Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Demo Now Available At Switch 2 Kiosks (US)

This weekend I played it at my local Target and I have to say that when the first trooper started talking to me I was like OOF. Gameplay is silky smooth and visuals are awesome, but mannnnnnnn it felt more like it was trying to go toe to toe with Halo or COD or something with the chatter. I’m hoping to be proven wrong and they release a version called Metroid Prime 4: It’s Beyond Quiet on This Planet.

Re: Nintendo Of America President Doug Bowser Announces Retirement

@N00BiSH Fair enough, when compared with Reggie. But he did make sure the Switch continued to sell well in NA, kept things going during Covid, and helped get the Mario Movie out the door, all while prepping for enough stock in NA for the Switch 2. Yeah maybe not glamorous, but solid leadership I’d argue!

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Donkey Kong Bananza

@Uncle_Franklin Yeah that’s a good point. When I first played Mario 64 in 1996, I didn’t even think twice about the camera because there simply had never been a camera to control before in any games I played haha! But now I know a bad camera when I feel it, and the DK Bananza one is great considering the difficult work conditions I have giving it haha.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Donkey Kong Bananza

onlyonemello

@Uncle_Franklin On reading that in the article, I felt the same as you. But now after playing the game for a few days, I get it — how on earth are you supposed to have a fixed camera when the environment and its camera “boundaries” are being literally destroyed by the player every second? In this case, I can forgive them. The camera you get used to, and it’s not a huge deal for me now!

My kids love Free Roam. I think the open world is for them and not for me, a dad Nintendo enthusiast. The Rewind feature is huge for them when exploring around the beautiful world. It doesn’t hold my interest (Knockout Tour is where it’s at for me), but it’s just their speed (no pun intended haha).

Re: Editorial: Gamers, Support The People And Sites You Love, Before It's Too Late

I’m concerned about the potential push to biased sources that only want positive news coming out about their products and policies — honestly, Nintendo’s “Nintendo Today” app sort of fits that mould. I get it — the internet can be toxic, so controlling the narrative can be important. But it’s also going to result in impartial points of view that will ultimately harm consumers.

I’m tired of watching people in their car try to convince me that this chicken sandwich they’re eating is great. I want some professionalism when being sold something — thanks to sites like NL and others for still holding onto that. Sorry to see some of the old guard at Giant Bomb led to pasture!

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Overworld Sure Looks Familiar, But Is It?

onlyonemello

@ZombAid82 Yeah we’ve already experienced that with Zelda too — fans thought they wanted a realistic Zelda, but got Wind Waker instead. Then I guess Nintendo listened and went darker and more realistic with Twilight Princess. Arguably, time has been kinder to WW and Nintendo realized we don’t need photorealistic Zelda. I don’t need HD browns and grays and tans and forest greens.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Overworld Sure Looks Familiar, But Is It?

onlyonemello

@Not_Soos Ok fair enough. Sometimes I just can’t deal with the complaints of people who want more, more, more, when clearly Nintendo is giving us nearly everything (besides ALBW haha) on the Switch. The implication in the OP’s comment is that Nintendo doesn’t listen to “the people” when I just don’t think that’s true. For example: Super Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door, Metroid Prime Remaster, Pokémon Let’s Go games, Advance Wars Reboot Camp, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Link’s Awakening, Pikmin 1+2, AND 3, Skyward Sword, LiveALive, Kirby Return to Dreamland, Xenoblade Chronicles, DKCR, Luigi’s Mansion 2, etc etc etc. The original comment just made me annoyed — Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, and especially when they’ve been cooking up excellent HD ports and remasters during the Switch’s tenure.

Re: Feature: "It's Fun, So It's Okay!" - Celebrating Takashi Tezuka's Astonishing 40-Year Nintendo Career

I really enjoyed that! It has probably always been true of Nintendo, but it’s great to see the many creatives “behind the scenes” that are such integral parts of these wonderful games. Miyamoto, Aonuma, and even Iwata have cast huge shadows, so it’s easy to think the creativity is a small group. Obviously, given Nintendo’s consistent quality, that can’t be true — it’s clearly a company chock-full of creatives — but it’s nice to be reminded of those other vital employees who have given us such amazing experiences!

Re: Soapbox: FOMO Nearly Ruined Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom For Me

onlyonemello

I probably need to give this game some time, but in previous Zelda games it was curated places that were not the same. All was unique. I get it that this game is more about the journey than the reward, but the pre-BOTW games had both. I like BOTW and TOTK, but neither of them makes me want to spend hours and hours in the world just so I can get some zonai rocks. The economy of the game all works together, but it’s just not very… fun to me. I hate to say this. I hope I change my mind. I probably just need to play the story and side quests and ignore all the (arguably) bland in-between.

I teach high school English and we used this as a “text” in class this year. Played through the game in class together on the Switch. Kids really loved it, and that was the most outloud reading in class I’ve ever heard from a bunch of 9th graders. One student was inspired by the game and continues to show me her artbook each week with her new drawings and comics of the characters. Amazed at this game’s impact!

Re: Poll: How Hyped Are You For Nintendo's E3 Direct?

onlyonemello

I’m concerned that we won’t see any Breath of the Wild 2 because it cannibalizes sales and confuses consumers about Skyward Sword. If they don’t show anything from Breath of the Wild 2 I think the Internet will riot, but I’m wondering if Skyward Sword is intended to be a stopgap on purpose as BOTW 2 won’t be out for a good year or so. I would not be surprised if this Direct is Skyward Sword heavy. 😩

Re: Memory Pak: Looking Into The Light In Super Mario 64

onlyonemello

Love the article. Confused by the headline photo of Mario 64 though. That doesn’t look like the original game — Mario’s character model looks much more defined! This doesn’t have any bearing on the article itself, but curious if I’m the only one seeing it look much better than the original?

Re: Anniversary: EarthBound Turns 25 In The USA, And A Whole Generation Feels Old

onlyonemello

@Losermagnet Haha again, pretty much the same experience! I TRIED to buy the rental copy of Earthbound when the store went out of business, but no luck. I often wonder where that specific copy ended up haha.

For a long time Earthbound was my white whale — unobtainable and mythic. Glad the official digital copy exists now on the WiiU, but still would like a physical copy!

Re: Anniversary: EarthBound Turns 25 In The USA, And A Whole Generation Feels Old

My avatar has been waiting for this moment.

I rented this game in 1995 from a video store because it had a huge box. This game was so much different than what I was playing at the time (Donkey Kong Country and Mega Man X, probably) that I was completely weirded out by it, but wanted to see more and more.

I often site Final Fantasy VII as my first RPG, but this was actually it. Just realizing that!

Finally beat it on Wii U in late summer 2015 and had a bittersweet moment seeing Mr. Iwata’s name in the credits, given how much he did to save this game back in the day and how, sadly, he had recently passed away.

Re: Nintendo Announces Indie World Showcase For Tomorrow

onlyonemello

It makes sense to do an Indies World Showcase a few days before the release of a major first-party franchise (Animal Crossing). If a full Nintendo Direct was tomorrow, wouldn’t that potentially cannibalize sales from Animal Crossing? People saving their cash when “something better” shows up on the Direct? This makes sense to me. Independent games are (often) not $60. Would not be surprised with a full Direct the next few weeks after Animal Crossing releases.

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 8.0.0 Is Now Live

onlyonemello

@AlohaPizzaJack I get what you’re saying, but I know one of Nintendo’s goals with the Switch is to get people in and out of those games fast. My 3DS CHURNED with all of those added themes, music, and folders when trying to turn on or suspend. Very happy with the minimalism of the Switch.
