There are a lot of big releases this week, but one that stands out on the Nintendo front is Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Sure, it might not be a new release, but it is a slice of Nintendo history - marking the first time the 1990 8-bit Famicom title by Intelligent Systems has ever been released here in the west.
It features 25 chapters, more than 50 playable characters, multiple units and over 20 classes to select from. It also introduces players to Marth (you know, that character you've been fighting or perhaps even playing as in Super Smash Bros. for many years now). As this is such a special retro release, we're curious to know if you'll be adding this latest localisation to your Switch menu later today. So vote in our poll and leave a comment down below.

It's already pre-loaded, looking forward to trying the original Fire Emblem for the first time!
Nah, I'd rather see a more beloved game in the series being translated, tactical RPGs have improved greatly since Shadow Dragon, but it's great for Fire Emblem fans and it's a great step in the right direction. I hope we see more translations like this, or games being adapted for modern consoles like the BS Zelda games or F-Zero AX maybe.
I am interested in the game, and appreciative of the official translation, but Nintendo's recent sales tactics have halted my desire to proceed altogether. (Time-limited digital games? Limited physical production?)
The sale on the newest title in the franchise also tempted me until I saw the amount of DLC on offer. No, thank you - I will wait for a discounted Complete Edition.
Indeed, I do not plan to buy any first-party titles until I understand Nintendo's plans for the next fiscal year (beginning 1 April), when these time-limited titles disappear.
Totally forgot, thanks for the reminder!
Was planning on buying this pretty soon after release anyways
yeah i cannot wait!
Can't wait to play it yeet
@COVIDberry don't worry about the dlc it basically adds a ten hours campaign to a game with 4 different stories totalling like 120 hours of play time all you need is the base game and if you are a huge fan of it and play it that 120 hours (don't worry one run is still satisfying you can stop there haha at like 40 hours) and still want more than you buy the dlc the sales tactic is essentially adding a tiny campaign made to appeal to hardcore fans so just buy the original and ignore it if you wish although I did like the dlc haha. Also it adds more than breath of the wilds dlc and costs the same I'm curious if you dislike that tactic as well
I prefer the DS version, I'll get it at some point on Wii U Virtual Console.
@TrevorMcD something about that 8 bit graphics means I think I prefer it to the ds half path of radiance half fe gba look
Looking forward to the official translation.
Waiting to get the Anniversary Edition. I have every other FE special edition, so I want this too.
If I can't get it, I'll just buy the game by itself off the eShop on March 30th or something.
I've only played the DS version of Shadow Dragon. I'm not sure how much I would enjoy the original. Normally, I'm a sucker for the old 8bit sprite charm but it looked so much better on the DS.
I definitely won't rule this one out, but I would have been much happier with any of the GBA entries.
It’s somehow impressive how this game is completely outdated and Shadow Dragon is completely broken, meaning that it could actually do with a second remake. Genealogy and Thracia are more deserving though, without Marth being in Smash then nobody would really say different.
Yup, pre-ordered and already loaded on my machine. I love 8-bit games and war games, so it's a bit of a no-brainer (I was the poor deprived target audience in 90's America...).
I had the precise conversation from the trailer about "What's Fire Emblem??" when my friend got his new Gamecube and Smash for hi ls 16th birthday, so that trailer made me laugh so hard.
Pre-ordered and pre-loaded. Really looking forward to playing this one (and supporting it to encourage Nintendo to localize other Japan-exclusive games like a certain Game Boy Advance game starring Lucas)
Sorry guys I can’t help but say this: Thanks Nintendo for localizing this game but where’s Mother 3?
Nope, its already on the Famicom Nintendo Switch Online app!
@TrevorMcD I like the DS version more also. I wish they would have brought that one over
Considering that I already played the DS remake of this game I think I'm going to pass.
@nessisonett its a 30 years old game dude
Waiting to see if its a midnight release or not!!!
I already have a pre-order. Not sure if I’ll ever play it all the way through, but I like to support new (official) translations of games from that era.
I’m a Fire Emblem fan but I’ll stick with Three Houses (bought for only $27.99!) for now.
@BlackenedHalo So are Zelda and Super Mario Bros. They’re still brilliant. This hasn’t aged well in the slightest.
Yeah, I've had it pre-ordered the moment it became available.
The release was slightly ill timed considering I just happened to play the fan tranlation earlier this year, but I'll be checking this version too at some point for sure. Love this game and all variations of it.
Already available in the UK, I'm playing it now!
@Don Exactly
I played and enjoyed the Shadow Dragon facelift. I can live without playing the original lol.
I’d buy it quicker if I wasn’t thoroughly enjoying my Gameboy advance. Between you and I, I haven’t turned my switch on in ... 2-3 months? Nothing against the system, just nothing that I felt I HAD to buy. Plus there’s so much to sift through. Anyway, will buy fire emblem but just not right away. Or real soon. This is limited like Mario? That’s the dumbest s*** I d ever heard.
If they ported the 7+6 duology, I would have bought it for sure. This is not nearly as enticing, and I don't want to fan Nintendo's limited releases practices either, so a hard pass.
Definitely. Although I don't know when I'll be getting around to actually playing it.
I hope it sells well. I'd love to see Nintendo translate more of their classic, Japan-only releases.
Should've been part of the NES Online. Nintendo Online needs every selling point possible, and having it being the only 'official' way to play this at this point in time would've helped.
I'll be getting it. Not this second but I will be. I wasn't worried about pre-loading it. It's not like it's gonna be a big download. lol
Though I agree with those saying this should have just been a part of NSO, I'll gladly take getting it this way, as opposed to not at all!
Of course I'm not playing it. I'm playing the higher-quality DS version on my 3DS. Why settle for 8-bit graphics when I can play the superior remake? This Switch release is for people who don't know anything about Fire Emblem.
@TheWingedAvenger
Some of us don't have a DS/3DS lol
I’m tempted. Have got the DS version, so assume this can only feel inferior, but am mildly curious by how much, and my OCD wants it for historical completionism.
Too old game... Ok nostalgia... But Is too limited nowadays
Just downloaded it. Still bummed that we didn't get the game on cartridge (only that stupidly expensive SE with a download code), but the price they asked for the digital version is so low that it's totally worth getting. I had some gold points to spend, so I got it for half the price, which is like... three cans of Coca-Cola here in Sweden.
I am compelled to grab it (Digital, mind, love the collectors edition but I don't do codes in a box). Warsong (Langrisser) on the Megadrive was my first introduction to this genre and loved it. So for me, it's like a what if...
When they announced this I went and purchased Shadow Dragon on the DS second hand instead. The original doesn't really appeal to me much but it does look good for a NES game.
Even though I'm now a definite fan of the series (having recently gone through Fates, Echoes and part of Three Houses) I don't really see much reason to get this release, outside of mild curiosity as to how the series began. To be fair it's not a bad anniversary release, but unlike Super Mario 3D All-Stars, this game doesn't seem to have held up much over the years, making it a much less enticing idea to visit (especially when I have the DS remake on the Wii U VC).
I voted yes but I've already met Marth since this game was remade for the DS and that version was released a second time in the West on the Wii U before this third, inferior version
Definitely getting it. Complete my fire emblem collection. Might not get time to play it but hopefully encourage Nintendo that theres a market for never translated games today.
I hope they do the second ds remake. I've no clue what's going on in my imported copy.
Also I went to like 10 stores to get dsshadow dragon before accidentally finding it in a video store. Gamestop had no clue what fire emblem was. Very different times
I'd have bought it if it wasn't time limited. I'm not supporting that practice. I'll stick to the same translated rom I've been using for 2 decades.
This should have been added to the NSO subscription, but since when do Nintendo give their fans free stuff when they can fleece them for extra profit.
Nope, even though I would probably enjoy it. I refuse to pay extra for what Japanese subscribers get in their service. I have a ton of other games I am not playing to spend money on an 80s game I have no nostalgia for and feel cheated by Nintendo.
At some stage, but not right away. Like I said before, I'm in no rush to play OR own it (with DS Shadow Dragon playthrough behind me and this original's Japanese version already in my "legal" library via NSO), but the option of a $60 dollar collector edition with an artbook is:
1) pretty appealing
2) doesn't go against my digital policy since it's a code (and still makes sense to be "physical" because there are no artbooks on eShop)
3) should remain in circulation after whatever expiry date on Nintendo's side, flea markets or otherwise (unless Ninty pulls an extra prank like disabling all the enclosed codes come April😈😆). Maybe I'll even come to get/trade it at a flea market - I've quite unexpectedly ended up with a physical and even steelbook-equipped copy of Pokemon Sword this week because my new unit's previous owner just gifted me what he didn't know what to do with for the lack of a console... except, for all my gratitude, long owning a digital copy leaves me no wiser in that regard. So perhaps a trade-in might work at some point?
And if push comes to shove, there's still plenty of time before the "deadline" of a pretty inexpensive eShop offering. One way or another, this game will be in my library.
I just finished the first stage a few hours ago (I guess it was playable sooner in EU because of time zones) and I enjoyed it more (so far) then I expected I would. Because all the reviews, saying how brutal difficult and clunky it is, scared me a bit.
Still afraid of the difficulty to go way up. But the clunkiness is something I actually enjoy if I am honest. I have a soft spot for this "non explanation time" in gaming where there was so much guessing and unnecessary work involved from the players part.
My favorite example is the cake shop in Phantasy Star.
And I am not even being nostalgic, because I was not around at that time. Just experiencing it now trough ports.
I am interested, but no way I am paying 6 euros for something that should be in the NES app.
I have already Shadow Dragon on DS so thanks but no thanks!
I have FE awakening and three houses and haven’t touch those (I must finish Ogre Tactics on PSP first) . So... not for me. And I back the statement “this should have been an NSO game and not a 6 dollars one”
If I hadn't played the DS version, I'd be all over this. So I will pass.
@JR150
You should go buy a 2DS XL right now. Ocarina of Time and Dragon Quest VIII aren't going to play themselves, you know.
Just got it and I'm happy with it. It's like an RPG mixed with chess. The weapon/items/progression systems are very deep for a 30 years old 8-bit game. This game seems to be the pioneer of this kind games being published long before Shining Force and Langrisser. It's a groundbreakng achievement and as such it's worth having in the slightly modernized form despite its age and obvious limitations.
I bought it but I'm not quite sure when I will actually play it. I totally forgot that the DS remake is still available on Wii U ehop. Nevermind. I love the series. We need 'em all.
Bought it and played up to half way through chapter 2 during a lunchtime break from work(working from home).
Holds up better than I thought. I think it helps that it's not so difficult that you need to do exact calculations, so the gameplay can be brisk (though I've got the enemy turns sped up 2x).
Also to those playing. Don't underestimate Jagen. He's going to drop off compared to other units, but you can't use every character. Use him while he's good instead of one of the characters you plan on dropping.
@COVIDberry Prepare to wait forever then as Nintendo don't do complete editions unless its a port for the next system. Also there isn't tons of DLC its just one Season Pass and thats it.
I want to get this, but kind of worried about the difficulty. I, unfortunately, don’t have as much time to play games anymore, so I really hate getting stuck for too long. Now when I was younger, bring it on!
Wow, that poll has one of the most evenly split responses I've ever seen for this site!
I may give it a try eventually.
I think I'll get it, not super excited because I already have played Shadow Dragon on the DS, wish they would've given us a game we haven't seen any version of in the West like Mystery of the Emblem or something instead.
My husband is out at EB Games right now picking up my physical limited edition right now! I wonder if the Nintendo Switch Online NES wireless controller will work with this game? That would be really cool if it was!
@TheWingedAvenger
Not interested in either Zelda or Dragon Quest. But I see why people liked the system lol
I expect it to be really outdated, so not really interested unless I'm proven wrong.
If it were a port of Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn I would get it day 1.
I won't be getting it because I'm just not a fan of the game. But there is a part of my brain that's like... 'but that game will be rare one day' so hats off to Nintendo for once again creating artificial scarcity. Still a no from me.
I played the DS remake. It was a bit pants compared to other fire emblem games at the time and a shiny new coat couldn't hide its age completely.
This will be a marmite game for those experiencing it for the first time.
I had the special edition pre order and was ready to pickup this morning at my local game store... when I got there I had to wait an hour to hear the shipment didn’t come in yet ); was pretty upset, but I have dark souls to keep me occupied in the meantime. Hope whoever got it today has fun!
Never played Fire Emblem before. I kinda want to try it but it sounds like this one's a little rough around the edges.
Probably just gonna get the DS remake on VC eventually, after playing some of the more newcomer-oriented entries like Blazing Blade.
I bought it, but it doesn't seem to be using the same emulator as the switch online games. The emulator menu text is distorted, even when the video mode is set to "pixel perfect" (which thankfully isn't true of the in game text). It lacks the nice looking 4:3 mode of the Switch Online emulator.
I preordered it because I love the series but in hindsight, I have my doubts that I'll play it as I've never been a fan of the way NES-era games look. For whatever reason, I thought this was a Super Famicom title when I preordered.
Go ahead and troll me, I know my Nintendo history, I just avoided the NES era because everything always looked so bland and I was a SEGA person way back when.
I already bought it. It is interesting, and I've only played a bit of Path of Radiance, and Warriors. I was fortunate enough to survive the first chapter through a walkthrough. I wonder if it's possible to extract the ROM from the program files, and I further wonder if it's even possible to put it on the NES Classic Edition. Just curious.
I'm going to swing down to Nintendo NY to pick it up tomorrow morning. They told me on the phone just before closing (no time to get it today) that they had plenty of stock still.
Meanwhile, all the Best Buy & Game Stop copies were bought up by scalpers the moment preorders went live. Amazon and ebay have it - from scalpers - for 2.5x the price.
Yes. I have already played Shadow Dragon but I will download this as a curio.
Where's the poll option for "I already own the DS remake"?
I'm not buying it because of two reasons:
1. I'm already paying for NSO. It should have been free through that service. How much work can it really be to translate a game?
2. I just don't care enough. I'd rather play a modern srpg like Three Houses or XCom 2, Wargroove or Disgaea. It's just not for me.
Just play the DS remake Fire Emblem:Shadow Dragon. A vastly superior and modernized games. Stop supporting these "Nintendo Vault" releases.
Prepare to wait forever then as Nintendo don't do complete editions unless its a port for the next system.
@WallyWest I am a fan of F-Zero and Metroid. I know what it is to wait. I suppose all patience is finite, but I don't feel hurried here. Perhaps I shouldn't be saying this to the Flash...
