I recently picked up that Night Slashers arcade game (different company, tho) and was pretty thrilled to pick it up, as I hadn't ever played it before, and it was nice to discover a retro game like that for the first time. Still, I don't generally splurge on retro games since it adds up fast. Plus, we all know that generally speaking these are going to all make the rounds again on future platforms anyway, and we have no idea if Switch purchases will carry over in the future to a new Nintendo system (unless that was confirmed at some point and I missed it).
Hmm, Renegade and Double Dragon are tempting...
Anyone know if Booby Horehore is any good?
I wish they would put the Nintendo ones on sale.
Maybe Double Dragon 🤔
@dronesplitter Night Slashers was a pleasant surprise, very well done. It feels like the closest thing to a 90's Capcom beat-em-up that wasn't made by Capcom. Even more surprising it was made by Data East!
@Fandabidozi Renegade/Kunio-kun is well worth the price for it's challenge, IMO. I elbowed punched though DD once and haven't launched it again, LOL. Still, the price is right.
@klingki I was just about to comment the very same thing. I would download a good handful of the Nintendo ones. I wish Nintendo had the desire, and will to overcome any licensing issues, and release a compilation of their arcade titles, high quality emulation.
I bought Armed F from the sale last weekend. The sale has actually been going for over a week now. I already have Top Hunter, Omega Fighter, Zed Blade and Double Dragon.
I think this is the 2nd time in a row, Hamster have put 10 random games on sale for 2 weeks. Hopefully this trend continues and we'll get another 10 discounted on Thursday.
@OorWullie yep, but they may put on sale a little more ... they have 200+ games on eshop and put on sale always the same...
Renegade is the first beat-'em-up ever, and it's also a ton of fun. Double Dragon is the second, and it's even more fun!
When I say "beat-'em-up", I mean a game where you beat enemies up and it takes more than one hit to kill each one. If a game has one-hit kills, like Kung Fu Master, Vigilante and Bad Dudes, then it's a sidescrolling action game, not a beat-'em-up.
Zee blade is wotth it for the music alone, great shooter as well xx wish that night slashers was in uk xx
The only one I want and have been waiting for is sunset riders 😭
KOF 99 is always a good time.
@doctorhino honestly I'm more a fan of KOF 2000, but I recon KOF '99 introduced the Striker system, right?
@masterLEON
I could complete Renegade on the Speccy with no lives lost back in the day. Finding the arcade a wee bit harder (nothing to do with me being ancient of course). 😅
@TheWingedAvenger "Renegade is the first beat-'em-up ever, and it's also a ton of fun. Double Dragon is the second, and it's even more fun!"
Yeah! I have both of them already from a prior sale. I always referred to them as "side-scrolling beat 'em ups/brawlers...you know...like 'Double Dragon'"
"Renegade" is worth it for its historical importance of being "FIRST". "Double Dragon" for exploding into arcades everywhere.
@Fandabidozi
I got Horehore, being a fan of Nichibutsu products. The game is kinda weird, it's very Japanese. You run around simple 2D mazes trying to collect stuff and escape from baddies. You may also dig holes to stop your enemies. Not anything special but still a decent, playable title.
I got all excited as you have double dragon neon in the links, but that one is still currently 14.99.
@Bydlak
Awesome thanks. I’ll give it a spin. 😃👍
@TheWingedAvenger
I remember how impressed I was by Renegade when I played it on my Speccy as a kid! Big sprites, fairly complicated fighting, weapons, bikes. It was a sign of the future, different from anything I played back then. Sadly, it has aged badly, the controls and movement feel sluggish which is unbearable in such kind of game.
I strongly recommend Omega Fighter.
Is it better to wait for the Samurai Showdown collection to go on sale than buy Samurai Showdown III?
Would prefer Nintendo’s own ones like Mario Bros for the arcade. Would get that if it were on sale too
3 count bout! Could be a must
With Hamster having 240 or so games on the eshop this is a small selection of games here and I KNOW for a fact I grabbed Double Dragon during a previous Hamster sale way back and I’ve seen the weird Japanese game on sale a few times before too, so they need to increase the size of games on sale AND shake up the lineup a little bit too.
@klingki I can understand Mario bros. Super Mario bros. Ballon fight, Donkey Kong and donkey Kong jr staying full price. But I’d like to buy urban champions or ice climbers and I just can’t get myself to do it at full price. And why not the 2 player version of excitebike.
@TempestStotm Assuming you ARE aware it’s already available, if your waiting for sunset riders to go on sale you’ll probably have to wait a long while as it’s relatively new and a big title in the Hamster lineup. To many of us, it’s well worth the regular asking price of $8. So Don’t wait it’s such a great game well worth $8 IMO and so much fun with 2 players!
@TempestStotm I can’t see this going on sale for another couple years.
@joey302 they have to know the games which are struggling to sell and must be discounting them while not giving sales on things like sunset riders. Some of the games on this last have been on sale multiple times.
@Kilamanjaro 3 is considered one of the worst, I’d wait for the collection to be on sale, or if you grab only one SamSho get 2, it’s highly regarded as the best one.
Purchased a few games in the sale already. When it comes to these I find myself going for the shmups.
@UmbrageHill nice, thanks for the heads up. Will remember this 🙌
@sixrings Well, good news! The 2 player Excitebike is actually not the arcade version. It's the one that's included on NES Online called Vs. Excitebike.
@JacquesLecornu it did but you're right the assists in 2000 were superior. Just trying to pick something from this list easily worth 4 bucks.
@Bydlak
I was lucky enough to discover it in my local arcade. I looked at it and I just had to play it because I'd never seen anything like it. It was fantastic but really hard, and as a little boy I couldn't get far. When I saw the NES cartridge about a year later, I bought it and beat it - hard but it can be done. The ZX Spectrum version was a far inferior port.
@MontyCircus
The arcade version of Double Dragon is awesome, but the NES version is surprisingly on the same level. I don't mind that it's one-player only, because I don't have any friends who like classic games. As a one-player game, it's absolutely stellar.
@Kilamanjaro 3 might not be the best one but I like it a lot. I really don't think there's a bad SS game from 1 to 5 Special. For this price it's well worth it. I have the first 3 games by Hamster but I ended up buying the collection, too
I'll get Double Dragon, Renegade and KOF 99. Then I'll learn more about the other games in the list to see if any other one picks my interest
Top Hunter getting no love here. It’s awesome and a no brainer on sale. Seriously... get Top Hunter
Finally got Zed Blade , loving it , the music is great and it’s great fun
I wish the selection was wider (or there were Hamster games on sale more often), because the really interesting ones are on my collection already.
Renegade is a game I was advised against, but I wanted to see where it all began anyway, so got it with Gold Points (the good old Gold Points) and finished it recently after "15 hours or more". Difficult at first, after trial and error is a game you can beat in 5 minutes or so, but really fun to master. Good value.
Double Dragon, though, is so difficult that you have to resort to the famous elbow hit, which makes it really easy to finish the game with 1 credit. 2 hours of play and I'm done with it. I don't regret it, because it's a part of gaming history I wanted to know, but if I had to stick with one of them, I'd definitely choose Renegade.
The game many many people say is crap is Vigilante, so I guess I'll play it for free one day, but looks really simple in a bad way. Not that has ever been on sale anyway.
And yes, Top Hunter is a Neo Geo gem, get it while you can, guys!
@Bydlak It's basically a graphics update to Heiankyo Alien, a very early defining video game in Japan, but all America saw of it apparently was "a weird Game Boy game I found in the bargain bin at Kmart back in the day". (well, maybe a few people saw the TurboGrafx-16 port of this very arcade game called Cratermaze.)
