@The_Nintendo_Expat That's what it is. Thanks for putting it in words. I've never played it, but I've looked at it multiple times and it always seemed uncanny.
The pickup truck at 0:15 straight up says Hyundai. One of the DLCs was Godzilla the movie? There's an above average amount of product placement in this video game.
But it is fascinating to see how Nintendo understands they make great music, and they understand people like to hear it, but they cannot for the life of them figure out how to sell it. I remember Mario Kart 8 had a jukebox update and the commercial showed a woman plugging in her headphones and listening on the train. Nintendo music as an online service is also weird. Now this. It's weird, but I think they're getting warmer. Sort of.
Besides some poor writing, this game is a masterpiece. But mods are invaluable to fix the little things that drive me nuts otherwise. Speech options at the top of the list.
@McGregor Bethesda's texture files are bloated. Vivid Fallout is a must have mod for performance, and looks sharper than vanilla, too. The Insignificant Object Remover also helps a lot.
Bugs Bunny turns to the camera, takes a half-chewed carrot out of his mouth, and says, "Boy, the modern world sure has a lot of problems, don't it? In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Citizens United, dramatically changing the criteria for campaign finance laws and allowing corporations ... " He assumes you are American, because he is as well.
Definitely not for me. The 'I hate corporations' aspect is an immediate turn-off. It's just uninspired. Same with the cost of healthcare joke and quirky reddit Cthulu appearance. Are you going to build a world, or aren't you? When we talk about immersion, it isn't about realism. It's about not feeling like the writer is in the room with you, showing you his notebook of cool ideas and epic references. Maybe it's not so egregious, but since that's what the review shows I have to assume it is.
@axelhander Perhaps. Perhaps not. They are already a huge burden on energy prices in northern Virginia where most of them are being built. These are population dense areas already, and they aren't equipped to handle the projected strain. https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/east-coast-blackouts-ai-data-centers-b2899669.html "PJM, the organization that services nearly 70 million people in a 13-state corridor stretching from Kentucky to New Jersey, may be forced to trigger power outages during high demand periods, such as summer heat waves or winter freezes, The Wall Street Journal reported." "PJM has projected that power demand will increase by an average of 4.8 percent annually for the next 10 years — an unprecedented pace of growth. And ICF, a consulting firm, forecasts that demand in 2030 will surge 25 percent above 2023 levels, largely as a result of data centers."
I think using AI is a symptom of creative bankruptcy, but the real problem is that its primary use is really mass surveillance. The normalization of technology for quirky fun art composites is essentially PR for an industry propped up entirely by military spending. Those data centers aren't for asking google how to get to the store.
@Pirate1
I agree with you in spirit, but Lego has always experimented with electronic pieces in different ways. I remember the train sets, a UFO kit with a fiber optic light, a mechanized dinosaur with a touch sensor connected to a voice box.
@obijuankanoobie I've played them all, and I think he's right. The mechanics are a tiny bit different in each game, but 3 is finely crafted and stays true to the original spirit of Pikmin. Pikmin 4 is good in many ways, but it takes out some of the difficulty and feels a lot less... challenging.
I really appreciate the amount of finishing they've done on this game after release. I played the previous version and it seemed like most complaints had already been addressed, although there were some areas where adjustments were still needed. Overall, it was a very strong first attempt in the genre, and I'm hoping to see a sequel with the lessons they learn.
Blast from the past. I forgot all about the envelope art, but as soon as I saw the first picture it came rushing back. That's awesome. A real lost art.
Good review. It's pretty much how I feel about the game, playing it now. They made some tweaks to address common complaints like checkpoints. I'm having fun, so what more can you ask?
I've got my copy on Switch 1. I'm into it. The game is fun. It's not free from criticism, but it looks like a lot of original complaints like lack of checkpoints have been fixed. It runs perfectly on handheld. Docked, there is infrequently minor stuttering at some loading points, but not at all game breaking. I wish I could take advantage of the S2 resolution upgrade.
