By all accounts, Sonic Mania has been a smashing success for the blue blur, restoring much of the fanbase’s faith in SEGA’s ability to put out a great Sonic game. Of course, that’s not the only Sonic game we’re getting this year; Sonic Forces is due out in a few months, and early impressions from demo sessions have been middling to say the least. Even so, it’s exciting to see that SEGA is putting out another game in the vein of Sonic Generations, and the company recently put out a video showing off the new Tag Team gameplay.
You’ll also be able to create a custom character with his or her own special abilities, and this new mode will allow you to play as both Sonic and the custom character in a tag team mode that calls to mind the system used in Sonic Advance 3. It looks promising to say the least, hopefully the rest of the game can live up to the expectations. Check it out:
And for you Sonic CD fans, Metal Sonic’s theme has gotten a new remix for his appearance in this game. Listen to it below:
What do you think? How is Sonic Forces going to turn out? Do you think SEGA will manage to capture lightning in a bottle twice this year? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm confused what this game even is...
The cringe, I love it.
It looks like Rise of Lyric wants its element of constant dialogue back
Meh I'll wait for reviews and let's plays. Sonic 3d games are always hit or miss.
Looks very "meh" to me.
I might give it a shot but you really can't trust me. Did you hear infinites theme? IMO it sounds alright but what do I know I like what people call crappy music.
Not crazy about this remix of Metal Sonic's theme, but I will be interested to hear the remixes for the other villains' themes, especially Chaos.
No
So they just went on reddit and made a game based around fan ideas, Custom characters that are cannon a darker villain. copying sonic generations cause people like the game, welp i used to like sonic as a kid but i have lost all faith. it's sad that the mario universe has more original ideas than the sonic universe.
@BezBot
Sonic Team is always confused about what Sonic should be.
The biggest problem with the Sonic franchise is that, both SEGA and fans alike, don't know what they want from a new Sonic game.
Experimental titles like Sonic Lost World stirred the pot among fans, as it wasn't building on the well-received foundation of Colors and Generations. SEGA decides to return to that format with Forces, but the complaints persist.
Something similar has happened with the Mario Party franchise. Before Mario Party 9, fans were begging for more original and inventive ideas for the series. When Nd Cube was put in charge of Mario Party, they brought change to the table. But now fans want the original formula back.
This looks cool. It's not on the same level of the character switches in Sonic Heroes (which I loved), but it's good to see the idea come back.
@Phin68 Also over saturation, ya know cause sonic is the only ip they have and not annnnnny other popular ip's, at all, nope, none, zip, nada.
The tag team mode also reminds me of Heroes, one of my favorite Sonic games. Looks like a lot of fun! Also love Metal Sonic's theme. Really looking forward to this game, can't wait until November!
The new level is just running straight, sometimes drifting, a button mashing segment, and enemies that spawn in circles that you can destroy by holding a button and rotating the control stick.
I'm getting less excited for this game the more I see of it. Sonic as a franchise is already confused of what direction it should take, now this game is confused on what it wants to be.
I think I made the right choice with Mania.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I thought that Metal Sonic remix sounded like ass. I like most of Forces' music so far, but geez...
Perfectly fine if others like it, but I didn't care for it personally.
I want to see a true 3D sonic game (without the werehog). One perhaps where you can see the map and have to race and collect as many coins without a time frame scenario (you could race against a boss, or a friend), taking advantage of momentum, route selection and reflex motor controls--wait, maybe like the reverse of splatoon. Where all the coins are there, and it's up to you to race with your team to collect the coins first--while fighting them off mauling more coins in the process.
There's no hoping for me, I know this game's gonna be great! With this tag team gameplay, I'd love to see a Sonic Heroes 2, or a Sonic Heroes remake!
Skip
Does not look my cup of tea at all. After getting mania i can see this being a massive let down. Not a fan of these self running games. Unless its dirt cheap ill be leaving this one aside.
I must be one of the very few that didn't think Mania was the God of all games that most people claim it as.
This looks.. interesting? I don't know but I'll still be getting it. Even the so-so 3D Sonic's I've gotten some fun out of.
Mania was fantastic, and I'm optimistic about forces but if they really wanna bring back sonic on both fronts, classic and modern, they need to make a fully fledged Sonic Adventure 3 (with big the cat).
God save us all....
I loved Mania, not so much interested in this, and a little upset they seem to be linked story-wise... ah well, hopefully it ends up better than it looks, though I doubt I'd get it either way at this point.
I would like to be on board what with there being 'classic Sonic' gameplay involved, but I just don't know. Might wait for some reviews. Mania has my heart right now.
Rental, like most of the time for Sonic games with me. Still want to play it, but I'm definitely looking forward to the reviews.
Hoping the best for this game.
Reminds me of Sonic Heroes due to the signs that tell u to change character. The music sounds nice and gameplay looks fun. Still super hype for it and it's a definite day one buy for me as long as they don't ruin it in a future trailer.
Dear SEGA,
Where is my Chao garden?
Why a remix of the U.S. Stardust Speedway bad future theme?
Don't get me wrong, my homeland has nothing to do with my Sonic CD musical preferences. It's just that while the JP/EU soundtrack is consistent, the US one recycling the former's Past tracks completely wrecks the suspension of disbelief and ruins the immersion, imo, due to the lack of said consistency. The JP/EU soundtrack has a pattern. And given traveling to the past is a mandatory part of Sonic CD's 100% playthroughs, every time a player does so he or she is forced to experience a shift to a different melody.
Plus, JP/EU Bad Future for Stardust Speedway is far more iconic anyway.
(What am I doing with my life? I'm harshly criticizing one version of the Sonic CD soundtrack! I'm going to be... CRUCIFIED!)
This is the best gameplay I have seen yet for this game. Reminds me of Sonic Hero's!! Which is a fantastic game.
But like many have said above, I will wait for the reviews first.
Mania all the way
So, Sonic Heroes?
This game looks God-awful. I'm sticking with sonic Mania
