I think asking people to buy extra hardware after already forking out for a more expensive Switch AND being subscribed to the most expensive reoccurring subscription is a bit much. I like that they made this replica, but making it mandatory to play the extremely limited VB library that will never get new content is taking things too far.
Wanted to buy this but can’t justify it after SEGA’s illegal raid and theft (actual theft) of that video game archivist’s property. (See story on TimeExtension)
I really like the Jsaux JoyVerse grips and charging frame. It doesn’t have the cool dock feature of this one, but the grips themselves are very comfortable to use. They had some rubber joystick tops too that I like the shape of, though the quality is a little low.
What I wish for is someone to make a version of the magnetic rail that came with the Switch 2 JoyCons which cover the optical sensor. I haven’t seen anyone make such a thing yet and the optical sensor keeps triggering the mouse mode when I don’t want it to while I’m holding them.
This is like the patent version of a SLAPP. They know they shouldn’t be doing this but are desperate to do anything to punish what they perceive to be a slight against them.
I would like to add for all the focus on being able to wake the Switch 2 or not, that this controller can’t wake the Steamdeck either (which is what I bought mine to play on).
Credit to Ubisoft if they deserve it, but calling this the “the most impressive Switch 2 port yet” only 6 months into the console’s life is a little much, don’t you think?
First off, I don’t consider ‘Switch 2 Edition’ versions of Switch 1 games or Switch 2 upgrades of Switch 1 games to be part of the Switch 2 library any more than I consider Switch 1 games without S2 versions or upgrades to be part of the S2 library. For it to be part of the Switch 2 library for the sake of rating it, it can’t have a Switch 1 release.
Secondly, for those games with Switch 2 editions that include extra exclusive content (such as Jamboree TV, or the bonus content of Kirby), I can only consider that content in isolation.
Finally, while I do consider Game Key Cards to be part of the Switch 2 library, I am opposed to them on a fundamental level, so I must rate them negatively against my opinion of the Switch 2 library.
So in summary, I’d rate the Switch 2 library as just okay and about where I’d figure it would be at this point in time. Thankfully, the Switch 2 does have access to a huge library of Switch 1 games to help tide things over between huge new releases.
They may have a legitimate need to have the full game on disk, but if I buy a game key card now I’ll just be signaling to publishers that I’m okay with them, which I’m not.
@Whyarewestillhere For this one in particular it probably did, because they never saved or archived the source code, so this had to be created from mostly scratch.
@Jade37 Agree. The fact that this isn’t the Definitive version of the game, and the possibility of it being a game key card, turns me off to supporting it. Then they go and throw strong-arm coercion tactics into it which makes me want to support it even less. If it DOES do well, it just opens up the possibility of them releasing a definitive version years later and getting people to buy it again. This whole thing leaves a metaphorical bad taste in my mouth.
@Metazoxan I can understand that sentiment to an extent, but I also don’t want a company that is led by someone like the current Square Enix CEO, who continuously makes poor decisions and is causing the company to flounder financially, basically begging fans to support his bad leadership under threat of losing potential games they may want, rather than correcting the problems internally.
Edit: I was thinking of the previous Square-Enix CEO when I made this comment, though the situation hasn’t exactly improved under the current CEO.
You know, I get their point, but something feels really bad about an AAA publisher like Square-Enix (or Capcom, since they’ve done this too) basically blackmail fans into supporting them if they want to see more games released. I really don’t like being told “if you want to see more of things you love, you need to buy the things you don’t.” Not that I’m implying there isn’t a reason for this to exist, or that it’s bad, or that people don’t actually want this.
I’m usually wrong about these sorts of things, but this strikes me as a dumb idea. You’re going to fragment the ecosystem into two hardware tiers and then developers are either going to support both by targeting the lower power tier and upscaling, or not support the lower power tier at all. We’re already seeing massive issues with unoptimized games trying to hit the cuttingest-edge graphics while letting performance suffer. Now you’re going to throw a lower performance model into the mix?
Sure it worked for the PS4 Pro and PS5 Pro, kinda… But those released midway through the console life (or maybe even extended the console’s life) after the base model had time to flourish. Maybe ask developers how they feel about the Xbox Series S and X?
I dunno… it just seems like you’re burdening developers unnecessarily.
Wow who would have thought a video game designed from the ground up to be enjoyable, that the developers actually want to play, that respects the player’s time, that isn’t designed by a committee, and doesn’t constantly badger you to spend more money would do well?
I liken these ports+plus releases to the days when we’d get stuff like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Did you feel like paying full price again for the same game with a small content update and tighter/faster gameplay? Well has Nintendo got a deal for you!
They’re not unwelcome when they release as definitive editions that include all of the DLC and patches/improvements released after the original game’s launch, but when they’re designed for, and tacked on to the original just for the sake of making it look more appetizing to buy again, those I don’t care for.
They still make finely polished* games that can be enjoyed by players of all ages.
But it’s not like they’ve got their finger on the pulse of gaming. They make plenty of dumb mistakes as well and can be quite tone deaf or even hostile towards their consumers as well.
But here’s the big difference: Nintendo makes games that they themselves would want to, and do play. You ask the CEO of EA, Microsoft, Former Activision CEO, Ubisoft, and other such publishers if they play video games and once you filter all the marketing fluff out, they’ll tell you no.
I applaud the idea and cheer for differently abled representation, but the game itself doesn’t look finished from everything I’ve seen. It looks more like a tech demo than a fully featured game, which kills any kind of excitement for me.
Not sure I’d call it a ripoff from the screenshots alone. It has generic asset store survival elements and that weird ai looking art style, but aside from the name it doesn’t really bare any resemblance to either Pokemon or Palworld. It’s about as much a ripoff as Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, or Digimon.
Nintendo has always been a company that wants you to enjoy their stuff in exactly the way they intend and absolutely no other ways are allowed. They probably have some draconian Japanese business reason why they don’t want to release certain music tracks at the height of their popularity. Probably something like it diminishes the experience of the game or some such nonsense. Who actually knows.
@IronMan30 They are informing potential customers of a divisive and potentially unwanted condition so that said potential customer can make an informed decision.
Count me as one of those disappointed by the lack of the C and Z buttons on the front. Although I guess it doesn’t really matter since the appeal of adding those two buttons is extremely niche, and I don’t know that I would buy this even if they were included. Oh well. I’m glad more people have more options in any case. That’s always a plus. I’m actually really happy we’re in an era where there are so many dang good 3rd party controllers. While there are still the MadCatzes out there, there are so many GOOD choices too.
DK Bananza, much like Mario Odyssey before it, reminds me of what video games should be like when the player’s fun is put first and foremost and expertly polished to, if not perfection, near perfection. I don’t have to worry about missing out on a limited time event. I don’t have to worry about daily logins. I don’t have to worry about spending more money to unlock things. There are no super complicated combos or spreadsheets you have to remember, no novel-style story you’ll forget if you take a break, no hour long cutscenes that interrupt your fun. There’s no gacha, no loot boxes, no collectors editions, no battle passes, no psychologists carefully calculating how to milk every spare cent out of players. It’s just a video game that genuinely respects the player, which you can plug in, start up, and begin mindlessly bashing and collecting things immediately. I had practically forgotten what that was like. We need more video games like this.
