Ubisoft's Just Dance 2018 is one of those franchises which owes a lot to the success of the original Wii. Nintendo's motion-sensing console was the perfect platform for the game's wild and wacky dance moves, and the series has been a yearly fixture ever since.
What's truly amazing is that in the UK at least, the Wii continues to be the most popular console for Just Dance fans. According to Chart-Track, the game - which made its UK debut last week in 23rd place - sold best on the Wii, followed by Switch, Xbox One and Wii U. Wii accounted for 32 percent of total sales, with Switch just behind with 31 percent.
While Nintendo may have turned its back on the Wii a long time ago (and has also dumped its successor, the Wii U) it would seem that a lot of people still dig out the system for dance sessions every now and then.

Just makes no sense at all.
Why?
Makes sense given the Wii's massive casual audience.
It's really logical, and a super smart move from Ubi.
The Wii had a huge casual audience that didn't buy any new console afterwards, but still enjoy video games.
Happy families will have lots of fun in 480i this holiday season.
Happy for the fans. Clearly it's a title that's easy to produce. Good for the fans and good for Ubisoft. No losers here. Not my thing personally, but it's always nice to see non-mainstream titles get support.
Why are people buying $60 for their wii? Can't they just save for a current-gen console?
It's frightening what the general public likes. Complete garbage and yet we see critical hits be commercial flops.
I'm guessing actual numbers of around 8, 6, 4 and 2.
Wii doesn't have any other games, so if you own a Wii you buy JD. Some people have probably only bought JD on their Wii every year for the past 5 or 6 years.
Makes complete sense as these people probably only play just dance. Why buy a new console just for just dance.
Do wonder how long Ubisoft will continue with Wii versions though.
@BezBot I'd guess a lot of these purchases go to parents with 4 or 5 kids, more girls than boys, and they already own 5 or 6 Wiimotes. Do you want to buy a PS4 and 3 other $60 PS4 controllers or Move just so your kids can get their groove on? A $300 Switch would need another $80 pair of Joycon.
So my simplistic views aside, I'm guessing it's more about the controllers than the console. And people buying Just Dance don't play video games they just play JD, and maybe a karaoke game or party guessing game.
This is why I may start using my Wii instead of the Switch. The latest greatest releases just aren’t doing it for me. Might play some ‘casual’ Wii games instead.
Not surprised. Just Dance has always sold best on Wii.
It's a game that doesn't need to be in HD to be just as fun. Thanks to its artstyle, it looks just as good on Wii. It's also a game that sells outside of counties that usually buy games.
Its not such a bad thing, I still have my Wii, and to be honest after owning a couple of Just Dance for Wii U, there isn't that massive a difference aside from graphics and online options. I probably would go for Wii version if it was cheaper. I am not a casual, just sometimes a laugh to dance like an idiot with a bunch of friends lol.
I would also buy SNES games if there would be new releases. I see no problem using old hardware for "good" games. "Good" is, of course, subjective.
The casual audience of both this series and the Wii was a match made in heaven. Let's not forget that the Wii sold overwhelmingly well. It's one of the most produced systems EVER. A lot of people still have one.
It makes sense though. These are probably the grandparents and uncles/aunts who aren't huge gamers, but own a wii for casual games like these.
not surprised. was the same with Just Dance 2017.
My backyard neighbor’s still play there Wii quite regularly. I was putting dog out last night and i could see the waggling and I know they have atleast 1 of these games. My oldest son has played with them before.
Not me. Wii sports still gets plenty of use in our house though.
Welp! Seems the Wii will get Just Dance 2019 then!
@HopeNForever : Seems that way! I have my doubts that there will be a Wii U version next year though. Who knows? The games cost so little to make (considering the number of different versions that are produced) that it may still happen. The Switch version has also sold astonishingly well conisdering the relatively minute userbase (100 million vs 6 million?) and the fact that the Switch version costs nearly double that of the Wii version (AU$50 vs AU$90).
I'm surprised that you guys are surprised, a lot of people bought the Wii and even the Xbox 360 + Kinect just for dancing games.
I know some people who even bought the Wii just for Wii Fit, there is a market for these type of games and is actually pretty huge.
I also heard them say on IGN NVC that people would buy this game as a collector's item because it's likely to be the last published Wii game.
Nice one. This makes perfect sense really, and it's nice to see.
Wii is still alive...
Funny thing is the Wii will probably get a JD 2019 while this is very likely the last ever Wii U game release.
@olrodlegacy there's probably a lot of people who never upgraded. Maybe some who didn't upgrade till very late in the life cycle. For some, maybe they only use it for this, Netflix and bowling. Looks like if the series continues, the WiiU gets another release.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Why is it frightening? Just Dance is not a game, it's entertainment. People don't necessarily look for what critics look for. That's true in all media, not just games.
@BezBot for a lot of people, the WiiU is all they need. Honestly, if the Switch weren't so cool, I probably would have stuck it out with the WiiU. I still have a big backlog. But with the Switch being a full blown handheld, it would be hard for me to pass on.
This is why, if you have the right game, it's actually worth supporting older systems that can have user bases that go above a hundred million. I always find it idiotic how so many companies immediately drop a system that's sold that many systems in the rush to get onto the newest thing, and that included the company that actually made the system too. It's just daft to me. Nintendo could have made the Wii a viable system for many more years, particularly if it had been a little more forward thinking and made it around as powerful as the other systems at the time and then released the Wii U gamepad as a peripheral for Wii rather than a whole new system that very little people ultimately gave a crap about in the end anyway. Just imagine if the Wii had been further supported with the gamepad and then all the games that came to Wii U for the next few years instead of being dropped like a brick for a system that basically no one bought. . . . It could have gone on to outsell every other console in existence and had one of the best libraries of all time, bar none, with a range of features and peripherals that no other console in history could touch. Now that could have been beyond special.
@BezBot The game on the Wii doesn't cost the full price, in the UK it costs £24.99 on Amazon whereas on Switch, PS4 and X1 it's £40
Important fact: No one cares
Maybe the casual audience does, but the mainstream market has stopped caring about the once great Just Dance. I agree that because of their new Just Dance Unlimited service they might have gone up a bit, but I doubt they'll go on. The casual audience will someday get bored of using their Wii and Ubisoft will lose a money printer then. All you can expect from Just Dance are casual targeted lame song picks like Despacito and no other indie music gets a time to be on the spotlight. Throw some light on the indie musicians and you money printer might last until about 2022.
@Yasaal True no one cares but with indie songs you can't dance to them, except bob your head or mosh, so there is no point as, unless you strap the controller to your head, it would not recognise the movement
It's official: Nintendo themselves should have "skipped Wii U" - a phrase we've been doomed to hear quite a lot on the site - and instead keeping the Wii around until the Switch.
Well, it's not "official", of course, mine was a very tongue in cheek comment, but at this point a frightening close-to-reality one at that.
The Wii train has no brakes!
@rjejr Not that it really makes a difference, but the game allows smartphones to be used as controllers.
@MsgBoardGamer Do even pretend you know what I can and cannot do. And don't pretend you know what would and would not have worked in a scenario you've never tested to know one way or another. Both just make you look like a tool who likes to pretend a lot and not a lot more.
@SDF "Not that it really makes a difference, but the game allows smartphones to be used as controllers."
You're right, it doesn't make a difference.
jk, thanks for the update, I forgot about that.
Personally I've never really seen Wii as a video game console nor Just Dance as a video game, they are arcade experiences in the home, like Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero, casual games on the TV. Wii is a Just Dance machine, so it makes sense it sells on there.
My theory is that the majority of the casual audience who keep this series alive aren't bothered about tech specs and HD visuals and just want a cheap experience. Also perhaps the Wii is left over from the console's high point impulse / hype purchases.
The Wii is the next Sega Master System in the UK. A system long dead but is still wildly popular there.
Oh boy, I finally have a reason to bust out my Wii.
@Hikingguy Because it's not "hardcore" doncha know.
I don't get it either. Popular culture is weird like that. It's ok to follow the herd so long as you follow the RIGHT herd.
@Hikingguy Agreed. I have two left feet.
@rjejr truly the Madden of dance games
People are probably wondering why the hell Ubisoft were releasing this game on the Wii. Here's your answer. It still makes them money. It's not for the likes of people who frequent comment sections like this to comprehend.
It'd be funny if it gets the 2019 edition as well.
@Hikingguy It's like if people in here try to comprehend Nintendogs on the DS a few years back. Just looked on their site, it sold 24 million units! Just goes to show you.
@rockodoodle The Wii version is the one that sold the most, not the one for the Wii U. Yes I am aware you can play your Wii games but why would you do that if you had a Wii U?
@tourjeff Just saw it at Best Buy while waiting in line for the Super Mario Odyssey launch for $60 on the Wii on Friday so I don't know if it was a mistake or that's the price of it in stores or whatever happened.
@Oat Don't think I've ever thought of it that way before, but you may have hit the nail on the head. Only I think more people would upgrade to a newer console for newer graphics for Madden than JD.
Still playing my Wii also.
Never played these games but I do love the visual presentation of their dance videos, the colours, the costumes, the good dancing and all the flashy bits, miles better than all the garbage music videos you see on the TV.
I mean, my 76 year old neighbor still uses her Wii for Netflix and her grandkids play games on it on the regular so I guess they have to be playing something. Why not Just Dance 2018?
So lame! All of it lol
@Bunkerneath Lol that's one way to look at it XD But that doesn't mean every indie song is like that.
@MsgBoardGamer "Sometimes I wonder if anyone here even goes outside."
I think it's clear from the posts some posters on here leave, that they don't. You get grown adults with the patience level and temperament of a four year old in here. You almost want to go round to their house and open their curtains and point to the outside world.
I will buy it on Wii U.
