Re: Rumour: Koji Igarashi's Castlevania Successor Could Rise From The Grave This Week

@OMC79 I can only speak for myself, but I never said I want the same thing. A new game in the same vein doesn't mean a carbon copy. For example, I'd love a new 2D Metroid, but I'd also love to see them try new things with it, even radically so. Get rid of the obvious space jump and varia suit, and come up with some other abilities. Have Samus start with most of her powers, and center the game around learning to master those, and figuring out all the ways they can be used. Focus on exploration and discovery. Make the world more open from start. They tried the directed approach in Fusion, quite effectively, why not go the opposite way now? Or something completely different. You get the point.

An uninspired copy is not the ideal form of a spiritual successor.

Re: Interview: Yacht Club Games Talk Drawing in 8-bit and Aspirations for Shovel Knight 64

@Haiassai There are probably many things that could be done from a gameplay perspective to make it feel like an N64 game. I'm not an expert on those games, because I didn't own an N64, but for example, I think few if any modern games are quite like Mario 64 in structure and level design.

Visually, maybe they'd do best to "glorify" the N64 graphics, kinda like they already did with Shovel Knight and NES. Maybe use a low poly style and similar usage of color and lighting, but use less blurry textures of more consistent resolution. I'm not sure. A bigger N64 enthusiast than me might know better.

@Haiassai I think old 2D games usually are more timeless than 3D ones, because of abstraction. With 3D games, the race for the most realistic graphics started for real, so often an old 3D game will invite comparison with a newer, and better looking one, and thus look bad. A finely crafted, low-res 2D game will always look impressive. At least to those who can appreciate it.

Re: Nintendo's Implementation of Cross-Buy is Surprisingly Generous

@Spoony_Tech The difference is, here you can promoto a different NNID to get the game for free, by registering it on the Wii U, so you wouldn't have to share an account. It's a bit far fetched and I don't think it will become a problem for Nintendo, but it's still an example of their online systems being a bit clumsy.

But I agree, it's good that they're generous about it.

Re: Remake Request: Super Metroid 3D on Nintendo 3DS

hiptanaka

While a complete remake a la Zero Mission would be great, I'd much rather have a proper Metroid 5. A new 2D Metroid, with a new premise and new ideas for power-ups. But please, more like Zero Mission than Fusion. Non-linear exploration instead of heavily directed and verbose story.

Re: Nintendo Download: 12th March (Europe)

@Chicagoway It makes sense to space out the releases in order to sell each game to a higher percentage of the user base, but yes, it's frustrating. If VC was a monthly service instead, it would make more sense to just throw everything out there.

Re: Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Really Doesn't Like Direct Sequels

hiptanaka

@Captain_Gonru No, he says "when I make a game, I want to start with a new idea from scratch and finish that idea in one game". Of course he would use the name Final Fantasy, since it has recognition. In fact, the first Final Fantasy was his last chance to gain that recognition. He would've been stupid to drop it. (And Square would've never allowed it.)

Re: Weirdness: This Video Uses Super Mario Bros. 2 to Illustrate the Consequences of Capitalism

@Quorthon I think we're talking around each others' points. I agree SMB2, specifically, likely wouldn't exist without capitalism in Japan. My point always was that capitalism isn't necessary for innovation.

More generally, I have an alarm that goes off when someone praises capitalism too one-sidedly. It's important to see both the benefits and problems with all things. Most countries with a capitalist foundation regulates trade in different ways, and balances out the free market with social welfare of some kind. Capitalism doesn't ensure a tolerable life for everyone.
