Re: Review: Sonic Frontiers - A Bold But Ultimately Failed Attempt At Something New

Smithicus

I always feel with Sonic games (especially the 3D titles), it is more a fact that people desire to like these games from a kind of good-will toward the Sonic franchise, then they are actually good. Something about flying at hyper fast speeds is inherently incompatible with a 3D platforming world in an engaging and meaningful way. Even 2D Sonic titles are over-rated, and although had a great vibe, were never on the level of Mario titles. Sad to see this is another mis-direction of the franchise.

Re: Nintendo Direct Mini To Air Tomorrow, June 28

Smithicus

well, if they are doing a mini now, that means the major direct has so much content for Nintendo IP's they have to do that seperate. BotW2, Mario Odyssey 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch Edition here we come......

Re: AM2R Developers Reunite For Okami-Inspired Metroidvania 'Bo: Path Of The Teal Lotus'

Smithicus

it is trite and tedious by now, but i am recently getting bothered by the term Metroidvania. This has been gone over plenty, but it is really absurd that the 'vania' part is in there. Castlevanias didnt start doing the whole metroid backtracking item finding thing until the GBA castlevanias, where it basically implemented the Metroid model. it is just that the name works. Really it should be a Metroid-Zelda combo - but 'Zeldatroid', or 'Metelda' doesnt work too well....

Re: Feature: Inclusivity, Frogs, And Petting Dogs - Wholesome Games On What It Means To Be "Wholesome"

Smithicus

so i read through this, and the takeaway is that 'wholesome' is a purely subjective term without any objective, fixed or absolute basis. So wholesome, as a result, doesnt really mean anything at all. Well, it does, but what it means to one person, is just 'that persons opinion', and the next person can have an entirely different understanding of wholesome. So there is no shared ground or common/shared meaning the term denotes. That is all well and good, but then that means that the term is kinda meaningless (has no absolute and shared reference), which from what i read they might be happy with anyway.

Re: Hands On: Drainus Is A 2D Shmup Masterpiece, So Keep Praying For That Switch Port

Smithicus

@Damo useless? maybe it was useless to you. But you know, sometimes light hearted comments that are kind of made in jest just lighten up things a little you know. Not everything has to be deadly serious and 'constructive' like we are enthusiastic corporate employees trying to score points with how 'constructive' our comments are. Maybe not everything revolves around your perspective, you know. Plus, it is certainly a bit odd that we are getting a semi-review of a game that may or may not come to Switch, when there are plenty of titles that get zero attention but deserve it.

Re: Talking Point: WATA And The Grey Areas Of Game Preservation - Is There Any Better Way?

Smithicus

WATA is not primarily for 'game preservation' to begin with. anyone can put a game into a strong plastic case or loader, and it will be protected forever. But of course they grade games and this creates a hierarchy of quality and state for any given title. The games collectables industry is probably more booming than any other collectables industry in the world, bar perhaps the fine art market itself. The crazy inflation on prices is contingent upon an economy that paradoxically, is in very bad state. in fact the whole of western civilisation is in a state of rapid economic collapse. Fiat cash is understood as being a kind of illusion (worthless), so people who have money are flying into whatever commodities and valuables they can. The video game scene is one of the major places for that right now (along with trading cards), and so companies like WATA are naturally making a killing (and playing the market a bit along with it).

Re: Quake Update Adds New Horde Mode Levels And Accessibility Options

Smithicus

They have to be working on Quake 2. The sales on Q1 seem pretty decent, and Q2 is such a masterpiece. I really hope it drops some time this year. But amazing work on this, and great to see some of the best level-mods being added for free download. Value for money on this is off the charts. I personally didn't like this new clear text that was automatically configured into this update, but pleased to see you had the option to revert back to 'classic' text options. Seems to be an overall graphical refinement and tidy-up with this update that is nice to see as well.

Re: 'In The Dark' Is A New Puzzler Releasing For The Game Boy

Smithicus

"a free digital rom will become available two weeks after sales go live."

are things like this just labors of love and a kind of hobby for the developer. I mean it is gonna be given away for free, and i suppose they will be lucky to get a retun on the money they put into it. Respect to people that do this, but I kinda don't get it.

Re: You Can Now Read The Official Mother Novels In English

Smithicus

i gave 1 a good go. I dunno, maybe it is a nostalgia thing were it was epic back in the day, but it didnt grab me in any way. I watched some gameplay of the otheres. Maybe the later titles are superior, but i cannot help but feel the fandom surrounding this franchise is a little gimmicky and hype.

Re: AM2R Creator Isn't A Fan Of Metroid Dread's E.M.M.I. Encounters

Smithicus

@MrGawain Nintendo didn't develop the game, Mercury Steam did. Nintendo produced it as its IP (and supervised it to an extent). So Dread is 'other people' making Nintendo's stuff. Also, you say this in a dismissive tone as though AM2R is some kind of trashy remake of M2. AM2R is way, way superior to Mercury Steams 3DS M2 remake, and feels authentically like a Metroid game in the way Steam Metroid's dont. It is a remarkable fan 'remake' by any standard, produced with passion and care that eclipses most big budget titles. I think that DoctorM64 is entitled to his opinion.

Re: Random: 'Nintendo Generation' Skeletons Aren't Tough Enough, Says US Army Major

Smithicus

@origamihero depends what you mean by 'access to healthcare'. medical error was the 3rd leading cause of death in the US - and those stats came in after the fact that no one covers each others backs more than doctors (and the police). When i was doing my postgrad studies, i shared a house with med students, and i realised then that the best and the brightest were definitely not being brought into the hospital systems. Nothing is more misplaced than our current idolisation of the medical system and its employees. At the same time i know some doctors and they are competent and professional - but they tell me how bad it really is with new people coming into the structures. If by access to healthcare you mean access to proper nutrition and well directed medical supplementation (vits D, B, and c, etc) then yes, that is essential. Our soils are heavily depleted, and nutrients in food is decreasing rapidly. Knowledge is most important.
