Resident Evil 4 now glitches out for me a minute or two after loading my save. A youtube video of the same thing happening also shows several enemies onscreen causing major slowdown before the screen glitches out.
Seems then that the downside of trying to fix multiple games through changing the system firmware is that others that apparently worked fine before can get broken.
From what I remember seeing in a teardown of the Switch 2 Pro Controller it looked like Nintendo could have very easily made the part that in this case has the unique design on it a swappable faceplate, something they'd previously done with the Game Boy Micro and New Nintendo 3DS. I guess selling a product for £84 sounds a lot better to shareholders than say, £15 though (which is still a bit steep for a single piece of plastic).
I wonder if Nintendo would ever consider making their CRT filter (and perhaps their GB/GBA LCD filter) part of the system software to be used with ANY Switch 2 game, preferably with the ability to be toggled on or off through the quick menu you bring up by holding the home button.
While some retro and retro-styled games such as Capcom's compilations already have nice filter options, many are either really bad; reduce the brightness too much; are high quality but with an intimidating set of configuration tools or aren't there at all.
It might be nice then if we could make it look like nearly* ALL our retro games on the system are being played on the same CRT (*I doubt they'd include an additional vertical filter for tate games), see how modern pixel-art fares on old school displays or even just enjoy the novelty of slapping scanlines onto the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 or Mario Kart World if we fancy it.
Could be that younger and less experienced actors will be more likely to sign contracts that are less favourable to them compared to before the rise of AI tools. Fewer actual acting jobs as opposed to selling the rights to their voice to be copied from an initial performance.
After this system update I was able to start GRID Autosport while docked and connected to the Internet; up to now you had to launch the game in handheld and flight mode.
...Oh, and it looks like Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is now marked as supported and available for purchase on the Switch 2. That might have more to do with Capcom's own recent patch though.
Wasn't 2017 the only year where the Switch eShop had any kind of curation going on? Been a free-for-all since then and the store's getting to be a bit impenetrable. These days a game really needs to have an article about it catch my eye here, because I probably won't feel like scrolling sluggishly through the new releases every week.
My ideal live-action Resi film would be a sort of Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Alien (1979) meets The Silence of the Lambs and Prime Suspect (both 1991), or for something more fun and action-packed: Indiana Jones meets Night of the Living Dead.
I guess they can make everything as wacky as they want so long as they get Guybrush right. He needs to fit in with the world visually of course, but while being both just a bit at odds with it and a sort of down-to-earth, blank slate straight man the player can relate and project themselves onto.
With that as a base what will really bring the character and the game to life (we hope) is the quality of the writing, which if it's as deadpan as the original (the only one I've played) could potentially be made even more hilarious by how starkly it contrasts with the over-the-top environment.
This NSO version is the first I've played with noticeable slowdown. I've done one Death Race and the first cup so far (docked); some choppy stretches in all races but it tanked the hardest in one section of Big Blue. Even the old 50hz PAL version was smoother overall by virtue of being more consistent.
@Damo It could be that the memory has become exaggerated a bit, but I seem to recall seeing some pretty graphically violent fan art of Sonic and Mario in Sonic the Comic back in the day. If not the UK version, I might've seen it in an issue belonging to an American cousin, but either way...seems crazy now, printing stuff like that in a magazine for kids.
The way everyone's blanding their branding, Times Square, Piccadilly Circus and the Shibuya Crossing will soon look like a scene from They Live, only you won't need a pair of magic sunglasses to see it.
@Ganner I think it was most likely from a list of Kurt Cobain's favourite records in a magazine years ago.
Another (in)famous one, though it apparently took a lot of skill and months and months of practice to achieve: Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. https://youtu.be/aF0g-2SeoMM
I'm guilty of scrolling straight down to the 'Joys' and 'Cons' section...but when I read "Some of the music will make your ears vomit, which shouldn't even be possible" I could tell straight away this was a Scullion piece and I should take my eyes right back up to the top.
@ReikoMortis Noisy little fan, two left joy-cons with drift and light scratching on either side of the screen despite always docking carefully and using a carry case (Yeah, "should've used a screen protector," I know) and I get the impression all this isn't exactly uncommon.
All things are subject to wear and tear of course, but as great as it is the Switch is the first Nintendo device for which the term 'planned obsolescence' has come to mind...
@HaikuHiker I think that's it. It's drab. Let it be darker when the mood and atmosphere need it, but otherwise letting the colours 'pop' a bit more could make a world of difference. The colouring is leaning towards realistic where something a bit more 'idealistic' could make traversing the game world a much more enjoyable experience.
Or, they could just take a bit more inspiration from the colour scheme of the original versions. The almost turquoise green of the grass for example (aquamarine?). I think it could go over well at moment, post-vaporwave and with there being some 90s nostalgia-driven influence on pop culture going on (80s nostalgia STILL seems to be dominant though).
@VR32X Select a game, choose 'Start Game' then press + for the Game Menu. Go into 'Controller Settings' and scroll down to 'Insert Coin' which is assigned to the right stick press. Press ZL to erase the assignment, then press A and when 'Insert Coin' is highlighted by purple, press the button you'd like to use for that function. Press B, confirm the changes made are OK and it should save the settings. Press B again to return to the game and you should now be able to insert a coin with your chosen button (I tried it with L which is what I think the default is with Hamster's Arcade Archives series).
You'll need to change this setting for each game in the collection individually.
8 of the games I already have on the Switch in other collections, so that means for me it'll work out as 22 new games for about £1.36 each, plus 2 freebies. Still very cheap then, and though having some games on the same console twice rubs me the wrong way, I'll get over it.
Hopefully this is just the start and they'll add more titles (just not EVERYTHING else from the Street Fighter collection, for gawd sake!)
This does look very good, and though usually I'm happy to stick with download versions of "smaller" games, I'd be keen to get a physical copy with artwork like this:
My dream was to see M2 put together an "Astro City Collection" for the Switch, and for Sega to team up with a company like Hori to remake the Virtua Stick Pro.
This may scratch the candy cabinet itch anyway, but in the meantime I guess I'll just keep slotting my neon green and pink joycon onto the flip grip and keep dreaming.
@Angelic_Lapras_King It's there, and as you say a tad overpriced. Seems to be a bit of a trend with some of the more recent retro releases. Consequence of the Switch being a good market for them, maybe? At any rate, KOF '98 looks like even more of a bargain now.
Really, it's getting to play classic handheld games on the Switch which is the appeal of these Neo Geo Pocket games for me. Hope we get games (or collections) from the Game Boy, Game Gear, Atari Lynx etc...oh, and a new Game & Watch Gallery!
Last thought: Shame that Pocket Rumble never got an update to tweak the AI for people (like me) that are rubbish at fighting games but enjoy playing them sometimes anyway.
From what I have gathered, the option to rotate the image to play TATE style was in the Saturn version from the beginning (for those happy to flip their chunky CRT on its side I guess) and so that must be the same feature that has been retained for today.
The 'Arcade mode +' is TATE anyway, but for this it sounds like they have not added a screen rotation option.
A shame, as even the other platforms could use it (for those happy to flip their not-so-chunky LCD on its side). Not a deal breaker, but it does take a bit of value for money away from the full price, which is quite high compared to a standalone Arcade Archives or Psikyo release.
PS: The Vasara Collection is going for £1.79 on the eShop until the 14th of June.
@Damo Can the borders be turned off? and are there alternative designs? Also, TATE modes are mentioned but just to be sure, does that include Flip Grip-friendly screen rotation?
The lacking sense of speed compared to the 3DS version stood out to me immediately in the footage I've seen of this Switch version. The only real improvement I saw were some extra music tracks.
I was hoping for a long time to see this on the Switch, but I'm afraid it's one of those "wait for a sale" games now...
...unless I'm swayed by footage of the coming updated version YANDMAN speaks of above!
Have Activision published anything besides Crash, Spyro and Skylanders on the Switch? Maybe they see it as a kids console (even though a large part of their sales would likely have come from nostalgic adults).
I guess this is more of a reissue as I've had this on CD for years. Much more original music here than what got used in the actual game, and I think a lot of it is stronger than what we've heard in the recent Star Wars movies (Rey's theme is the only thing I could hum).
I think there was some CD-ROM content, as well as a decent booklet. Hopefully some of that is kept for this newer release.
As for the vinyl, as much as I like the music it's only the artwork that would tempt me to get it that way (The Empire Strikes Back is the only Star Wars on vinyl I'll ever need).
