@BanjoPickles Haha, that's great news! I had something similar happen with the Switch, getting a preorder in with Best Buy in the middle of the night when it went on sale. Lucky us, I guess
Now I'll just have to be content with my earlier luck, since it doesn't seem like I'll be able to pick up an SNES Classic, womp womp.
@Gamer401 I'm pretty disappointed about this. What was the point of registering to be notified about pre-orders if they were just going to put it up without notice anyway. Ugh.
Wow, too cool! These were fairly cutting edge games at the time, and I'm not aware of any significant re-release efforts in the intervening years. Glad to see them make an appearance on Nintendo hardware too.
Glad to hear that the devs are taking their time (and I feel the same about Yooka-Laylee Switch). It's nice when we can have things release at the same time as other platforms, but it stands to reason that, given the radically different console infrastructure, that some serious adaptation work needs to occur. For some games (most recently Overcooked), ports without careful consideration and lengthy playtesting leads to poor results.
Great to see this - I'd imagine that this kind of kind is a load of fun on strong portable hardware, as I found playing Hyrule Warriors Legends on my New 3DS even more enjoyable than its cousin on the Wii U. I'll certainly consider picking this game up at some point.
Very excited! I'm actually going to go get some ice cream tomorrow before the Splatfest with my wife and dogs, just to get in the right state of mind for Team Ice Cream
Oh neat, I hadn't paid any attention to this, but it's exactly my type of game. Love little puzzlers on my 3DS (Stretchmo), so this'll be a nice addition to my Switch library next week.
Ohhhh, this is excellent! Another game that would benefit is Tokyo Mirage Sessions, particularly if you could switch (click) between the usual TV and gamepad displays.
@UmbreonsPapa Agreed on Urbosa - the Gerudo and Zora sections certainly had the most compelling present-day framing devices, and the Gerudo memories were among the best.
I was originally a touch disappointed, since I had (perhaps unrealistic) hopes for playing as Zelda in the past, but upon reflection this does offer some very cool opportunities. I know many of us were hoping to see the rebuilding effort that occurs after Ganon's defeat, so that remains a possibility with this post-story campaign. Additionally, the focus on the Champions does offer the potential for greater development of them or, ideally for me, their descendants in the present.
I'm a bit disappointed, since I've heard that this mode is one of the more engaging features in the sequel. Seems like another unfortunate instance of Nintendo's enforcement of artificial scarcity, but it's not a big deal - just disappointing.
This may be a silly question, but I thought Nintendo games usually got published on Fridays, while 3rd Party studios normally published on Tuesdays. Is there a reason that July 6 is a big publication date this week?
I'm so glad that this was documented - Breath of the Wild is perhaps the least glitchy open-world game ever created, and that polish is one of its strongest elements, but it's still always nice to see the edges of what was created. I have no doubt that this will get patched out, so it's nice to have a static record of the beautiful void existing just beyond Hyrule
Weirdly, the most welcome change for me may be that gems are now available in all VS modes. This game's best portion is VS combat, and now I can play that during downtime against AI foes to improve and get gems at the same time. "Thanks Konami!"
Hahaha, I just love this character, and all the more after reading this delightfully (characteristically) bizarre Nintendo designer article. The noises he makes in Hyrule Warriors are so unsettling too! Really gotta find a copy of Rosy Rupeeland some day.
@GoneFishin Good call - it was a poor choice of words on my part. What I meant to say was that I thought Nintendo lacked ownership of the design, so to speak.
Huh, this is fairly baffling. The lack of trademark ownership was the most elegant answer for why Nintendo never re-released SuperFX games. One wonders why they wouldn't do so otherwise.
These tidbits continue to be fascinating. Seeing the in-development stills for Midna's emotions, finding out that an unreleased game featuring a Midna-like character was in development prior to Twilight Princess, and discovering that Tetra's model was the original prototype for a character riding Wolf Link are all fun new information, and I don't think they even appeared in the lovely Hyrule Historia! Thanks for directing more views to this cool feature.
@NEStalgia To be fair, if those links are posted here and used by readers of the site, the site might see a slight profit from it - we all benefit from that, as it keeps these fine writers doing the great work they do
I can't recommend this highly enough! Snake Pass is one of my favorite games from this year so far, and well worth the full asking price if you're interested in innovative platformers full of personality.
I'm rather excited for this! I didn't have an SNES as a child, and always wanted one, so it'll be cool to get the handful of games I've repeatedly played over the following years - Super Mario World, Final Fantasy III - while also getting to enjoy so many games I missed - Yoshi's Island, Earthbound, Kirby Super Star, Super Mario RPG, and Starfox. Hopefully I can get my hands on the system!
As far as wishlist stuff goes, I'd swap Super Punch Out and Street Fighter for Chrono Trigger and Super Mario All-Stars. It would, of course, also be nice to have later games in the Donkey Kong and/or Mega Man series, but I'll be content with what we're getting.
As a person who runs a website elsewhere dedicated to offering a fan's take on an artist's work, I think it would be reasonable for that artist to request that my site shut down; I'd comply immediately, of course. It's nice when the owners of intellectual property allow fans to offer up new content adapted from their creations, but particularly in instances where the original creator is planning to make use of that IP in the near future, it stands to reason that they'd have a stake in clamping down a bit. Anyway, I don't have hard feelings towards Nintendo on the AM2R thing, though I understand folks being disappointed.
@bezerker99 Agreed. I think there will always be some games left off of this sort of thing (at times inexplicably, since they take up so little space), but I'm happy with what we're getting. In particular, I've never played Super Mario RPG or Yoshi's Island, so those are pretty exciting!
Ah crap, I'll definitely (be trying to) buy this. Though I'm really hoping they add Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars to it - I know SMW gets released for everything, but it's about the only game that I'll buy on everything. I never had an SNES as a child, so this'll be a really cool treat.
Argh, I want this on Switch so badly. I enjoy it on the computer, but its tech requirements aren't high and it would foster the same kind of community atmosphere that the Switch has been going for. I wonder if there could be some UI hurdles, of course, since you have less screen real estate and FFXIV presents way too much info onscreen without modification.
I think I must be one of the only people who has never played this game! Consequently, I've placed an order with Best Buy. I hadn't planned to get the physical version, but it's $7 cheaper for me, so it's pretty much a no-brainer. Hope it lives up to the reputation
This is one of the titles I've been most looking forward to in 2017, which is really saying something considering the others being published this year! The demo only got me more excited, so I'm eagerly anticipating this Friday.
This looks amazing! I haven't played Skyrim since the original release on Xbox 360, and am excited to dive back in for the exclusive content and expanded world. Hadn't been pumped about this one until now.
Glad to hear that this game stuck the landing. I have my copy pre-ordered, as I could tell from the Testpunch that I'll be playing it with friends/online over the next few years, much like I have with Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. I'm really impressed that Nintendo has finally managed to convert me to someone who enjoys motion controls when they're applied well, as I hated them pretty passionately in the Wii era.
@GoldenGamer88 That makes sense - I misunderstood your original comment. Scizor is pretty compelling for me too! Unfortunately, the only Pokemon from this game that I'm especially excited about are Scizor, Pikachu Libre, Suicune, and Chandelure; I really do favor the odd/cute Pokemon, so Pokken doesn't quite scratch that itch for me.
@Nintendoer While I agree that much of the complaining is a bit much, I don't think it's reasonable to argue that Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon fulfill the same role as the rumored Pokemon Stars would have: people were excited for Stars because it was said to be HD, and would have appeared on an alternative console. Now folks who own a Switch but not a 3DS remain unable to play the game. I can understand that disappointment, even if it's not a big deal.
@GoldenGamer88 Is there a reason that you'd buy this day-one despite not enjoying the Wii U original? I don't thing anything was changed aside from the addition of a few fighters. Well, the fact that it's portable and playable with a single joycon is pretty cool, actually. I didn't pick up the original, and don't imagine I'll buy this one either.
I was disappointed because it fell short of what I hoped (Pokemon Stars for Switch, of course). That said, it's hard to imagine blaming the rumors or online publications for that - nobody got hurt, and it was fun to speculate, even if that ended up being incorrect.
@Faruko I think it was reasonable to hope for a Pokemon Stars announcement, but I suspect your analysis is correct. Switch is having such a blowout first year, and heaven knows the console sales are great, so it would be a shrewder business move to hold off. Shame for us fans at the moment, but it's not like there aren't already enough Switch games sucking away my hard-earned cash, haha.
Quite disappointing for me, but not a bad release overall. I caught all the available Pokemon on Sun last year, and was really hoping for a Switch deluxe edition of the game, so I won't be picking this up. If I hadn't already invested 100 hours into this generation of games on the 3DS, though, I'd be excited.
Wow, this looks really cool! I'm happy that the cool critical reception to I Am Setsuna didn't dissuade SE from seeking to publish more Tokyo RPG Factory games, as this one looks like an improvement. The visual style is lovely, and it's nice that the studio is developing a distinct look rather than dramatically departing from the appearance of its previous game. The music, unsurprisingly, is gorgeous, and the cityscapes in particular stood out as an inspired setting.
I've really enjoyed my time with the game. It's an excellent complement to the more action-heavy, tactically light games in the Switch library so far, and perhaps even moreso once the next set of action-oriented games get published - ARMS and Spla2n. I'd disagree with the knock on the visuals, which I find to consist of excellent spritework, but I can understand that someone who prefers polygonal visuals over pixel-based visuals would not enjoy them.
This looks deliriously awful in the best possible way. Looking forward to hearing more, as the little bit of information here makes me interested in the same way that the bizarre Pocket Card Jockey did.
I'm a touch suspicious of the promo material, since it doesn't seem like Nintendo would promote its Princess Peach character as "badass" and there appears to be a typo - "turtle shelves" rather than the presumably intended "turtle shells." Of course, Nintendo could be offering a radically different approach to its promos, and typos in official content are nothing new.
I'm planning on primarily playing with the Joycon motion controllers, but I'm genuinely impressed that so much customization is available - anybody can play this game! Much like the touch screen controls in Puyo Puyo Tetris, it really is a joy to see this level of control on a console game.
It's OK to complain about these things, but every consumer has the power to vote with his or her dollar. Would I like having 1-2-Switch to play with friends at parties? Sure, but I will absolutely not buy it at that price. Would a Pro Controller be great? Yes, but that's too much money for what I'd be getting (don't get me wrong, I think the competitor controllers are too pricey too). Is a charging grip a cool idea? Yup, but I'd rather plan to not use Joycons for more than twenty hours straight instead of spending $30 on an accessory to avoid it.
As this article makes abundantly clear early on, game enthusiasts are generally unwilling to exercise their rights in the market and just not buy something that has been either overpriced or under-tested. They enable this behavior from content creators by pre-ordering and buying but complaining afterwards rather than reviewing the information available to them and spending accordingly; this isn't to say that people shouldn't buy a dock for $90, but rather that a reasonable person should decide whether the convenience is worth that price and buy happily rather than begrudgingly.
The one exception, in my opinion, is a dual-pack of Joycons. $80 for what are, effectively, two controllers with a wide variety of applications, seems like a decent price. I think the Switch console is well-priced, but the accessories are laughably expensive. Looking forward to a reduction at some point in the years ahead, and if none is coming, I'll accept not having certain accessories.
@DizziParadise It's hard to imagine getting around this issue with the market and Nintendo's internal direction being what they are. If they want to compete for the same money as Sony and Microsoft, they need a console with similar hardware and an architecture similar enough that porting games doesn't require significant effort on the part of publishers. I think third parties avoiding the porting of games to Switch at the moment is reasonable, given the fact that they will need to make them less visually appealing and more costly to reflect the smaller install base. Charging more for Switch games, given that developing for Xbone/PS4 effectively nets you sales on two devices with little modification, isn't something I see as unreasonable by companies concerned about their bottom line.
That said, I am hoping that indies continue to focus on the Switch, and that major third parties offer unique games that take advantage of the Switch's hardware. It is largely competing for an alternative market to the other giants in the industry, and I think that's what has cemented Nintendo's consistent place in so many fans' households (mine included).
I'll be picking up Disgaea 5 and ARMS. Both look excellent, though of course they're radically different games. I haven't completed a Disgaea game in years, and it seems like the type of game to shine in portable mode. ARMS is very exciting, and I love everything that I've seen so far. Not placing any pre-orders - why bother? - but I will buy both of these upon release.

It is largely competing for an alternative market to the other giants in the industry, and I think that's what has cemented Nintendo's consistent place in so many fans' households (mine included).
Re: Deals: Nintendo Switch - Upcoming Goodies For May And June
I'll be picking up Disgaea 5 and ARMS. Both look excellent, though of course they're radically different games. I haven't completed a Disgaea game in years, and it seems like the type of game to shine in portable mode. ARMS is very exciting, and I love everything that I've seen so far. Not placing any pre-orders - why bother? - but I will buy both of these upon release.
