Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of Mario Kart World Are In

@HingryHuppo I think you're using the word 'scarcity' to imply brand recognition, utility, desirability, "people liking a certain type of game"... I understand you but it's just confusing to discuss this way.
Scarcity, in the economic sense - and you mentioned economics - it is not.

A potato is scarce. You need to grow it. You need land, water, work to grow every single one.
A mobile phone is scarce, there's work again, and rare metals that need to be mined from the earth for every single one.

Mario Kart World, once developed, is not scarce. It's just a 20GB (or whatever) file sent over the internet with close to 0 costs. Nintendo could pretty easily have one Mario Kart World sent to every single inhabitant of the earth. The product is not scarce.

You know why it works with your 2nd hand game examples? Their value goes up exactly because they BECOME scarce. They were not scarce before, but once they are out of print, not made anymore, they then BECOME scarce and that's why their price can now move freely according to laws of demand and supply. Before that they didn't apply. At least not the supply side.

EDIT: I'm being a bit of an economics or semantics nazi. And I don't like it actually. I just don't like the usage of the word, but I understand your point: the Nintendo experiences are unique and people love them - so they can get away with charging a lot for them.

@HingryHuppo scarcity VS desirability makes no sense when it comes to games. You are talking about a basic microeconomics model where there are many sellers selling an identical product, and many buyers. Then the equilibrium is found between supply and demand.

This is a situation where there is only one seller, with unlimited supply of the product, and that seller would not change the price no matter what. It is not connected to scarcity in this situation . In microeconomics this is called perfect elasticity of supply.

@480frames-please I dunno man, I was hoping that you'd stop and smell the roses once technology reached your goalpost. But you're already in the next goalpost!! Is this a metaphor for all humanity and how we never let ourselves enjoy things?

I hear you though, you do sound happy. I thought before that you were always complaining about games never reaching your lofty expectations from them, but now you sound like someone who is just very excited about the future.

Excuse me for thinking about you so much, stranger from the Nintendo site whom I only know by their username.

The new DK, gameplay-wise, looks like something we never really played before.

It's a 3D platformer with maps that have full verticality, mainly verticality that goes DOWN not up, and you can reach your goals by going through the environment in any way you like.

Since Red Faction released in 2001 we didn't get many destructible environment games, and as far as I know never a platformer.

DK is something truly fresh. My guess is that Nintendo EPD were testing new central gameplay mechanics (like planets in Galaxy or the capture mechanic in Odyssey) for the new Mario game, and when they saw that this destruction gameplay was fun they realized it better suits a Donkey Kong as a character than Mario.

Re: Opinion: Oh No, I'm Not A Fan Of Switch 2's Mouse Mode At All

@-wc- The mouse feature is not a Homer-Simpson-car-feature. It's useful, a lot of people want it, even if they're not the majority. It is good for RTS games, for Mario Maker, for FPS games. It's useful for Metroid! It's not for you - fine. But it's so far from being a useless feature or just a gimmick.

Lots of non-enthusiasts for mousey here. I'm excited for it. I did start my gaming life on a PC, and I still am unable/unwilling to play an FPS with analog sticks. I hate it. So Wii pointer was perfect for me, and I'm loving this mouse idea too. I hope it'll be comfortable, and yes, a shell seems necessary.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct?

geshem

I'd give it a 6. As a whole it was entertaining. But I'm not excited for much, def not excited enough to get day 1.

I'm most excited for Metroid with 120FPS 4K and mouse controls!

DK will probably be great, but I was disappointed it wasn't the new 3D Mario game.

The paid manual game is just insane.

Silksong is exciting but I'm sure it would be on other consoles too.

Overall... A little bit meh.

Re: 'Switch 2' Replica Showcased By Accessory Maker Genki At CES 2025

@Olliemar28 I don't know, I feel like timing and rhythm of revealing things matter. The OG Switch did the announcement thing really well, got us really excited, and then rode that wave quickly into a launch.

They will ride an announcement quickly into a launch this time too. But the excitement for the reveal part is just not really there.

If they really impress with the games and with the new mouse/IR feature the excitement comes right back for me.

But if they don't then I might wait and not get it day 1. I feel like this would have been different if the announcement timing thing and building hype would have been managed differently.

Interesting the variety of game experiences on show in the comments:

#1 never heard of it.
#2 didn't buy it because it was missing something he deemed important.
#3 bought it but returned because of a thing that they deemed important.
#4 loved the first one but doesn't want to play the next one.
#5 loved the first one and wants to play the next one.

So many different interactions and responses to the same thing. Humans are interesting
