At Blizzard's all-digital BlizzCon event this year, the company announced Diablo II: Resurrected for the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms. It'll be arriving later this year.
The remaster of this classic ARPG hack 'n slash will include the ability to toggle between new and old graphics, the same gameplay "you know and love, preserved), new audio, and will support cross-progression.
Both the base game and expansion (The Lord of Destruction) are included in this package. In addition to this, there are revamped ladder seasons, a redesigned user interface, and an expanded stash. Each game will also support up to eight players, with each player given access to one mercenary.
"Diablo II: Resurrected includes all content from both Diablo II and its epic expansion Diablo II: Lord of Destruction®. Battle your way through icy caverns, horrific tombs filled with undead abominations, and frozen wastelands to the frigid summit of Mount Arreat and stop Baal, the Lord of Destruction. Raise hell with two Lord of Destruction playable classes—the cunning Assassin, master of traps and shadow disciplines, and the savage Druid, a bold shapeshifter and summoner who commands primal elemental magic."
Will you be returning to Hell when Diablo II: Ressurrected arrives on the Nintendo Switch later this year? Comment down below.

I got summoned here by @Liam_Doolan.
But with cross progression. That is biiiig!
I’m in....uhhhhhh....where do I sign my life away?
Wasn't much for Diablo III, but II was a classic. I'll probably be getting this.
diablo 3 must have sold enough for them on switch then...
Cool, I always wanted to try this darker looking Diablo.
Please just be the original in HD, if they so much as meddle with the music, ambiance or art design then it's all for nothing.
@Ralizah Agree totally, loved 2 but something always felt a little off about 3
I literally just asked for that in the Blizzard Arcade thread LOL
PLEASE BE GOOD
NINJA APPROVED
This is amazing!
I hope the don't mess.it up like the Warcraft III remaster.
Please don't screw this up like Warcraft III Reforged I swear Diablo II is a goated game
‘Don’t you guys have cell phones?’
@SpaceboyScreams 100% agreed with you, but I know this company, and I’m 99% certain they will screw it up.
I hope to get proven wrong!
I still have a nice, shiny (slightly modded) version running on my PC, so there is that at least.
NINJA APPROVED
Oh wow, another great game for the switch. I have nevered played this game. hope it is good .
I will be all over this.
YESSSS! One of the best rpgs of all time.
@michellelynn0976 Diablo II is incredible. I’ve literally been playing the original on and off since it’s launch, and it was the reason I built my first gaming PC back in the day.
This remaster though, hopefully they don’t mess it up. Diablo II has A LOT going for it in terms of sound and atmosphere. If they make it look like Disney’s Diablo 3, then I will be disappointed.
NINJA APPROVED
***** YESS!!!!! I WANTED THIS SO BAD!!!
I guess Charles H. Duell was right all along.
@BloodNinja The atmosphere (or lack thereof) was the biggest issue I had with Diablo 3. That dark and evil feel was gone, which is the biggest draw of Diablo over other dungeon crawlers, IMO.
Actually? It looks pretty good!!

NINJA APPROVED (so far)
@Ralizah Diablo 3 is Diablo by Disney. Plus how can you go from the masterfully crafted skill tree system in Diablo 2 to whatever they did in 3? That thing was pure garbage. Zero approval.
Holy..... my pants just tightened a bit. This is so effin awesome! I spent YEARS playing this. Was even around when JEDI was created, and eventually banned via the Guardian program running in the background.
JEDI - JavaScript Enabled Diablo Interface, allowed players to map out a route, and auto run it for farming purposes. Pindleskin, Nithalak, and Baal were top targets. Just set it and forget it, come back hours later to a stash full of Windowforce bows, Grandfather colossus blades, etc....
Edit - Since it has cross play, I’ll likely double dip on this with a Switch version and either Series X or Ps5 for playin with non-switch friends. That cross play inclusion is amazing by itself, especially for any Switch owners.... take your game with ya, progress, then move the progress over.
Oh snap!!!
@BloodNinja
This version of Diablo II was made by the same folks who handled Warcraft III Reforged. The worst reviewed game in Blizzard's history. I'm worried they've butchered another classic. Hopeful Activsion moved Vicarious Visions over to this game in time to save it.
Already better than Nintendo Direct this is going to be sick.
Bliz putting the Switch logo first! At least someone recognises what's going on lol.
@Magician I am 100% on board with your concern. The video put my concerns, partially, to rest.
https://youtu.be/DRP62MGOrUo
Hopefully they used Warcraft 3 as a learning experience.
NINJA APPROVED
@BloodNinja LMAOOOO I was gonna @ you here if you weren’t already in
The original one is a little too dated for me and Diablo III is alright but not great. Hopefully I’ll get into this one as I never have played it.
I'll get it if it's not more than 30 bucks.
From a technical stance, this is insane. The original game was made to run at a baseline 25FPS, so in order to remake it they need to write all the code again from scratch.
NINJA APPROVED
nice. playing d2 again on the switch is a dream come true. back in the days there were d2 clans, with actual websites. i loved it, my parents... not so much. now i am free!
and d3 is not bad (after some updates), too many people trying to be cool here.
@GannonBanned Looks like my luck might be turning around hahaha!!!

I'm happy for those who wish to play this on the Switch.
For my part, the name "Blizzard" makes me think of Hong Kong and Blitzchung. Down with Blizzard!
The Nintendo Direct leaker was right again!
I really love Diablo 2, one of my all-time favorite games.
But then again Blizzard today is a joke, they have butchered about every franchise they have left.
Only getting this if it reviews well.
It needed updated graphics but I dunno if they quite got it right or not. Hopefully it'll be better than that dumpster fire of broken promises Warcraft III Reforged.
Wow, another great game coming to Switch! Diablo 2 is a classic, I´m glad it´s getting another chance.
There will be no many Nintendo games this year, apparently, but we´ll have more and better third party support than ever before lol
I liked Diablo III and understand that most fans thinks II is better, so I'm definitely interested in this!
Sorry for spamming the thread, I’m actually letting myself get excited for this.
But what? You can TOGGLE the graphics? They did that in R-Type Dimensions and that was a cool effect.
Wow, sorry Mitch, your article on hype can take a hike. I’m gonna get hyped LOL
NINJA APPROVED
I nearly passed out from the nostalgia hit.
This is looking pretty great, definitely interested in getting this one on Switch, depending on performance.
Oh, sweet Jesus!
“I am overburdened.”
I want that on my gravestone! Heh. This is exciting!
Hell yes! I can spawn MINIONS!!!
@Juga Oh, I apologize. I’m not trying to yuck your yum, but literally zero of those games in the list you shared interest me. I recognize that it’s a matter of taste, none of those are for me. I do hope you find enjoyment with some of those!
NINJA APPROVED
Played it until vomit back in the day. Will dip in again. That means, if it isn't DIABLO II Refunded all over again...
Hmm. D3 was the only game in the series I ever played, and I really enjoyed it, so this intrigues me.
I sunk too much of my life into this game lol. Never again
@Juga That would be amazing for the people who enjoy that game! I hope they release it for the folks that want it!
NINJA APPROVED
Oh my science. How I've longed for this moment.
Hmm, doesn't appear as though they are changing the end game. That's a shame. I love d2 and will definitely buy this but endless baal runs just to get to ubers is something I hoped they would change.
My interest in this depends on whether they rebalance runewords or not. If they're still an unbelievable grind, hard pass. That ate enough of my life the first time around.
Not for me thanks. I bought diablo 3 and, for me, is the most boring game ever
I’ve played through it several times on PC but I will double dip.
Like D3, will it also have a tiny unreadable UI in handheld, without any way to upscale it?
I loved the original Diablo but never got a chance to play Diablo 2. WILL BUY!!!!!!
Fire Sorc!!!
There goes my life.
@Auenegheps Everyone who loves Diablo 2 hates Diablo 3. 3 was a step backwards in every regards that 2 was. Just saying, they are worlds apart, from gameplay to atmosphere, so you may be surprised and actually enjoy it. Keep any eye on it, if you want
NINJA APPROVED
!!!! One of my first ever PC games. Not played it since last week. Can. Not. Wait. 🥳🥳🥳
Edit: And with original graphics option. 😍😍😍
Woohooooo. This is so cool 😎
I was waiting for the magic word: toggle. For someone who missed a lot of these classic games, having the option to experience the original visuals and sound is a must for me. I know it's not possible for all remakes since there's a lot going on under the hood that needs to be synchronized, but I still wish more companies would include the originals in these remasters, even if it's just dropping a ROM into the game menu. If you can have cross progression across consoles and PC, why not cross progression between your remake and an original release version?
Trailer looks good. Never played D2, but it's a classic so nice to see added to the list of classics on Switch. I'll probably wait for word-of-mouth from players before buying, but fingers crossed.
shut up and take our souls!
@BoilerBroJoe I share your sentiments! It's like when Metroid Zero Mission had the original Metroid as a treat for beating the game, why they don't do stuff like that in every remake/re-release is beyond me.
As for the cross saves, from my minimal experience learning C++ it would probably be some kind of technical nightmare. They are already having to write the new game from scratch, because simply porting the old code wouldn't enable them to do things like the toggle, so I would imagine that also adding legacy save game crossover support would just be techno-wizardry, or not possible.
NINJA APPROVED
Aw snap ninjas!!!
@Northwind Diablo 3 had a rough launch and I think a lot of people never forgave it. Honestly current d3 is pretty good, and while I think d2 still did some things better, when it comes to end game d3 is much more satisfying. Not a fan of endless baal runs, ubers and ridiculous farming for runewords
This is amazing, I was always disappointed that the original version never got ported to consoles. This personally makes up for any disappointment I had with the direct. Also, glad to not see "arriving in 2022".
Just finished Reign of Terror mod in Grim Dawn. A super Diablo 2 + Lord of Terror mod. Bringing back so much memory. Will definitely get this day 1.
This is the game that got me into western RPGs and PC gaming in general. Will get day one for sure.
My favorite builds was the zealot paladin and hammerdin. I hope they fixed the shared loot drop based system. Clicking aimlessly to pick up the best loot after killing a boss in hopes that you clicked faster then the other guy is not fun.
Yesssssas! Hell yes!
Did someone else notice the poor frame rate in some of the particle explosions? If that's how it will be on PC, I am kinda worried as of now even more for the Switch version...
My builds in Diablo II were always very particle heavy. Hope they figure it out before launch.
Sweet Jebus...please tell my OCD Diablo 1 and 4 is gonna come to Switch too.
3rd game I'm buying today. Gotta watch my spendings though lol
While I enjoyed Diablo 3 on the Switch, it's refreshing to hear the old gameplay is making a comeback
Day one buy for me
@BloodNinja I think I may not have explained properly - I didn't mean cross-saving with the old releases themselves. I'm talking about including the original as an option (a la Metroid Zero) and then having your save data work in both versions. But it would all still be within the new release.
Lets take a simple game like Link's Awakening on Switch, for example. If they had the option in the main menu to play either the remake or a ROM of the Gameboy/Gameboy Color version, the only info that would need to be transferable would be your items, the number of rupees/hearts you currently have, and your coordinates on the game map (not sure if puzzles reset or not - it's been a while since I've played, but you get the idea) My point is, even if you're not trying to seamlessly toggle between two versions of the game instantaneously, it should be possible to "link" save data and then have your save file for one update each time the other is changed (if you so choose). For more complex RPGs it might get tougher, especially since lots of remakes involve re-balanced stats and whatnot. But even in some of those cases, it may be more a matter of how "fair" the developer wants you to play; ie. going into a simpler version of a game and scoring items that were redesigned to be less accessible.
Anyway, I'm no game design genius, but I can't imagine it's impossible in every instance, and I'd love to see it tried. But toggling, which almost certainly requires a ground-up redesign like you say - is arguably better, and I'm glad Diablo II is doing it.
@BoilerBroJoe That makes sense! I'm still in agreement with you, either way. While I loved the remake for Link's Awakening, a part of me was disappointed that they didn't throw in a darned GBC rom. It would have been EZ.
We give these companies so much attention and so much money, asking for a rom seems silly, they just should.

@BloodNinja now that you’ve spoken it into existence can you please ask for a new F-Zero or Pikmin 4? Please and thank you.
I love ARPGs, but much prefer the aesthetic of Torchlight to Diablo III. D3 is too grimdark for me and I've heard this game is far edgier. Is it still worth considering this?
We already had Diablo 3.
Now we have Diablo 2.
I'm expecting this one to be a million seller... who knows, maybe we'll get Diablo 1 next year.
@Sourcecode I'm on it!

@Magician Dangit don’t tell us that. Welp let me go find cracks to my diablo games ...
I’m still livid that you can’t legally play warcraft 3 anymore. Only reforged. Even if you bought 3.
Much less enthusiastic now.
where is the first diablo ?
@talllennart Probably in 2023 it will be released as a Nintendo Switch "DOS Port" exclusive. For 60 dollars.
Day one buy for sure, love this game back in the days. Would definitely get this remastered for Switch and GPD Win 3.
I am already filing a class action lawsuit. You cannot do this to me again Blizzard! I have a wife and kids now....and it is on a handheld.
@NinjaWaddleDee You're in luck.
Diablo II Resurrected costs $40 not $30.
Wow, that trailer looked amazing! I've never played Diablo, but this looks dark. This should've been in the Direct, it would've been a huge highlight.
@SpaceboyScreams As to my understanding, Diablo 2: LoD is literally running under the new graphics which serve as an overlay. While I believe it was said that PC users can switch back to the old graphics, I cannot say the same for the Switch.
Diablo 2 was a great PC game. It will be interesting to see how it plays on a nintendo switch.
I have never played Diablo 2, and always heard it was fantastic... So I'm very interested.
Will await reviews and make sure they didn’t mess it up. Hope its physical if its good.
And here I thought getting Neverwinter Nights on Switch was a wow. This year's release calendar is getting more insane by the week.
If I didn't put thousands of hours into this game when I was a kid, I would totally be down for this!
@BloodNinja wow, a real ninja. Well, it's better to not try it for me. What if I buy it and it's boring? 60€ waste for the second time😖
I just want it now. With Covid & continous lockdowns this is all I need to feel it's ok not having a life.
@BloodNinja
I want all the Wave Races plus a new Wave Race MMO. Plz. Ty. 😗
@Fandabidozi LOL
I hope Nintendo is listening to this!
WE GOT A REQUEST FOR WAVE RACE PEOPLE
Did you say Wave Race MMO? That’s freaking brilliant, I would play that!!

I played Diablo and Diablo II a very long time ago. And I bought Diablo III awhile ago when it was on sale, but didn't have the chance to play it yet. I keep hearing that these specific developers butchered Warcraft 3 Reforged (never played it), so I'll be cautious about buying Diablo II. Let's hope it's great.
can't wait. hoping they don't pull a warcraft 3 remaster
I didn't see this coming, but I totally loved Diablo II.
I wonder if this will also contain some mods, like the Doom 1 port did.
Only thing I'm mad at, is I have to buy it twice.
Omg. How awesome.
I enjoyed diablo 3 so I am somewhat interested in this.
@BloodNinja Yo. Destructoid has an interview with one of the devs of this. Confirms offline, and that its a full remake. Good read. Oh snap, Eurogamer has a better one too!
The main question for me: Will it run with 60 fps in handheld?
I know it's ironic to point this out on a Nintendo site, but Blizzard really seems to be stuck in "reliving past glory" mode.
I'm one of the few that preferred Diablo I over II. I havent replayed II for a long time but it looks like a remaster with updated 3d models not a remake right? I would prefer the later
So Diablo 4 2025?
@Casual_Gamer95 Diablo III on Switch is a damn slick port and still get content updates like other systems.
Switch version is on par with any other version as of 2021.
@BloodNinja sorry I gotta ask with "NINJA APPROVED" are you saying that you approve of your own ideas and comments?
@Magician not entirely accurate, they disbanded the WC3 Reforged team, and the staff from that has been allocated to our parts of the company. It might have some people who worked on WC3 Reforged but not all of them (Thank god LOL)
@Max_the_German As it's the same exact engine as 20 years ago it runs at 25 fps for the character models, but they added a new 3d engine on top for all of the effects, It's not really a quick paced game like Diablo 3, hopefully it will run at a native 720 in Handheld and 1080p docked
Goodbye Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal? Hopefully they won't release in the same month...
Diablo is a great game to play on the go. Perfect match for Switch.
@Nico85 It kinda depends on the context. Most of the time I’m approving the idea, or approving what I’m replying to. Sometimes I’m approving my own comment. It’s ok to do that, in life. Like the idea of Diablo 2?
NINJA APPROVED
@PhilKenSebben I don’t know why you chose to tell me this, but I’m very happy that you did. My one worry was forced online, so thanks for laying that to rest for me.
NINJA APPROVED
@BloodNinja Saw how you talked about the game. Saw it meant a lot to ya, wanted to pass on more info to a fellow fan. Glad you got some peace from it, as I did.
@PhilKenSebben Much appreciated! Even the slightest bit of good news is great right now LOL
Have a great day!
NINJA APPROVED
@dojmin Luckily the team responsible for warcraft 3 reforged got canned and put on other projects. The team working on this remake is Vicarious Visions, the same people responsible for the crash trilogy and Tony hawk remakes; a team that actually knows what they're doing.
Alright Blizzard.
I'm listening.
@Casual_Gamer95 yeah this along with Skyrim and The Witcher 3 probably did sell quite well, hence why we've had continuous support from both developers behind both games, unfortunately CDPR doesn't have as much to offer as the other two. We also got Overwatch from Blizzard too.
I'd actually venture to guess that Diablo 3, Skyrim and The Witcher 3 are low key the best selling 3rd party ports on the Switch. We know that The Witcher 3 sold 750k copies within 3 months of being on the Switch, that was before that pandemic and we've not had numbers since but I'd guess it'll be well over 2m by now.
Both Skyrim and Diablo 3 more than likely have more.
Awesome to see a PC classic get a remaster for all audiences to enjoy. I never played this originally, but I really enjoyed Diablo 3 on Switch, really excited to check this out. I'm not too worried about the quality of this remaster either, VV did great work with the Crash N Sane trilogy.
Are there any games like D1 and D2 that aren't hack and slash? I loved the story and atmosphere of those games but not the endless hoards of monsters and mouse clicking.
Never played Diablo 2, but I know Marvel Heroes was made by the creator of D2 and I loved that game. For those who experienced the old great, will it be enough to scratch that Marvel Heroes itch?
If anyone is on the fence about D2, don't be. It's 1000 times better than Diablo 3 ever was. I played SO MUCH D2 back in High School, and it completely consumed me lol. I played probably thousands of hours on the original d2, but, D3 NEVER had that amazing "It" factor that D2 did. D3 was a totally different game than D2 was, and it definitely showed. I'm so excited for this D2 remake that I can't wait for it to be released! Hopefully it'll be out over the summer or early Fall 2021. : )
Looking forward to this bad boy! Woo
ITSLUKEC APPROVED
@VR32X me too. Physical is key. I like the convenience of digital, but without physical copy it’s a no go. Can’t believe no websites have confirmed if it’s physical release or not.
Does anyone know if this will be released with a physical copy? I also have the same question for Ninja Gaiden Master Collection
Assuming they don’t butcher it (let’s be real they will), I’ll pick this up for PC.
D.I.C.E. gave it Game of the Year 20 years ago. Worth a look!
@lovesushi only problem my parents had was when I tried sneaking in middle of the night to play but dial up modem had other plans.
@My_ultimate_is_ready oh yes! i did that too but i wrapped some towels around our modem. i felt a little guilty but i thought it was worth it. crazy times...
Hmm. Just saw that this will be released at a budget price. Makes me doubt we're getting physical. On the other hand, this will be a much easier pill to swallow when I buy both the PC and switch versions.
Never finished the original. I remember feeling fatigued and that it never ended. Got as far as these catwalks in a space-magic looking area.
For those who haven’t watched the Deep Dive video, it is very interesting.
@Trajan I doubt they will butcher it, as it is just the original game running under a visual layer with some QoL tweaks. They are also adding some more ambient sounds and remastering the audio and cinematics.
@LUIGITORNADO Sounds like you made it part way through the second of five acts. This game caters to those who enjoy a good grind and repeating game areas over and over. You were maybe 30% through the lowest (of three) difficulty.
This is fantastic news, since Diablo II is the best game in the trilogy. I love the first and third, but Diablo II does more to live up to its name, which means "devil" in Spanish. It's a scarier, more sinister game.
im so excited about this i can hardly wait! i must have put in untold hours on PC but havent played it in years and really missed this game. i did enjoy d3 but my love for d2 never waned, so happy and thrilled i wish it was out already. cant wait to play this again with my army of skellys leading the way to hell...
Not sure which console version I plan on playing, but definitely very interested in Diablo II resurrected.
Skill Trees are back! FINALLY! Blizz destroyed them in D3 and WoW retail, making every character basically identical. Can’t wait to have real depth of choice again!
