Change the title to something like "Dr. Kawashima's New Super Fit Animal Recon Bros. & Sonic Wii" and bundle it with a Wii remote, and it might even do quite well.
Seriously though, I used to say that third party developers should put more effort into their Wii games, but when the combined sales of, say...HOTD: Overkill, Madworld and Dead Space Extraction probably don't even approach those of rubbish like Carnival Games, I just don't know anymore.
@Dragoon: Actually, I've been thinking for a while that a 2D crossover could be cool. The levels could be designed so that you can approach them differently depending on whether you play as Mario or Sonic. So while Mario might not be able to do spin attacks or get through loop-de-loops, he can go down pipes, use items like fire flowers and maybe even lift enemies like in SMB2.
As for Galaxy 2, I think it'd nice to see Nintendo show Sega how to make Sonic work in 3D. As long as it doesn't just feel like an update of the spheres game from Sonic & Knuckles.
As we haven't actually SEEN anything to do with this game yet, I'm expect that we'll probably get it in time for NEXT Christmas (2011). That is assuming it's being built from the ground up, and to compete with the likes of ALTTP, OOT & TP. And besides, if it came out this year, it would 'clash' with the already imminent Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M (to their minds at least).
So, is this just to keep the age rating at 3+? Does Super Mario Bros. 2 on the VC have a higher age rating? Because that has a slots game too, and so does Sonic 2 and probably many other games. Also, I know it shouldn't be a big deal in the 21st century, but it's nice to see there's a female writer here now
About bloomin' time, too. Maybe they'll go mental and throw the VC a bone? Super Mario Kart, perhaps? Would two racing games compliment eachother, or clash?
ONE new game for the Wii? We're gonna have a Friday where we nothing, aren't we. It is going to happen. This week they give us one solitary game, the next they don't give one solitary f***. Where's Super Mario Kart? Where's ExciteBike? And while I'm asking, where's ExciteBots?
I just hope they're not doing a Disney. Y'know, putting their best stuff in the 'vault' for years at a time. The Metroid Prime games are among the best ever, and should always be available. I guess a definite benefit of a download-only future in gaming is that at least re-releasing games is less hassle for publishers.
It'd be cool if Aardman did a claymation advert for a future Nintendo game, or even better a feature film. Their work appeals to young and old, just like the big N, and Gromit is proof that if anybody could do one of Ninty's numerous silent protagonists justice, it's them. So, what Nintendo game would you like to see up on the big screen, Chicken Run stylee? (my vote goes to StarFox/Lylat Wars)
I've already got their 'Health Food' shirt, and might pick up the Space Harrier tee, plus one or two Street Fighter tops one of these days aswell.
@ pHaT-aNt_ : Sure, what I'd really like are two with Greg the grim reaper, one saying 'I HATE CATS' and the other '7/10'. First 100 orders signed by Corbie.
Might try a demo of it if they do one, but doesn't look like I'll be buying it (should it turn up in Blighty, that is). Reminds me though, I'd like to see a new Elebits/Eledees game that fixes the originals flaws; Trashing your bedroom was great fun.
It was seeing my next-door neighbour playing the Snowspeeder level that made me want an N64. I got this as well as Mario 64. It was of course the latter game that was a much bigger 'moment' in gaming for me and everyone that played it, but Shadows stood up to it quite well at the time (though there was wasn't much else anyway). Then playing the Death Star level of Rogue Squadron II on an American cousin's Gamecube before the console was launched here got me super excited again. Got the game and console on launch day, along with Luigi's Mansion. Yeah, Nintendo's was good, but this time it was the Star Wars title that blew me away (with it's graphics and presentation at least) and still does today.
We didn't get ExciteBots here, but I hope that doesn't mean keeping the new ExciteBike from Europe too. Oh, and if you HAVE to release a solitary VC game, there must be something more worthy than mahjong, Shirley? What about some of those cool looking Namco arcade game Japan has been spoilt with, or how about throwing the N64 a bone?
"Belgian Waffle?" very clever pun there, funny too.
USELESS KNOWLEDGE: Back at school, I rewrote Hansel & Gretel as a horror story, gave it an abrupt ending that quoted Captain Beefheart, and called it 'Belgian Waffle Iron. '
Cool, but will we ever be rid of the TV licence? Anyway, to tie in with this I suggest a Top Gear special where they try to recreate a Mario Kart style race.
That's cool. I was actually a tiny bit disappointed they didn't do something like this for Galaxy's packaging, after Sunshine came in a purple case. A green 'Luigi edition' would have been nice too (Useless fact: Luigi is my middle name, no kidding). Also, instead of two Toads, it would've been nice to play as Peach, if only as a nod to SMB2, though you never know what secrets are hidden in there... @Chicken Brutus: You're dead right. @Gavin Rozee: I didn't know about that; mine was just in the standard black case. I guess these coloured cases must be a limited time thing, like gold Zelda cartridges.
Rare as it exists now is very different to the Rare of the N64 days. A lot of key staff have moved on to other things, and even the Stamper brothers left, didn't they? All I'm interested in is seeing more of their classics on the VC, which has never seemed likely.
There should be an option to turn the feature off completely, and/or some sort of reward for using it less. Still, although I had my doubts, this is starting to sound more and more like a good idea to me. Now players can see all of the game they've paid a hefty sum for, while for those that want it there's a bit of the challenge factor missing from too many games these days.
Games that seemed to be on autopilot was something to lament; now we have a game that IS on autopilot, and we can rejoice. Trust Nintendo.
Yeah, I couldn't get into Ngamer though. These days my daily fixes of videogame based reading consists of teletext's Gamecentral and Nintendo Life. Plus there's Retro Gamer, and I visit ScrewAttack.com quite often. And of course the latest Angry Video Game Nerd episode is always essential viewing.
Back to Wil Overton, is there no way he could defect to Nintendo? Or, in return for Nintendo Life plugging his comic, how about contributing a mascot to the site? Perhaps dust off ol' Worldy Bloke. What say you, FuSoYa?
N64 Magazine/NGC was and is still the best magazine I've read. I bought every issue from #18 (I think; it had Wipeout 64 on the cover, and I think I actually got it free with a game in Woolworths) to #100. Their reviews were ALWAYS spot-on in my opinion, and the magazine was often hilarious. The Overton cover I remember most was a Perfect Dark one, and also Worldy bloke who was always there until he was replaced by that bloody Enjiki. Oh, and does anyone remember Overton's alter ego FuSoYa? A sort of guru character with a cotton wool beard. And what about Dr.Kitts? Andrea Ball and her Big Stick? Jes Bickham as the bald one from Aqua? Good times, eh?
When I try to remember those old computers at school, I just end up thinking of the game at the start of 'Big' (1988) where the kid's trying to melt an ice wizard or something. I'm 21 now, so perhaps a little younger than you Dazza? Those machines must have been relics even by the time I saw them at school; I think I had a SNES around that time. I saw a littlle black computer that used tapes a few years later, just gathering dust in the back of a classroom. It blew my mind! I'd only known cartridges. CD's were just getting popular with the PlayStation, and I already thought of the floppy discs for my Amiga as weird. But tapes? No way. Anyway, once they got rid of anything resembling a game, the only fun I had on school computers was messing with the monitors ("ooh, green!"). Until we got the internet that is...
Continuing on from my previous comment (#25), by destroying BSL lab, along with all of the Metroid and X specimens and research, wouldn't Samus make an enemy of the Galactic Federation? So how about a game where Samus is a fugitive? This could lead to having to kill humans, which I'm sure Nintendo would rather avoid, so instead the GF could send alien bounty hunters after her. Meanwhile, Samus' exploration and adventuring would lead to her exposing the GF's schemes to the public, or putting a stop to them herself. The whole conspiracy could be the work of a corrupt branch or faction within the GF, so that your name is cleared at the end. Or, you remain a fugitive warrior which is even cooler.
There's no reason why they can't make more first-person Metroid games, they should just drop the 'Prime' title, as that story arc is done. Maybe continue where Fusion left off. Possible SPOILER here, but if my memory serves correctly, didn't Fusion have metroids towards the end? Sure, there were X parasites taking that form, but I seem to remember Metroids in tubes, as if they were being cloned by the humans. So unless I'm wrong, we shouldn't count the suckers out just yet (then again everything was blown up at the end, but why not pretend there were escape pods put to good use beforehand?).
Post-Wikipedia check EDIT: Ok, so the X couldn't mimic the Metroid, as the latter is the formers' predator, but there were Metroids being bred by the Galactic Federation. This would seem to contradict their sending Samus to SR388 to wipe the species out, but it seems they just wanted them all to themselves. They wanted to keep the X too, but knowing both species are too dangerous, Samus destroys everything.
Do we know who's developing this? My random guess would be Intelligent Systems, or maybe Treasure (though they should be busy with S&P 2). But surely everyone would like to see what happens when a shoot 'em up is given the Miyamoto touch; he, the modern Midas. (No, I haven't played Wii Music)
EDIT: According to the Kotaku article it seems to be a collaboration between Nintendo and Arika. Well, that certainly a change of pace from Endless Ocean.
I remember picking this up at a car-boot sale for less than a fiver, not really knowing what it was. It wasn't until I played OOT that I went back and tried to play LA properly. Unfortunately, towards the end I rendered myself unable to complete the game. I can't remember the details, but I had to trade an item for another, but I wanted the old one back (a shovel, I think). I somehow got it back, but when it came to collecting the next essential item, there was no room in my inventory, and apparently no way of making room. This was at one of the last dungeons, so it was quite frustrating and I haven't been back since. If anybody knows a way to get rid of the shovel a second time, I might give it another shot (if the internal battery hasn't died by now).
Surely Contra is too risky to play on a system that is easily thrown, say against a wall or into a river. Anyway, something I wanted to ask again:
Nintendo Life, will you review Balloon Kid (if you haven't already)? I only got to play the first couple of levels, but it struck me as a great expansion of the Balloon Trip* concept (* a bonus mode that was more fun than the main part of Balloon Fight).
I wonder what the loading times will be like. They were noticeably slower in 3, but not annoyingly so. I'd take those doors over watching a loading progress bar any day. I know it's a bargain, but I don't want anything to be inferior to the original versions.
Telltale: Have a look at Super Mario Galaxy, the real-time cutscenes in Resident Evil 4, heck, even Gamecube launch games Rogue Squadron II and Luigi's Mansion with their smooth, yet solid framerates and invisible load times.
All these were built from the ground up for the Nintendo systems they appeared on. Most consoles, past & present are capable of running games smoothly, it just takes developers that know what they're doing and are willing to put the work in. (sometimes publishers are to blame for demanding a simultaneous multi-platform release)
Shock Troopers (please...) King of Fighters '98 Shock Troopers (...pretty please...) The Last Blade and/or its' sequel ...but mainly Shock Troopers! (...with a cherry on top)
If some Neo Geo games are too big for the current limits, how about adding a big red warning sign that lets you know you're going to need more space than usual, and suggests taking advantage of the (relatively) recent addition of the SD Card Menu feature. Oh, and 480p@60hz instead of the dodgy PAL conversions wouldn't go amiss either. Just look at the VCA.
If it means a better product in the end, then this is actually good news. I should think this would have been Ubisoft's biggest Wii game for the Christmas period, so to delay it into next year shows there's some integrity there, which is great. Anyway, us Nintendo fans are a patient bunch, and Zelda fans especially know that a long wait is usually a good thing.* Just look at Goldeneye for the N64; it came two years after the film it was supposed to tie in with, but did that matter in the end? (Not only is it probably the best game based on a film, but surely the only one that is more popular and acclaimed than its' inspiration) Um, have I strayed from the point? Sorry...
*I don't know if this 'rule' will apply to Duke Nukem Forever.
I still just want the Amiga to show up on the VC, with The Secret of Monkey Island, Cannon Fodder...and Stunt Car Racer! If the C64 is on there then it's Shirley possible, right?
@Betagam7 After getting to play Sin & Punishment in 60hz AND pro-scan, it was disappointing to find that I had to play Gley Lancer in 50hz, and interlaced too (which is downright ugly on LCD TVs). Also, the earlier VC Mega Drive games haven't been updated to feature the A/V interlace mode(?), so because I use component cables, they can't be played on my TV at all.
Am I right in thinking that pretty much ALL VC games in the US can be played in progressive scan? If so, I'm officially jealous. If they could somehow update the PAL games to run 576p@60hz, all will be forgiven. It would make N64 games look especially awesome; the VC versions already boast noticeably higher resolutions than in their original forms. I thought 1080º Snowboarding in particular looks much better, unlike F-Zero X, which I swear has broken graphics; It stutters when loading tracks or different menu screens, seams are visible in the track surface and I swear the tunnel textures that are now a dull grey were once shiny and metallic.
MEGA DRIVE: Road Rash II Sonic 3 & Knuckles The Terminator Robocop vs. the Terminator Desert Strike
I'd like to see Amiga games on the VC, but failing that how about Cannon Fodder on the Mega Drive, and the Sega CD version of The Secret of Monkey Island (both with pointer support)?
@Clayfrd & boomface123 OK, so I'd say THESE Wii & DS games are the best in their series (Only franchises that preceded this generation, and no New Play Control): Mario Strikers Charged Football Super Smash Bros. Brawl Punch-Out!! Mario Kart DS
I haven't really decided whether I like Mario 64 or Galaxy better (I tend to think of the 2D Marios as a seperate series).
Unrelated perhaps, but I was watching the film 'Streets of Fire' with a friend earlier. Did you know it was a major influence on Final Fight, and possibly the whole beat-'em-up genre?
"As it stands today, Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart out there - 9/10"
Agreed! (EDIT: Probably wouldn't disagree with a 10 either) There aren't many other Nintendo games this generation that are the best in their series, are there?
I've got both, and am enjoying 'em very much. Cheers, SEGA. It's just a bit unfortunate that the best Wii games from SEGA tend to be merely published by the company and not developed in-house.
Anyway, how about getting Headstrong Games to give Virtua Cop the 'Grindhouse' treatment? They could maybe work in some Tron style elements to make the 'Virtua' part of the title make sense and keep it feeling retro. There should also be one or two car chase levels.

Cheeky gits...
Re: Big Nintendo News Incoming
Has anybody said Goldeneye yet?
Re: Big Nintendo News Incoming
I'd like Starfox and/or F-Zero for Wii, and maybe even Balloon Kid DS (though that wouldn't qualify as huge).
A safer bet though is Wiilax (Vitality sensor & Mii's).
Re: Ubisoft Bringing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to Wii
Change the title to something like "Dr. Kawashima's New Super Fit Animal Recon Bros. & Sonic Wii" and bundle it with a Wii remote, and it might even do quite well.

I just hope they're not doing a Disney. Y'know, putting their best stuff in the 'vault' for years at a time. The Metroid Prime games are among the best ever, and should always be available. ...but mainly Shock Troopers!
Re: Red Steel 2 Delayed Until 2010
Re: Interviews: Tales of Monkey Island - Telltale Games
I still just want the Amiga to show up on the VC, with The Secret of Monkey Island, Cannon Fodder...and Stunt Car Racer!
If the C64 is on there then it's Shirley possible, right?
Re: What Nintendo games do you want to see on the Virtual Console?
Donkey Kong (VCA)
Punch-Out!! (VCA)
Duck Hunt (NES)
Hogan's Alley (NES)
Wild Gunman (NES)
Balloon Kid (GB)
Kirby's Dreamland (GB)
Earthbound (SNES)
Starwing (SNES)
Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Pilotwings 64 (N64)
The New Tetris (N64)
Also, more third party N64 games please.
Re: Nintendo Download: MUSHA, Smash Table Tennis, My Life as a Darklord and Puzzle League (EU)
@Betagam7
After getting to play Sin & Punishment in 60hz AND pro-scan, it was disappointing to find that I had to play Gley Lancer in 50hz, and interlaced too (which is downright ugly on LCD TVs).
Re: What SEGA games do you want to see on the Virtual Console?
MASTER SYSTEM:
Jurassic Park
MEGA DRIVE:
Road Rash II
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
The Terminator
Robocop vs. the Terminator
Desert Strike
I'd like to see Amiga games on the VC, but failing that how about Cannon Fodder on the Mega Drive, and the Sega CD version of The Secret of Monkey Island (both with pointer support)?
Re: Review: Mario Kart DS (DS)
@Clayfrd & boomface123
OK, so I'd say THESE Wii & DS games are the best in their series (Only franchises that preceded this generation, and no New Play Control):
Mario Strikers Charged Football
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Punch-Out!!
Mario Kart DS
I haven't really decided whether I like Mario 64 or Galaxy better (I tend to think of the 2D Marios as a seperate series).
Re: The OFLC Rates More Capcom and Sega Classics for Virtual Console
Unrelated perhaps, but I was watching the film 'Streets of Fire' with a friend earlier. Did you know it was a major influence on Final Fight, and possibly the whole beat-'em-up genre?
Re: Review: Mario Kart DS (DS)
"As it stands today, Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart out there - 9/10"
Agreed! (EDIT: Probably wouldn't disagree with a 10 either)
There aren't many other Nintendo games this generation that are the best in their series, are there?
Re: Sega Not Giving Up On Mature Wii Titles Just Yet
I've got both, and am enjoying 'em very much. Cheers, SEGA. It's just a bit unfortunate that the best Wii games from SEGA tend to be merely published by the company and not developed in-house.
Anyway, how about getting Headstrong Games to give Virtua Cop the 'Grindhouse' treatment? They could maybe work in some Tron style elements to make the 'Virtua' part of the title make sense and keep it feeling retro. There should also be one or two car chase levels.
