Another day, another big review embargo. It's the season of massive video game releases, with first-party titans like God of War (which is pretty good, apparently), Bayonetta 3 (which we liked quite a lot), and the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet battling out with third-party giants like Modern Warfare 2 and, today, a certain blue hedgehog. Microsoft, quite wisely, has chosen to avoid the kerfuffle by not releasing any first-party games at all. This year. We joke, Xbox friends — we love you! Now back to Game Pass with you...
Ahem, where were we? Ah yes, Sonic. You're probably wondering where our Sonic Frontiers review is, especially as some players have got their hands on physical copies early. You may even have seen people streaming the game. Unfortunately, we weren't among the lucky ones with a physical version dropping early through our letterbox.
In fact, at the time of writing, the NL editorial team isn't yet in possession of Switch review code, which, as you'll appreciate, is quite the impediment when it comes to reviewing the game. When review code does arrive, it's naturally going to take some time to get through Frontiers and write up a full evaluation. Rest assured that we'll have our verdict with you just as fast as we can.
As you may have seen just last week, these scenarios are becoming increasingly common, unfortunately. We do our best to have reviews live in a timely fashion but — even in cases when pre-launch code is forthcoming — we won't compromise our team's well-being or editorial standards in order to rush an article out the door.
Thanks for your understanding.

No worries mate! I'm not getting it anyway. Take your time.
I appreciate this website's reviewing integrity, and not trying to rush to fit a deadline. Take your time with the review, I'm sure it will be great.
A battered, wounded and beleaguered people gather on their last ounce of strength to see if the new Sonic will be an above average game.
No review was going to change my mind anyway, and the bugs should get patched by then, and you can hopefully get the best experience when you the review the game!
Also happy to hear push square gave it an 8! I’m so hyped!
Push Square review is up and they gave it an 8 which is great news. Hopefully Switch performance can handle what this game throws at it and it reviews similarly.
all this sonic on a nintendo website... me in 1994 is disgusted.
in all seriousness tho the first sonic game was v. good. not played any since but if the quality has been maintained since then this is gonna be a banger.
non binary up get it done. add in fact rest reviews are brown at best how much did sega pay
If reviews are emerging for the PS5 version, but not for the Switch version, and you're reporting that Push Square as a review ready but Nintendo Life doesn't, that's telling me that SEGA has deliberately withheld Nintendo Switch release copies because they aren't confident in that version and don't want negative reviews making an impression based on probable performance issues.
The game is out tomorrow so wasn't really expecting one yet. Damn people, get a grip, patience please.
Team Sonic is so confident in the switch version, they haven't given a review code for the Switch version. I think I know how this story goes.
That’s a shame, I’ll be curious to see how you guys review it. That being said, I already preordered my copy lol. Gotta go fast, after all!
Take your time guys no need to rush im not in hurry to get this one it hasn't really grabbed me like other Sonic games. Will probably wait for sale its not worth 50 bucks to me.
I'm guessing Sega didn't send out any Switch review codes to anyone? I can wait tbh. I think I'll probably wait to the holidays or beginning of the year to grab the game.
No Switch review code yet gives the impression the Switch version has big performance issues.
@blockfight 8? Thats all I have wanted to hear.
@crazykcarter Rocket Knight is the best.
@Grumblevolcano @RupeeClock Weirdly, I remember them doing the same thing at the launch of Team Sonic Racing, but it runs great on Switch! There's one one switch review for Frontiers on Metacritic so far, which gave it a 9.
No worries. Push Square like it Eurogamer don't, in fact they called it a mess of a reinvention lol but that does not bother me in the slightest. I will play the game for myself and decide that way what I think of it.
That's okay. I will be on the look out for it when it finally comes out but one question I have is does anybody know if we can play as Tails, Knuckles and Amy in this game? I would love to be able to play as Tails in an open world type of game like this with his flying ability.
I'm going to pick it up. I am not a fan of the Boost games even a little, but maybe the ebb and flow of open world mixed with the Cyberspace/Boost areas would work? We shall see. I hear people saying that this is a good template, and I WOULD agree...but we all know Sonic Team will rush the next one out anyway, so I'm not quite sure about that. If this is the way Sonic is going, I have a feeling the jank template will be more interesting than what is coming.
@Snatcher And IGN gave it a 7 so all in all it's looking decent.
I saw the final boss and ending on youtube, i thought it was decent, i could of come up with something better of course, I give the game a 6 out of 10
"we won't compromise our team's well-being or editorial standards in order to rush an article out the door."
no one is gonna judge you for downloading and installing that .nsp 😜
You could do the review in the same way as games released these days: start the review, leave it inconclusive and eventually finish it with updates and DLC.
This is obviously a joke. Don't take it seriously
@blockfight And giving how ign has forces with a higher score compared to unleashed, that’s a good thing, then again they were the first batch of people defending the game when the not so good lookin gameplay dropped.
With the reviews I see so far, an average 7/10 is what the game feels like now unless more positive/negative reviews happen. Also this screenshot is what some people call weird.
A cartoon hedgehog and cartoon fat cat hanging out with a realistic crocodile. Cartoon Vector would be jealous.
@LikelySatan I think it’s sega doing the rushing not sonic team, they sound like they want it to be good, even delayed it, why would they rush it? Unless sega which has been said by a few devs who worked there to have rushed there projects.
@Debbiee judging by gameplay and trailers no just be playing as Sonic saving his friends from Sage. I could be wrong guess wait until tomorrow
@Debbiee You'll have to wait for the next game for that.
@Serpenterror It's giving me similar vibes to the AVGN's quote from his review on Sonic 06:
"It's designed to look like a real-life dog yet it's sitting next to a giant cartoon hedgehog. What kinda world does this game exist in?!"
And speaking of weirdness, who hangs out with a real-life crocodile anyway?
All this does is make me think that Sega is deliberately holding back Switch review codes because they're not confident in it's performance.........
@dartmonkey Have you considered having a reviews in progress tracker page? Sites like Special Reserve Games have pages showing production status for games they are selling.
https://specialreservegames.com/production-status/
You could include the ability for readers to nominate games for review and if x number of votes are received then one of the team will pick it up etc.
@RupeeClock Don't be so sure. Codes for other platforms are yet to be distributed as well. Sure, some people have received a code for PS/Xbox, but plenty of others haven't. Depends where you get your codes from. Not necessarily anything to do with Sega being evil and witholding anything.
Missed opportunity to put a "please understand" under the article.
But without joking, it's perfectly fine. It can't be helped. I'll look forward to the review regardless! Personally I'm not in a rush to get this game anyway.
Problem is, I'm getting the game ASAP, so a NLife review at this point is too late.
Having to stick with the rules can sometimes suck.
@MarioBrickLayer That's an interesting idea, although publishers sometimes stipulate that you can't indicate you have review code in the first place, which would make any reviews-in-progress list incomplete.
We have asked for 'Reviews We Missed' nominations in the past, perhaps that could return in some form during a quieter period!
@RupeeClock it leaked out there, so we can see footage of the Switch version. It seems Sega only sent review codes for the ps5 version for the most part for some reason.
@Snatcher I am sure you are right.
Maybe Sega doesn’t trust you guys to deliver a descent review.
Looks like it's trending around 7/10, which is about what I was predicting. I have too many other games I want to get through first to worry about picking it up now, but maybe sometime down the line. If anything, maybe sonic team is finally heading in a good, or at least better, direction. (which given some of their history, shouldn't be too hard)
I have my fingers crossed for this game. I really do. Hoping for a glorious turnaround from that initial reveal.
@Serpenterror is this real? The crocodile looks so realistic it looks like it was photoshopped into the picture.
Someone, please, get that wild animal a pair of white gloves and running shoes
I forgot this game came out tomorrow. Hope it is good
@HammerKirby
Maybe they wanted to save on expenses, and put their best foot forward.
So, it might less sinister than I was first impressed.
It doesn't change that I've pre-ordered the Switch version because after the leaks, I sincerely want to play it now, and the PC version is out of the question due to Denuvo.
Don't bother, plenty of other games that deserve a review.
Switch version framerate https://youtu.be/pdWb-votMZU
@Bobb It's from the Big the Cat fishing mini-game in Sonic Frontiers. At some point in the game perhaps you could reel out an actual crocodile from the pond.
@Anguspuss I think I had a stroke trying to understand your comment.
Other sites have given the Nintendo Switch version a 70, 80, & 90. I don’t think Nintendo Life not getting a code has anything to do with the Switch version being bad. Footage looks good here anyway https://twitter.com/versadile/status/1589346886330322947?s=61&t=jBhXdPTaLPOiwPJZ_Ob6Kg
Despite their words that the Switch version is quality, they only released and show pc footage.
I don't think they are as confident of the Switch Port since they have hidden it.
@Serpenterror To be fair BoTW has a mix of anthropomorphic birds and regular ones.
@Itachi2099 @SwitchplayerJohn Well they haven't given the Xbox versions there codes yet either.
I really respect how this company looks out for their employees' wellbeing. More companies need to do this!
Holding reviews until the games released, not sus at all.
Weird they pay for such things to happen, must be bad signs.
Kinda makes me want to play other Sonic games on the Switch…
@SteamEngenius
Nope, they’re just being weird this time. I’ve been playing for three hours and the switch port is surprisingly good, it also has 3 Metacritic scores: 70, 85, 90. PS4/5 has 50+ review scores, with about 60% of them being good-amazing.
Seems like Sega is being stingy with codes or trying to push people to play the game on other platforms (PS5). I guess that's why only PushSquare got the review code this time.
@Anguspuss do you want try that again, in legible English this time?
Dang didn't get early access? That's rough
