With the launch of the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak expansion at the end of June, fans of the franchise have hopefully had enough time to really get to grips with the new content and slay a few pesky monsters. With this in mind, Capcom has now shared some footage of what's to come, with the rather ferocious 'Lucent Nargacuga' monster making its debut in the upcoming free title update, along with a host of other monsters.
In addition to the new monster, of course, we get out first look at a brand new area coming to the game called 'Forlorn Arena', which will also be included in the title update. Initial impressions is that the new area - and indeed Lucent Nargacuga itself - looks pretty gorgeous, and we can't wait to explore it properly.
The free title update will be available to all owners of Sunbreak in August, though a specific date is not known at this time. This will be followed be three further updates: one in Fall, one in Winter, and a final one in 2023.
Are you looking forward to taking on the new monsters in Sunbreak's title update? How have you found the game so far? If you're after a bit of guidance on whether to try it out, make sure you check out our review; it's a tough expansion, to be sure, but definitely one to check out if you're a fan of the main game.

That entire fight was gorgeous, and the animations for Nargacuga was insane. The way he disappears like a cloud of mist and then you see his eyes - just wow. This should be a very fun hunt.
Currently holding off on Sunbreak, as the amount of content for the asking price is not reasonable, IMO.
The addition of G Rank is nice and all, but with a paltry 5 new monsters and only 6 returning (not counting the variants), it feels less than substantial, which is what I figured would happen.
I do wish I was better at this game as it looks fun. But it doesn’t feel fun learning it so for now I shall leave it alone.
(Remembers pouring hours into Monster Hunter Tri, which had like 15 large monsters)
Kids these days.
So excited for this! I just got to the "end game" portion and still blown away by the content on offer here. So many quests and side quests to clean up, I'm very satisfied with this release so far.
@Octorok385
i know right, there is a lot i dont like about sunbreak but it is absolutely stacked, people need to realise quality is better than quantity. also stacked about 700 hrs myself on tri
I don't think there's much to explore in that arena stage. It's probably just a second arena-type of level in the game as its name implies.
@Browny
Sunbreak really feels as large as the original game. To me it was and still feels like a must buy if you like the series.
Sunbreak has 17 new monsters and the old ones have new moves, but we have to remember they'll be adding more on top of it.
Of course there's also new silkbind moves changing how you use your weapon, quests, follower quests and areas... to me it has been a satisfying DLC and I've played it tens and tens of hours.
Edit: name one other game outside of mmorpgs where the DLC is as big as the base game
@Cia Correct, this is an arena map introduced in Gen 2 and revised in Generations. I still have PTSD from my first Silver Rath hunt in Freedom Unite there...
@Browny at least research what Sunbreak actually has before dismissing it with inaccurate info
Sunbreak was alot of fun, I got probably another 100 hours into it. Looking forward to the title updates
Got to MR60 & holding off til this August update as I feel like I’ve done most of everything in Sunbreak. Currently rolling through Generations Ultimate & it’s great seeing where this franchise has come from!
MR83, almost at 100! I’ve been trying to make new builds based off the new jewels and armor they’ve added in the DLC. I have plenty to occupy myself.
@Browny Umm there's way more monsters then that. Where did you get that number from?
Already put in around 80 hours and i'm not even MR100 yet, easily as big maybe bigger the base game and fixes so many of the base games flaws. Also the Insect Glaive always my weapon is now objectively one of the best weapons due to the buffs and things added to it, the new Kinsects are insane as well.
I know part of this is intentional to emphasize how much of a threat Lucent Narga is meant to be, but it's really funny how the hunters in this preview look 100% out of their depth fighting it. Lance player turtling in place several yards away while the CB player can hardly get any hits in as they wirefall directly into successive attacks.
Sunbreak has been amazing. Like others have said, the quality of the content is fully worth the price, and I've put in another 50-100 hours already!
I would very much like to get the explanation on how lucent narga manages to do its disappearance act...just for flavor. I'm sure it has something to do with the moon. Can't wait for the in-game cut scene.
@WallyWest @Arawn93
19 new additions. 5 new monsters, 6 returning, and 8 variants.
Were there other monsters not listed on the wiki?
@Browny Misread your comment, didn't realise you were counting the subspecies Monsters. Its worth noting Subspecies are practically different monsters, they look different, have different move sets and all have their own armour and weapons. I mean you don't look at a Snow Leopard and dismiss it as another Leopard right? Subspecies are their own thing. Also worth noting all the base game monsters have been giving new moves, a change in behaviour and are all way more aggressive.
@Broosh
Well, at least I can use Harvest Moon with my LS more effectively in that arena stage.
@Browny
Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The endgame provides an afflicted variation of all the monsters in the game. These feel like new battles once again. The afflicted monsters have got huge health pools and increased attack power. They can also inflict bloodblight and have red insects on them you need to hit for additional damage.
If you're MH veteran, these battles will give you true challenge. Even the easiest monsters can wreck you in this afflicted state. Getting optimal endgame gear becomes even more important than before.
@WallyWest
I used to look at variants as wholly different monsters, but the more MH I've played, the less thrilled I've become at the prospect of fighting palette swaps with tweaked movesets and higher damage output. I don't feel this provides the right kind of challenge, and further increases the burnout.
At the end of the day for me, a Rathian, Pink Rathian, Silver Rathian, Dreadqueen Rathian... they're all Rathians, and they just move a bit quicker and hit a lot harder.
@Cia
Afflicted sounds like another word for Frenzied from 4 or whatever the equivalent was in World. Cool gimmick at first blush, yet another example of palette swapping monsters when you get down to it. The monster has an even higher chance of OHKO-ing; I don't view that as a plus or a challenge, just an annoyance. It changes the experience from a fun hunt with friends or randos to a salt-fest when you or someone else carts over a minor slip up.
It might sound as though I'm being overly negative or critical of the expansion, and I am. But after over a thousand hours across several entries in the franchise, the only thing keeping it fresh (for myself) is the variety of monsters. Two unique monsters will always outclass two or more variants on the same monster.
@Browny are you joking? There is SO MUCH content in just the base expansion, let alone the coming title updates. They could have priced it like a full game and it would have been worth it.
The base game+ sunbreak has more than enough monsters. Besides, most people will be grinding just a few of them in the endgame anyway. If I need afflicted fangs I keep on killing the easiest fang carrying monster to get them.
