Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Gets Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade, Out Now

@Samalik Fixed it just for you. Everything a business does has a budget attached to it. Some projects go over it, some under. Rarely do we know which does what.

I want games to be their best and for developers to improve their work whenever possible. If it means they need to collect additional funds to cover costs then so be it. If they have money left over in the budget to cover it, all the better. Ultimately consumers get to decide whether the investment was worth it.

Enough business 101 for you, I have some Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 Upgrade to play.

@Samalik Yup. Bought it for the Switch. Awesome thing is that it works fine on the S2 and didn’t have to spend a dime! What’s cool was Monoliftsoft commissioned a team to make a new version of the game and only charge $5 for it, if you want it.

Nintendo isn’t a charity. They take calculated risks to provide a service they believe their customers are looking for. If they do a good job and people like it, they make money and the people remain customers.

They aren’t releasing these new projects out of the kindness of their hearts or to lose money. Only government can get away with taking someone else’s money to give you things for free.

@Fishmasterflex96 Correct, I was responding to your, “they could make playable games on disc if they wanted to.”

We might be saying the same thing. They could fit the entire game on a disc if they wanted to, but you would still have to install it on to your SSD. They chose not to do that at all for X-Box and only partially for PS5.

@Fishmasterflex96 The transfer speed of a S2 cartridge is roughly 4x (400MB/s) faster than the optical drives of the PS5 and X-Box whatever. Even if that were fast enough, toss in seek times, and it wouldn’t be playable from a disc. Now selling it on a disc and making it download to your SSD is another topic.

@Strawblaze If I had to guess, I’d say somewhere around 50% after you figure in all the engineering time required to get the games running, the hardware design, and making it all work together.

Not saying this is you, but most people don’t realize the amount of R&D that goes in to something like this. Especially for what is basically a limited run for nostalgia nuts like myself. Don’t forget to include packaging, advertising, and freight, both from the factory to the warehouse, and from the warehouse to your door. Material costs are low, engineering costs are high.

A lot goes in to “a simple piece of plastic.”

Re: Nintendo Announces Launch Line-Up For Switch Online Virtual Boy

@Strawblaze it does seem crazy at first, but not when scale of manufacturing and purchase of additional content are added to the equation.

To simplify things, Nintendo is going to sell a lot of these, but probably not in the same numbers as the Meta headset. Also, Meta headsets are sold at a loss (or low profit margin if any profit at all) in the plan that owners need to purchase games for it to function. In addition they get to collection more information on you and turn around and sell that to advertisers.

As we all know Nintendo will not sell anything at a loss. There are no additional purchases to cover for a loss/low profit margin. So they need to make a profit up front on each unit sold.
