When one gets right down to it, there aren't a lot of notable Wild West-themed games currently, on any platform; it's a rather puzzling omission. In an industry that's absolutely obsessed at the moment with open world adventure games, one must wonder why more developers don't follow in the footsteps of titles such as Red Dead Redemption. The setting of a lawless, sand-covered world certainly doesn't lack potential and with effective world building, a diverse cast of likeable supporting characters and a unique gameplay hook, a potential hit is just waiting to be born. Nexis Games sees the value in this underutilised genre and is in the process of making its own effort at exploring the frontier.
Nexis Games has announced that it will be bringing A Cowboy's Tale to the Wii U in 2016. The possible misspelling of the title's name throughout the trailer and the reveal article already has us a little concerned, especially given the quality of the studio's only release to date, but nonetheless Nexis Games cannot be faulted for its ambitious goals. This will be a Western open world adventure game, with players assuming the role of a man on a quest for revenge after his family has been murdered. It appears that the game will be played from a first person perspective, though bear in mind that this video is captured from pre-alpha footage - it's being highlighted, also, as a project using the recently released Unity 5.
Indeed, this'll be a rather fascinating title to follow as it develops. In the meantime, you can look forward to UCraft, Nexis Games' clone of Minecraft, which will be releasing sometime this year.
What do you think of this? Are you interested at all in an indie western game? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

'Open-world' but I bet it'll be tiny
"The Letter" ...Arizona edition.
This looks i don't even know,all i'm going to say this game definitely needs some work.
I would pay full price for "Red Dead Redemption" on Wii U. Are you taking the hint, Rock*?
It could have been purposeful, so you should have consulted the developer before editing their work. The title is unusual, but not wrong, so you could be distorting the intent. This could be a (singular) tale about multiple (plural) cowboys, in which case "Cowboys" acts as an adjective describing the "Tale", instead of being the possessive noun you say it is.
I know you guys are mostly volunteers and most of you without formal journalism training, but come on. Don't go making assumptions about other people's work. Especially when you then use that assumption to insinuate they've done a shoddy job. That's just low class.
lol People are acting like Nexis Games is comprised of a team of developers when it's just one guy who's legally blind.
People in this thread on about how it shouldn't have been revealed at such an early stage, as if the final version is going to look much more polished than this lol.
Game looks like "Let's take everything terrible about modern AAA games and do it on a budget of $40."
This looks truly gritty......
@kensredemption there's no denying that this is a poor trailer, and people are commenting on that. Other factors are irrelevant.
Everyone always criticises a game from the first trailer when it's just early footage. I for one am excited to see the first Unity5 game confirmed for Wii U. The only problem is that the premise isn't very original
Hello Everyone, thanks for the comments and suggestions! Rest assured the game is in Prototype stage and was only intended to showcase projects to come down the line! Please know that A Cowboy's Tale at its current stage in no way represents what the final product will be.
Thanks for your comments
@Statusphere Wow i guess you are the developer ? Hopefully it turns out good
Is this self published or are you looking for partners ?
@Faruko realistically speaking my portfolio is much too weak ATM to seek publishing outside of digital platforms but once I get a few quality titles under my belt this will no longer be the case.
Thanks for your comments!
I feel like it's quite unprofessional to misspell the title of your own game. That fact alone is enough to make me wonder the quality of the game.
Why show it if it in no way represents what the final product will be...?
Some sort of press release would've sufficed in that case.
@JubilifeRival in the future I will try a little harder to catch minor grammatical errors before sharing my work with the world but in my defense typos are kinda my calling card
Thanks for your comments
@CB85 Short answer is because I wanted to. I felt the community would like to see what life after UCraft and The Dance of the Damned will look like for Nexis Games! After all this isn't the first time a game has been shown in its prototype stage and I'm pretty sure it won't be the last.
Thanks for your comments!
I'll just play Gunman Clive, thanks.
@Burn That's a very fun 2d game, good choice but 3d is more our style!
Thanks for your comments!
I can see that some of the areas are in early development (that Cemetery have some real dust problems) but the areas that looks like they're done looks amazing, but I'm a lot more interested in seeing some gameplay and how the FPS mechanics are going to work with it. I'll keep a eye on it.
@Chaoz Thanks for your comments and feedback!
When I saw how the white text blended in with the video to the point where it's close to unreadable, I face palmed. Quick question however, will these be the final graphics, or is this still really early in development?
I saw the text before the video saying it was pre alpha. So I guess what we are looking at is basically a mood board. But anyhoo, an indie 3d open world cowboy adventure floats my boat
While I'm not impressed with this trailer, I am a total sucker for Western games/movies, so if it turns out to be any good, I'll most likely get it.
I don't know where the vitriol is coming from, as I think this looks quite interesting for a indie title developed without the support of major publishers. It could definitely see some improvements, but I applaud the developer for his ambition.
This intrigues me... If the final product ends up being any good then I might give it a shot. I've really enjoyed Outlaws (Although I still need to beat it) so a game similar to it would be great.
I wonder when this one (or 2) man dev will learn to focus on one thing at a time rather than trying to make every single concept that comes into his head a reality.
Even the terrible free font choice made me chuckle.
I'm just surprised they missed how the white font paragraph was over the white background for a bit. Basically impossible to read there. Otherwise, the game looks kinda bad graphically, but it does have some potential.
Good idea. Problem is, RDR did set the bar very high, so yeah, devs (dev?) have a lot to do. They need some merit for trying something different from the 2D platformer invasion, though.
Yyyyyeaaaaah, in my opinion, the biggest problem with Nexis Games is they should avoid showing off footage of games which are so early in development, you build negative hype more than anything else. Or at least limit what you show to parts which look as close to target render as you can. The first few sequences didn't look half bad but once it starts moving, oh boy...
WOW this needs fixing. Or pointing out how early in development it is.
The opening screens look quote impressive. The second half of the reel looks more like a late 90's PC title like Vampire Masquerade or something. BAD screens to be showing publicly without some qualifier statement of it's current state. Will look forward to seeing this develop though as it has potential
Looks decent for something that early in development.
This kinda reminds me of a first person version of Gun which was a game I loved on the PS2! If this game is anything like Gun it will be a must buy for me!
@bro2dragons If that were the case, then it would be "A Cowboys' Tale". Regardless of what way you cut it, there is no apostrophe present in the title at all, which is grammatically incorrect. It's really not worth splitting hairs over, though, we will reserve judgment for this game until it is completed and ready.
They just destroyed my first impression for this game. It is going to be hard to get me to take another look later down the road.
@EvisceratorX In @bro2dragons' defense, "A Cowboys Tale" Is actually grammatically correct. It could simply mean a tale about cowboys, using "cowboys" as an adjective like he said, without the intent of "cowboys" being possessive at all.
That being said, that being the case is very unlikely and would be an odd title choice.
@TeeJay No it isn't, the word "A" makes it singular as it would be talking of only one.
@ikki5 But it is! "A" would be referring to "Tale" the subject, which is singular, since "Cowboys" would be the adjective in this case.
To make it easier to understand, you can take out all the adjectives in a sentence and it would still be grammativally correct. Since "cowboys" is describing what kind of "tale" it is, you can remove it completely and be left with "A Tale" which is still grammatically correct.
Now whether the developer actually meant for this to be the case is another argument altogether, but the fact remains that "cowboys" can be an adjective to describe "tale".
@TeeJay I feel the grammatical argument you are making is kinda thin... Instead of saying "A Cowboys Tale" when using "cowboys" as an adjective literally everybody would phrase it "A Tale of Cowboys."
@TeeJay "A" still refers to the fact that there is one, If you want to pluralize it, then you'd be "Tale of Cowboys", or something similar. The way it is written here, the word "Cowboy" is a noun, not an adjective as the word "A", without any other descriptive factors following it, makes it one.
@TheLobster I know that. I mentioned that several times too. My argument, as I said, wasn't about how likely it is. Simply that it's possible.
I actually very much doubt that's what the way the developer intended to phrase it.
@ikki5 You're first sentence is currect, but then you get off-track from there. "A" would mean one, yes. One Tale.
But, I feel arguing this further is likely to derail the conversation more than it already has, so we should stop splitting hairs and just agree to disagree.
@TeeJay @ikki5 One last thought before I stop:
If we're talking about the football team the Cowboys, then "A Cowboys Tale" is in fact correct!
Nintendo Life, the place people is willing to argue over a freaking title.
@Statusphere this one looks interesting I'm definitely going to keep an eye on the progress of this one.
@jpfan1989 Thank you, we will do our best to make you proud!
@Statusphere
Don't you fear you're overextending yourself a bit? All of your titles look promising but they all take place in a 3D world which sounds crazy expensive. It would be nice for your main focus to be one title (personally UCraft) before you go crazy with announcements with more hella ambitious projects. From the Nexis website it appears you have 3 action/adventure games, a racing game, and a simulation all it the works. SLOW DOWN MAN!
Also is this the game that NinjaPigStudios said they were helping you with?
Nexis Games, the one and only true shovelware company.
But that's just my opinion. I wish you luck in making all these games as there seems to be a long road ahead.
@Ninty4thewin
You don't really know what "pre-alpha" means, do you?
That said, there are some questionable choices for the trailer. The first being the lack of an apostrophe in the title, which just looks lazy. The large text block with a difficult-to-read font is something that should never appear in a trailer in this form--and text should typically be on-screen long enough for it to be read two or three times.
Graphically, it looks pretty nice in parts, though the jittery wagon and bizarre Mars-like super dust storms should have been left out. The main character, when we see him early on, towers over a nearby building.
It's a mixed bag. Some nice textures, some poor shots, some poor execution in the basic creation of the trailer.
@brandonbwii Rest assured that UCraft and The Dance have my full attention in 2015 and on a side note NinjaPig is not helping me with my games. We have plans to work on 1 title together at some point in the future and my role will solely be as programmer.
Thanks for your comments!
@brandonbwii
Depends on how much of the game he's making himself, and how much he's just buying from the Unity asset store. The most expensive part of developing on the Wii U is the dev kit.
I like the open world western theme and am glad to see someone looking to fill a gap on Wii U. When it comes to games on the Wii U, for me, it has to pass 2 tests for sure: 1) Not just be a weak genre cash-in and if good, 2) Not get cancelled. 2016 is a LONG time away at this point, so I'll hope for the best and keep an eye on this one.
@Ninty4thewin
Yeah, they basically broke some (perhaps unwritten) cardinal rules of early trailers--show enough for a good teaser, but if your game is pre-alpha, refrain from gameplay footage, particularly if it looks early.
The text block is just a big "no" for any trailer. If they have that much information to deliver, then it should've been a voice-over or simply shown in a smarter manner. It went off the screen so quickly, I basically thought "I guess I wasn't supposed to read that." And never use too fancy a font for that.
There's a reason we have Arial and Helvetica.
@Statusphere
I'm curious if you work full time or in your spare time. I can only work in my spare time.
@Quorthon Unfortunately most things from the Asset store don't always run on the wiiu and the cost of the dev-kit is less than 1% of the costs involved with making games.
Thanks for your comments!
@Quorthon 2 Jobs and both my own businesses

The next vid will be much better if you guys decide to give us another shot! As always thank you for your comments and support but for now I must return to GameDev.
Have a good day everyone and Nintendo Forever!
PS
I'll admit it the wagon scene is hilarious - that thing is top priority once we finish ucraft! lol
Goodbye for now!
Visually this could be a fine looking game in the end, so I'm not worried about how it ends up looking, obviously how it plays will be important as well. My biggest qualm is the story, like why even bother if that's all you're going to do? And change the name in that case, cuz this is a "Tale" not worth telling. Call it Killer Cowboy, or Loose Canon, or something else I dunno, or make the story so ludicrous that we'll actually want to know what happens next!
@RoomB31
I think Killer Cowboy sounds super amateurish, and if not that, it had better be as ridiculously tongue-in-cheek as Bulletstorm, which lived up to its silly name (and is awesome). Loose Canon doesn't sound bad, but also sounds like a name anyone could come up with. But you have a point. A Cowboys (sic) Tale does not inspire much--compare to Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption, and the aptly titled Gun. Those games inspire their Western style yet don't have that "blah" feel to them. In any other place, Gun would have been bland, but works when you learn it's a Western. Red Dead Revolver sounds like a Western almost entirely on it's own--and one you want to play. My girlfriend was a big fan--she called it "Grand Theft Equestrian."
Ideas are now rattling through my mind... The Rustic, Western Dust, Rust & Repeaters (referencing the old repeater rifles of the era). Something dirty, rustic, battered. Something that speaks of the West. Rattler.
@Quorthon
I never meant the titles to be taken seriously, merely used to emphasize the lack of originality/story.
Your ideas sound great, but shouldn't be wasted on something that won't live up to them.
I look foward to seeign how the game goes!!
Im totally interested. I was a big fan of Gun on the GameCube. We can only hope its right on par with that. I will keep my peepers wide open for this Cowboy's story. I liked the music from the trailer it had a bit of the kill bill feel to it.
reminds me of red dead, I'll wait for reviews and trailers before judging the game,
