Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

ToneDeath

Rush Rally 3 got me hungry for more even more rally gaming so I've been playing some of the original PS1 Colin McRae Rally (which is extremely impressive for its age) and downloaded the Switch version of V-Rally 4 as it's on sale.

Started V-Rally 4 handheld and my jaw dropped when I saw how rough it looked. It doesn't seem like a bad game per se, but Rush Rally 3, though less complex, is both easier on the eye and more fun to play.

@Brownmonster Cheers for getting the game out in time for Christmas; was one one of the best things about it this year, even if it was a present to myself!
Oh, and if you're not moving on from the game just yet, please consider adding some dlc cars such as the Ronald V, Perseus 1405, Lance Atmos and, erm...Toy Oat Celery and Cola?
I trust you'll come up with better names for them too

Re: EA Looking To Bring More Of Its Successful Games To Switch

ToneDeath

@glaemay What's sad is that EA is supposed to stand for "Electronic Arts" and early on their MO was to put the designers and programmers at the front and center of the work (I mean actual names on the front of the box!).

Anyhoo, Road Rash II would be nice on the Switch. M2 have done most of the work for them already in emulating it for the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini.

Re: Review: Contra Anniversary Collection - Run 'N Gun Perfection

ToneDeath

I hope the dot matrix effect and Super Game Boy colours M2 are using for their Game Boy emulations is a sign that they're working with Nintendo to bring the likes of Super Mario Land 2, Balloon Kid and Kirby's Dreamland to the Switch (this year would've been nice, but Nintendo don't always bother to capitalise on anniversaries).

Re: The First Of Konami's Anniversary Collections Lands On Switch Today

ToneDeath

I'm hearing that if you want to play the Japanese versions of these games, you'll have to buy the Japanese version of the collection. Western collection has the US versions, which even differ from some European versions apparently.
That makes it a bit less appealing to me, but if it at least has tate mode where applicable I'll consider it.

Re: Video: A Sega Genesis Controller On The Nintendo Switch

ToneDeath

@retro_player_22 I'm sure I heard somewhere you can switch between left stick and d-pad functionality by holding the start button for a few seconds. EDIT: Nope, I got that wrong. It was actually MetalJesusRocks talking about Retro-Bit's Sega pads. Oh well. I've seen comments elsewhere though saying 8bitdo will likely fix the issue with a firmware update anyway.

Re: N64 Classics Turok And Turok 2 Are Headed To Nintendo Switch

ToneDeath

I remember seeing Turok on the shelf in Woolworths priced at £70 (£125 today!). Most expensive I saw was WWF No Mercy at £80.

I didn't think much of the five minutes or so I played of the first one, but I've always been curious to see if the cerebral bore in Turok 2 is as awesome as N64 Magazine said. Might end up trying these two out then, and seeing if they work well with retro-bit's upcoming remake of the Hori 64 pad.

Re: Hardware Review: 8BitDo M30 - The Best Retro Controller On Switch

ToneDeath

Don't think this'll have the correct button layout for the Mega Drive/Genesis collection, which unfortunately doesn't let you make any changes. According to this write-up though the Street Fighters will be good to go, and I'm sure the Arcade Archives and Sega Ages series will let you make any changes you need (though the Sega Ages ones tend to use X as Start instead of +).

Re: Deals: Retro-Bit's Official Sega Saturn And Genesis Controllers Are Up For Pre-Order Now

ToneDeath

I'm hoping the USB version of the Saturn pad will work with the Switch, through an adapter if need be. If not, might get one anyway if it reviews well enough.

I'll keep an eye out for the McFerran analysis then...

@Gabriel87 I'm hoping it'll work with the Mayflash Magic-NS adapter, though there's a good chance the button assignment will be less than ideal. There's another, more expensive adapter that lets you reprogram these configurations, but even as a bit of a controller junkie I don't care enough to do that right now.

Re: Soapbox: My Love Affair With Tetris, Probably The Best Video Game Ever Created

ToneDeath

If Nintendo really adds a single-player endless mode to Tetris 99, they might want to give us some more music options while they're at it. The Game Boy tunes would be a nice novelty of course, but what I'm really after is as many tracks from The New Tetris as possible; I'll gladly pay for 'em if necessary (as long as the composer Neil Voss gets his share).

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

ToneDeath

Nintegrity.

Nintendo as a whole is obviously not perfect, but this is another example of why they're probably the best video game makers in the business. Certain other big companies would have just cancelled it outright, laid off the dev team for good measure and then start churning out yearly Mario Kart sequels and loot boxes for Splatoon and Animal Crossing.

Re: Reminder: SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Receives 11 Games As Free DLC Today

ToneDeath

@Moroboshi876 That's right, the borders are a plain silver with a green stripe running vertically each side. Not exciting but maybe the design is based on something relevant, so could be a nice detail I just don't appreciate yet. Also, soundtracks for the new games have not been added to the museum. They all have a 'watch' mode though and some have regional variations too.

My biggest complaint so far though is the game is still super prone to crashing when I'm simply navigating the menus.

Re: Hardware Review: 8BitDo GBros. Adapter - Use Your GameCube Pad Wirelessly With Smash Bros. Ultimate

ToneDeath

I'll probably get one of these to connect my Club Nintento SNES pad and NES Mini pad. I can do so with my Mayflash Magic-NS, but this adapter will make it a bit easier to do.

My obsession with using different controllers on the Switch has gotten out of hand though; today I got Hyperkin's "Duke" controller, based on the original monstrosity the Xbox used. I'd only held one briefly at a demo unit back in the day, and it's as awful as I remember. I think Iain Lee (of Channel 4's Thumb Bandits) described it as being 'designed by blind monkeys with no thumbs.'
I don't know what Switch games I'll want to play with it, but I couldn't help myself.

Re: Review: Horizon Chase Turbo - A Worthy Successor To Sega's Out Run

ToneDeath

There's a smidgen of a chance that the 3DS game 80's Overdrive might come to the Switch, which would be nice.
90's Super GP seems to be vapourware, but Racing Apex might actually happen. Then there's OutRun and Virtua Racing coming, and hopefully more Sega arcade racers besides those. I'd love to see another Namco Museum, this time representing the 90's with Ridge Racer included, and I know it'd be unprecedented, but getting to play Electronic Arts' Road Rash II on my Switch would be the cherry on top of a very good year for old school racing.

Re: Random: Super Mario 64's Main Menu Was Apparently Based On A Silicon Graphics Software Package

ToneDeath

Unlike the interactive Mario face, the menu would have become annoying pretty early on if not for the pleasant music. Plus they made it look Nintendo enough not to end up as dated and 'vaporwave' looking as the original. At least they didn't base it on the "it's a UNIX system!" 3D File System Navigator from Jurassic park (apparently an SGI thing also).

Different topic, but despite staring me in the face for two and a half decades, I only very recently realised that the 2D sprite graphics in the original Sonic the Hedgehog were designed to resemble the basic 3D computer generated imagery of the day. One look at the trees and checkerboard patterns in Green Hill Zone, and those 'polygonal' birds and fish in the background of the special stage make it kind of obvious. So in a way you could say the game was almost a forerunner to Donkey Kong Country, which used 2D sprites based on actual 3D computer generated models (SGI again!).

Re: Random: Nintendo Finally Confirms The Correct Pronunciation For 'NES'

ToneDeath

'Nez' never really worked for me, so I would have just called it 'the Nintendo' and later 'the original Nintendo.'
These days, having watched and read stuff on the internet for years it's 'en-e-ess' all the way.

As for the Super Nintendo, 'snez' just made sense in the UK of the early 90's for some reason. I'm reaching here, but I feel like maybe the Rave scene at the time might have influenced the way young people would make things sound cooler (slang) and would have filtered down to the playgrounds where you'd use anything to convince your friends that your Super Mario World was as cool as their Sonic. If you couldn't go with your older sibling to dance in a random field until either the sun comes up or the police shut it down, the next best thing would be having some mates round to play Mario Kart on the Snez while listening to that Ebeneezer Goode song you taped off the radio, right.

Re: Tiny Hands Adventure Aims To Give Yooka-Laylee A Run For Its 3D Platforming Money On Switch

ToneDeath

Something closer to Rex from Toy Story would probably work better; looking constantly nervous (if not terrified) would better sell the idea that the character feels inadequate due to his titular tiny hands.

If they're after a Rare feel (even though this looks more like Crash Bandicoot) another thing you could have are friendly NPCs who are weary of seeing the player character give up at every new hurdle because of their short arms, and try to remind you to just make the most of being a freakin' Tyrannosaur.

Re: Review: Iro Hero (Switch eShop)

ToneDeath

@Pahvi Thanks. Guess I'll just keep GRIDD on my watchlist for now, and if the @Shiryu review doesn't put me off completely I'll wait until a sale (or enough gold points) knocks it down to a fiver.

As for Iro Hero, it may have been a nice way to scratch that Ikaruga itch, but...oh well.

Re: Review: Iro Hero (Switch eShop)

ToneDeath

@Shiryu Will you be reviewing GRIDD next? I like the look (and sound!) of it, but in the footage I've seen it seems like it might be hard to control your ship precisely...
