Re: "The Flavour Tends To Get Lost" - Dragon Quest's Yuji Horii On English Translations

bluesun

Back in the Dragon Quest 3 Remake interview, he brought up the same topic, lamenting "my wife", English having absolutely no other words to refer to a married woman than "my wife".

It does seem like he might be 'simply' going by some 'simple' English lessons, as it's at odds with the localizations insisting on turning things into a slog through massively multiplying textboxes of Arthurian epic.

Honestly, it'd be ironic if their wordiness turned out to be from some request of his to add more flavour, that he goes to judge based on "I" and "my" still being there and not notice any difference.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Announces Final Ranked Battle Season

bluesun

@Henchdog These are seasons in the ranked online battle mode. To enter / win prizes, you'd have to play / win online battles against other players.

Prizes for ranking high in Season 40 (March) are listed on Pokemon's announcement: https://sv-news.pokemon.co.jp/en/page/410.html (it's just random items and League Points)
Season 41 (April onward) won't have an end, so won't have any prizes: https://sv-news.pokemon.co.jp/en/page/389.html

Re: Resident Evil Requiem Leakers Deserve "A Thousand Deaths", Says Hideki Kamiya

bluesun

It's a hyperbolic idiom that seems to be originally from a Chinese novel, expressing the severe gravity of a crime.
From a culture which doesn't have such a taboo on death as English.

To offer a potential similarly provocative English equivalent, just consider the English phrase 'I hope you rot in hell'.
Maybe someone, somewhere out there could think that's even more extreme expression: a religion-related phrase hoping for eternal damnation rather than 'only' ten thousand deaths.

Re: NIS Accidentally Reveals Upcoming Switch 2 Game, Sparking Even More Direct Speculation

bluesun

@JimNorman @JohnnyMind
Honogurashi is an existing word in Japanese, 仄暗し, faintly+dark (-> dim/gloomy).
This game's title swaps out ~暗しgurashi meaning 'dark' for ~暮しgurashi meaning 'living somewhere'.
Naturally Google had no idea what to do with a newly-coined pun.

An actual translation could be something like Gloom-life Garden (Admittedly that'd lose the honogurashi homonym pun, but it's much better than 'Honolulu' )

  • Torishima: But there's this thing named 'compliance'...
    It's well... A kind of... How should I put it... Absolute god, should I call it?
    Like an evil acting in the name of good.
    Nothing will ever cause no discomfort in everyone.
    Sure, you can learn about the trends here and over in every other country.
    But I mean, nice and nasty, good and evil — everyone has their own perspectives on them.
    When creating things, at the core of it... There's some things that you must never do, but as long as you're not doing those, you can do anything, right?
    But it's not like that.
    There's... Um... In the West — Coming over from the UK and US, coming over from the West...
    In America, there's this puritanical thinking that comes from their religious ideas, right?
    Their idea of 'compliance' is really narrow-minded.
    Even when they release manga volumes over there, they have to split them up by ages.
    They can't release Shonen Jump manga volumes unless they say "13 up", for 13 years and above, on them.
    All the stock would have to be reprinted.
    And they get lawsuits over it, so they need insurance too.
    Dealing with such a stupid country is a huge pain.
    And Japan's being negatively influenced by all that, too.
  • Horii: Even with the main character, you choose between male or female, but you can't say "Choose between a man or woman".
    It's "Type 1 or Type 2".
    Male and female... Who even is complaining about that? I don't get it.

Re: Dragon Quest's Creator Criticises 'Mistranslation' Of DQ3 Remake Costume Comments

bluesun

What a weird mess. From what I can tell, the story so far...

  • The creators complained about the ridiculousness of America.
  • Someone quickly subtitled the relevant part in English, mistranslating at least one word.
  • Elon Musk saw it and said "This is insane".
  • Worried they were being called insane, the creators tried to erase the evidence, and appease Japanese audiences by claiming it was all a mistranslation.
  • But English audiences are used to mistranslations, and the message was clear anyway.

@Samalik @SalvorHardin @Eel @jaughndis

Since I couldn't find a proper translation anywhere to try and show how 'puritan' would even make sense, here's one I did up myself.

  • Chris: Oh, on a slightly different topic, there's also the "Look A" and "Look B" thing...
  • Horii: Oh, right. There is, isn't there.
    Well, if you change jobs to a Wizard, you turn into an old man, right? Some kids don't like that stuff.
    So now it's different, and you get to choose.
  • Chris: There was also a lot of talk about the costumes, concerning whether they would be the same as before or not.
  • Horii: Right. Well, there were various regulatory measures. Like "You can't show too much skin".
  • Chris: Oh... Well... That's a point I don't intend to dig too deeply about...
    But it's fine though. It's fiction, but becoming a fictional hero and going out on adventures, that's totally fine...
    Am I wrong about that?
  • Horii: What is that about anyway? I don't get it myself.
  • Chris: It's a game. It's fiction, but your virtual experience inside that fiction is what's real, so surely, as long as it's fun, then it's fine.
    That's what I can't help but think.
  • Horii: Well, if you show too much skin, it'll raise the age rating. It won't be 'for all ages' anymore.
  • offscreen: Well, each country has different rules, so if you want to sell it in lots of places, you can't help but worry about the strictest place.
  • Chris: Back in the day, nobody thought about things like that...

Re: New Limited-Time Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Distribution Now Available

bluesun

It's meant for people who are watching the tournament this weekend, rather than to give everyone worldwide time to hear about it.
And since it's a Japan tournament, it expired by midnight Japan time...

Usually the tournament-winner Pokemon events have only been for the weekend of the tournament, the Singaporean Gyarados seems unusual in running so long.

Re: Capcom Reminds Monster Hunter Fans About 3DS And Wii U Online Shut Down

bluesun

@Tasuki
The eShop's staying for redownloads of games + eShop DLC.

Some games like Monster Hunter had extra free downloads from the developer though, not going through the eShop (mostly it was Capcom/Level5/Dragon Quest) - e.g. Monster Hunter's 'DLC' was downloading files directly from Capcom.
Those ones would have to be downloaded in the next few days.

Re: Dave The Diver Getting Physical Switch Release With Guilty Gear Collab Content

bluesun

@JohnnyMind The DLC's almost certainly going to be available to buy separately, but maybe on a delay.

Arc System Works have done the exact same thing previously (including a Guilty Gear crossover DLC with their physical release of another Korean game, Mistover), and that crossover DLC was released on the eShop two months after the physical release.

my interpretation:

You look stable right now, but in the past, you've been defeated by Sony and phone games. What external risks are you keeping in mind?

Our current popularity is not stable at all, we're always working with the mindset that we're in imminent danger. Generation changes are hard, we keep failing immediately after a successful generation. We need to keep innovating, now more than ever, so customers don't lose interest in us.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's DLC Physical Release In Japan Includes A Game Card

bluesun

@WoomyNNYes
BotW+DLC did include English support. Splatoon2+DLC didn't, as the original Japanese Splatoon2 didn't. If MK8D+DLC follows the pattern of matching the Japanese release, it should include English.

BotW+DLC and Splatoon2+DLC were also sold in Asia (there were Hong Kong/Korea versions of BotW+DLC and a Hong Kong version of Splatoon2+DLC), so the +DLC releases could even be a way of reaching nearby Asian markets that don't have an eShop, or have a severely locked down eShop but can play imported carts (China).

Re: Red Dead Redemption's Estimated File Size Revealed On The Switch eShop

bluesun

@BenAV @Dm9982
And Hatsune Miku shouldn't even be 39GB in the first place.

DLC bundle 1 is 2.8GB, bundle 2 is 2.3GB, and bundle 3 is 19.9GB(!!!). Despite each bundle being about the same amount of content.

Bundle 3 was filled with junk just so the size would be 39GB in total, because 39 can be pronounced 'Miku' in Japanese.

Re: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Switch Physical Version Requires Downloads

bluesun

Tried different countries on the site to see if anywhere was getting bigger carts, looks like no.
But it seems the sizes even vary among regions, MGS in particular doubling in size for EU.

JP / US / EU:
Cart needs a: 27.9 / 24.1 / 29.5 GB download (downloads being 2.4GB smaller than eShop purchase, as 2.4GB is already stored on cart)
MGS: 6.2 / 4.8 / 10.2 GB (without MG1/MG2: 4.8 / 3.4 / 8.8 GB)
MGS2: 11.1 / 8.0 / 8.0 GB
MGS3: 11.5 / 12.2 / 12.2 GB
Bonus contents: 1.0 GB + 30GB for bonus videos ('Digital Graphic Novel' 1 and 2)

Re: Rumour: The Internet Goes Wild Over Supposed Persona 3 Remake Gameplay

bluesun

Whenever I see that warning text, it usually has a ※ asterisk before it, so it seemed kinda suspicious that this doesn't have one.

Looking up this news on Japanese sites, seems like Japan's suspicious of the text for a different reason, saying it's a consumer warning, so would never have been added to internal footage.

Re: Digimon World: Next Order Doesn't Include Dual Audio On Switch

bluesun

Bandai gets all the bizarre region messes these days...
For other stuff like Mr. Driller, they've removed the English audio on the Switch port and only left Japanese audio.
Maybe they finally heard people don't like English being removed, and decided to do this instead?
Guess I'll have to look into a Japanese copy...

Re: Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition Update Now Available, Here Are The Patch Notes

bluesun

Haven't played it yet, so it's a bit hard to understand what the text is talking about, but incase it helps, here's a summary of the Pip parts. From looking up info about how Pip worked, it seems to be mostly fixing weirdnesses/glitches that could leave the character with problems.

After evolving into a different form, when Pip receives a level star, the growth rate of the evolved form will be applied (The very first level star after evolving will still apply the pre-evolved growth rate.)

When you Continue+, if the Pip in the cleared save has better stats than the receiving save, the values will be carried over as they are and not reduced.

When you Continue+, if the Pip in the cleared save has more grids open than the one in the receiving save, the grids will be carried over as they are and not reduced. If you then evolve Pip into a different form, extra grids will be unlocked as well.

If Pip evolves when at level star 99, its status and grids will be adjusted to the ones of the evolved form after battle.

If Pip has already been evolved when at level star 99 prior to applying the update, its status and grids will be adjusted to the ones of the evolved form when loading your save.

Re: Digital Sales Make Up Nearly Half Of FY 2023 Switch Software Sales So Far

bluesun

Using the data in the chart it's possible to break down the data further:

FY23/Q1-Q3

  • 26.4% revenue from 'downloadable versions of packaged software' (blue part)
  • 19.6% revenue from 'download-only software, add-on content, NSO, etc' (yellow part)
  • 54% revenue from physical games (remainder)

So when there's a choice of both formats, it's 67%-33%: two-thirds of the revenue coming from physical games, only one-third from digital equivalents.

Re: PokéDoko Teases Special "World Premiere" Video To Celebrate 1,000+ Pokémon

bluesun

It's going to be the "One Thousand Pokemon" video released today.
Looking at the Japanese announcement, it didn't even say "World premiere", seems like that was made up by serebii...

@MysticX It's just common Japanese phrasing, like how something originally written in English might say 'dozens of times' but other languages might not. The phrase 'enjoy 100 times more' in Japanese gets 30 million google hits.

@eltomo Yep, that's the right time.

Re: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Scheduled Maintenance Spotted

bluesun

"It's not often you see an unreleased game like this featured on this particular Twitter account"

Since this "100 titles a day" upgrading started, it looks like there's quite a few question marks in the batch 'maintenance finished' posts. The question marks could potentially be more unreleased games (but can't even try to check without knowing their IDs).

Hopefully when the upgrading finishes, the twitter will post all the question mark IDs.

@FishyS
If you hover over the percentages, you can see the exact vote numbers. As of 3587 votes, it's 42 1000-2000 votes, and 39 2000+ votes.

Also, there's a couple odd ways to get a Ring Fit digital copy. EU has a bundle with console + game code, JP you can order a copy with a code instead of cart from the online store, and in China... all copies are codes, but Chinese games are region-locked.

Re: Fire Emblem Fates Sales Will End On The 3DS eShop In February 2023

bluesun

@Sinton
The DLC store doesn't unlock until after chapter 6, so all DLC is locked behind reaching that point.

It's only the (iirc EU/JP) digital version which doesn't actually download the path you choose until you make the choice, physical copies already have the data on the cart for the choice that's on the box.

Re: Super Rare Announces Limited Physical Version Of Aerial_Knight's Never Yield

bluesun

SRG's a tiny bespoke webstore which only sells limited copies of their own games, for only one console.

How does that make them "one of the busiest physical game retailers on the planet".

GAME or any retailer with actual shops would laugh at the comparison. A single GAME store could probably have more stock than SRG at any one time.

If this wasn't an advertisement, it sure sounds like one.

Re: Nintendo Launches Subscription Service For Switch Repairs In Japan

bluesun

@Frostyboy @gaga64
"the 6 repair a year is to stop one person getting the sub and send everyone they know Joycon off to get repaired"

"it means they’re prepared for people with 3 pairs of Joy-Cons to have each one need repairing once a year. Or 2 pairs of Cons, the screen and the dock or a Pro Controller, or…"

Looks like it's already pretty limited and doesn't even let you do that much.

One policy only covers one console (+ the joycons that came with it).
So if you have multiple joycons and the wrong ones break, they're not covered.
(You have to take a photo of the serials screen on the Switch when signing up.)

Have a Switch Lite? Your joycons won't be covered.
Have multiple Switches? Each one needs its own policy.
Trade-in for a new Switch? Needs a new policy.
Battery issues? Battery replacements aren't covered.

The way the terms are written, it sounds like if Nintendo replaces your joycons with ones with a different serial number, they won't be covered anymore either.

Re: Random: Nintendo Shareholder Apparently Asked For A New F-Zero At General Meeting

bluesun

@CANOEberry @AlanaHagues
The tweet was from NStyles. Google translate often messes up. The "you" never existed in the Japanese.

It seems NStyles and Momiji talked after the meeting, and NStyles said the 'it'll be hopeless if everything's cut, still a chance if it remained' quote to Momiji, speculating on what Nintendo would do in the minutes.
Which he's then repeating on twitter, since it did remain after all.
