Unfortunately, I don't see how this game could ever be fun. Just huge, non-interactive levels with tons of copy-pasted enemies that pose no real threat. I hope I can be proven wrong.
@Sceptic He's probably seen Minecraft, even if he hasn't played it. In any case, I wouldn't want Nintendo to take inspiration from Minecraft. There are many games that do already, and most of them are completely uninteresting to me.
I generally dislike genres, anyway. They simplify too much. But Miyamoto is right about Nintendo games often sharen a certain tone, and a focus on fun mechanics instead of a "serious" story.
@Peach64 It's also a publishing rights issue, I think. Nintendo published games would probably be easy to put on Virtual Console. But the third parties probably have to be convinced, which is probably hard if your game is to be released back to back with Super Mario World or something like that.
@ThomasBW84 Couldn't those numbers be derived? It was 1.2 million sold copies globally, and I think the numbers for Japan and Europe are out. Maybe not Europe.
I think Miyamoto is right to have doubts about VR. It's expensive technology which is far from guranteed to become anything other than a niche peripheral for a small subset of games. A really cool one, but still.
I hope he doesn't turn it into too much of a Skyrim, where content is plentiful but largely uninteresting. If it successfully combines an open world with the fun items and tight gameplay of a Zelda, though, it could be fantastic.
@Peach64 The first day is important, but it's even more important how far the sales fall before they stabilize. If Mario Kart 8 turns out "evergreen", the first day sales will pale eventually.
(That's impossible with the current install base, obviously. Just saying.)
@zeldazero @LDXD In that case, yes it should be patched. Otherwise I don't see it being much different than bunny jumping or rocket jumping in Quake, or one of various skill-based techiniques in Star Craft that were glitches originally. If every vehicle could do it, it would just make the gameplay deeper (but not harder to get into as a newb).
@Peach64 Isn't it already understood that home consoles are kind of cold in Japan right now? I mean, look at the PS4 numbers. It sells even worse than Wii U in Japan.
This bit from the Eurogamer article says more than the percentage, I think:
"Nintendo's racer earned the company its biggest Wii U game launch in the UK to date, and the second best launch for a Mario Kart title ever in the UK."
@6ch6ris6 If all the frames were displayed for an equal amount of time, no. But in this case, every 64th frame is displayed twice as long as the others, which could be perceivable as a small stutter once a second.
@JaxonH I don't disagree with you. Just saying they're not dropping any surprise bombs. Sure, W101 was fresh (and fun), but it's pretty niche. Pikmin 3 was my first Pikmin, and I liked it a lot, but it's something most Nintendo fans have seen before. I'm with you, though. I want no game more than a new 2D Metroid, classic style but with just enough new stuff to make it feel fresh.
I think things would be a bit different if Nintendo had actually released something that feels entirely new on the Wii U. Sequels, and even remakes are fine, as long as they're released along completely fresh games, as well. I hope we'll get to see a fresh take on Zelda, plus a complete surprise, at E3.
I'm slightly interested, but I'm afraid the gameplay will be extremely button-mashy and repetitive. I'm excited to read impressions about it, if nothing else.
@Dreamz Which begs the question, why have the Varia suit at all? If we leave the story out of it, it fills no purpose, other than having you very slowly take damage for a very short section of the game.
It would've made more sense if you found the cold area early on (maybe against Adam's orders), but could only get so far because of the cold damage. Maybe you could get far enough to fetch an energy tank. Then, later, you enter the magma area as part of your objective and Adam unlocks your Varia Suit, after which you can return to the cold area to do more things there.
I'm not trying to bash the game, by the way. I like some of it, and dislike other parts of it. I just like to discuss game design.
The gameplay grows on me as I gradually understand more what they were going for. At first it just felt completely messy because they've thrown precision shooting out the window, but there are some interesting observation/reaction things going on.
One thing I hate about the gameplay, though, is how even things like wall-jumping are contextualized. If there's a wall and you can wall-jump on it, you will need to. If there's a wall you don't need to wall-jump on, you can't wall-jump on it. It reduces the joy of exploring locations.
That's a shame. It's baffling the way they've done that. An especially strange example is the Varia Suit. In other Metroid games, you will encounter an area where heat or cold prevents you from entering without taking damage, sometimes with opportunities for sequence breaking. Then, later, you will receive the Varia Suit and can then come back to those areas. In Other M, you get to a hot area, but it's the only way to go. After a linear path of taking heat damage, Adam says "OK, here's your Varia Suit", and then the same linear path continues. So the Varia Suit has no function as a progression ability, in the sense that removing both the Varia Suit and heated rooms would not have changed the path you can take through the game. Very strange design. And from a story perspective it makes no sense, either. Why didn't he just unlock it as soon as the heat was encountered, if he was planning to, anyway?
@EarthboundBenjy I think I actually agree with you. I can't remember much of it, but I think I enjoyed it more than Castlevania IV last time I played it. I remember the opening stage is really cool, at least.
@CaviarMeths Ok, sounds promising. Does Adam unlocking your weapons get phased out, as well? It always felt more satisfying to get a new weapon/ability as a result of finding a hidden item, like in the 2D Metroids, instead of a guy sporadically unlocking it for you.
I'm a few hours into Other M, and my biggest complaint is that Adam seems to be more of the main character/hero than Samus. All she talks and thinks about is Adam. It's horrible. I also feel the generic team of badass marines makes it feel too much like an action B-movie. In Metroid, I want to feel isolated and self-dependent. Just me and a planet/ship/whatever to explore.
From a gameplay perspective, Other M has some strong ideas. I do prefer the 2D games, but at least it tries something different (and without aping other popular franchises).

@Faron Nice, can you point me to one of those? I'm just going by what I've seen from gameplay demos, mostly the ones from E3.

Re: Cross-Buy is Now a Thing on Nintendo Platforms
Cool. The should make a more system-level feature from it, however, for example allowing save transfers in a standardized way.
Re: Miyamoto Thinks That Nintendo Are in a Genre of Their Own
That said, I want Metroid to keep a more serious tone, but with minimalistic storytelling.

1.2 million in 2 days, then 2 million in a month. Sounds like they're keeping the momentum pretty well after release.

@Varoennauraa I wouldn't, but I certainly wouldn't say no to it, either. Any proper 2D Metroid will make my day.
Re: Microsoft's Ken Lobb: Metroid Prime Wouldn't Have Been Made If Nintendo Had Listened To The Fans
@element187 I simply prefer to play my games on a TV with a controller in my hands. And I prefer 2D Metroids over the Prime series. That's all.
Plus, this wouldn't run on 3DS: http://www.dsogaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/super_metroid___depths_of_tourian_by_elemental79-d5z66m9.jpg
