When The Wizard made its original debut in-cinemas, it was widely panned by critics for being nothing more than a lengthy commercial for Nintendo and Universal Studios. Despite this, it still managed to develop a cult following over the years.
Now, as we near the film's 30th anniversary, the movie's director Todd Holland has revealed a special Blu-ray is in the works and will arrive next February. It's all thanks to the loyal fans for repeatedly "screaming" at Universal to give the movie some respect. Here's his full message on Instagram:
#theWizard 30th Anniversary Blu-ray is in the works! Coming out in Feb 2020. Thank you to every fan who kept screaming at Universal to give this movie some respect. YOU made it happen.

I love the Power Glove. It's so bad.
I'm standing on the edge of tomorrow...
Leaving far behind my yesterday... ♪
Ahhh, I adore this film so much. Yeah, it's a commercial, but it's also a super fun little moment in time. And, I mean, what kid (or adult!) wouldn't want to run away & take a road trip with friends to play in a Nintendo game tournament in "Cali-for-nia"?! 🤓
Yes I am day 1 buy for me.
I'll watch it on my xbox.
February? Does that have something to do with the 30th anniversary of the American launch of SMB3?
I remember loving this movie and making my dad sit through it with me. Poor guy. It really increased the hype for Super Mario Bros 3. Something tells me it's best to leave this one as a nostalgic memory.
Been wanting this on Blu Ray for many years. Very happy to hear this news!!!
You know, they should do a remake of this. Give it a more modern take.
It's already out on Blu-Ray. Hopefully this version doesn't have the sharpness turned up way too high like the current release. Also, the sound levels definitely need remixing. https://www.amazon.com/Wizard-Blu-ray-Edwards-Christian-Bridges/dp/B07CLRSJKC
Gimme this and the MARIO BROS. BLU-RAY!
@kayleedayo 🎶 Send me an angel! Right now 🎶
@Corbs It's already out on Blu-Ray. Came out over a year ago. I don't know why they're making such a big deal about it. https://www.amazon.com/Wizard-Blu-ray-Edwards-Christian-Bridges/dp/B07CLRSJKC
He touched my breasts!
I'll definitely be getting that. I watched it a lot as a kid, and nowadays it's my go-to movie when I'm sick. Despite the criticism it receives (and I'll admit that it obviously has loads of Nintendo advertising), I actually always thought the movie's story was good.
Never saw it however as a Nintendo fan I must own this. To Amazon!
I have actually never seen this movie in its entirety. I don't remember being interested in it so probably not.
@HexagonSun nah it's just as good now as it was then.
Meanwhile I just bought it on VHS a few months ago...didn't even know it was ever released in my country.
@KingMike Nintendo used the film as a way of promoting SMB3 to America. It was a first look for them.
Or did you know that already? I've never actually seen the film, I just know that bit of trivia.
Who here remembers Captain Nintendo? I used to watch that as a child but it seems to have disappeared into obscurity.
I love this movie - it has an unexpected amount of story and lovable characters between all the advertisements! Have it on DVD already, looking forward to get it in HD
I believe it’s Shout Factory that is doing the Collector’s Edition, not Universal. The February date is news to me. Shout hasn’t announced it yet, but only stated that it is coming soon in 2020. He jumped the gun I guess and slipped the info out.
@KingMike
I remember Captain N, loved that cartoon. I just kick myself for not getting the complete dvd set when it came out. Now it’s Out Of Print sadly.
Ha! That will be kinda cool.
And, by the way, this is a movie where a sequel or remake could be so cool if done right.
This one escaped me. Unfotunately, I did see Mac & Me though...
remake it in tilt shifted 3d
The Power Glove only works for games. You can't use it for the other use.
I wonder what more they'll do as it's already on blu ray as it is.
I have actually never seen the movie, so I probably need to check it out sometime.
@sixrings I'll watch the VHS tape I have of it
@VmprHntrD I haven't seen the current Blu-ray, but I've heard the A/V quality on it is pretty awful - barely any better then the DVD.
Here's what blu-ray.com said in their review:
"To be blunt, The Wizard's 1080p transfer is one of the worst Universal, or any studio for that matter, has released. The movie appears heavily processed, with rough and uneven edges, edge halos, regular wobble, and smoothed-over details."
Hopefully this anniversary edition means it'll be getting a proper transfer this time around.
@LavaTwilight Indeed. Which is why I wonder if they were secretly planning something around the SMB3 launch anniversary (being that was probably one of the most famous games in history).
Awesome! Ill wait for the 30th anniversary blue ray...I’m sure they’ll stick some additional stuff in it that the regular blue ray doesn’t have. Already own it on DVD.
Nice to see a director genuinely thankful to his movies fans.
