Square Enix Collective has revealed that the 2000 PlayStation title Fear Effect is being remastered for Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One next year.
French studio Sushee - which is also responsible for the forthcoming Fear Effect Sedna - is handling development duties in conjunction with Polish publisher Forever Entertainment.
Benjamin Anseaume, founder of Sushee, had this to say about the annoucement of Fear Effect Reinvented:
As support for Fear Effect Sedna quickly built up steam, we realised how much love Fear Effect as a franchise still had amongst gamers. At the same time, we realised that as well as offering established fans something new with Sedna, it would be great to introduce fresh players to Fear Effect by remaking that first great adventure. Fear Effect Reinvented will capture the same spirit and atmosphere as the original game, but it’ll bring it into the present with drastically improved visuals, tweaked controls and other exciting extras.
Fear not, however. Those original fixed camera angles will remain in place, albeit playing host to some brand new high-definition visuals.
Were you a fan of the original Fear Effect? Did you back Fear Effect Sedna on Kickstarter? Are you looking forward to playing this remake on Switch? Leave a comment to tell us.

Meh! Did not like at the time and still not my thing.
Love both the fear effect games on the ps1. Looking forward to this. 😎
The visual design was way ahead of its time when it first came out. It looked like Wind Waker but came out in 1999.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this!
For the switch, hell yes.
Short trailer.

Tweaked controls and exciting extras? What about titillating gameplay
This is a suprise. I might check this out if the controls are improved. They always sucked in the PlayStation version.
Never thought I'd see this today lol.
Hopefully they will also improve the buttons or zipper on the protagonist's top, as it appears that system was highly prone to failure in the original game.
Oh boy. More fanservice. Here's another game very few will buy. Disappointed...
Never even heard of this franchise 'til now....
What a game ! so excited
Amazingly enough, anime games start being politically interesting in the west twenty years later.
Here are two strong, body-positive female leads, that even have a bit of a relationship going on with each other.
But let's leave it to the internet to spin that into something negative.
Never heard of it before. Will have to see more, that tailer shows practically nothing. Hopefully, it's a good game.
@Pod B-b-but it's disgusting weeb trash. How could it be anything but negative? Think of the children!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's a espionnage thriller that plays like a classic Resident Evil. It made a few waves in its time because the two main protagonists were very heavily implied to be together (and there was much fanservice)
I was too young to play it, but the few walkthroughs I read made the game enticing (yes, I did that when I couldn't play a game)
I'd love to see the Gex trilogy on the Nintendo Switch!
cant wait till this gets delayed on switch!
Heads up Nintendolife, your image is from Fear Effect 2.
I hoped something like this might happen when I backed Fear Effect Sedna on Kickstarter.
Day one !!!!!!!!! Was one of the best games ever played!!!!
@JaguarWog "Tits up NintendoLife" would be more apt.
Is the upfront cleavage an integral part of the gameplay?
This was one of those games I saw in PlayStation magazine and wanted to play but never got the chance, so it's good news for me. I'd love to see Parasite Eve remastered for Switch too.
Does Switch also get Sedna?
What kind of game is it anyway? Still it published by square so that always gets my interest.
Considering how expensive this game and especially Retro Helix are to acquire now, I really endorse this! Good on Squenix for not just publishing Sedna and calling it a day, and I hope Retro Helix follows suit.
♫ "Ports, ports, ports,
I'm looking for a good time..." ♫
@Arnold-Kage it's resident evil one from a gameplay perspective.
@sabrewing just looked on ebay you can pick them up for about a tenner each? Still got my original copies after seeing your comment thought I might be sitting on a goldmine lol.
Holy crap, I remember these games. I never thought I would see this almost 20 years later. A lot of the NL readerbase (and staff) were probably too young when this first came out but it did cause quite a chatter. I remember them being really cool.
Was a huge fan of both FE games and had no idea there was a kickstarter for a new game!
Now this was unexpected!
"Fear not, however. Those original fixed camera angles will remain in place"
I'm not sure if that's a good thing..
The fixed angles and tank controls where compromises they had to make back in the day. I'm not too keen on holding on to obsolete gameplay mechanics just for the sake of being preservation.
@Julien if I remember correctly her boobs do play a part in the story. Lol, think she flashed some guards or something in one part of the story. It's been forever since I've played this game
Wow, had a lot of fun with the original back in the day. If I remember correctly, the sequel didn't sell very well because the PS2 came out around the same time. This game really pushed the ps1 to it's limits
I must've skipped over this back in the 90s. After looking at gameplay, I would need some new controls. Those dated shooting mechanics look like they would only bring headaches, but maybe I'm biased. I wasn't a fan of them even during the 90s.
Played through them again a few years ago, not bad, not great.
@amishpyrate Thanks for keeping me abreast of things!
Great game played it on the psx, one of the hidden gems on psx. But id rather have square enix remaster games like vagrant story or bushido blade or parasite eve!!!
Wow, too cool! These were fairly cutting edge games at the time, and I'm not aware of any significant re-release efforts in the intervening years. Glad to see them make an appearance on Nintendo hardware too.
I would have preferred a double pack with FE 1 and 2 so we can have all three on Switch.
I am so happy this is Switch bound!
Oh my god what a great news. I hope this does really well so we can see a Parasite Eve Rewhatever in the future.
Gamerankings: Fear Effect (PlayStation) 84.89% (31 reviews).
I will vote with my wallet for this. Now, bring Vagrant Story and Parasite Eve HD to Switch, you monsters.
Oh yeah! I loved the first one! Please don't mess it up devs! The art of the original was fantastic!
It was a cool game, might check it out once it release.
I don't care if the game is good or not, never heard of it (although looks promising, will keep it in my radar). All I care is that this is an announcement for a game from a AAA third party in parallel with the other consoles. That's just good news to me.
Out of firemen's truck-ing NOWHERE
what genre? Is it horror-y?
O_O YAY! I loved Fear Effect. It still looks like a comic book too.
Day1 NS purchase for me. Now please, Square Enix......please give us a Brave Fencer Musashi remaster. It would be oh so so so sweet on NS.
@KcebEnyaw
Thanks for the info
Cant wait - need it now!
@nab1
It ain't a triple A game, it's a old game remastered, not bad though, i have fear effect 1&2 on vita
Finally, some good Switch news for a change. Loved this series back in the PS1 days.
@EDF I meant triple A third party (Square Enix), not the game itself. The fact that they are releasing it on all consoles including the Switch is the real good news for me. That might bode well for other future releases.
@Pod [q]Here are two strong, body-positive female leads, that even have a bit of a relationship going on with each other.[/q]
That's not what body-positive means. Body positivity is about people accepting their own bodies and, yes, being okay with showing them. It's generally used when the bodies in question aren't the generally accepted definition of "hot". And the key thing is a person's own agency.
What you have here is a character designed by a group of men to titillate an audience of mostly straight men. Her body is the mainstream ideal, and she obviously doesn't have a choice in the matter.
Please note that I don't necessarily have a problem with what they did, I have no problem with characters of any gender showing some skin and I appreciate hot women as much as anyone. But let's be clear about the intent here. This was never meant to be some big breakthrough in representation of the LGBTQ community or body positivity. It's purely an attempt to get horny teens and twenty-somethings to play the game, like a lot of other "mature" video games have done.
@nab1
Oh OK, my bad, yep hopefully part 2. Maybe more old ps1 remakes like vagrant story or parasite eve, I have the Og games on vita but they would be good for switch remasters
@EDF No problem. My dream is that the FF7 remake is also released on the Switch, or any future FF game, but even just the remasters are great to have
@nab1
I don't think switch will get FF7 remake but it will get a FF game, I am expecting world of Final Fantasy vita game to make its way to switch or maybe a sequel, but one will come
Give me a worthy Breath of Fire, please.
Didn't these games use FMV for the backgrounds? I got this game and a PS2 a few months back, but I didn't get the chance to play it before the av cables messed up.
If so, I wonder if they'll be doing that for the remake.
Hmm, always wanted to play the original but just never got around to it. I'll keep an eye on this!
My only worry is with that trailer, the movement looked stilted. Like they cleaned up the art to look modern, but used same movements which needed us to forgive a lot more in the old days than you think
Right on. Never heard of it but I'll check it out
Looks so fine, SquEnix! Have to release physically, eh?
I am probably one of the few people who are actually looking forward to this...and yet, like those others, I'm probably just in it for the lesbians...although, I think that might've only been in Fear Effect 2...
Looks cool, hopefully it's one step closer for SquareEnix to release that Secret Mana Collection over here in the West.
A friend recommended this since its coming out so I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays!
It was on PS3 before. It's a great game! I encourage you all to get it.
If this is a TPS or FPS then I'm totally onboard. Switch really needs more shooters. Edit: Yes I'm on board 100%.
People seem to forget this was maybe the first game to use cell-shading, which made it look very different from anything else at the time. So yuri wasn't the only thing that made the game interesting, but it certainly made me happy (and horny). The gaming magazine in Croatia even released the sexy massage promo image (if you'll remember that one) as a poster. (:
I rented this game back in 1999 and enjoyed it. Will probably get the PC version for better FPS and resolution though.
Never even heard about this game before...
I'll keep an eye on it... though it probably won't be released in Japan (to keep the trend going)
The Switch floodgates are starting to open...
@LemonSlice It wasn't cel-shaded. Aside from there not being a black outline around the characters, their bodies were still just textured normally, albeit colored in ways to suggest anime.
Quite unexpected! I remember the original being decent, forgotten a lot of the sequel though.
@Moshugan I think they're fun, regardless. People say the same thing about turn-based battles as an excuse to turn tactical gameplay into button-mashing gameplay. They're both different things that different people like/dislike. Their origins is not relevant for those who like them.
@JasmineDragon
Obviously I agree, but be aware that this is a fictional character, and whether they "have a choice" is fictional as well. She might very well embody a body positive attitude in dressing the way she does. That she conforms to any kind of mainstream appeal cannot by itself undermine this.
Well aware of all of its flaws and the controversy surrounding it at the time, I unashamedly loved Fear Effect back in the day. It was a blast to play, it told an interesting story, and I will admit that, being a teenage boy at the time, I enjoyed looking at the pretty anime ladies.
Surprised and delighted by this announcement.
@victimOfNirvana Yeah, there's nothing wrong with fixed camera angles as such. I enjoy the likes of the original Resident Evil games too.
At least they are promising "tweaked controls", so hopefully they forego tank controls in favor of regular analogue stick controls that are relative to the screen.
@Sabrewing Well, it was early, but I remember a lot of positive commentary was made about the artstyle.
Hmm, could be nice.
