Re: Random: Someone 3D-Scanned The Game Boy That Survived The Gulf War

@blindsquarel Funny thing is that the original model GB can survive being bombed, but lines blocking the screen appear with the slightest drop (though this is fixable, especially since replacement screens exist). Oddly enough, my switch survived being frozen when I accidentally left it in a car in extremely cold weather. It's been over a year since that happened and my switch is still alive and kicking.

Re: Random: The Internet Is Dunking On Space Jam 2's Game Boy Cameo

@DrDaisy I haven't seen the movie, though it looks like the colorized footage in the capture on this page is based on the first game, which doesn't have a color version. Oddly enough, Crazy Castle 3 (which is a backwards compatible game) does have a JP exclusive B/W GB version named Soreyuke!! Kid that has Kid Klown instead of Looney Tunes characters.

Kemco was infamous for making "insert a license" games and the Crazy Castle series was no exception. The NES game was originally a Roger Rabbit game for FDS (not to be confused with the LJN published NES game) and the first two GB games were Mickey Mouse games in Japan (though the Bugs Bunny versions came to Japan in a two in one cartridge). BB Crazy Castle II also had a version with a character named Hugo in some parts of Europe.

Re: Konami Is Bringing GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon To Switch In 2022

Going by what I read online, Momotaro Dentetsu was originally a Hudson game that almost didn't come back because of Konami. If the creator of the series didn't speak up, it probably wouldn't have came back at all.

I'm a bit skeptical since it seems to be going in a bit of a different direction from the original game, but I hope this new Getsu Fuuma Den turns out well. The original game plays similar to the first NES TMNT, but is actually a more polished game, despite being released earlier.

Re: Limited Run Games Is Republishing Two Natsume Game Boy Games This Year

@KingMike I think you mean Amazing Tater, which is actually a localization of Puzzle Boy II. The first game was released as Kwirk. Funny thing is there's a version of Puzzle Boy in a SMT game (SMT III for PS2). There was also a Japan only Devil Children spinoff for GBA that was based of Puzzle Boy. There's also Spud's Adventure, which I assumed was a different game unrelated to the Puzzle Boy series, but I was mistaken (about it being unrelated, at least). Not only was it also done by Atlus, but it seems to have the same characters (as the original JP Puzzle Boy. Kwirk changed the main character to a Tomato).

Re: Bandai Namco Is Bringing Its Retro Collection To The West As Namco Museum Archives

Gaplus (aka Galaga 3) is the one with a new NES-ized version. Galaga already has a NES version. I was surprised by the inclusion of Legacy of the Wizard since it wasn't developed by Namco, only published by them in Japan. I'm glad it's included, though, since it's an excellent game.

Odd that Star Luster and Valkyrie no Bouken aren't included since they barely have any text at all and are mostly in English. Star Luster plays quite a bit like Atari's original Star Raiders on the Atari 800/5200.

Splatterhouse AC is already in the first Namco Museum for Switch. I don't mind the FC game being included since this is a collection of NES/FC games and it's a good game in its own right.

Re: Review: Space Invaders: The Invincible Collection - 40 Years Of History In One Package

brianvgplayer

@KingMike Other versions, including the SNES stand alone cart version, the arcade Space Invaders DX, and the Saturn version also had a similar Vs. mode, though only the PCE CD version has the anime girls.

Edit: The Hucard SI is different from the PCE CD game. The latter is a port of Space Invaders DX like other versions named Space Invaders The Original Game. The former has a different, less accurate port of the original and a full updated version.

I'm not sure about Arkanoid vs. SI being a preorder bonus. It was listed as part of the lineup for the standard edition, despite being a separate download. It came with mine and I find it interesting how it has a full English localization, unlike the collection itself.

Re: The Emulation Experts At M2 Developed The Namcot Collection

Not all of the games are inferior ports and a few like Dragon Spirit are good in their own right. Splatterhouse is what the Parodius series is to Gradius and takes itself less seriously than the original. It's different from the arcade, but still very good. I would also take a NES version of the original Champion Edition over the disappointing Champion Edition 2.

Re: Hori Brings Its Fighting Commander Gamepad To The Switch This June

brianvgplayer

There's some confusion with the top buttons. The switch on the upper side of the controller toggles which buttons function as L and ZL and which function as LSB and RSB. In other words L and ZL can be switched to the left side of the controller. The PS4 Fighting Commander has a similar switch, but instead puts R1 and R2 on on the right when L and ZL are on the left.

Edit: I don't see a turbo button in the picture, but I'm not 100% sure on no turbo since the PS4 version of the controller has it.

The PS4 Hori Fighting Commander also works on switch with the Mayflash Magic-NS or Magic-S Plus adapters, but I'm not sure how they compare to the Brook adapters input lag wise.

Re: Review: Arcade Archives VS. Castlevania - Fixes Some Sins, But The Original Remains Superior

brianvgplayer

"VS. Castlevania was originally released for the Nintendo VS. System of arcade hardware, which for the most part offered tweaked versions of NES games designed to focus more on head-to-head gameplay. We say “for the most part” because VS. Castlevania doesn’t bother with that; despite the name, this is a strictly solo affair."

A good chunk of Vs. games were single player only or alternating 2p like the NES versions. Vs. SMB is only 2P alternating and Vs. Excitebike, despite the name, is also single player only. Most of the Vs. games with 2p modes are also 2p on NES.

Re: Review: SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo - You Can't Polish A Puyo This Plain

brianvgplayer

The ability to turn the puyos counterclockwise is actually in the original game, but unused due to the arcade machine only having one rotate button. The Mega Drive port has the ability to rotate counterclockwise. The arcade runs on beefed up Mega Drive based hardware and the MD port is very similar aside from having less and lesser quality voices.
