Re: Nintendo Announces Launch Line-Up For Switch Online Virtual Boy

@Strawblaze If I had to guess, I’d say somewhere around 50% after you figure in all the engineering time required to get the games running, the hardware design, and making it all work together.

Not saying this is you, but most people don’t realize the amount of R&D that goes in to something like this. Especially for what is basically a limited run for nostalgia nuts like myself. Don’t forget to include packaging, advertising, and freight, both from the factory to the warehouse, and from the warehouse to your door. Material costs are low, engineering costs are high.

A lot goes in to “a simple piece of plastic.”

@Strawblaze it does seem crazy at first, but not when scale of manufacturing and purchase of additional content are added to the equation.

To simplify things, Nintendo is going to sell a lot of these, but probably not in the same numbers as the Meta headset. Also, Meta headsets are sold at a loss (or low profit margin if any profit at all) in the plan that owners need to purchase games for it to function. In addition they get to collection more information on you and turn around and sell that to advertisers.

As we all know Nintendo will not sell anything at a loss. There are no additional purchases to cover for a loss/low profit margin. So they need to make a profit up front on each unit sold.
