Re: Talking Point: The Mystery of Devil's Third and Its Drift Away from the Spotlight

kensredemption

After reading this article I've come to draw up two possible reasons why Devil's Third has been low-key here in America.

1) As a religiously-correct nation, many would be unsettled to see the word "devil" in marketed products - unless they're eating it, I guess (ie. Deviled Eggs), so Devil's Third may go through a branding change for the U.S., at least. Odd, since there's some games with obscenities in their titles.

2. Splatoon has only just recently been released, and given American gamers' tendencies to jump ship from one franchise to another (I swear, it's like gamers here have had mass-induced ADHD) Nintendo of America may postpone the release of Devil's Third to around the same time Black Ops III or Star Wars Battlefront comes out to give the game a fighting chance in the U.S..

I'm aware that Nintendo's trying really hard to win over European gamers and announcing DTs release in the region may or may not pay off for them. Considering how whiny and cynical most European gamers are (No offense/offence/off-fence/of-ends), their attitude toward the game may be unpredictable...unless, of course, DTs narrative involves the mass-destruction of the American nation and we pretty much get the gist of how much the world disapproves of America.

Re: Working On F-Zero Wouldn't Have Been My Idea Of Fun, Says Former Criterion Boss

kensredemption

On one side of this argument, game developers should be revered as artists and should have freedom to do what they want to make a living. On the other, game developers are supposed to cater to fans wants and needs to survive as a company.

So what are video games, in this respect? Forms of art for aesthetic pleasure? Or are they little more than gold sinks for consumers to throw their money into?

Criterion may not have wanted to work on a pre-existing IP, but would it be so bad if they were given complete creative control that Nintendo also assured Platinum Games and Vallhalla Studios? New IP or not, you're not going to be herded into developing the same type of game that Infinity Ward, Treyarch and DICE have gotten themselves into. Hell, you could run wild as long as the game was fun in the end. That's all that matters to Nintendo, it seems.

Re: Tablets Stole The Wii U's Thunder, Laments Shigeru Miyamoto

kensredemption

"Although he didn't say much about the Wii U's successor, the Nintendo NX, Miyamoto did state that he had high hopes for the platform - but maintained that affordability and innovative remain Nintendo's primary goals."

That's pretty much all I expected out of Nintendo in my entire gaming career. The branding never mattered to me. People who judge the system based on that alone are vapid and shallow. The PS4 and XBO are great, powerful pieces of hardware, sure, but the games have always been underwhelming. Playing games on those now still feel like playing them on the PS2 and Xbox, save for social and streaming features.

The Wii U may be lacking, as is indicated from laziness of turd-party developers who refuse to master the infrastructure of the system and perpetuate this stream of lack of quality games, but the games have always defined the company best. Nintendo has always had the best games, and with the release of Splatoon adds one more genre that they've effectively perfected.

Whether or not the Wii U is a failure in the end doesn't matter to me. After 20 years of experiencing a vast array of all gaming has to offer, I've developed a keen eye for quality gaming products. I don't usually back something technological without seeing the potential in the hardware. It's why I favor the Wii U's hardware for what it has the potential to do for games more than VR and AR headsets (Admit it, Microsoft. Hololens is augmented-reality), and I will back it until the end of this generation.

Re: Video: Star Fox Zero - What We Know So Far

kensredemption

Ha! I can't believe all the whining about SF0. I've waited for a new StarFox game for almost a decade and now that I have one to look forward to I can't imagine playing much else. Sure, I lament the lack of more planets, but alternate missions don't sound so bad, and as long as I get the same shoot-em-up action I got from StarFox 64 with the same campy dialogue and allies crying for me to save their tails: I can be happy with it. Playing the SF64 remake on the 3DS was satisfying, but the real kick that brought me back to the game more often than not was beating my high score over and over again. Platinum has done phenomenally with Bayonetta 2 into baiting me to do so, so I don't doubt I'll be playing StarFox Zero as much as I can. Oh, and to complain about the logo is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Re: Editorial: Cheer Up, There Are Some Exciting Games on the Way

kensredemption

Wow...so much pessimism in this comments section. I'm not going to act like this year's E3 was a resounding success for us fans. It wasn't. Nintendo looks like they've perverted their own franchises to go mainstream, but like another user said in this section: E3 isn't only for us, it's to convert as many consumers over to the Wii U and 3DS as possible.

For many, the Wii U gamepad was nothing more than an accessory or useless gimmick. Now with the confirmed release of Super Mario Maker, consumers who're interested in the title and want to buy it will now know for a fact that they can't just stick with the Wii any longer. They will be FORCED to buy the Wii U if they WANT Super Mario Maker.

Now, as far as the fans are concerned I can't, nor will I speak for anyone when I say Nintendo always comes up with a way to make their fans happy one way or another. Have a little faith. I always have, and still do.

Re: Nintendo Is A Slave To Its Past Success, Says Gearbox President Randy Pitchford

kensredemption

I don't think Gearbox is in any position to criticize Nintendo when they can't program themselves out of that FPS grave they dug for themselves. The lack of marketing is all that's really killing the Wii U. That, and the blatant ignorance about what it is and what it's capable of. New IPs are always welcome, but making a new property and making it a new type of game are two different things entirely.

I've never seen Nintendo directly involved with an exclusive shooter until Splatoon...well, unless you count StarFox Assault which I don't (Though I maintain its one of the best multiplayer games EVER). That was a huge risk, but it paid off handsomely for them. At this point, I guess Nintendo can just build on the formulas that other developers have been using to make their games a success and make new IPs with whatever they come up with.

Imagine what a GTA-style game handled by Nintendo would look like...

Re: Interview: Lilian "Milktea" Chen Talks Smash Bros., Sexism and a Brighter Future

kensredemption

All this crying about Milktea calling herself a victim is laughably whiny. Not once in the article did she advocate special treatment or drastic changes to "upset the balance" between genders. Matter of fact, she advocates for individuals to challenge preconceived notions of gamers of any gender. Treating any individual any differently or with animosity just because of their gender, is sexist. Milktea's not asking for preferential treatment, just for decency. She's much more down-to-Earth than Anita Sarkeesian and would be a better advocate/spokeswoman for women than her. Anita, on the other hand, has been playing victim ever since the 4Chan lepers decided she was worth the trouble. I can't believe people are still whining about her when any real gamer, male and female alike, would know just how ignorant she is within the first five minutes of her videos.

Re: Devil's Third Will Be Much More Than Just Another Shooter, According To Creator Tomonobu Itagaki

kensredemption

Itagaki tickles my lust for gaming masochism more than From Software. The fact that I actually beat Bloodborne makes me wonder if the Souls games are becoming too easy.

I'm hoping Devil's Third is more brutal that the first Ninja Gaiden remake. It'd make this diplomacy element of the game more instrumental in progression, I think. May give you more assets to use against enemies and such.

Re: UCraft is a Wii U Exclusive Once Again

kensredemption

Holy crap, people are still giving him flak? With the way things are in the gaming community, you'd think Nintendo fans would want the Wii U to get every edge it can. Turd-party developers jumped ship, so really that only leaves indie developers. If there's one thing I can say about fanboys, it's that they insist on burning every bridge in sight until they're trapped on the island they saturated with their own refuse.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X and Dragon Quest Help Wii U to Top Spot in Japan

kensredemption

I was hoping to get in a quick quip about this before Quorthon crashed the party. Alas.

This is good for Nintendo. Gaining more top spots in Japan makes me feel somewhat reassured about the future of the Wii U. I assume there's a certain demographic that indulges exclusively in what is trending in Japan...some derogatory term, if I remember correctly.

Oh, isn't the Attack on Titan game coming out this month?

Re: Treyarch Isn't Working on Call of Duty: Black Ops III For Wii U, Though Activision is Noncommittal

kensredemption

@HollywoodHogan Because I abhor the fact that I'm being coerced into paying for an allegedly premium service to play a game online when it used to be complimentary, and this release pattern by third party developers, to me, is indicative of their blatant pandering to the mainstream demographic that cares more about visuals than game quality.

Besides, despite the fact that I own all three current-gen consoles, I don't often indulge in third-party developments because they don't push the envelope the same way they usually do on Nintendo systems. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is one such game. Poorly written as it was, it was as close to classic Call of Duty/Medal of Honor as FPS games will ever get again, and it's definitive edition that made the most of its gameplay was on the Wii U.

That's not to say the PS4 and XBO don't get great games. Frankly I love Bloodborne, Knack, Project Spark and Dead Rising 3, but games of that enjoyment level and quality for me come too few and too far between. Why would I bother paying to play a handful of games I actually like online when there are so much more I enjoy on the Wii U?

I could also make the assumption that Treyarch's just become lazy like so many other developers and the quality of their games doesn't meet Nintendo's standards, but that's a bit of a stretch.

Anyway, you assume an awful lot about me by creeping around on my profile which I haven't edited in months. You know what they say about what you assume...

Re: Call of Duty: Black Ops III "Ember" Tease Sets a Futuristic Scene Ahead of Full Reveal

kensredemption

I think it would really help Activision to give Wii U owners a digital option for buying CoD games. It'd cut down production costs, at least, and the consumer wouldn't have to pay sales taxes - at least not in the U.S. Frankly, I think Activision was having a hard time figuring out how to put DLC on the eShop - particularly the season pass feature, which I don't think Nintendo even practiced until MK8. Either way, hopefully Nintendo's working with Acti to make things easier should BOIII come to Wii U.

Re: Turn It Up To Eleven, Guitar Hero Is Making A Glorious Comeback On Wii U

kensredemption

@Quorthon Well, Treyarch's familiarity with the Wii U this gen and last gen - bringing the Black Ops franchise as well as the MW installments and Ghosts to Wii U - I'm fairly confident that making BOIII for the platform would be second nature to them. Besides, why would Activision bother to let Nintendo Network players link their accounts to the site if they weren't going to bother bringing future installments to Wii U?

Anyway, GH Live's gameplay seems like an homage to the GuitarFreaks franchise from Konami that served as Harmonix's (GH's original developers) inspiration to make Guitar Hero in the first place. As long as I get my music fix without the gameplay being horrendously broken, I'll invest into the franchise.

Re: Rumour: Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 Teased For Nintendo Release

kensredemption

This just may be a sign. If they didn't intend to bring BOIII to the Wii U, why would they bother letting us link our Nintedo Network IDs to the site when the last CoD title to hit the Wii U was Ghosts? I'm actually pretty hyped about this. I know there's no confirmation yet, but I played Black Ops on the Wii and Black Ops II on the Wii U and couldn't put them down. Activision probably won't waste their time with this, but an HD remaster of the first Black Ops for the Wii U would be very welcome. Could just be a pet project, if anything at all.

Re: Analyst Thinks Nintendo Is Already Winding Down Wii U Ahead Of Nintendo NX Launch

kensredemption

Clickbait. -Yawn-

These analysts are such arrogant a**hats. Nintendo's profits may normally come from software sales, but at least they'll still sell months, even years after their launches. Destiny, Watch Dogs and Advanced Warfare all had strong launches, but three months down the line and they're virtually unheard of.

Third-party productions are dependent on hype and the developers and publishers sink more money into advertising than actual development. Once consumers realize this, hopefully they'll turn to more quality products - consoles and software both from Nintendo - and leave third party developers to either rot or change their ways.

The fact that Bobby Kotick (Activision's CEO some time ago) had the gonads to bully Sony into making a cheaper PS3 and threaten to withhold their games from it unless it was affordable made me skeptical of third party developers. Now that I see that they're taking advantage of console hype and reaping more of the profits from sales on consoles, it's all the more reason for me not to give a damn about third party support on the Wii U. I'd still appreciate it, don't get me wrong, but I won't act like the Wii U really needs it if it means fewer console sales.

The Wii U's not dead. History has shown us that repeated withdrawal of support for consoles for new iterations biennially never pans out well. Just wait until E3. This Nintendoom nonsense will be dispersed as quickly as it was last year.

Re: Talking Point: It's Too Early to Write Off the Wii U Over The Legend of Zelda's Delay

kensredemption

If you have the Wii U to only play Zelda games then you're just as narrow-minded as the rest of the Pony-Xbot zealots. There's plenty to play on Wii U already and there's still plenty to come - from first-party to third-party to indie developments. Just take a look around the eShop on Wii U. It's flooded. Even the Koei Tecmo stuff is worth a look. The Virtual Console service, while not as expansive as Japan's, has breathed new life into old games, and I for one am glad to be able to play Duck Hunt again for the first time after 20 years.

Re: Head Teachers in the UK Issue Warning to Parents on 18-Rated Games Being Played by Children

kensredemption

I can only speak for myself when I say this, but to legally reprimand parents for allowing their children to play 18+ games isn't as black and white as they assume. I mean sure, if the parents deliberately allow their kids to dabble in adult content then the neglect charge can be applied, but kids are clever and sneaky these days. I've seen kids convince their parents to buy them Mafia II when it came out saying that they could filter the adult content, or some crap like that.

Best you can hope for, really, is that you do your best to inform parents about the extent of the content. Perhaps show them a clip on YouTube or a highlight reel from the developer about exactly how explicit the content might be, and then let them make that decision to buy it or not. At least that way, the only persons at fault are the parents should they decide to get the game anyway.

Re: The Legend of Zelda for Wii U No Longer Set for 2015 Release

kensredemption

I'm actually grateful that Nintendo's doing this. They MASSACRED my wallet last year with MARIO KART 8, SUPER SMASH BROS. U (I got the GameCube controller bundle for it) AND BAYONETTA 2. I forked out A LOT of money to support the Wii U last year. I even got Watch_Dogs at launch for the Wii U.

This year I'm getting Xenoblade Chronicles X, Devil's Third and StarFox U. If Splatoon is as good as advertised, I'll get it, and hopefully Bandai Namco has more information on both Pokken Tournament AND Project Treasure by E3. Mario Party 10 will have to wait until winter when the family gets together - OH! Harmonix is also aware of the #RockBand4WiiU campaign on Twitter for which I've been actively participating, and now they're going to be collecting information on just how many people want RB4 on Wii U through a survey they're running. The link's on Twitter, so I'll have to do a little hunting, but I'll post it here.

Re: Sony Hardware Takes Charge of Japanese Charts With Flurry of Releases

kensredemption

@Quorthon Dark Souls II was loudly bemoaned by most of the hardcore Souls playerbase for being too accessible, and most of those fans would rather be playing Bloodborne. As far as Mortal Kombat goes, it will pale in comparison to Xenoblade Chronicles X when it releases in Japan next month. And Tropico? Doubt it'll affect those who indulge in the console market exclusively.

Re: Swedish Newspaper Questions The European Release Of Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson

kensredemption

Ugh...why do women - no, sorry - "feminists" think that women are the only gender that are objectified? The double standard is appalling. If they want women to stop being portrayed as sex objects, then they need to get rid of the perception that males are bloodthirsty, overly-ambitious, obscenely fit, machismo and vapid simpletons.

If you ask me, no one has the right to play the victim, and just because genders are portrayed certain ways in the media doesn't mean they're the same way in real life. If anything, the entertainment industry is responsible for screwing up people's expectations and perceptions of reality because they take it too seriously.

It's just entertainment. Just be entertained for God's sake.

Re: New Nintendo 3DS Undone by Dragon Quest Heroes and PS4 in Japanese Charts

kensredemption

One week on being number three on the charts and people act like Nintendo is doomed. Doesn't get much more ignorant than that.

Fact of the matter is that no matter where PS4s are sold, Sony is only making an average of ~$20 per unit. Nintendo has made an average of ~$70 per Wii U sold, and that was after the price drop. Each side has to snatch whatever little victory they can get. This instance is no different.

As far as third party support is concerned, I'm starting to care less and less about it since the investors in each developer's stock is calling the shots now. They don't care about quality or balanced competitive gameplay. It's all about whatever pre-pubescent dolts buy into. I'm a gamer, not a marketing niche for suits to cash in on.

All I want this year is Xenoblade X and Devil's Third. That's it.

Re: Reaction: Pokémon Shuffle Isn't Quite Microtransaction Hell, But It's Getting There

kensredemption

@Quorthon You really need to keep your yapper shut. You're barely a fanboy in disguise.

Anyway, I've tried out Pokemon Shuffle and it's not that bad, really. I've said in an earlier comment on the subject that paying to play more is something you choose to do. From the moment I loaded the game and played it, I decided it was a game I was only going to play once a day and I'm only going to spend jewels on coins. Easy as that.

Re: Satoru Iwata Highlights Growth of Wii U Sales in the West

kensredemption

@Quorthon "The system drove away core gamers, it further damaged the company's reputation with third parties, it was a short-lived fad that burned quick and burned out early, and if it was truly a success, then the Wii U would be performing better. It's good to hear that sales are up, but we're not hearing what we need to hear: A true, modern, account-based platform for their machines, a return to third party support, modern console elements such as strong profiles, strong online (because their free online certainly isn't a strong or competitive online offering), and an achievement system."

Why am I not surprise to hear this coming from you? Nintendo doesn't need to become a generic, wannabe PC port-box like the PS4 and XBO has become. The achievement system has lost its novelty and is about as useful as a turd in hand - fun to fling around, but not all that healthy for you.

The only part of your post that makes sense to me is a more unified account system to tie our purchases to should we exchange systems or if our systems crash. That, and the return to third-party support, given that the investors who have the third-party devs by the balls will actually care about quality products instead of turning a profit.

As far as your argument against free online play goes, if you've actually played online with the Xbox One and PS4 you would know that there is literally no difference in online play compared to last-gen. People still lag switch and people still make poor hosts. To pay for being able to play against people in the same network without the use of legitimately dedicated servers is a scam.

The only time I will ever pay to play online is when I can connect to players on other platforms. Take Final Fantasy XI and XIV for example. You pay the monthly fee of ~$12 monthly and you can play with people across PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms. I'm not going to pay for unreliable online services that still get DDOS'd by a bunch of kids who have yet to hit puberty.

@Zach777 "The Christian 'label' is also very loosely applied to many religions today wether they truly follow the Bible and teachings of God or not; such as Catholics, Jehova's Witnesses, Latter Day Saint Mormons. Those such followers have twisted views of the Bible."

Oh goody, another religious zealot who thinks they know the exact word of God. Religion is one of the few things on this planet that can give people either salvation or hope, and while I don't agree with how most of the overzealous fanatics interpreted mere phrases from the Bible, those who get the general message of living like functional human beings should be able to continue to do so. What they interpret and how they interpret the scripture shouldn't matter. It's that way of thinking that leads to "religious" conflicts or fanatics like the Westboro Baptists. Take your rhetoric elsewhere.

Re: Weirdness: This Video Uses Super Mario Bros. 2 to Illustrate the Consequences of Capitalism

kensredemption

Bah. Why bother debating the topic when everything in society will eventually become obsolete? I get that we live in the present and have to try to preserve and restore what we have to a mirror sheen, but everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, that was ever created by the hands of man has been reclaimed by nature - whether or not we destroy it with our own hands. Debating capitalism is futile. It will fade, just like everything else.

Besides, YouTube is the last place you want to go to try to find enlightenment. Just about everything there serves to entertain. You want enlightenment and education? Go to TED.com.

Re: Dead Or Alive Producer Feels That A Cultural Divide Exists Between Japan And The West

kensredemption

lol This comments section got derailed in less than ten comments. That's gotta be some kind of record.

Anyway, beauty is perceived differently regardless of whoever you ask. A man might find a woman with a petite figure beautiful, another might find a voluptuous woman beautiful. A woman might find the allure in a romantic man, though he may be scrawny or unfit, while another may be looking for an Adonis. Some may even be attracted to the same sex in the same way. That's not really discerning cultural boundaries. It's only obvious because it's what companies in the West decide they want to sell.

If it were up to me, I'd bring in almost every game in from everywhere on the planet. At least that way, I'd have the Yakuza 1 & 2 Collection for my Wii U as well as Fatal Frame V...Oh! AND Dragon Quest X. Alas, all publishers allow from Japan lately is crap that appeals to wannabe Japanophiles and vapid gamers who find the allure in the most mundane and superficial.

Sakaguchi-heika is God of the JRPG. I don't think I would have ever been such a huge enthusiast of the genre were it not for him, and from my experiences playing games from the Final Fantasy series as well as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and The Last Story: He's always pushing the envelope when it comes to narrative and gameplay. New titles, new mechanics, and so seldom does he rely on the cliched narrative tropes - TLS being the most recent to come to mind in that regard. I worship him and all his work. This award was long overdue.

Now Nobuo Uematsu should get some prestigious awards as well if he hasn't already. lol

I don't really know what to make of this. I've seen PewDiePie before and, no offense to any Europeans, but he's just so damn obnoxious and Euro-trashy. After I heard about how immensely popular he is and the whole disabling comment fiasco he just sounds like a whiny child to me.

Anyway, as far as revenue is concerned, I'm not sure who it's hurting when YouTubers make all of these Let's Play videos. A good number of people use LPs to determine whether or not they want to buy a game - superficial as that sounds - and if they decide it doesn't appeal to them, then the developer would lose out as LPs spread through YouTube faster than a high school rumor.

A lot of people on YouTube tend to be sheeple as well, blindly sycophanting to whoever they're subscribed to because they like them, so if they say something bad about a game, word will spread as well.

Bah...

I took the liberty, or rather errand, of browsing through other sites that covered this very topic and I found that many, and I mean MANY, trolls and fanboils were so butthurt about Metacritic crowning Nintendo the best publisher that their arguments became more redundant than ever, becoming progressively incoherent. All I had to say was this:

You don't get that award by re-releasing titles from the year before. 😋
