@Agramonte If we assume 50,000 switches sold per week is an average (my guess would be it's a slow week?), that amounts to 2,600,000 over a year, which is 13% of the 20,000,000 switches Nintendo hopes to sell this year. So irrelevant is a bit harsh. US is the biggest market, but Japan pulls its weight, too.
@Cobalt I have a Steam account, but I prefer to play in front of the TV, and that's more cumbersome with Steam, as I don't have a computer hooked up all the time.
@Cobalt While it can be annoying, I don't think it's unconventional for re-releases on new platforms to bump the price? The cycle begins again, after all. First you sell to people willing to pay for new games, then you sell to people who only buy on sales.
@Cobalt Funny. I have the opposite problem. The other week I had an urge to play Portal, a game that I missed when it was new. I was disappointed to find out neither it nor the sequel are on the PS4 store, despite being so highly praised. The more old greats to be re-released, the better.
@Fake-E-Lee I definitely will. I recently 3D printed a vertical stand for the Switch as I enjoy shmups and wanted to try some that way, but holding it in your hands seems way better because of the smaller distance to the screen.
The key is in the second quote: "There are a variety of ways in which classic games from Nintendo and other publishers are made available on Nintendo Switch". Publishers have taken control of the monetization and marketing of their old games. And curation and added value are probably more successful strategies than an extensive library. (Of games people say are too expensive.) Capcom has Mega Man Legacy Collection, Disney Afternoon Collection, etc. Nintendo's answer is the Switch Online thing.
It sounded good until I saw the video. The animations look extremely stiff, almost like early pre-rendered 3D, Donkey Kong Country style? Maybe the teaser is just badly constructed, but I'm getting the sense this is really cheap.
@Kalmaro I would argue that it works better offline. When playing online, all the secrets and upcoming bonfires are spoiled by user messages, which takes some mystery out of the game. It has its upsides, but I actually played most of Bloodborne and DS3 offline to get a pure experience.
I wasn't thrilled about how Samus Returns turned out, so I kinda hope it's a different team. At this point I'm starting to feel like nobody at Nintendo has a vision for the future of 2D Metroid.
@Savino That's different. Motion controls and touch screens were part of their products. 4K is dependent on adoption of a product they don't create and have no control over.
@ricklongo @leo13 The Kotaku article clearly states that the Direct Mini will cover other upcoming games. Dark Souls will be the last of the announcements.
@brandonbwii Maybe. But the review should be telling me that, not you. Also, those games seem different enough that I'm not sure anyone who likes Elliot Quest would like The Mummy: Demastered, or vice versa.
I wonder if they got the input lag down. It was pretty bad on an earlier demo. You can't really make a judgement of that in this video since he's not playing.
@Dan_Dan I see. But Nintendo is probably talking to Nvidia about long term plans for the platform. Maybe they have something custom in the pipeline for Switch?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The joycons are fine for handheld mode. They're obviously not perfect with the grip or as separate controllers, but it's still pretty cool to get all that out of the box, and being able to take it with you as one unit. When I play docked, I usually use the pro controller.
@jimi There are hard levels, yes, but you can usually farm lives really easily on other levels. The only consequence of lives is then that you sometimes have to take a break to collect them.
Lives still have a place in (some) modern games, but they haven’t mattered in Mario for a long time. They were more or less designed to never let you run out of lives.
More seriously, the game is a lot more interesting than that. It has a pretty complex and versatile move set, where you can dodge roll, shoot arrows into walls and use as platforms, etc, and the level design is really good. The levels I’ve played (especially the first one) are like puzzles you need to figure out, and on successive plays, a dance that you get better at as the controls become more natural.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets It’s great, but not for everyone. It’s a really hard game that requires you to play deliberately and without mistakes. One bad input can screw everything up.
I played it for a few hours on PC and got to the second boss a few times. I will get it again for Switch and see if I can get further.
Samus Returns doesn't quite tick all the boxes for me so far. The core gameplay is great, but the locations are a bit non-distinct and repetitive at times, and I don't really care for fighting the same boss over and over (nor did I in M2 or AM2R). I also feel there should be more enemies that don't charge. I never quite get the feeling of exploring a strange place, as every critter is seemingly out to get me. Still enjoying it, but not at the level of Super/Fusion/Zero Mission.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE A handheld only 1/3 use as a handheld, and 1/3 use as a handheld some of the time.
There seems to be a more or less fully functional browser in there already, only not available to the user. It's used throughout the UI in various places. Hopefully they will polish it up and make it available.
@chriscare I don't know. Many devs take the time to add HD rumble support and stuff like that for Switch. Buy yeah, devs that don't really care won't add it, but I'd be fine with that.
@thedicemaster Exactly. I think it would be pretty cool if there was an OS level API that the developer could use for exporting some of the game data in a less rigid way. Then the game could have well integrated challenges and stuff like that, but also let the OS know about some of the player's progress. Different games could have different ways of presenting progress and "achievements". I don't know exactly how it would work, but something like that would be a lot more fun than the current achievements/trophies, imo.
@chriscare But in my opinion, it's much more satisfying if these challenges are in-game, so that they can have an actual context, unlock bonus features, and such.
90% of achievements are badly designed, plus they exist in a vacuum with no feedback into the game itself. Even most well designed achievements, I'd rather have as in-game challenges with actual setup and/or context.
Maybe if Nintendo has some unique spin on the concept, I'll be more interested.

Re: Capcom’s Mega Man X Legacy Collection Soundtrack Booklet Looks To Be Teasing New Game
They should release a ”Mega Man XX” (double X) in 2020. 2020 in roman numerals is MMXX.
Re: Hands On: Taking The Path Less Traveled In Octopath Traveler
@Cobalt You didn’t like Mario Odyssey then?
Re: Review: Inside (Switch eShop)
@Cobalt It's just more of a hassle. The point is if Portal was on every platform, I could buy it where I most want it.

@MagnaRoader They talk about that in the video.
Re: Here's How A Nindie Developer Thinks The Switch eShop Could Be Improved
Mostly good ideas. It needs some of this stuff, at least.
I would also add: Notification when something on your watch list is on sale. I don't think it has anything like that now.

Re: Put Your Wallet Away, Mario Kart Tour Will Be "Free To Start"
A bit worrying, but they did call Super Mario Run "free to start", and I liked that model. Pay once, get everything.

@Porkins Yep, I hope I'm wrong. I like a good arcadey action game.

Not too surprising, given they're full priced ports of older games.

Switch 2. Better specs. Same basic interface. Backwards compatible. Some games will be marked as "Requires Switch 2".
