Re: Baldo: The Guardian Owls Gets Gorgeous New Footage, Still Slated For Switch 'Soon'

TheWingedAvenger

@Perryg92
I'm fluent in Italian, and for all intents and purposes "Baldo" means nothing in that language. Now, I checked in a dictionary just to make sure I wasn't lying to you, and, lo and behold, there does exist an obscure word "baldo" which supposedly means "bold". The problem is that 99% of Italians don't know it. If you go to the WordReference site, write the English word "bold" and search for a translation into Italian, you won't get the word "baldo" at all. You'll get a dozen other Italian words instead. Baldo sounds just as corny in Italian as it does in English. It sounds like the obscure Italian name Ubaldo, which makes it even weirder. I hope the devs ask ONE of their friends or family members to give them an honest opinion of the name Baldo, because it just objectively sucks.

Pinball videogames suck when they put an entire realistic-looking table on screen at once. The screen is cluttered and gives you a tilted perspective that feels like a stupid compromise. It's like playing 22-man soccer on an 11-man field. Star Wars Pinball does move the camera up and down, but that perspective isn't ideal - the camera should be top-down, as in A Link to the Past. The way to put an entire table on screen at once is to tailor-make the table for a videogame experience, such as Midnight Magic on the Atari 2600. That's a decent compromise, and the camera perspective is the best possible.

Compare the mediocre Star Wars Pinball to Devil's Crush and Alien Crush on the TurboGrafx-16; the latter two show you half the table at a time, but do a great job of transitioning. You actually have a good, straight-on view of what's happening in those games.

But the very best pinball videogame by far is Metroid Pinball for the DS. You have the entire pinball table visible at once, but with no compromise, as the DS and 3DS have two screens, one on top of the other. It puzzles me that only one developer had the ingenious idea to make a pinball game for the DS, and that no one made one for the 3DS. If you play Metroid Pinball on a 3DS XL, you'll agree that it's the best pinball experience in videogames.

Re: Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin To Bring Revamped Combat And Familiar Characters

@Rosona
The combat in Fire Emblem isn't rock/paper/scissors, because you know beforehand what your enemy has. When you play rock/paper/scissors, you don't have any foreknowledge of which of the three your opponent is going to show.
In other words, rock/paper/scissors (as in Monster Hunter Stories) is a mindless game of chance, whereas Fire Emblem requires that you use your brain to win.

I also love going into a store and buying a nice Bluray, book or CD. I like having stuff like that on display in the living room. I choose them carefully, and limit them to the very best. I want my living room to look like a living room, and not a storage facility. When I go to someone's house and see a room full of movies, for example, I understand that they have an addiction to physical stuff. It's about possession. They think they "own" the movie if they have it on a circular disc. If it's on a hard disk, it doesn't count. They need to see a physical representation of the movie every time they walk into the room. They need that psychological fix on a regular basis, just like a cocaine-addict needs to sniff every other day. Owning all those Hollywood productions makes them feel like they're on top of the world.

You're right about N64 emulation being bad, but you can play the top ten N64 games without emulation and without using original hardware. All you need is a Nintendo Switch and a 3DS.

Super Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Diddy Kong Racing
Doom 64
Star Fox 64
Star Wars Pod Racer
Turok
Turok II
Shadow Man
Rayman 2
Mario Kart 64
Ridge Racer 64

All of these N64 games can be played on a 3DS or a Switch in improved versions.

In fact, if you have a Switch, a 3DS, and a PSP, you can play all the best games in the history of gaming without any need for another console. Don't tell cartridge-hoarders that, though, as they feel offended by it.

@AndyC_MK @Whitestrider
When I called cartridge-collectors hoarders, I knew it might be offensive, but I used to be a CD addict and I wish someone had called me an addict back then, because I collected over 500 CDs before I realized I was addicted to the physical media more than to the music itself, much of which I didn't even listen to.

Comic books are a bit different, because you can't get those in digital format. It's easiest to detect an addiction to physical media when it regards videogames, music, literature and movies, because all those can be had in digital format (much of it free) without taking up entire rooms in the house.

I think physical media give us a sense of immortality, because when you walk into a room and see hundreds of books, CDs, DVDs and cartridges, the implication is that it would take several lifetimes to consume all of it, and you sort of feel like a god. That's how I felt. I've stopped deluding myself.

Re: Video: 11 Exciting New Games Coming To Nintendo Switch In April

TheWingedAvenger

Battle Axe looks like a masterpiece, and it's in a genre that doesn't have much competition. I guess you could call it the Gauntlet genre. I'm definitely getting that on April 16th.

Republic Commando is a great game so I'll be buying that too. On April 16th, because I'm in a backward country where games come out late (when they come out at all).
