Many of you will no doubt remember BOXBOY!, a quirky puzzle platformer from HAL Laboratories that came out last spring. We gave it a 6/10, noting that it's a solid game, but it plays things a little too safe. Nonetheless, it apparently was a fairly popular title, as Nintendo has just announced a sequel.
The new game will be called BOXBOY! ONE MORE BOX and it places players in control of Qbby once more as he navigates a variety of block themed puzzles. It appears to bear a lot of similarities to its predecessor, but it'll be interesting to see what new ideas are introduced here. For now, the game has only been announced for Japan, but it wouldn't surprising if this one came west, too. Check out the announcement trailer:
What do you think? Would you like to see this release in the west? What did you think of the first one? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I got Boxboy but didn't play it much. I'll give it another shot soon. Then I'll see about the sequel.
I loved Boxboy. And I would love to see a sequel. It did play things safe, but it had a simplistic charm I most definitely wouldn't mind trying again. It was fun. Plus, I like what I see a for the sequel lready. lol
I definitely loved the first one. And I'll be looking forward to this sequel.
I'd like to see full fledged levels this time with maybe some exploration or backtracking. Maybe you can carry over your "maximum length" to previous levels and reach areas you couldn't before for collectibles.
In any case I'm excited! Come to the west! Please!
Yay! Boxboy 1 was awesome! I can't wait for the sequel
Is there really a demand for this in the West?
Great news, really enjoyed the first one.
@Xenocity actually yes. It was most likely extremely cheap to make and was on the best selling 3ds dl list for quite some time. Also with the engine and design down it could have been made in a few months by a team of five or so.
Another title for my wishlist!
@faint
Maybe so.
But I have heard of plenty of people refusing to play it due to it being black and white.
So excited for the game! Really liked the first game, so I'll definitely pick up the second game!
@Xenocity yea and the 3ds is owned by many gamers who had a game boy back in the day. You know what a vocal minority is right?
One of my favourite download games. Definitely looking forward to this.
Hmm, I wasn't a big fan of the first one. But we'll see.
Oh sweet, I loved the first one.
Actually, this one "one more box" mechanic was used in the final two worlds of Box Boy, and these were some really fun levels.
A whole game using this should be great.
I was going to say I don't mind it being black and white, but I guess what I really want is a slightly more detailed Game Boy style monochrome. The graphics are pretty lazy as they are.
Well the game seems interesting anyway. I'm waiting for a sale.
I always thought that 6/10 was way too low for the first one, I'm glad it didn't put me off buying it. I'd easily bump that to about an 8/10.
So we might actually get a decent 3DS eShop update this year!?
I forgot Nintendo Life gave BoxBoy! only an average rating. It's a fantastic game. Simple, addictive, charming, challenging. Download it now if you haven't played it yet. Easily one of the best 3DS games of 2015.
I bought BOXBOY! recently during the holiday sales. Pretty great little game that actually pushes you pretty hard near the end with the puzzles (if you want to get the collectibles). I hope the sequel does some cool stuff to keep it all fresh, and I would love to see the graphics add some color in cool ways.
Will get this day one if it makes it across.
NL was way of in their rating for the original imho, fantastic little game.
I got it but lost interest. It just wasn't...well...interesting, really. It was cute though, I'll give it that.
Ahhh, should have known. Why else would they have Boxboy badges in the Badge Arcade?!
I didn't pick up the original. I'd get it if it ever went on sale, but I highly doubt it will. Have HAL ever had a sale? I did pick up Kirby Fighters on sale once... so fingers crossed.
ughhh! Nintendo i haven't even pick up the original yet
oh well, it's not too late,
Really surprised by NL's score on the original BOXBOY! I could have sworn they ranked it higher. I really enjoyed the original and how it kept me interested per world to see what new mechanic they came up with. Didn't even consider a sequel would come out though! Great news!
I'm actually among the people who thought the first game had issues (it was way too slow to start), but the 6/10 Nintendo Life review was simply a disgrace. Embarrassing.
YES SO EXCITED
Boxboy was my favourite pluzzer on the 3DS, better than Pushmo because it's really a brain teaser since level 1, while Pushmo has over 50 levels too easy even for little kids.
Now it seems they DOUBLED the abilities you have on the first time
6/10 was really underrated guys. 8/10 minimum!
@Gavin_Rozee we still have February what is going to be the best month on the 3DS.
Guess I better finish the first one. . .
I got Box Boy when it went on sale late last year, and I loved it. Its NintendoLife review is one of few that I really disagree with. I'd give it an 8/10, easy. Hopefully the sequel is just as good or better.
I still need to get box boy 1!
Released the same day as its announcement. The marketting budget is literally zero lol. Hope it's as good as the first. A real hidden gem of the eshop
Yaaay! I hope they make the difficulty curve a little less lumpy, but yaaay!
@Xenocity sucks for them. My question is what's wrong with high contrast? I think it works great for this game or any of its type and really highlights the environment and nature of it all. I don't know, seems like the people who would complain about black and white would also think graphics make the game rather than how fun it is. ::rolls eyes:: Not saying that's you but they're out there...
Boxboy! is a great game. Simple and creative with it's puzzle gameplay. The very simplistic nature and graphical style works for it, I think. As much as I like NL's reviews and honesty, that 6/10 review felt like a complete miss. I read the comments, that everyone else seemed to love it, so I took a $5 chance. I haven't regretted it at all. Not perfect, and a bit repetitive, but still, no regrets for 5 bucks.
Now for a sequel. I'm passively optimistic. I'm just curious how much different (or the same) it will be.
@faint
You know what a "hardcore" gamer is right?
It's not a vocal minority but gamers from across the board who gave up playing B&W games in the 90s.
The game didn't sell that well.
Nearly all the gamers I know in person are truest definition of "hardcore" and play AAA blockbuster games (mainly shooters) and won't touch anything else.
I streetpass someone at my work who's always playing this game. No idea who they are though.
Skimming through the comments I see more people enjoyed box boy than disliked but that could also because it's a sequel announcement 😛 Anyways I still have money in my eshop account and it's between this or Elliot's quest. I have been leaning towards this though.
Yaay! I put off buying Boxboy for quite a while cause it looked a bit too simple, and didn't have stereoscopic 3D. Once I did have it I played almost non-stop though. Turned out to be a perfect little game.
I hope the sequel is in colour. I haven't played the first Boxboy yet but I intend to - I played Gameboy games back in the day but I just hate black and white.
