As promised just a couple of days ago, new information has been released concerning the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield for Nintendo Switch.
You can see the announcements for yourself in the video above. Among them are new Galarian forms of fan-favourite monsters, a new, form-changing Pokémon, new rivals, and an introduction to the game's rival team, Team Yell.
Let's take a closer look.
Galarian Forms
You can get a closer look at the Galarian forms (which appear to be just like Pokémon Sun and Moon's Alolan forms) below. Weezing, Zigzagoon and Linoone were all shown off, as well as a brand new evolution for the family called Obstagoon. As it happens, Obstagoon can only evolve from a Galarian Linoone.
Morpeko - the Form-Changing Pokémon
The form-changing Pokémon is called Morpeko. Amazingly, it has a Full Belly Mode and a Hangry Mode. Wow.
New Rivals - Bede and Marnie
Bede and Marnie have appeared as new rivals. Both were only shown for the briefest of moments, so we're sure there's plenty still to learn about each of them.
Team Yell
It would appear that the new rival team on the block is Team Yell. Described as being Marnie's wild fans, Team Yell appears to use the new Galarian Pokémon in battle. We're really digging the goth-punk vibes going on here, even if they do sound like a total nightmare.
Watched it already? Let us know what you think in the comments below! Pokémon Sword and Shield launch on 15th November.

SO happy they are continuing the Regionals... and for a non-Gen 1 Pokémon too... and a new evolution to make said Pokémon somewhat relevant competitively... and it’s based on KISS! Galarian Weezing is also my favorite new Pokémon design so far. Can’t wait to see Sirfetched (Farfetched with a monocle + cane).
Love those Galarian variants, especially Weezing. Not a fan of Obstagoon though, looks pretty awkward.
I won't say no to more regional variants! Galarian Weezing is my favorite new design; it looks both dapper and poisonous.
Also, "Hangry" form....XD
I wonder if they also have a British Koffing with a mustache and a top hat.
Team Yell ?
Or more like Hooligans ?
I never thought Weezing and Zigzagoon would be part of my team. Now they will be.
That is the coolest weezing in the town. Look at that spiffy top hat!
I am a bit underwhelmed by the forms but love the idea. Regional forms are a great idea for a fresh take on an older Pokemon, and I'm a fan of a normally low-tier Pokemon getting a new form to bring it into the mix. Was hoping for news on which Pokemon won't make it in.
New enemy team looks equal parts silly and cool.
Top hats into chimneys is really inventive. It's a joy to see our culture used as inspiration for Pokémon!
Here a link to an additional video. It’s in Japanese but has a lot of extra footage.

What's the point if the game still looks like a pile of garbage?
They turned the Zigzagoon family into Kiss badgers and I love it.
Oh wow, they know generations other than 1 exists
@koaeinferno I watched the English & Japanese trailer and not once did I think “this looks like garbage” Nice thing is, since you don’t like it, you get to save $60.
Third stage evolution for zigzagoon is neat.
Also, do you think Obstagoon will have a non-Galar look for original Linoone?
@koaeinferno To be fair, lots of people say Fire Emblem Three Houses looks awful, but they agree it's still a great game. Graphics aren't everything.
@MajinSoul You just wish you were that metal
Morpeko is really cool: I like the idea of a type-changing Pokemon!
Dapper Weezing is hilarious, of course.
Team Yell sounded dumb in the leak, and it still sounds dumb now.
I really like the Galarian forms for Zigzagoon and Weezing. The Weezing one is very creative. And Obstagoon looks sick
I also thought Morpeko was cute. The "Hangry Form" had me bursting out laughing. Only cause they used the actual term hangry
And is it just me or maybe its just better video quality than previous trailers, but the game looks extra crisp at this point.
Gentleman Weezing is so gonna be a meme
Where are the starting pokemon evolutions!?
I love this. I'm getting Sword for sure.
@dwbrab01 Around level 16 usually
@MajinSoul Kinda reminds me of incinaroar honestly. Like a heel wrestler, more precisely a pair of old wrestlers. Let me see if I can find their names.
They made Weezing into a sophisticated bong! That caught me by surprised.
This is just awesome!
I like gentleman Weezing.
@Supadav03
I heard Scottish Bagpipe sounds at the end of trailer ! 😆
Galar region = UK including Scotland
The zigzagoon forms are exactly the ratata forms but adding an evolution is interesting
The new mon is the biggest pikachu design clone so far, the team looks underwhelming
But weezing looks awesome
Yes! Regional forms was the best thing to come out of Gen 7! I'm so excited!
@whanvee I'm pretty sure the whole line is now a KISS reference, rather than wrestling.
Still seems like more of the same we've always had in Pokemon games. The only innovations we've had so far are big Pokemon and a half baked open world. Don't think GameFreak should be praised for this but oh well.
@NorseGamerTommy
Wait until we see more British or Scottish influence on Pokemons.
My wild imagination was thinking about new Pokemons inspired by Spice Girls, Elton John, Lady Diana, Mr Bean, etc. 😆
I'm wondering if GameFreak showed off their most meme-worthy Pokemon to counteract the negative press surrounding the game. Counteract #dexit with #gentlemanweezing or #sohangry. Makes me wonder what audience they're truly trying to appeal to.
@link3710 Considering the team that uses them most I'd be inclined to agree. But I still get a road warrior vibe from the final evolution. Look them up and you'll see what I mean. Though those wrestlers could have also easily been inspired by kiss as well.
@Ralizah
Team Yell lads need some exercise.
Look at their belly. 🤨
Team Skull lads have better body shape than Team Yell lads.
Hangry mode lol imma get snicker for it
I like Team Yell's premise, but that name is just so stupid...
Oh lawd. That Weezing is amazing. Looks like a first gen team member is making a return from retirement for me. Plus the added fairy typing is great!
I didn't like obstagoon until I realized it was just a Kiss reference, now I think it is great. Won't make my team though.
Hangry mode... HA!
Don't make me hangry. You wouldn't like me when I'm hangry.
Show me the whole Pokedex then I might commit
@Supadav03 I like the way the Japanese video is presented. I'm also intrigued by that menu with all the emblems on it. Wonder what that does?
@GrailUK
"I'm hangry."
Morpikachu is cute.
yeah I'm just giving up on them fixing the box art
@N00BiSH I'll agree that they are both pretty crappy.
im in love with the new rivals essentially being punk. after the gangster vibe team skull had im glad theyre embracing the ridiculousness of it all
@whanvee Either Road Warriors or the tag team Demolition or WCW's Kiss Demon.
Will also the non Regional variants be in the game or only the galar forms?
@justin233 Aren’t they based on badgers rather than Kiss since we have badgers native to the UK?
@thiz Not that I am boycotting it, but that isn’t the problem for virtually anyone. The point is that in all past games, it was actually possible to obtain every Pokémon through various methods, such as trading and migration from previous entries. In Sword & Shield, it isn’t.
@whanvee apparently it’s for Pokejobs:
Serebii Update: PokéJobs are jobs at the Rotomi PC in the Pokémon Center where you can send Pokémon to achieve tasks and gain experience
@nessisonett I think it’s a bit of both. Hawlucha debuted in a region based on France, but the country isn’t exactly known for its luchadors.
Cool, liepard is also in the game. Spotted him in the Japanse trailer i didn’t know that yet...
@nessisonett They are based on badgers, but look at it closely. Black and white coloring, star over the eyes, and always having their tongues out? It's definitely a combination of a badger with KISS.
@nessisonett They can be both badgers and inspired by Kiss.
New pokemon are EXCELLENT! Awesome to see regional variants coming back, AND new evolutions! Gen 4 remakes confirmed
Hop was just a copy paste of Hao, complete with the same exact animations. It's awesome to see other rivals coming in and I really hope they take the spotlight instead of that knockoff.
Now we just need Snowy Owl Noctowl and a Galarian Granbull (Fighting Fairy?)...
@N00BiSH
>Fixing the boxart.
>This has been par for the course for most mainline Pokemon games since the beginning of the franchise.
Can't watch this since i'm at work, but was this all there was to the video from today if so i'm a bit disappointed. I've been waiting on them to at least show us 2nd form of the starters .
@Markiemania95 Not all the games my friend. I think the third gen made it pretty hard to transfer anyone over. I know what you mean but until we know exactly how many are missing, maybe we shouldn't be too bent out of shape.
@Anti-Matter pubk metal hooligan sports fans? (They are noted to be the "wild fans" of one of your rivals).
Either ways I see strong "galar forme team skull" potential in them and I have to admit i'm kinda hyped for it, damnit
@SpookyPotato Game development is a lot more complex than what most people think it is. There's a good technical reason why they've decided to remove the National Dex
@Supadav03 Thank you very much for that link! Much appreciated
I've been on the Pokémon train since the original Red/Blue and welp, I'm really looking forward to this game and today's trailer is getting me more and more excited. There. Felt like getting this out what with all that vocal "I won't buy this so I watch news about it and complain in every comment section instead of keeping that to open discussion threads" rambling everywhere.
I don't care what the box art looks like since I buy a game so I can play it, not to have a nice decoration in my already chock-full game cabinet, that's what merchandise is for. I like what we've seen of this game's graphics so far, it looks interesting to me (I do get that it isn't for everyone and that's fine), I can't wait to see those characters in action, and I'm seriously looking forward to its soundtrack. Also bagpipes. And metal/punk scene stuff and hooligans. But most of all bagpipes.
@Supadav03 thank you. That sounds really weird,lol. I guess you can do more than just leave them at the daycare to grow on their own this time around.
@boxyguy not only punk.
Punk metal hooligan sports fan of your rival
I don't think we could have asked for a better "galar form team skull" than this.
@whanvee whilst it was impossible to transfer from Gen 1/2 to Gen 3, every single pokemon to date was coded into the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald carts - those that weren't found in Hoenn became catchable with the release of Fire Red/Leaf Green and could be traded to any Gen 3 cart, because they were in the games' code already.
@MegaVel91 @whanvee It's not just bad, it's downright embarrassing that they even consider this to be perfect final box art. It was understandable for the previous entries because handheld boxes don't have a lot of space and they still looked appealing to the eyes. SWSH is very not on a smaller box and the art on the box is real bland.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought fro sure the Zigzagoon line was gonna be part steel, not dark! A little bummed there but nbd. I nee evolution is AWESOME though! I wonder if they'll give any more Pokemon a new Evo!
Whatever you do, be sure not to feed Morpeko after midnight! Lol
Obstagoon, though. Really? Another tryhard standing Furry? Especially from a Zigzagoon/Linoone? Who keeps designing these?
@PawlSLax Okay, I'll give you that but riddle me this. How were you to transfer said pokemon upon release? Fire Red and Leaf Green weren't out at the release of ruby or sapphire. Maybe we should wait it out a bit. Dont forget we are in an age where anything can get patched into a game post release. They might release a pokedex complete version next year just to sucker everyone into buying this game again. There really is no way to know.
I've always loved pokemon but I must admit I haven't played through the last four games in the series. Mostly because I lose interest quite quickly. I blame the fact that I'm becoming an old fart,lol. I must say as a giant pokemon fan I was disappointed that not all the pokemon are here. Also as I giant fan(cause I'm fat,lol) I know I will find pokemon I like to be in my team. Plus I might actually play through this version if it's as fun as it looks.
@N00BiSH Its always just been a pokemon on the box. This time I just feel they are both crappy and ridiculously similar looking. So it's not very appealing to me.
@KarateLuigi the evolution jingle seems to be kinda rocked out or was that just me?
Still doesn't persuade me but I got a smile on my face from most of this at least. It's nice being able to see Sword/Shield information and not having to shake my head in disappointment for once! Maybe there's hope yet. Maybe.
@whanvee I never said that all games could transfer from previous games. I stated that all past games allowed you to collect all Pokémon through methods including trade and migration, which the former falls into in Gen III’s case.
@thiz Not sure if the sarcasm is directed at me or those you were referring to in your initial post, but I don’t think it looks like a bad game at all. I plan on getting Sword at release, and I only responded to you to highlight what those complaining are actually complaining about. I do agree that it’s a bit of a shame they’re not all there, but I still reckon I’m going to enjoy it when it comes out.
@Markiemania95 upon release of ruby or sapphire how could you migrate pokemon? Fire Red and Leaf Green weren't out until a year or two later. So how exactly could I have everyone in that game at launch? Just curious?
I think we just have to wait for our leaf green and fire red. Or maybe an update that will allow this game to access data from the let's go games.
@whanvee Indeed, you couldn’t obtain all Pokémon at the launch of R/S/E, and you’re also exactly right about the possibility that future games could allow us access to those missing Pokémon, in the same way FireRed/LeafGreen and Colosseum/XD did. However, given that they’ve already announced that many Pokémon will not be compatible with transfer to Sword & Shield (all Pokémon could be transferred to D/P/P and X/Y, even before HG/SS and OR/AS released respectively), and Game Freak’s track record of post-release DLC (non-existent, to my knowledge), I believe there is a logical cause for concern for those that do worry. Either way, I’ll be enjoying the game. I always try to use new Pokémon/forms for my teams, and I never transferred my older Pokémon past Gen 6 anyway, so this isn’t really a concern for me personally.
Aloan variant: look at our lovely exotic forms.
Gallar variant: I'LL CUT YOU!
Doug Dimmadome? owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome where they're showing Crash Nebula On Ice?
@Aeleron0X Sorry you misunderstood. I know exactly why they removed so much. I couldn't give a monkeys behind about that. I just wanna know what all the new ones are like so I can plan out my team beforehand.
Didn’t want this game until Galarian Weezing. It’s the little things, you know
i notice theres still some people complaining about no national pokedex seriously you cant please anyone these days.
@Ralizah Type-changing Pokémon? You mean like Rotom, Meloetta, Darmanitan, several Mega Evolutions, etc.? The idea isn't new at all.
I love the region specific forms. Weezing looks awesome. Alolan Forms was actually what got me to buy a 3DS and play X while I waited for Sun and Moon to come out.
Director: Alright guys we need some new Galarian forms. What do you have Stevens?
Stevens: Weezing, but with a tophat and monocle.
Director: A bit on the nose don't you think?
Johnson: What about if his top hat is a smokestack?
Director: Perfect Johnson, well done!
Stevens: Ok, Weezing with a top hat smokestack and a monocle.
Director: Lose the monocle. Dapper Weezing isn't pretentious like you Stevens.
So excited isn't exactly the right word, there have been regional exclusive forms before, there are rivals in every game, and an evil team in every game...but an evil team based around rioting UK football fans is pretty funny...
Gentlemen Weezing made my day.
@Xelha,
Depends on your own personal opinion,a lot of Pokemon fans will be getting very excited for this game.
Neat, but it doesn't make up for all the things that got taken out of the game. If every Pokémon were in the game though, I'd be much more excited about these then I am. And I hope to God that isn't the MAIN evil team, because they make Team Skull look like world-class megalomaniacs...
@johnvboy I've been a life-long Pokémon fan, but the more I think about this game, the angrier it makes me, and I can't believe Gamefreak is releasing the game like this. I have quite a few friends who feel the same way about this. A lot more then friends who are actually excited for the games, that's for sure.
@whanvee That's what I'm saying.
While I'm not going to be getting the games, you'll be sure as heck I'm hyped for the TCG!!
Ain’t no question if I want it, I need it
@EmmatheBest,
While this is true for yourself and friends it is still a long way from saying everybody is up in arms about the situation,and I am sorry, but the internet posting forum posters can't always us the line that others will simply buy anything Game Freak produce,there will be lots of people excited for these new games,I am truly sorry for you that you don't like them.
I was expecting more "Why add the variants when you cant even release all of the pokemon" comments
Very cool new forms. Morphiko sounds like an interesting concept too.
S&S have really won me over. First Pkmn games I'm truly excited for since the GBA days. Downvote how much you'd like.
@KingBowser86 Have you ever heard of KISS or Gene Simmons? Honest question.
I like regional versions of Pokemon but these looked terrible. I'm ok with the new pokemon and it's other form even if it's just the Pikachu copy. The rivals looked far more interesting than any of the characters shown thus far. Team yell is by far the stupidest "bad team" yet. Everything else still looks bland and ugly.
So Linoone is a KISS fan.
Weezing somehow manages to shove its round, chunky self, in a narrow chimney.
We've got a guinea pig pokemon.
And no starter evos.
And a team that looks even more embarrassing then Team Skull.
My interest just keeps dropping. I've never been so continuously underwhelmed with every reveal for a game series I liked.
OMG GUYS, I THINK WE FOUND ALL THE BRAND NEW MODELS BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP!
@MegaVel91 So do it with some other Pokémon. The Lucario/Zoroark/Incineroar/Zeraora trope is played out.
Sheep will be herded.
This game is so British.
Nice new formes, and it's especially nice that they've given new formes to at least one Pokémon that wasn't part of the first generation.
Soo.... we're just going ignore the fact that we might be getting a pokemon that attacks by throwing pikachus since the Leak been 100% accurate so far?
What the [expletive] point anymore?
2019 Pokemon Company sucks.
@Zorox88
Coincidentally, one of the gym challenges will involve using Yamper to herd Wooloo, if that one super-accurate 4Chan leak is to be believed...
Everybody knows Zigzagoon loves MASHED POTATO
What would've been really handy is if you talked about possible influences for the Galar forms and the British culture they take inspiration from. Otherwise this is just the video content typed out.
@Markiemania95 It wasn't though. There is a hard stop at generation 3. It was impossible to transfer gen 1 and 2 Pokemon into Ruby and Sapphire before they made Fire Red and Leaf Green. This isn't the first time they locked out old Pokemon with the intention of adding them back into the games over time. This is just the first time anyone that got into the series gen 4 or later are hearing about this. If you started by then you already had the resources available to get everyone back, but when 3 came out we had no option but to wait.
I really like most of what I saw. But I am real bummed that the new "villain team" is another Team Skull wet noodle.
I hope there is a team of real bad guys. I miss Rocket. I miss actual bad guys - not world ending megalomaniacs nor random group of derpy thugs - just old school bad guys. Rocket was a gang of thieves out to make money they were basically a mafia. That was cool. They can be cartoony and childish, but I want bad guys with believable motives. Greedy thieves or criminals.
@Heavyarms55
Like Team Plasma from Generation V ?
It's finally come to me. Morpeko reminds of the creepy little man-eating bears from Yurikuma Arashi.
And Galarian Weezing is a beauty.
I hope we see many more Galarian forms as Gen VII was a huge letdown in that regard (with only about a dozen forms, all based on Gen I Pokémon). And I certainly didn't expect Zigzagoon to get new forms, plus an evolution to boot!
And it would be very appropriate for Farfetch'd's beta evolution Madame to finally show its face and become canon.
@Anti-Matter I wasn't a fan of Black and White like so many others are. I liked B2W2's Team Plasma much more. Ghetsis was much more of a traditional villain. He wanted to rule, not destroy and was manipulative and selfish, but relatively intelligent. Many people like N more and I can kinda see why, but the frame he came in, and the annoying way Plasma was in those games, with their glaring hypocrisy, it spoiled it.
Also on a side note. I always felt like all of Gen 5 was greyish and dark, not in terms of story, but visually. I think HGSS looked much nicer.
I consistently consider gen 5 the weakest generation. Or second weakest, after 7.
@Aeleron0X what is the national dex? I've been kinda living under a rock when it comes to pokémon
No one cares! Bring Back National Dex!
@dDankGM basically, after you beat the main game and capture every Pokemon available in the region, you unlock the national dex which allows you to get every single pokemon from the previous generations. Sword and Shield removed the national dex meaning that every 800+ Pokemon won't be available and as you'd expect, fans aren't happy. But the reality is a lot more complex than that. I recommend you read this post by a game developer who explains what goes on when making a Pokemon model.
https://t.co/b0hZxpNyFy?amp=1
What about all the "redone" (GEN1?) Pokémon in Pokémon Lets Go. Are those all going to be available in Pokémon Sword / Shield?
Wouldn't make sense not to.
@Heavyarms55 Pretty sure Team Plasma's glaring hypocrisy was to emphasize the fact later that N had been manipulated and duped.
@scottienigma Not sure if you read all my comments or which one you’re replying to specifically, but I’m going to assume it’s the first one, in which case you must not have read it properly. As someone who has been playing Pokémon games since Generation I, I am well aware that there was a transfer block between Gens II and III. In all previous Generations, there has been methods of obtaining all Pokémon SUCH AS trade and migration. That doesn’t mean both were available methods in all past titles, it means that at least one of those two was. And again, as I said in my last post, all Pokémon were programmed into R/S/E. With what we know so far of Sword & Shield, and given their lack of add-on content for previous games in the series, I personally doubt that Pokémon missing at launch will be patched back in post-release.
@Markiemania95 The point I am getting at is that at the release of generation 3 there was no way of obtaining Pokemon from past generations. It wasn't until the release of Fire red and Leaf green at a later time that gen 1 and 2 Pokemon were available again. All previous Pokemon were added after the fact. Game Freak will be adding the old Pokemon back over time. Most likely through new entries like they have in the past. You are correct, they will almost 100% not be adding them back as DLC. Instead they will trickle them back in as new games come out for the Switch. It's how they did it in the past, so we can only assume it's how they will be doing it this time.
@scottienigma So your point is entirely irrelevant to the one I was making then - of course they will be adding Pokémon back in later entries. They’ve even already officially announced that they will be. That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Sword & Shield will lack both forward and backward compatibility for many Pokémon, which is something that has NOT happened before.
@Aeleron0X what are these technical reasons because they've been largely debunked from what I've read.
@Aeleron0X Hmm... I don't know why people are fussing and demanding such a feature like that, no doubt will do a number on the employees welfare, they'd never get the game out in time - and I'm sure they said sword and shield was not their priority. 800+ models? + rigging, textures, balancing, bug fixes? I can't even make a passable 3d model in blender! Anyways I do agree with what the thread says - gamers & fans tend to underestimate the process behind making games.
@RiasGremory I know, right!
@Gzeus88 Either you haven't read the post that I linked or you just don't know anything about how game development actually works
@Aeleron0X oh apologies I forgot that random folk on Tumblr are experienced game developers.
@Gzeus88 Judging by your sarcastic tone, I'm going to assume that you didn't properly read his post and the other posts he has written in the past. Also he's not just a random person, he's a game developer who has 15+ years of experience who has a lot to say about what goes on in the industry. And while yes he keeps his identity anonymous, most of what he says has already been said by other people. People tend to underestimate the scope of what goes on when making a game. It's a lot harder than what you think
@Aeleron0X sorry but I wont trust an anonymous game developer any more than I trust the youtubers that think they know everything.
Where is my comment? Is this forum now so draconian that we aren't allowed to post a dissenting opinion...
Why even have a comment section if the whole idea is just a charade?
@Gzeus88 ok gamer
