Yesterday, we reported on a rumour which seemed to suggest that Koji Igarashi - he of Castlevania fame - was about to launch a Kickstarter campaign for his next game. The rumblings appear to have been true, as Igarashi has just launched a teaser site for his next venture - and it allows fans to have some influence on the direction of the project.
The site - named swordorwhip.com - features a 2D rendition of Igarashi himself, dressed and seated like Dracula at the start of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Below him stand two stone columns, each holding a weapon. You can click the weapon you prefer and your vote is recorded - but it's possible to change your mind if you wish.
It's possible to tweet from the page as well, with the hashtag #igavania - a not-so-subtle hint at the kind of game this will almost certainly end up being.
Voting is just one element of the site, however. Clicking weapons several times over generates a series of responses, some of which can be seen below. After a certain amount of clicking, Igarashi's avatar assigns you a clan - which could possibly hint at the mechanics of the game itself.
How have you voted? Let us know by posting a comment.

crack that WHIP!
Whip, of course.
Oh and there will be blood, don't forget it... Mhhh there would be more with a sword now that I think of it, why not both?
So it's really happening. Exciting times!
I vote for the whip, even though the implication seems to be that it's a much more classic game instead of having an extensive equipment system.
Whip it good!
I am now Ose the Obscene of the Katana clan. Alrighty.
Join the clan, or suffer: http://swordorwhip.com/?c=phWcgLqLuxs9UMK9ZDRJZj1WUYvDV2
Whip! Whip! WHIP!
Both! Switch between the two as you need to. Or, you know, have a whip with a sword on the end of it. Either is fine.
"2 dimensions cannot hold me, this is not even my true form"
If sword means Alucard... sorry Belmonts, I'm going with sword for this one.
Eveyone choose the sword please.
We are coming up to the final 5 minutes, I think?
Of course not sword. Whip is the thing.
Why not both?
anyway, sword for 2D castlevania and whip for 3D for me.
He saya "Interesting you've switched sides."
SWORD!!!!!!!
When does this teaser thing end?
"The illness feeds itself, then you feed the illness and then the illness feeds you"
Okay did some digging and the teaser may end on the 11th of May as that's when we'll find out about his new game.
@CaviarMeths I did join, clicked sword, then later clicked whip, and I got this message:
???:
You've been mustered out of your clan for your perfidy. Traitor.
@MadAdam81 Well, that's what you get. Traitor.
???:
From now on, I will call you Paimon the Puzzled. You may call me sir.
I rejoined and clicked sword, it said "You switched side's interesting." Clicking sword again got me the above message.
I'm from Clan : Katana.
And...you my friend?
@Kuhang
I am from clan Katana too. Now let us slay the vermin scum and lay claim to our treasure friend, Also can I fix you a drink? ... Do you not trust me yet?
???:
You seem to like that weapon a lot, Paimon the Puzzled.
I think I worked out what this means-
???:
What do you do when you find yourself without a castle? You build another.
He's building himself another Castlevania....
I would personally have to go with Sword on this one, it's more representative of the Metroidvania series of games.
Even Portrait of Ruin allows you to use swords rather than whips if you like. The whip was usually found in the secondary Belmont mode, the only game really necessitating the whip was Harmony of Dissonance.
I clicked the whip a few times and became a member of the Cat O' Nine Tails Clan but was promptly kicked out for the treasonous act of clicking the sword..
I am FurFur the Frigid weep before my awful name.
Possibly the best response
???:
Is consistency an admirable trait or a hobgoblin...?
Has anybody had this one?
???:
Your clan will fight other clans for treasure. It is just the way of these things.
It's all about the whip. I thought this was a rumor. I will gladly go with it.
Whip
And souls
I vote for sword because a lot of my favourite Castlevania characters had Swords ( Alucard, Soma, Shanoa)
It's interesting when there is a variety of different weapons though.
If there's Clan Katana, Clan Bullwhip an Clan Cat 'o Nine Tails, I am guessing there will be different classes of sword and whip to equip.
For clicking on the whip, I am now Clan: Iron Flail.
Other clans I have gotten are Clan: Rapier and Clan: Broadsword.
Clan Rapier! Yes! Can I have Marth please? the Fire Emblem castle stage in SM4SH U feels like Castlevania SotN actually.
This is the coolest thing ever. Clan Katana for life.
It's Castlevania. The choice should be obvious.
I have never played Castlevania before, but would'nt the "clans" and being able to chose one or the other suggest you can choose between both at some point in the game?
I believe the site is down now?
Apparently I'm Shax the Sanguine of Clan Katana.
Both sword and whip would rock! Iga you are a legend and I hope you never stop making Castlevania (inspired) games.
If IGA is so great and legendary, why can he come up with something new and different? He rather goes the easy, mediocre way of delivering something old and that is been done over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over (I think I still need like 27 "overs"). Why not give the character a gun, or magic or punches? No, it has to be Castlevania with another name, because you want to keep being dumbfounded by the same guy with the same tools.
Inafune and IGA are the Jack Kirby of the videogame industry, they all became nothing but imitations of their past selves. I hope Kojima has more self respect, but we'll probably gonna see him begging for money for a new espionage game.
@MadAdam81 People with self respect and genius build something else, mediocre people build the same thing because they don't like to use brain cells (or probably don't have many left).
Inspired by, spiritual successor, homage; nothing but euphemisms for lazy imitations.
Whip for anyone born before 1992
@OMC79 Iga worked on SotN, made two 2D Castlevanias for GBA, and three for DS. Not 27. All of those have their own unique systems for weapons/magic/upgrading. The last one (Ecclesia) reworked the progression structure quite a bit. Sure, the basics are the same, but they're not the same game over and over.
Nice. I've been noticing this trend of ramping up to a kickstarter which is a very good idea. With these clan things going people feel a little ownership or at least participation before the kickstarter even arrives.
@OMC79 He does this well. His games, while iterative have shown a lot of creativity within the framework. Maybe he wants to do some more interesting things with it, but we aren't always handed the decks we want. He is kickstarting for a reason which could be publishers don't want to support a niche product or he wants more creative freedom, but if he didn't tie it into Castlevania (which is his previous work!) somehow he'd be throwing away his best chance at success.
@OMC79
But... some of his Castlevania games let you use guns, punches, and magic! I love these games. The type of gameplay they offer is very satisfying to me. Perhaps he found what works best for him, enjoys the formula, and knows people like me are going to have the same amount of fun trying it. Theres enough diversity and fresh blood out there to give us something different, so I'd rather have IGA just do what he does best before others fill the void with cheap imitations. Its just like a music genre, everything sounds the same to you unless you are into it. Hey, besides, maybe this is just to get him started on his own. If this is successful he just might try other games, like Inafune did with BUGS vs. TANKS, etc.
As Indiana Jones showed us, I am in Clan: Modern Firearm. Let's see your sword or whip save you from 50 meters or more.
That said, I hope he offers everything: Guns, Swords, Spears, Polearms, Whips, Chains, Ax, Morning Star, Quarterstaff, and of course sharks with laser beams.
The whip but only if it has the 8 direction whip like Super Castlevania IV.
Oh, this is interesting. I'm really looking forward to this =D
I honestly can't decide.
@RupeeClock,
Sword is more representative of Metroidvania? Well, since the "Vania" in that title refers to Castlevania, where all the classics and originals had the main character yield a whip...
@MadAdam81 We are of the same clan. I am Marchosias the Moonlit. Well met.
WAPUSH ! ! !
You know what's the worst about the three I mentioned early, that neither are creators, they only help the creation of what they ended ripping off, Kirby and Inafune did the art and IGA simply directed and produced and got involved since Rondo of Blood. Where's the genius? Sure, they gave great ideas to what they worked on, but that doesn't make them creators, no wonder they couldn't go beyond those works.
@DJKeens Exactly. Circle of the Moon isn't his.
@DJKeens Harmony of Dissonance isn't too hot either, as far as I remember. But Aria more than makes up for that.

Why would anyone not choose whip?
"Have you dabbled in the alchemical arts?" ...paraphrased.
Why not have both? A whip with a sword attached to the end.
hmmm..
???:
There will be other weapons, of course. When I trust you with them.
