Remember FMV games? They were all the rage in the early '90s when some industrious person discovered that CD-ROMs could be used for storing oodles of grainy video footage featuring struggling actors reading from dodgy scripts, and now they are making a mini-comeback thanks to the likes of the award-winning Her Story.
Wales Interactive is bringing D’Avekki’s FMV title The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker to the Switch in Spring 2018, following its launch on PC this year. It's also coming to PS4 and Xbox One.
The game casts you as a psychiatrist who is trying to solve a murder whilst treating the patients of the titular Doctor Dekker, who has just died in suspicious circumstances. You need to ask questions to gain the evidence required to nail the killer - the identity of whom is completely randomised at the start of each play-though.
The console versions have been optimised to get around the lack of a keyboard, and will also boast various visual and navigational UI enhancements. What do you make of this new title? Let us know if you'll be entering the doctor's surgery by posting a comment.

this could be alot of fun but i wonder how the questions will work.
Good, but FMV games won't be fully resurrected until we get Plumbers Don't Wear Ties HD on Switch.
Late Shift was a good one as well !
Oldfashioned and ambitious at the same time. That's my kind of jive!
Sounds cool, if done right it should be an awesome experience. Also, I need to finish Her Story, since my laptop dying back then put a lid on that.
This reminds me that cgi cutscenes are trying to be as realistic as possible with each new console generation.
And I always wondered... why not cut the cgi crap and just film the scenes using real actors? Might as well go for full realism.
@nhSnork I've been searching for me... for that... giggles
Not for me, but glad this kind of stuff still around.
Clearly there's an audience for it.
I'll take Night Trap instead please......
Phantasmagoria is the only FMV game i would like to see on Switch (with updated video). Gabriel Knight II wouldn't hurt.
This looks like trash.
Awesome! If the file size isn't too big it'll be a day one download (or a physical buy if such an option is made available).
As corny as they are, I like my FMV choose-your-own-adventure style games. I was even fantasising about making one of my own when the floodgates for indies burst open during the Wii U days (as it would certainly be easier than animation, which I'm absolutely rubbish at).
dat UFO reference in the tittle, nice touch
Weird.
Still waiting on an official Switch Night Trap announcement!!
Doctor......who?
@Faruko I'm glad I wasn't the only one that noticed it, hahaha
@ZeldaToThePast ahhh. Brings back memories
@Faruko Yeah I caught that too. Gotta love MSG!
@gurtifus just about to mention it!!!
I played that last year with my girlfriend and it was pretty fun and well written.
Oh cool! I recall seeing this coming to PCs and then forgetting the title (while still wishing that I had played the game). Will pick it up on Switch if the port is good.
To be honest, this sort of thing excites me! I was one of the only kids in my neighborhood who had a Sega CD (I loved it, and still do), and I always loved the camp factor of the FMV genre!
I would love to see some of the "classics" get an HD revival on Switch! Dracula Unleashed, Sewer Shark, Tomcat Alley, Ground Zero Texas, Double Switch (R.I.P. Corey Haim), etc. They're fun party games! If anything, I think that FMV games have more of a place in today's realm of Anything Goes gaming than it did in the early-to-mid 90's, where fighting games and platformers were all of the rage.
Looks awesome! I always been a fan of FMV games for some reason. Hopefully it’s not too creepy though I don’t do well with horror games.
Having survived the era of FMV games with only a minor case of PTSD, I can say with certainty that today's youth have failed us if they're coming back.
@GC-161 The amazing thing is that would be MUCH cheaper, as well.
Erm? ok... its a sweet game on p.c. Strange that it's coming to switch but if it has a cart version i will totally get it
Wow! A UFO reference in the subtitle! Color me impressed Nintendolife!
"oodles of grainy video footage featuring struggling actors reading from dodgy scripts"
Awwwww... ):
I played a whole lot of FMV games, and while I don't exactly disapprove of the jab (though there were a few with good quality writing and acting), I enjoyed my time with those games a lot, and still like to play a few of the classics from time to time.
P.S. Sega CD is not exactly the champion of FMV adventures. You really needed to be a PC gamer to enjoy the good games.
@NEStalgia Plus real actors make a living and we don't get any of that uncanny valley thing going on that is so distracting.
Am curious... cautiously keeping an eye for this
"Rated M for Sexual Themes" What on Earth is in there? But this concept looks fascinating and I'm loving seeing FMV games make a cult comeback.
