RiME is taking its sweet time getting to the Nintendo Switch, with the release date now locked down to November.
However, there are valid reasons for this delay, and producer Cody Bradley has taken the time to explain what's what with a lengthy but informative blog post over the game's official site.
In the post, Bradley unravels the history of the Switch version, which was added to the roster very late in the day:
First, some history. The decision to go multi-platform was made a few months before it was announced last year. At that time, work was only underway on the PC and Xbox versions of the game. The Switch SKU had not yet entered active development.
Work began in earnest on the Switch SKU in August of 2016. Given that this was a new console, we made a bunch of educated guesses as to the work that would be involved porting it over to the new hardware. Some of these predictions turned out to be right, and some of them turned out to be wrong. Unfortunately, we didn’t know that they were wrong until work started to “wrap up” earlier this year.
The end result was that the port wasn’t living up to our quality standards, and we made the decision to delay the Switch version while we figured out what it would take to get things to where they needed to be. This involved a lot of testing various approaches and rework of art content. When we finally had a path forward, it became abundantly clear that we would need to delay again; the fixes were taking a lot of time to implement.
Right now, the teams at Tantalus and Tequila Works are busy optimizing shaders, fixing bugs, and getting the game ready for our submission to first party review. It takes about two months when all is said and done to actually get the game on store shelves after that point. If all goes well, this will be the last time you hear from us on this subject.
The wait may be a long one, but the developers are adding something to the Switch version: an achievement system which means Nintendo players will get the same experience as Xbox and PlayStation users:
One final note, we’re doing everything in our power to preserve the gameplay experience from other platforms. This means that all of the optimizations we’re chasing do not involve re-working levels. We feel that this is the only viable approach for our players. RiME is a special game, and everyone should have the same experience regardless of their platform of choice. In fact, in order to ensure that the same level of narrative parity is in the game, we have built an achievement system into the game, so that the significance of certain key moments is not lost.
With that, we’ll get back to it. We thank each of you for your patience, and hope that you find the wait worth it when you have a chance to play RiME on the Switch - at home or on the go - this November.
What do you make of Bradley's points? Will you wait patiently for the Switch version, or have you already played RiME on another system? Let us know with a comment.

First time I've ever been the first comment.
Achievements always appreciated. Never understood why Nintendo didn't adopt an achievement system. It was my favorite part of having a PS3.
Bugger achievements. Looking at the ones for the Xbox version, I don't see how they affect the narrative.
Again other companies try to do what Nintendo should do ... achievements system , voice chat etc ...
Eeeeh. By November it'll be cheap as chips on the other consoles. I'll wait for a sale, or find it in a bargain bin.
Reading this screams "the Switch struggles to keep the gameplay experience the same" which can only be due to hardware.
"rework of art content."
"we’re doing everything in our power to preserve the gameplay experience from other platforms. This means that all of the optimizations we’re chasing do not involve re-working levels."
I don't care about achievements, I think they are pointless, I don't understand why they were created in the first place. Aside from that, I will probably buy this game. I watched the ending because I had the feeling it could be like Brothers: A tale of two sons, a game that really disappointed me a lot, it was crap in my opinion, so I wanted to make sure this one was not going to be a similar, unpleasant experience, but now I think that this game can be much better and can be worth it and I am very interested.
"Achievement unlocked: Opened door"
Wow.
Just completed on PS4. An excellent game.
I am glad this isn't a rush job money grab. So looking forward to playing this
@LuckyLand I kind of agree with you, but achievements are great if they actually have some meaning within the game itself (as long as they don't lock too much behind them), such as providing monetary bonuses, granting you power-ups or stat boosts, or unlocking bonus content or customization options.
@Menchi187 No, it doesn't. It screams "we'd already started making the games on other platforms, and the Switch isn't 1:1".
In no way, shape or form are RIME a more demanding game to make than Breath of the Wild. But it's easier to make a game when you have the developers kit from the beginning.
Oh great, an achievement system. Honestly, I've never cared about such things and see no need for Nintendo to implement something this mundane when things like VC, web browser, Netflix and so on aren't there.
It won't detract from my interest in this game by any means and doubt any significant dev time has been put into it so all's good.
No... just no. "Achievements" are completely and utterly stupid.
e.g.
Congratulations! Played game for first time!
Played game for the 10,000th time!!
You've wasted 100 hours of your life playing this game!!!! Yaay!!!
Bought all available DLC (as of August 2017) so far!!! Thanks!!!!!!!
Spent 27 real-life days collecting weeds!!!!!!!!
Spent $100,000,000,000 of in-game money!
Performed a handstand in the back of a moving truck!!!
Whoopsie daisy! Your controller has run out of battery mid-game!
Our condolences! Profile inherited by descendant!
It's completely idiotic and preys on compulsive people without offering anything other than a tick on a list that is otherwise completely inconsequential to the game. People can make a list of their own "achievements" that they aspire to (how pathetic) if they really wanted to (should the game neglect to provide one). Gaming should be a hobby, not a compulsion. I can't even fathom the thought process of those who praise and yearn for such a toxic system, but then again, a certain narcissistic oaf is currently leading a certain nation, so perhaps I'm a little out of touch.
So in short, no, not a fan.
I've always loved achievements when I had the Xbox 360 and on the PS4 if I think I can Platinum a game I will always try (Horizon Zero Dawn etc) but at the same time I think who really cares?I'm proud of my Trophies I have earned but none of my friends give a **** (apart from one and he's a true Trophy Hunter)
I used to find it strange that Nintendo never added trophies or achievements but now I just admire them for sticking to their guns and just concentrating on making great and fun games that are played because people ENJOY playing them instead of because they just NEED to get that trophy..
Um...but back on topic,Rime looks like an excellent game and I'm sure this version will be just as good as the other versions
It'll be an achievement to finally see this game released.
And people wonder why Nintendo don't do or are great at achievements.
That's why. Your reward for collecting all 900 Korok seeds(which is a colossal effort) in BOTW was terrible and useless. A golden turd. It's almost like they were trolling achievements.
Achievements ruin the enjoyment of actually playing the game and discovering things for yourself. I'm glad Nintendo has never implemented them at OS level, most Nintendo games have a natural achievement system in them start with.
@sillygostly That list was hilarious!
I'm really indifferent when it comes to achievements in games. True, they are easy to scoff at. All they have ever provided for me is the odd giggle if some effort is put into the descriptions, or perhaps some clues to alternate paths or missed mini games in the descriptions of the locked ones post-completion.
Pleased to read that the devs are aiming for optimisation without compromising the gameplay structure of the existing version.
@sillygostly +1 Brilliant!
I have to say I was gripped by cheevos on my 360, but now as I'm older I just don't care lol unless every time you get one it unlocked a cheat or artwork or something of use it's pointless
I've never understood the obsession with trophies. It's like people need to feel validated in being a nerd in order to enjoy the game.
Well, Mario has had achievements in terms of things like star worlds, hidden levels. Zelda in finding heart pieces. Metroid finding missile expansions. Little things to extend gameplay. It's just instead of extending gameplay, you get a virtual gold trophy for killing x people with this sniper rifle. That's why rime was delayed...for this feature.
MyNintendo always rewards me
Nice explanation! Very detailed, unlike what other third parties do.
I think people are not understanding them. The didn't delay the game for including achievements guys, but for technical reasons that are well explained. Read the text again.
Good read that. I like it when developers are honest. Looking forward to the game.
@sillygostly
It doesn't matter whether you like them or not, they still should have put them in. I don't care about Achievements or Trophies at all but I still wish they'd put them in for those who do. I couls ignore them on Switch same as I do on other formats.
Same with the still-absent Media apps. Don't want them? Don't use them. But some people do, so get them in place.
@justin233 "Achievements always appreciated. Never understood why Nintendo didn't adopt an achievement system. It was my favorite part of having a PS3."
You didn't like the PS3 very much then, huh? ..let me guess - your favourite thing about the PS4 is the HDMI cable??! It's all about the games, dude - always - surely?!?!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE : Oh, man. That gift is amazing. I just love the thinly-veiled snarkiness of it. I'm not even remotely close to getting it though. BotW is great and all, but is it golden poo spiral great? Hmm...
What's ironic is that Nintendo has done achievements in specific games, just not a system-wide one.
I appreciate their honesty, and the fact that they don't want to rush an incomplete/non optimized game out the door and patch it later. Couldn't care less about achievements. Completing a game is achievement enough. I don't need to collect hundreds of participation trophies along the way.
I like trophies, but if it's not built in on a system level, it really doesn't have any appeal for me.
Trophies are a way to sort of "document progress". Like taking screenshots throughout your playtime. I love having hundreds of trophies spread across 100 different games.
If only Nintendo had a trophy system... sighhh. Even if they implement one with the paid online, half the games for Switch will have missed out on it already cause I'll already have played them.
Anyways, I'm good with delays. Get it right. I have other stuff to play in the meantime.
I don't need pop-up achievements, but if the game had achievements on other platforms, it should be transfered to the other systems as well or it feels like content is cut. I had this in The Cave for Wii U.
Such hate for trophies/achievements in this section. I like hunting trophies down on my PS3/4 but the ones I go for never feel like a chore for me. The ones that do I just don't bother with. They're really no different to any other challenge or list of tasks in a video game that hasn't existed before achievement systems were a thing. Only difference is you get them displayed on your digital profile.
Sometimes they do get me to do things I wouldn't normally have done, which I appreciate because then I get more out of a game. That being said, it's not like they're needed. I certainly didn't need an achievement system on the Switch to complete all the shrines in BotW. Likewise, I was happy to 100% games I enjoyed before these systems were in place.
Achievement is just a Garnish of the games, not important at all for me.
Achievement or not, Who the heck cares about ?!
@PLATINUM7
Eh... pardon me.
Not everyone get motivated by Achievement system.
Maybe for you is useful, others think it useless.
Games should be a Freedom, not Lectured by Achievement system. Not every gamers are Hardcore. Some of them play it in Normal way, not in Extreme way.
@LuckyLand funny thing is I hate achievements because for me I feel like they kinda ruined the experience for me for a period. It wasn't the achievements themselves rather the gamer score on Xbox live. My friends and I got kinda competitive with our gamer scores for a while and it started to impact the games I would play and the systems I would purchase games for. Now I don't bother worrying about achievements and things are like they used to be. Just play good games for the exper and enjoyment.
@NaviAndMii Well obviously I enjoyed the games... I just remember having a great time trophy hunting. Maybe I should have said "one of my favorite aspects of owning a PS3." To each their own.
Wow, I've never seen so many people so adamantly against achievements. Here's a tip: if you don't like them, just ignore them, it's really not that hard. No one is forcing you to complete them, it's just an extra little system to reward players for playing the game. If you don't want to kill 100 of a certain enemy, or whatever the case is, than it's simple - don't.
@justin233 Yeah, I was really hoping Nintendo would finally do it. They could make a real fun achievement system with plenty of items from different games.
@business-scrub
"Wow, I've never seen so many people so adamantly against achievements. Here's a tip: if you don't like them, just ignore them, it's really not that hard.x
This is all anybody needs to know on the subject. They should be there for those that want them and those that don't care (like me) can ignore them.
Nice to see a company carefully taking their time to get it right instead of just dumping a poor port at the deadline. Makes me willing to wait for them.
Meh. Maybe I'll buy it in January, if there's no major release then 'cause I gotta save up for Odyssey. Same reason why I'm skipping Brawlout too...
I may still get it in November. I'd rather they take time to make sure it's right.
@electrolite77
As simple as it sounds for a completionist it's not so much. Checking off all the boxes so to speak is a very satisfying itch to scratch and can be incredibly frustrating when you get one that says play upside down while yodeling God save the Queen to the tune of Yankee Doodle.
But that is one minor thing from the sounds of their post and more that they did a bunch of guessing when programming before they got their kit the try to get a leg up and now they have to smooth some bumps.
I enjoy doing achievements once in a while, but I'm not trying to unlock them all the time. Heck, even ignoring them completely helped me unlock achievements without trying.
I'm happy to hear they're taking their time. I passed on PS4 since my Switch version was already ordered and I want the same experience. Thank you, Tequila works.
because switcherella only gets to eat after her step-sisters have gorged.
@justin233 Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-achievements or anything - I don't think that they really add much of any real significance to the majority of games (mainly due to unimaginative developer integration) - but, for the most part, they're pretty harmless...and the well thought out ones can add extra layers and incentives to games which are pretty neat.
The main reason that I think that Nintendo should consider implementing them on a system level is that they seem to encourage brand loyalty - which can only be good for them - and I'd also be curious to see how Nintendo would approach adding an achievement system with a 'typically Nintendo' twist, just to see how they'd spin it
...equally though, I do think that some people exaggerate their importance a touch - they're nice, they're neat, they're harmless, they can be addictive - but games were perfectly playable before achievements existed & they still are today.
I wouldn't be against them being added at system level at all - but I'll always get far more enjoyment from the quality games and software than whatever the OS offers...
I'm grateful they're taking thier time and can't wait. Looks really cool.
Essentially ANY other Switch dev say : "its very simple and fast port a game on the Switch", and they have soooo many issues with that, and they start a year ago.
What i say ? BULLPOOPZ
@PLATINUM7 I think the hate comes not from the feelings towards achievements themselves, but from how they're used as another way of criticizing Nintendo. I've seen too many people assert, as though it were obvious fact, that they are an essential feature of modern gaming which Nintendo is out of touch to omit. There is nothing wrong with achievements, of course, nor anything wrong with liking them, but that doesn't mean they're essential, and it certainly doesn't mean Nintendo is wrong not to mandate them.
Chickenholes here apparently need to flip their lids when Achievements as a concept come up. I desperately want an Achievement system on Switch because it adds so much to the experience for me.
And guess what? YOU CAN IGNORE THEM IF YOU DON'T CARE. I promise it's not hard
@Mando44646 - Hilarious, you're the only one here flipping your lid. Calm down.
@sillygostly yaasss!! Logged in just to give your comment kudos. Well said. 👏👏👏. I agree wholeheartedly.
@PanurgeJr
So some people want something that other platform holders offer but Nintendo don't? And Nintendo get criticised for that.
Well, yeah.
@Manjushri
Chortle
@electrolite77 Wanting achievements is fine. Believing Nintendo should mandate them, or is behind the times for not doing so, is absurd.
I like trophies, dislike achievements. Nintendo can only benefit from implementing something like this
Once again, an indie game receiving a lot of bashing in the comments, over a feature that does not even affect most people, of all things.
I don't care for achievements either, but I at least appreciate them for trying to make the Switch version on-par with the rest. Some people actually do like achievements and now they won't miss out here.
@peeks yes they shoud. we need more motivation when we achieve stuff in a game. It's not feeling rewarding though collecting all stuff if you don't see anything. I stopped caring to complete everything without the rewarding system. That's lacking on N consoles. Period
@Mgene15 both are the same. at least more motivation to gain more points and you will return more often to a game to achieve. Sony did use it but in different way, but not much rewarding as on xbox that's for sure. Hey each his own
@Sinton I'm sorry but this does scream they are struggling to maintain the experience. Sure it is easier to develop a game from the start when all platforms are right in front of you. I'm speaking from experience. However sometimes the platforms your targeting has a weak link. How many times has an indie had to delay a vita version of a game in this scenario. If the switch was a much more powerful platform a lot of the items described in the article would not be an issue. Reworking one or two assets sure. Reworking them all including levels is the kind if nightmare you find in porting a game like borderlands 2 to the vita. That's really what is going on here. These problems would have existed even if the switch version was developed side by side. It has less than half the memory, less than half the performance. Only reason this system will get considered is because it is in ear shot of the minimum PC spec for these games. That is very telling. In this scenario that you propose probably would have resulted in all three getting delayed instead as they would be floundering about with switch issues taking time from other platforms. This could lead to some vitaesque decisions in the long run to get the main game out the door. Maybe even scenarios like project cars on wii u.
The switch version will always be the compromised version. But I think this article outlines another issue. One developers at least in comment sections have been popping up and expressing. This isn't as easy to do as Nintendo suggests. It still requires a concentrated effort to get a modern game running on it. The switch isn't anything new in terms of game development, its an old problem going as far back as the original gameboy. Dare I say further with the nes.
It amazes me that Nintendo can pump out titles as good looking as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but 3rd party developers always seem to be struggling and toiling to get their unimpressive-looking games even functionally running on it
@PanurgeJr
They are behind the times though. And I don't even like them. If they're not providing something others are, they will get criticised. Don't worry, it doesn't actually affect you personally and I'm sure the wealthy multi-format corporation can cope.
@Zapazoid
Really? That amazes you? The company that makes the console and knows it inside out makes better-looking games than those who, well, don't? That's always been the way.
Yeah it does. It's not just that the games are better looking, it's that these other developers can't even get their significantly less visually demanding games working on the thing (without delays and public admittance and whatnot). Maybe they're all just used to being really sloppy with optimization
@electrolite77 And there it is. You don't like Nintendo and have manufactured a reason to criticize them.
@MariOnline
Hmm then you haven't played animal crossing Amiibo festival or mario tennis on wii u then
@Zapazoid really. That amazes you.
@EDF are they rewarding like Nintendo.
@shaneoh they don't affect narrative. and i don't think that would be point of achievements anyway...
@Zapazoid Are you serious? Nearly every major Nintendo game on the Wii U was delayed, and the reasons given even by Nintendo themselves was that development was hard and took longer than expected. Nintendo has the financial means to devote years into developing a game that exists solely on their platform. Small indie teams do not have those resources, nor the familiarity with the platform.
@electrolite77 It's okay if you don't like a company, but criticizing it simply because it doesn't provide some inessential features is asinine. If you want some features, you can say it, but if you don't really want them, using them as an instrument to criticize a company you don't like is pointless.
Until systems give me an option to completely opt out of their pointless busywork, errm I mean "achievement," system, I will be vehemently against its inclusion in any game or system.
@amanatee
This is what they've said:
"In fact, in order to ensure that the same level of narrative parity is in the game, we have built an achievement system into the game, so that the significance of certain key moments is not lost."
So yeah, they're confusing a pointless bit of fluff for narrative and content.
@Zapazoid Well man, then you should start creating games like Mario Kart 8 on the Switch. But hey, good luck getting the money, the people, the resources, and the knowledge of the system to make it properly and in a short time. Not every company is like Nintendo, you know. And of course, not every company knows how the Switch actually is as well as Nintendo... I would understand you complain about a poopy port of a 3DS game from a HUGE company like Capcom. But from a small, unknown company like Tequila Works? That's unfair man.
Another title getting ported to the Nintendo Switch that has took way to long and I think the sales of this game will reflect that . There will be way to many other good games out when they finally release this title and I believe it will hurt the interest and sales of this title .
@LuckyLand
Seriously? You didn't like Brothers? It was very sad, but I felt like it was a very moving experience personally and don't regret playing it one bit.
This game isn't doing anything the Switch can't handle if the devs are talented enough.
Cool. Achievements.
@justin233 Can't believe nobody, including you, has said this yet, so I'll do it.
Achievements unlocked:

@PanurgeJr Clearly I am slipping, curse my fondness for afternoon naps
I'm genuinely surprised to see so much hate for achievements. Most modern game systems allow you to turn off achievements/ trophies if you dont like them. In addition you dont HAVE to do them ya know. Like some you guys act like the mere existence of achievements ruins games. Does Smash bros suddenly become a crap series because there are challenges to do in Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4?
@Oat Is there an option to disable trophies on the PS4?
@NinNin contrary to what @Oat has said, there are no way to disable achievements or trophies, you can only disable the notifications.
@shaneoh Thanks for the information.
I'm glad Nintendo don't force achievements on us. Achievements should be implicit in the game, not an explicit list of checkboxes with meaningless trophies. Super Mario World had 'achievements' you know. Find all the secret exits in the Star World, and you're rewarded with more content. New levels and a new look and colour scheme to the whole game if you complete them all. You're not rewarded with a stupid pointless trophy.
Also if Mario had achievements in the style of other games:
Achievement unlocked! Jumped 10 times on the spot.
Achievement unlocked! Jumped 20 times on the right side of the screen.
Achievement unlocked! Killed 10 Goombas in a row.
Achievement unlocked! Killed 10 enemies in a row, here's a trophy instead of some extra lives.
I remember reading a comment on here from someone once. "Nintendo should add achievements to their games because, you know, what's the point in playing games otherwise". Pathetic. Leave my hobby alone you cretin. Next you'll be wanting voice chat in Mario Odyssey.
I've always liked when devs add challenges at the game-level that unlocks modes and art, not sure if Rime will do that though. On-system achievements don't matter, games do.
And about the korok seeds. I find it hilarious that while 900 seeds expands your inventory considerably, people only complain about the item at the end....completely ignoring what the journey got them. An item that may still have significance in the finally DLC pack.
@Jamotello
Switcherella ?
Hahahaha...
It was sad but true....
Nintendo Switch oftenly got the port at last, like on Cinderella story, bullied by her Stepsisters and Wicked Stepmother, got the leftover dishes for her grub.
@FiveDigitLP I felt the ending was unnecessarily sad in a very cheap way. I also felt like the behaviour of the dad was unnecessarily cold and harsh in the ending cutscene. The rest of the game was quite empty and very short but not completely unpleasant, but I felt like they tried to made it look like there was more to the game with that "sad" ending which felt completely cheap and out of place, that's why I didn't like it.
@NinNin
Absolute drivel. I want Nintendo to do well, which means offering as much to consumers as possible, whether I want them personally or not.
It's amusing to see some are finding this such a difficult concept.
@PanurgeJr
The reason to criticise them is them not doing something. You seriously overestimate what power I have if you think I manufactured that
@sillygostly
I don't know how old you are sir but I've always seen achievements as a way of just proof of beating a game or accomplishing certain,difficult task. When I was a kid there was very few ways of proving your gaming achievements to your friends. So you beat Mike Tyson in punchout ey? A picture or it didn't happen. That's only one example. I honestly think achievements were better thought out in the 360/ps3 era. They were usually locked behind progress in the game or doing something really difficult. Like say beating all levels on the most difficult setting. Now they are really easy to.....achieve. Some are as simple as going to the options in game. So I guess I agree with you when it comes to achievements in current gen machines. But I think in their original inception they were pretty cool and a fun little way of extending the life of a game.
@justin233 Bill Trinen once said, while speaking on behalf of some of Nintendo's designers, that the reason Nintendo does not do achievements is that they don't want to tell players how they should play a game. Achievements can stifle an experience by limiting the player to what the developers thought was interesting and therefore de-emphasizing the player's own actions that don't yield achievements.
@Menchi187 I took it to mean we're a small shop working on a new system and we're having problems.
Glad to hear that the devs are taking their time (and I feel the same about Yooka-Laylee Switch). It's nice when we can have things release at the same time as other platforms, but it stands to reason that, given the radically different console infrastructure, that some serious adaptation work needs to occur. For some games (most recently Overcooked), ports without careful consideration and lengthy playtesting leads to poor results.
@LuckyLand
Huh. Interesting. I didn't see it that way at all, but to each his own! I have my own games that everyone else likes, but I personally can't stand.
I have been keep saying this. Ports take time. I bet the same is happening with 2K for NBA and WWE. Both games are coming but the Switch is new so ppl need to have a little bit of patience. Next year I beat things will get better and on par with others. Lets support developers that do hard work for Switch by waiting for the Switch copy of the game we want to buy.
@peeks like nis with disgaea
@shaneoh sorrry, I was talking about disabling notifications but I wasn't clear enough. My bad
Oh Achieveme...zzzzzz. I hope they aren't intrusive (yes I find the pop up notification intrusive) or that you can turn them off. I prefer achievements (if you have to have them) in the form of titles (like in street fighter 4 3ds or) its in a menu in the back of options screen but you can attach them to your online profile for your online measuring contest.
I miss when playing a game well or thoroughly got you more content or artwork or music...not "bragging rights".
The Nintendo apologists here are insane. Ok cool you don't like Achievements. They're also completely optional and can't possibly bother you so that's an irrelevant opinion. For some other people they provide motivation to go back and find things after the story is complete, and for other people they add a social aspect to single player games that makes your games feel connected. To not have them on a console in 2017 is not ok, period.
I find it worrying that people are over the moon with games like this getting released on Switch, when they only have had lukewarm reviews on other consoles.
Basically anything that's garbage on other consoles gets praised on Switch. It shouldn't be like that. It says a lot about how weak Nintendo has become.
Maybe it's the fascination of being able to take garbage straight to the toilet, literally.
@shaneoh oh, weird.
