do it with the help Platinum …she gets 0 flat rate payout and Platinum will fund all costs…and then make it so a big share of DLC earnings go to her.
It’s amazing to see that others are lucky with their pro cons…to not have to deal with the drift is a gift.
I have 2, both exhibit drifting. One started drifting after many hours (years) of use…the other started drifting after significantly less use. I think it’s safe to say that the quality of the components are just all over the place in terms of how long before the analog stick drifts.
As with many of you, I’ve had to clean the analog sticks too…I’ve done so too many times already. If hall sticks really solve the problem, it should hopefully become the industry standard. But for now, I wish this manufacturer can release a mod for the pro con…I’d prefer replacing the analog sticks rather than replacing the whole controller. This manufacturer already has a kit (not hall) to replace joycon analog sticks, so there’s a chance.
I would very much like to get the explanation on how lucent narga manages to do its disappearance act...just for flavor. I'm sure it has something to do with the moon. Can't wait for the in-game cut scene.
@BenAV I can't argue with your logic, but I'm still excited about augmenting armor. It will be interesting how the devs balance the game with this new mechanic...and see how much impact the augments will actually have in gameplay.
From what I can tell from the image, it would seem like (I'm speculating here) that the devs are rolling out the rampage weapon augment mechanic to armor. If that's the case, we might have a short list of "preset" armor augments to choose from, and we'd only be able to pick 1 "preset" armor augment. Devs could give us the option to boost S/A class skill levels, but reduce the defense/resistance stats of the armor to balance things out.
The laziest release notes/patch descriptions...copy pasted from previous patch notes... They could've literally versioned up the FW without doing anything.
Nintendo should've started NSO and NSO+ tiers at the same time, with NSO+ to include all DLCs from current and future Nintendo AAA games...that would have been more attractive.
My family is also looking forward to the Sunbreak DLC. I run a 2 swtich household...I digitally purchased MH RIse in first switch, and I have a cartridge in the second switch. Does anyone know if I need to buy the DLC twice? Or does game sharing work for DLCs?
@buggysdad I certainly find that there is a steep learning curve when starting to play the MH series...which really turns off a lot of players starting to get into the series.
I recommend watching youtube guides on how to use your weapon of choice - I was originally purely a longsword user since MH Generations, but started to use other weapons in MH Rise with the help of youtube guides.
Once you find the "combat rhythm" of the your preferred weapon and get to experience and figure out the tells and moves of monsters, "pick up and play" becomes more apparent.
Another thing that I learned to make things a bit easier is to hunt with other people online...I think that this makes it faster to get the parts you need to make stronger gear. I've only played MH games offline until MH Rise, and the pace of acquiring monster parts while playing online with other players is noticeably faster...because you generally get to finish hunts faster.
I hope this leads to something actually meaningful for Nintendo customers in Malaysia and Philippines. The new website has the same information found in other official Nintendo sites...nothing really new to offer.
I feel like this was too port heavy. It's hard to get too excited about the ports, because there's really nothing new there except that it's now on NSW.
I did like Kirby's adorable mouthful mode, sports...which my family and extended family really enjoyed on the wii, and XenoBlade Chronicles 3.
On the MK8 DLC... I wish it was cheaper or released much earlier while I was still playing MK8. I'll probably buy this if it goes on sale.
My kid started playing Monster Hunter Stories 2...the screenshots show a lot of similarities with that, specially the open world screenshots where we see wild Pokemons. I also can't help but see the BOTW vibe too.
I don't know how I feel about this exactly...it feels odd to see this level of similarity in the open world aesthetics between the screenshots and MHS2/BOTW. I suppose it can't be helped...
The sad truth that I've learned after reading many comments from everyone on this topic, since the pricing was announced, is that those (like me) who don't like the expansion pack are a minority.
I suppose, that for any product, the more selective user base will almost always be a minority. I can only hope that the expansion pack will eventually offer something truly reasonable for the more selective NSW owners.
I remember seeing that ad...it was a sh** up and take my money moment and I shared that ad to all my gamer friends.
5 years in, I agree with how it is now missing more modern "features" ...but that wasn't much of an issue when it was launched. I guess the excitement on the idea that is the NSW won over any technicalities when it was released. Thankfully, Bluetooth audio was made available via firmware update recently...which should've really been done from the get-go.
On the topic of voice chat support...it's really great to talk to people you're playing with...that interaction enriches the overall gaming experience. It is a shame it's not built-in the NSW. Thankfully, working around this limitation is easier now with smartphones. Maybe Nintendo assessed that it would be better to leave that aspect for communication devices? And that building their own infra to support voice chat maybe wasn't deemed profitable...arguably, they could add voice chat to help the NSO Expansion pack. Anyway...I digressed...5 years in, it is showing age, but we still love it, not sold on the NSO Exp Pack. Can't wait for what comes next.
Additional 5USD for the annual family membership....additional 3USD for annual solo membership. Or cheaper.
My logic is that, this is a subscription...there's recurring cost to have them. Prices need to be reasonable for us to pay for it multiple times ...and it has to be reasonable enough to replace free emulation.
Another angle we can consider is that this as a museum, with the effort of preserving these games, with Nintendo as the curator. And for the benefit of mankind, access to this museum should be widely available and cheap.
After reading a bit, there are many lucky joycon owners without issues and I'm happy you're joycons are perfectly working.
I think there needs to be a way to be more objective with this drifting issue or any other defect issue with the joycons. "Abuse" use is too vague, "took care" of the joycons is too vague.
There needs to be an officially released data on the number of gaming hours the analog sticks on the joycons will work optimally before wear and tear starts to affect performance. This can then be the baseline to determine if everyone's joycons are really defective or not.
Let's say, hypothetically, we have the official data that the sticks are rated for 500hrs and/or 10k clicks whichever comes first...then we have a better way to determine defects. Any drifting under 500hrs with less the 10k clicks is a defect...joycons above 500hrs or more than 10k clicks of use are fair game.
@Pod I've 3 pairs...2 of which came with gen1 NSWs bnew, and the 3rd pair was a replacement. My 2 original pairs had significant drift issue on both left joycons, with slight drift in one of the right joycons. The 3rd newer pair is still running good. As pointed out, just using my own experience, that's a good number.
To add, I have 2 procons bought at the same time I got the NSWs so wear and tear is already immediately distributed...My kid use the joycons. Even with workload distribution (and I play more hrs on the NSW), still got the drift on the joycons.

Back on point, I’ll see how this change works out. I don’t play ranked anymore and mainly play to unlock Pokémon licenses. Rares and sub species are good...but bringing in monsters from the previous MH games would still be better.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 14.1.2 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
The laziest release notes/patch descriptions...copy pasted from previous patch notes... They could've literally versioned up the FW without doing anything.
Re: Here Are More Monster Hunter Rise Weapon Showcases To Get You Ready For Sunbreak
@aznable I have friends with the same experience as you do...I can't convince them to play the game.
I play the game and I enjoy it a lot. What helped me was learning how the monsters move.
Re: Poll: Will You Play Splatoon 2's DLC Now That It's Included In Switch Online's Expansion Pack?
Nintendo should've started NSO and NSO+ tiers at the same time, with NSO+ to include all DLCs from current and future Nintendo AAA games...that would have been more attractive.
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Version 3.9.1 Is Now Live, Here's What's New And Different
My family is also looking forward to the Sunbreak DLC. I run a 2 swtich household...I digitally purchased MH RIse in first switch, and I have a cartridge in the second switch. Does anyone know if I need to buy the DLC twice? Or does game sharing work for DLCs?
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Version 3.9.1 Is Now Live, Here's What's New And Different
Re: Nintendo Continues Expansion In Southeast Asia With Official Websites For Malaysia And The Philippines
I hope this leads to something actually meaningful for Nintendo customers in Malaysia and Philippines. The new website has the same information found in other official Nintendo sites...nothing really new to offer.
Re: Round Up: Everything Announced In The February 2022 Nintendo Direct - Every Game Reveal And Trailer
Re: Gallery: Nintendo Shares More Screenshots Of Pokémon Legends: Arceus For Switch
Re: Capcom Is Already Preparing For Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary
I've been enjoying the MH franchise for a long time now. A minute to learn, a lifetime to master.
Re: Review: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC - A Slice Of Designer Heaven
This made me play the game more again.
Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever
Re: Talking Point: Five Years On From The Frenzy Of 'NX' Becoming The Switch
Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes
I might change my mind if they slapped on access to all DLCs…
Re: Poll: What's A Fair Price For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?
Additional 5USD for the annual family membership....additional 3USD for annual solo membership. Or cheaper.
My logic is that, this is a subscription...there's recurring cost to have them. Prices need to be reasonable for us to pay for it multiple times ...and it has to be reasonable enough to replace free emulation.
Another angle we can consider is that this as a museum, with the effort of preserving these games, with Nintendo as the curator. And for the benefit of mankind, access to this museum should be widely available and cheap.
Re: Consumer Advocacy Group Calls Out Nintendo For Joy-Con Drift Ahead Of Switch OLED Launch
Re: Consumer Advocacy Group Calls Out Nintendo For Joy-Con Drift Ahead Of Switch OLED Launch
@Zag_Man I like what you said on making parts modular! I'm game with that.
I like the idea of buying an easily swappable component that's going to fail eventually due to normal wear and tear. Like batteries.
Re: Consumer Advocacy Group Calls Out Nintendo For Joy-Con Drift Ahead Of Switch OLED Launch
You're very lucky with your joycons.
