I thought Wizardry was popular in Japan at the time. I've heard it cited many times as the inspiration for the early JRPGs like Dragon Quest and FF. Is this wrong? I guess Wizardry may have become popular not until after The Black Onyx.
@ejamer Well, the reward to the backers for wildly surpassing the goal is that the game gets more content. I think that's the best reward the backers can get.
For example, Project Eternity at the original goal had something like 5 classes to pick from. Now they're at 11 classes (I think), and lots of additional features and a much bigger world to explore. They were also able to bring on board CRPG legends like Tim Cain and George Ziets with the extra money. Some games with a limited scope or a more specific idea won't benefit from a larger budget, but in those cases that should be made clear.
Finally, yes, everyone should do their homework and weigh in the risk of the project not happening. I mostly back projects made by people with a good track record and a history with the genre.
In addition to what you said, Kickstarter also allows people to donate more than the game would ever sell for, which allows a smaller crowd to finance the game than would otherwise be possible.
As long as people do proper sanity checks on projects, Kickstarter is an amazing thing. It makes games happen that would never happen otherwise, and it's well on its way to revive an entire genre this year, with all the old-school CRPGs coming.
Just Project Eternity, Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera make up half of those "total outstanding Kickstarer $". Those games are definitely coming, so the numbers are a bit misleading.
The thing with Kickstarter is, you shouldn't just throw your money at something that sounds cool. Do some research on the team first. Do they seem trustworthy to finish a project, and have they made good things in the past?
As if being a "kid's console" has anything to do with it. They abandoned Wii U because it has a too small install base to be a real business opportunity for them, nothing else. EA would not shy away from selling games to kids if it made them money. In fact, looking at the crowds around FIFA at GameStop, I'd say they already do.
@Peach64 It's in the same order of magnitude as the GameCube. That's positive compared to many earlier months. And it's better than last year, which is a positive pattern.
I think it'll do fine enough for us to get good games for a pretty long while, which is all that matters, really.
@Peach64 In this case it's more like, "don't get excited when a Kickstarter has a gameplay video that looks amazing, because it might not be actual gameplay".
I was excited for this, but never for the claim alone.
Not saying it can't still turn out cool. It's just a development video. But it's a far cry from the pitch video.
@ThreadShadow That would be Metroid 5. The last numbered entry was 4. I'd really prefer them to keep the main Metroid series 2D, though. 2D graphics won't happen, but at least 2D gameplay.
Quotes like these, along with the occasional superb game like the recent ALBW, are the things that put Nintendo on a pedestal for me, despite their missteps and missed opportunities. They really understand and care about games.
I seem to be in the minority in not liking Xenoblade. X still looks cool, but I hope they drop a lot of the faux MMO and copy-paste stuff. The world feels rich at first, until you realise all the content is samey collectibles and fetch quests.
@FluttershyGuy Oh yes. I fondly remember Pocky & Rocky. I'd get that for VC in a heartbeat. Or a sequel, as long as it's good and has the same visual charm.
Looks fun. I really, really liked Nifflas' "Within a Deep Forest", but after that I felt most of the games were a bit empty. This seems to have a bit more of what I like, including the bouncing ball.
@Kruger85 I think part of it is an ignorant public, in the sense that there has been very little marketing, while Knack and PS4 posters are plastered all over game stores.
Not surprising if marketing is as bad in the UK as it is here in Sweden. I haven't seen a single ad or poster for 3D World, and GameStop didn't even have the game on the shelves on launch day. Knack is plastered all over the place.
This is how the first Mario Galaxy did the first week, for comparison:
Japan: 261k (264% better than 3D World)
USA: 527k
Europe: 154k
But the Wii also had a much larger install base at the time (I assume).
If history repeats, 3D World should've sold 200k in USA by now.
@AJWolfTill I really like the atmosphere. The problem is there is nothing interesting to find in the world. Only random collectibles and monsters. The music is great, yes.
This could be really fun. It really looks like they've designed it from the bottom up, with little regard to established concepts in platformers or shooters. I love "gamey" games with abstract premises like these, where game mechanics is king.
I thought Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 and WWHD would make more difference than they did, but in hindsight, they are two niche games and an HD remake. Nintendo's real chance to mass appeal starts now with SM3DW and continues with DK, MK and hopefully some surprise. 9 million by April sounds unlikely, but who knows.
So a bunch of animation/movie people bossing around the game developers at Nintendo is a good idea? One main reason I like Nintendo is they put gameplay first, in an age where games are becoming Hollywood movies.

Iwata takes another Demi. We can expect a Limit Break, soon.

Re: Kickstarter Research Highlights Low Delivery Rates of Game Projects
@ejamer "Especially when the game is already getting created without my backing and will be available..."
There are many instances where the game will not be made at all unless it's Kickstarted.
Re: Kickstarter Research Highlights Low Delivery Rates of Game Projects

Re: EA's Peter Moore States That "Nintendo's A Great Partner" In Reaction To Claims of "Dead" Relationship

Re: Nintendo Was Dead To Us Very Quickly, States EA Source
@XFsWorld The last game I played in any of those franchises was Need for Speed 2, in the 90s. So to me it's OK.

Re: $1.2 Billion Wiped Off Nintendo's Market Value As Share Prices Plummet

As far as I understand, a drop like this just means many shareholders don't believe in the company's future.

We can always hope for better numbers in NA and Europe.
Doesn't really matter, though. I'll just enjoy the game.
Re: Super Mario 3D World Underwhelms on Japanese Chart Début
@Worthy
Wii Party U sold 76k the first week in Japan. Super Mario 3D World sold 99k. So it did better, but still not very good, of course.
Re: Super Mario 3D World Underwhelms on Japanese Chart Début
The game itself sold well compared to other Wii U titles, though. Better than anything since NSMBU, I think.

Frankly, I really didn't like Xenoblade. It felt like an MMO, complete with pointless quests and grindy combat, with no other players in it.
Whatever they did for Zelda, though, they seem to have done right.
