Many years ago, I wanted a Game Boy. I wanted it more than anything else in the world, in fact. Sadly, my parents refused to buy me one until it was my birthday, so in the meantime I did the next best thing - I made my own console out of a cardboard box, coloured it all in so it looked suitably authentic and stuck a static screenshot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan on the front to finish it off. I even made cardboard cartridges to slot into the back, such was my desire to create an object that was convincing enough to pass as the real thing.
Mercifully, I did eventually get my Game Boy, but that little episode proves that kids will go to ingenious lengths when it comes to wish fulfilment - and I can now rest easy in the knowledge that this tradition is still going strong, thanks to Japanese Twitter user fraise_ama.

The user explains that their younger brother has recently been denied a Nintendo Switch by their mother, and has decided to create his own console - complete with dock, Joy-Con, Joy-Con grip and game card - to fill the void.
We're sure you'll agree that this kid shows incredible dedication and promise - surely that much creative effort should be rewarded with the real thing?

I wonder if his dock scratches the screen? If not, he should sell them and buy a real switch!
That's pretty cool. Hope no one makes the mother out as a villain in the comment section.
Be careful if it overheats that things can burn your fingers!
...and the whole house down.
That's pretty cool how everything slides together like the real thing!

Nintendo needs to give this kid a Switch. He's earned it.
Whilst I hope he eventually gets one, I also hope he gets it when his parents believe it is time (so he learns patience, respect and the fact you can't have everything immediately) or he manages to earn it himself (and learns that effort, hard work and results brings rewards).
How did this kid makes this?! Is he some cardboard-genius? When I was younger, if I didn't get a certain action figure I just pretended that I had it. Worked for me! I would've NEVER thought to use some sort of material to make a custom one.
@Koke Or maybe not getting a switch was a form of punishment by his mother. We really don't know why he didn't get one, maybe it was because of finances. Or maybe it was because he wasn't getting adequate grades in school.
I used to use clay or paper to make consoles I couldn't get yet, I was nowhere near on this kid's level!
@Koke That's not how the world works.
@Nintendoforlife, either way, considering how the kid is trying to shame his parents into getting him a switch, he should be grounded.
@Koke They wouldn't give Zelda a copy of her game, this kid has no chance.
Haha! I did this when the Wii was announced. We played a video of gameplay on the TV and pretended we were playing it. Yes. I'm young.
@FX102A
Yeah maybe it's a matter of waiting for birthday or Christmas. Or maybe they just don't have the finances. But it's awesome that he is making good use of his imagination and creativity. Hopefully he'll eventually get one.
@bloodycelt Who's to say he's not already grounded haha, hence the creation of this Switch.
@bloodycelt No he isn't! He just made a cool cardboard version of a thing he wanted, and his older brother agreed in it's supreme coolness and posted a video of it on Twitter.
@bloodycelt That's not what's happening at all. How do you get this;
"either way, considering how the kid is trying to shame his parents into getting him a switch, he should be grounded."
From this;
"The user explains that their younger brother has recently been denied a Nintendo Switch by their mother, and has decided to create his own console - complete with dock, Joy-Con, Joy-Con grip and game card - to fill the void." ?
@ThatNyteDaez The Ellen Show says otherwise
@ThatNyteDaez He sounds like one of those perma-offended PC SJWs
This is exactly what I used to do as a kid. I did all kinds and always took the extra step. For example, I made a console look-alike where I could slide a paper in and out to make it look like I was playing a platformer game. I also used Kinder Surprise eggs (the plastic capsule inside) + cardboard to make my custom Beyblades. I got them to spin using the "launchers" that came with the actual toys so for me they were as good as the official ones I had. Nowadays I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to arts and crafts that I stop halfway through if I'm not happy with how things are turning out. (Looking at the Fire Emblem Olivia drawing I started weeks ago but haven't finished.)
Why did she deny it? That would have been the last thing I did if I was a parent.
Lol not too shabby a job
Can it run Paper Mario?
As somebody who entered your Switch competition and wants to win probably more than anything I've ever wanted, I would be SO HAPPY if one of the prizes were cancelled and sent to this kid. More creative than anything the majority of us have done I'm sure.
Tha Dock scratches the screen
Posted this in the forums a few hours ago. It's really impressive. The paper model that is.
I did like this.
@ThatNyteDaez If Nintendo now responds to cow-milking challenges, this kid definitely has a chance.
That's so awesome! I hope that kid gets a Switch soon!
@Piersen
Um... yeah.
It will run Paper Mario, Paper Metroid, Paper Emblem, Paper Animal Crossing, etc in 2D. XD
Just kidding.
Slow news day then.
I guess I'm the only one that thought building this cardboard Switch for his younger brother was sweet. I have a younger sister, and I could t have been bothered to spend a hour of my day trying to make her happy.
When my parents wouldn't buy me something I would put all my efforts in getting the item myself. I would mow lawns or rake leaves till I had enough money. Then I would walk to the store. This was when I was 10 years old.
Wow, I'm starting to sound like Granddad. Lol!
Poor little git!
poor dude.... as gamers we have all been there
Can you use Google Cardboard with it and the YouTube app?
Should come bundled with a new Paper Mario game. Made of paper.
Jeez it sucks that now this parent is going to be shamed because her kid won't accept her decision. We don't know their story, could be financial reasons, the kid could be slacking in school...anything. Cool that the kid crafted this mockup out of cardboard though...hope he has a good imagination. Gonna be hard to play Zelda on that thing otherwise.
@Menchi187 Funny, the real dock doesn't scratch screens either.
@Anti-Matter haha... How do you put pics up? Nobody will tell me
@Amsterdamsters it does... If your a lol
dio che tristezza
Like somebody once said : " Someone, Get this Soldier a Switch !! "
@Amsterdamsters. I never had that problem either
This makes me appreciate being an adult and being able to buy my own things more. But hey we've all been there. I had to wait 5 years to get a SNES after it came out.
Parents can be so cruel sometimes!
Unless it was due to financial reasons, of course - in that case the mother's hands were tied.
@Menchi187 (I know you meant this as a joke, but) it's been proven recently that you don't need the dock at all. You can just use a USB-c cable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQZqKoi86Mk
Hope the little tyke gets one eventually!
@NintyNate
Oh, I use imgur.com to upload my photo.
If I win the Switch competition on this site twice the second one will go to home. (The first has already been earmarked for Birmingham children's hospital!)
@NintyNate What are you like 12?
@Amsterdamsters I'm 30 lol why?
@Anti-Matter ohh i see! I want to upload pix sometimes from phone but won't let me lol cheers
Ha! kids are stupid
@NintyNate Never mind...I misread your reply to me...sorry.
I felt that poor boy. Some parents.......
That's actually quite sad to be fair. Hopefully he gets one in the end.
@Gregory123
Stupid ?
Pardon me ?
If he was stupid, he couldn't make those Switch replica.
@Light-Of-Hope
Some parents nowadays are too lazy to update their gaming knowledge and their mindset.
..nice job, you can't even tell the left Joy-Con from a real one...
The article doesn't mention the homeless man the kid killed to get the cardboard.
Reminds me of my first "computer", heh. The children's IT encyclopedia I had (and still have, actually) featured the blueprints for a full PC set papercraft among its activity pages. Not being any smarter than I am nowadays, I copied the pictures via tracing them 1:1 which made the resulting construction... redefine palmtop computers, to say the least. XD But I even made colorful paper floppies for the thing which were smaller than a pinky thumb. Those were the days!
For the love of the game.
I so wanna buy this little guy a Switch.
@Jacadamia
I just prayer the parents and or parent figure nurtures that skill. Who knows, maybe he'll start a craze.
This bring so many memories, I did the same when I was a kid, about 8.. but with the psone.. 14 years later I was able to buy my own ps2.. my addiction started there...
I grew up with an NES and GameBoy (both with very small libraries) until N64 came out. I wouldn't get to fully enjoy SNES games until the Wii Virtual Console.
I went to the source article and found one detail not mentioned here is that the kid is in fifth grade. It might be different in Japan, but I was 10 in fifth grade. That's kind of borderline when it comes to letting kids have a somewhat expensive game system. That's for the parents to decide. I got a Genesis when I was 10. I was also responsible and took care of my stuff unlike some people I knew. There are a lot of assumptions being made in these comments with too little information. Maybe the parents are "cruel" or strict about it. Or maybe they have other reasons. There could be many. Maybe he's not responsible enough for a new Switch that he could drop or lose due to its portability. Maybe the parents think the Switch accessories are too expensive right now. Maybe they think the 3DS is more appropriate(and less painful to lose). As for the mentions of the parents being shamed, based on what is stated here, their problem would be with the older brother. It would be bad if this kid was punished and didn't have anything to do with it. That's a quick way to create resentment.
Next step would be to paint it π. It's pretty amazing how creative kids get. Hope they eventually get a switch though. βΊοΈ
I did this too with the original gameboy back in the day. Haha. I even had the game screenshot on the back of the cartridge so when you slid in the cartridge, the screenshot would be on the screen. Good times. Lol
@bloodycelt Please tell me you're joking. Shaming his parents?
@MegaVel91 yeah its a time honored tactic kids do, try to make mom feel bad for not getting them a toy. Now the kids' mom has to deal with everyone around her complimenting her kid and asking when she's going to buy the kid a switch.
The kid should be grounded, if he had the free time to do that, he could've been helping around the house.
@Amsterdamsters tis fine π
@bloodycelt Thank you. Don't tell people how to parent their own kids. I would have grounded his arse for the publicity stunt...this should not have been posted on social media.
I was absolutely this kid growing up. My parents never allowed any Nintendo machine in the house, so it was easier to join the ranks of the PC master race.
Now that I'm an adult, the Switch will be the first Nintendo console I own. Can't wait to introduce Mario Kart to my two young sons.
Guys no need to hate on this kid. He might be getting one for his birthday or something later.
Took a note from Arby's.
@bloodycelt @Ryu_Niiyama totally agree with both. Well said
Aww its kayuuutt!!!
It's obvious to me that the parents know some sad sap online will donate a Switch now this has gone viral.
Nintendo should get this kid a switch. Of course... take care of the stock issues first... but set one aside for this kid.
This reminds me of when I wanted a Game Boy Color just so that I could play Pokemon. I wanted one so badly that I crafted a purple GBC out of paper and markers. I created a Pokemon Blue Cartridge that could slot into the back, and created Pokemon sprites that could easily be taped to the screen. The Elite Four didn't stand a chance against my Charmander and Squirtle. ^_^
Wait... How do we know the kid is shaming their mother over something like that? We don't even know the situation. (And can anyone here even understand Japanese to confirm?)
Edit: Oh, apparently the kid is -five years old- Edit#2: Grade 5. (So much for internet translation, I should know better. )
Even so, that's pretty young to have any expensive mobile device. I wouldn't even give such a young kid a cell phone or tablet of any kind- the mother made a good decision. She won't contribute towards nuking her kid's young, spongy brain. I think a 2DS or New 3DS would be a fine gift for a holiday or birthday, though! (Yeah, the older brother could have it, but the younger brother would inevitably want a piece of it. By the way, what age is the older brother?)
Not surprising at all. The only time I'd consider buying a $300 gift is Christmas. Way too much to spend as a just because or for a birthday present. I'm sure the kid will survive the next 9 months.
In case people are interested in a more detailed translation:
TEXT: My little brother (grade 5) made a Nintendo Switch himself as mum wouldn't buy it (He wants to be a game creator in the future)
VIDEO: BB - Big Brother LB - Little Brother
BB (person recording): What game is that?
LB: Splatoon
BB: (Laughs)
LB: ... Two
BB: Ah you said you wanted that one didn't you?
LB: Yeah yeah...
BB: Does the real thing have that holder?
LB: (Points at flap) The real thing doesn't have this. That's all.
BB: Talented.
@PlywoodStick The actual text of the tweet is harmless. The older brother is just mentioning that his 5 year old kid brother made a "switch" and that he wants to be a game creator. My issue is how this is being framed by those that are running with this. If it had just been framed as kid makes a switch out of cardboard that is cool, but going into that fact that his mom won't buy it isn't because the readers are expected to feel sympathy for the kid but we don't know WHY she said no. And quite frankly it doesn't even matter. She said no and that should be the end of the matter, but nope now we are talking about it on the interwebs.
Edit: person above me beat me to it.
Kids today are spoiled. When I was a kid, I may have wanted consoles on launch day but only on one occassion did I ever ask for one when it wasn't my birthday or Christmas - that's when I got my GBASP. All other times I worked for my money if I wanted to be sure to have one on launch day.
@Ryu_Niiyama I think it's pretty funny how people internalize publicized home life happenings on social media. To be honest, I don't think home life is the type of thing that should be posted publicly in any format. But then again, I'm not much for gossiping.
I doubt the older brother thought this would go viral, it's the sort of thing that's happened countless times throughout human history. But I can see how he may have wanted to post something publicly as a reaction to not getting what he wanted. (Which may have been a sort of inappropriate thing to do.). The younger brother probably didn't have anything to do with it. Most kids wouldn't go as far as he did to create a cardboard replica, either, so his intent seems genuinely creative by comparison.
@bloodycelt you shouldn't be able to type.but I see your jealousy this kid has more brains then you.
I have to admire the kid's ingenuity.
Also this thing has nearly as many games as an actual Switch
I remember these kinds of feels. Life gives you cardboard, make a switch out of it. You have the right attitude
That's impressive.
That's pretty cute. Good job, kid!
When I was a kid, I wasn't allowed video games no matter how much I begged and pleaded or how much of my own money I saved up. I had to literally wait for my mom to die before I could get my first GameBoy. Here's hoping that's NOT the solution here.
(It's going to be twenty years next year, please no sympathy.)
I remember I did this sort of thing once with the launch 3DS. Made it out of paper and crayons, I think. It was actually a pretty good representation, if you ask me.
I did get one for my birthday in 2012, so, mission accomplished. This method has proven to bare guaranteed success among millions of children. I've seen it countless times.
@TheLobster
I'm so sorry to hear that. It shouldn't take your mother dying to get a simple electronic game device.
I probably shouldn't say this, but I'm just wondering. Was your family Amish, by chance?
@starcatcher77
How young?
@ProjectCafe LOL. No. My mom just had strong convictions and they were that video games were an incredible waste of money because you had to buy every game separately AND continuously buy batteries for the GameBoy/the regular Nintendos weren't portable. So I played outside a lot and used my imagination, or read books. It didn't kill me.
@TheLobster
Oh.
That, makes a lot more sense.
When the natives at Papau New Guinea saw Europeans in a plane for the first time, they thought Gods has arrived. When the Europeans left, these natives built wooden model of airplane and worshipped them.
And so, this is how humans behave... can't have what you want? Then build an effigy and use your imaginations.
Meh. I want one too, but I'll have to get a job during the Summer to get one
Wow that's a bloody impressive cardboard switch! Great work kid!
Nice.
Reminds me of the time I saved up all my money and bought a Nintendo Gamecube and Smash Bros, my mother took away Smash until Christmas she said, even though I bought the system and game with my own money. So I sat there, day after day just turning the Gamecube on listening and watching the start up screen for a couple months until christmas....
The kid's mom could've denied it for any number of reasons. Could be financial, could be that the kid was in trouble - both of which were mentioned here multiple times.
One possible reason that I haven't seen on here is that maybe the kid's birthday was coming up and his mom didn't want him ruining a surprise.
I hope this kid shows his mom the internet attention this is getting.
@ProjectCafe Pretttty young. I have just entered my teens.
i had to build a girlfriend out of cardboard so i totally understand.
@djtwenty9
Your mother was evil.
@starcatcher77
Well, I'm halfway through mine.
It gives me joy to see more youngsters around here. All the people here are always acting like intensely pessimistic grumpy old farts, which scares all the kids away.
I've been here since '13, so I got encrusted with that stuff.
...
@ProjectCafe Haha! Agreed!
@bloodycelt ...You're nuts.
So sad!ππππππ
@ogo79 I did that toπ
