Re: Video: Ten 3DS Exclusives That Could Be Better On Nintendo Switch

TheWingedAvenger

A few people want HD ports of certain games, but that's asking for too much. Nintendo won't make the terrible business move of releasing games to fans knowing that most of those fans have perfectly good versions of those games. Don't believe me? Then just look at the 3DS games that actually were ported to the Switch: Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, Minecraft, and Xenoblade. Notice that these games were unplayable on the normal 3DS, requiring a New 3DS, which only few people own. Nintendo know that no one would buy Super Mario 3D Land on the Switch, because Switch owners already have an excellent version of that game on their 3DS.

Re: Video: Ten 3DS Exclusives That Could Be Better On Nintendo Switch

TheWingedAvenger

It's completely pointless to port any 3DS game to the Switch because almost all Switch owners have a 3DS as well. They've released many games on both systems, and I haven't bought any of them twice. The New 2DS XL is an excellent handheld from just a few years ago, so I see no reason to port a game from that to the Switch. I'll always have my 3DS in my house. I wish they would port more Game Cube games to the Switch - now there's a console that I do not want to have taking up space in my house. It makes perfect sense for anyone who doesn't have a 3DS system to get the New 2DS XL, because it allows you to play tons of essential games.

Re: Feature: Why Zelda: Link’s Awakening Is Literally My Dream Game

TheWingedAvenger

The DX version for Game Boy Color is the best. Why one Earth would you play the black-and-white version if not out of nostalgia? This reminds me of all the psychopaths who play Phantasy Star on Nintendo Switch with the original American audio (which is so bad it might qualify as torture) instead of the Japanese audio which is now available to the entire world. The Japanese audio is the same compositions played through a far better FM sound chip. Nostalgia is stupid, sometimes.

As for the Switch remake of Link's Awakening, it's ugly and Link feels too slow. The GBC version actually looks better and plays better than the Switch version. I'll never understand why they remake games that were excellent to begin with. It's like remaking the Mona Lisa - what's the point? The games that need remakes are the ones whose quality was hampered by hardware limitations. Metroid II (Game Boy) comes to mind. The 3DS remake turned a bad game into a great game, because it got rid of the awful, game-breaking screen crunch and added color. It also makes sense to remake or port a game that was originally released on a console that no one owns anymore. Skyward Sword, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess come to mind. Only the geekiest people allow a Wii or a Game Cube to take up space in their house.

Re: Feature: A Link To The Past's Dark World Changed Zelda Forever

TheWingedAvenger

@GC-161
The first four Dragon Quest games were huge failures in America, so the SNES games (V and VI) were never translated for the American SNES. Final Fantasy (NES) was a decent success in America but the second and third games weren't translated for the American NES. I don't know what the Japanese version of Final Fantasy IV (SNES) was like, but the American version was far too easy. It's almost as easy as Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES.

Re: Feature: A Link To The Past's Dark World Changed Zelda Forever

TheWingedAvenger

The GBA version of this game is inferior to the SNES version, which is terribly flawed to begin with. The game wasn't made for such a small screen, and the screen crunch they implemented to compensate for it is pretty bad. Anyway, I consider this game to be the lowest point of the series apart from the weird DS titles and their awful stylus controls. A Link To The Past disappointed me greatly in that I beat the game in three or four days, a far cry from the entire month it took me to beat Zelda I and Zelda II each. It's sad that videogame executives during the late eighties and early nineties were caught between their belief that Americans weren't smart enough to beat their games and the fear that videogame rentals would make buying their games a thing of the past. So we got either ridiculously easy games such as A Link To The Past and Final Fantasy VI or ultra-hard games like Double Dragon III and Ninja Gaiden III. Luckily, some of these games have been hacked to make them better to play today.

Re: Review: Hellpoint - A Sci-Fi Soulslike Which Suffers From Hellish Technical Issues On Switch

TheWingedAvenger

I understand the development team is small and they have to juggle different versions of the game. So why didn't they wait two more months before releasing the Switch version? Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is coming out on Switch several months after the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Why have to endure the bad publicity of putting out a buggy version? I know why: there's no such thing as bad publicity. People know it'll get patched and so they hear about the game a few more times than they otherwise would have. The more times you hear a product mentioned, the more likely you are to buy it.

Re: Panzer Dragoon II Zwei: Remake Takes Flight This Year

TheWingedAvenger

Great news! I loved the remake of the first game, so I'll definitely be getting this one as well. It's great that people who never had a Sega Saturn can play some of its best games on the Switch. Sales figures show that almost no one had a Sega Saturn, so I'm sure these games will sell on the Switch.

Re: Feature: Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link Taught Me The Value Of Perseverance

TheWingedAvenger

@sixrings
I wasn't making fun of you with that comment, but sort of making fun of geeks in general - a category I put myself in - who somehow beat these hard NES games without any cheats. I actually couldn't agree more with your advice on how to play this game, namely trying over and over again until you really understand the fight mechanics. That's how I beat the game in 1989. The reason I would give people that advice is that the combat in this game is possibly the best I've seen on an 8-bit system. It truly is a sort of early Dark Souls, as Gavin here pointed out. There are different ways to fight as you improve your character's physical capabilities. I was initially put off by the poorly drawn overworld, as Gavin was, but I gave the game a free pass because the combat was fantastic, unlike anything I'd experienced. People who discard this game as an inferior entry in the series are missing out on a great title!

Re: Hamster Confirms Two More Coin-Op Classics For Its Arcade Archives Range On Switch

TheWingedAvenger

Wow, this a a great double announcement! I had never heard of the first game until I read this article, but it looks good from that video. I know Crime Fighters very well, as I played the arcade game a lot when I was a kid and I have it on my NES Classic Edition now. I'll be adding both of these games to my Switch very soon. Hamster has done well with this one-two punch!

Re: Try Not To Be Jealous, But Japan Is Getting An Exclusive Physical Edition Of Legend Of Mana

TheWingedAvenger

@KayFiOS
The GBC versions of the Dragon Warrior games are all watered down to make them beatable in a few hours without any challenge. The sound chip of the GBC is inferior to the that of the NES, so even that is worse. The NES games make you feel like you're a warrior on a dangerous quest, and are extremely satisfying. There's no point in worrying about translations, because the games have no written story. The story is in the actions that you decide to take. The ports eliminate the dangers and just go on autopilot. Boring.

Re: Try Not To Be Jealous, But Japan Is Getting An Exclusive Physical Edition Of Legend Of Mana

TheWingedAvenger

@echoplex
I sometimes hear stories of people playing these games with a friend or even multiple friends, and I find them hard to believe. I have friends, but how on Earth do people manage to find someone who likes nerdy adventure games, let alone someone who wants to play one in couch co-op? I can hardly name a person I know who has an interest in videogames beyond FP shooters.

Re: Try Not To Be Jealous, But Japan Is Getting An Exclusive Physical Edition Of Legend Of Mana

TheWingedAvenger

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but Legend of Mana isn't a good game. The only two good games in the Mana series are Final Fantasy Adventure on the Game Boy (although it had different names outside of the US), a nice Zelda clone, and Children of Mana on the DS, a fun action dungeon-crawler for people who like grinding for loot.

Secret of Mana (SNES), Trials of Mana (SNES, Switch), and Legend of Mana (PS1, Switch) all masquerade as action RPGs but unfortunately involve very little exploration and have the huge problem of making you fight with a bunch of hangers-on who are pointless and ruin the combat. In other words, your own characters are controlled by AI, and that is just bad for the gameplay. These games pretend to be Zelda but fail at that. Having a party of characters makes sense only in turn-based combat. There's a reason the best action RPGs all feature one protagonist: you should have control over all the protagonists, and since you can't control multiple characters at once in an action game, good action games have only one protagonist. See Zelda, Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, etc.

Re: SNK's First Season Pass 3 Fighter For Samurai Shodown Arrives This March

TheWingedAvenger

The companies who put out vintage re-releases don't seem to understand who their audience is. People over the age of 30 aren't interested in season passes, online gaming, and DLC. I don't even know what a season pass even is! Nor do I want to know, because I have enough games already. Don't bother me with all these complications. So, although I'm a huge fan of Phantasy Star I, II, III and IV, I have no interest in the online Phantasy Star game that was recently released on Switch. I have no clue why anyone would want to play videogames online with complete strangers, nor do I care to know. I know I'm not the only one who's like that.

Re: Feature: 8 NES Games That Were Better On Famicom Disk System

TheWingedAvenger

Actually all vintage games are better on the NES Classic Mini, where I always have save states. I also have the best version of each game. I have the hacked version of Castlevania II which removes most of the dreaded flaws of the game, and a hack of Gauntlet in which your health doesn't decrease like a countdown (a feature that made sense only in the arcades). Double Dragon III (NES) is a terrible game in its original state, but becomes a masterpiece in the hacked version. Games from the late 80s and early 90s were butchered because of the rental business which existed in many parts of the USA. Those games are void of fun unless hacked.

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Tops "Best Seller" Chart On Amazon, As Pre-Orders Sell Out

TheWingedAvenger

@COVIDberry
I just point out the fact that Xbox and PS fans enjoy simulated torture and murder; if they take offense, they're the source of the offense. In 2016, I walked into a videogame store called "Game Republic" in Moscow and asked the shopkeeper why he had 98% Xbox and PS games, and only a handful of Nintendo games (3DS only). He told me that Nintendo wasn't a thing in Russia, so I asked him why Russians only liked games where they brutally slaughter and kill people. He was befuddled. I told him I saw enough violence on the news every day and was interested in games like Mario and Zelda. Next time I went there, he recognized me and told me the Nintendo Switch would be released soon. It's now a 50% Nintendo store!

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Tops "Best Seller" Chart On Amazon, As Pre-Orders Sell Out

TheWingedAvenger

The beauty of living in Moscow is that Switch cartridges are always in stock and easy to find. Russians have zero taste in videogames, so they ignore Nintendo and leave all the good stuff to me. They only buy videogames in which you get to slice body parts off, burn people alive with a flamethrower, or shoot them to a bloody pulp with a kalashnikov. I often advise them to see a good psychiatrist, but they always get offended and threaten bloody revenge.

I can't wait until tomorrow!!!! I need to know earlier!!!!

I'm going to fly to Japan, sneak into Nintendo's headquarters, take all the info and divulge it hours before it is officially released. Then all of you mere humans will be jealous of me, the Winged Avenger! Wuahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

Re: Video: 11 Great 3DS Games Overshadowed By The Nintendo Switch

TheWingedAvenger

@BulbasaurusRex
The GBA screen was the same height as the GB screen, which is too small. That's why so many developers made games with screen crunch. Compare Metroid II (GB) to Metroid (NES), Gunstar Superheroes (GBA) to Gunstar Heroes (SMD). I'd rather play a normal-size game than a screen-crunch one, because I want to see a lot of what's around my character. On the PSP and 3DS XL, you could finally play normal-size games on a handheld.

Re: Video: 11 Great 3DS Games Overshadowed By The Nintendo Switch

TheWingedAvenger

I don't mean to overshadow the 3DS, but I think the 3DS is the second best handheld of all time, after the Switch Lite.

1. Switch Lite
2. 3DS XL
3. PSP

I'm not a fan of any other portable system mainly because they all have tiny screens and most aren't even backlit. The PSP was the first handheld that had a big enough backlit screen and great games. The 3DS XL has a slightly bigger screen and better games. The Switch Lite has an even bigger screen and an even better game library.

Re: Select Arcade Archives Games Are Currently On Sale On The Switch eShop

TheWingedAvenger

@Bydlak
I was lucky enough to discover it in my local arcade. I looked at it and I just had to play it because I'd never seen anything like it. It was fantastic but really hard, and as a little boy I couldn't get far. When I saw the NES cartridge about a year later, I bought it and beat it - hard but it can be done. The ZX Spectrum version was a far inferior port.

Re: Select Arcade Archives Games Are Currently On Sale On The Switch eShop

TheWingedAvenger

Renegade is the first beat-'em-up ever, and it's also a ton of fun. Double Dragon is the second, and it's even more fun!

When I say "beat-'em-up", I mean a game where you beat enemies up and it takes more than one hit to kill each one. If a game has one-hit kills, like Kung Fu Master, Vigilante and Bad Dudes, then it's a sidescrolling action game, not a beat-'em-up.
