For the last couple of years, Fortnite has been the biggest game in the world. Now, it's gone.
Today saw the end of Fortnite's tenth in-game season, with a spectacular live event taking place which was expected to tease the start of Season 11 and perhaps an entirely new map for players to explore. The live event took place as expected, but the game's island exploded and now there's... Well, there's just nothing.
It's currently impossible to play the game and all of Fortnite's official social media channels now only display the aftermath of the explosion. The live event is still going at the time of writing (you can see this below and witness the explosion itself by scrolling back through the video), but what's happening?
Of course, we highly doubt this really is the end for Fortnite, but as things stand, players have no clue what to really expect.
We're sure time will tell what's really going on, but once again Epic Games is showing a masterclass in marketing. Social media has exploded with conversation about the game - just like the island itself - and we imagine things'll be back up and running bigger than ever before.
Are you excited to see what the future holds for Fortnite? Did you watch the event take place live? Share your thoughts on what might be coming next with a comment below.

Interested in the next map (wouldn't end it and let you purchase anything on the same day)
A lot of people hate fortnite, I personally have never tried it but ive seen a lot news about the game and they seem to be pretty good on marketing to get people to talk... from this and all the crossover with movies and everything as an ex marketing student I truly appreciate the way they manage to create buzz over and over...
Oh no! And that fast a whole generation went catatonic. Will they ever recover?
Cue cheering haters chanting “Finally, Fortnite is no more”.
(I’ve never played Fortnite, I’m not a fan nor a hater)
@RunGMhx exactly! I’ve never tried it cause it doesn’t sound like my cup of tea, but there’s no denying Epic’s marketing had been next level in the last few years.
DING DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD!
Guess i finally have time to complete Realm Royale.
@RunGMhx ive played it and its not that good perfectly honest and just as bad as cod with all the trash talking noobs on both of these games plus the swatting problem is getting bad on fornite.
You could almost describe this as a "cataclysm." (EA/Bioware stifles a scream).
Guess I can uninstall it now. I kept it because it didnt support cloud saves but screw it now
It's exactly like what happened in Final Fantasy 14 before it became FF 14: A Realm Reborn.
I play, and play with my kids (one preteen and one teen). I think events like this keep it fresh and interesting, it even brought us all together to watch and take part. I say well done on the marketing Epic!
Oh no what a shame! No big loss in my mind. But first class marketing, of course this isn’t the end
@TheLightSpirit even cod does the same thing brings out the worst of people.
Looking forward to seeing what they do with the map. Love the marketing.
The game gets a lot of hate for no reason really.
About damn time
Maybe in the next chapter this game will get out of beta.
I wonder how many kids will be upset that their game isn’t working?
@gamefreak77 the Wii U sold 13 million, not less than a million
@TheLightSpirit i dont hate it completely either but its becoming more like cod now with all the trash talking to now swatting is becoming a maor issue on fornite as well
Posters for "Chapter 2" were already up on the App Store in Italy like 2 days ago. Fortnite isn't going anywhere.
@gamefreak77 Not sure if serious
Good marketing, I’ll have to jump back in and give it a go once it comes back. I think it’s done very well with the free to play model it has. Anything you buy doesn’t change the game or place buyers on a higher gameplay level. For all the hate it gets, I think it’s actually pretty fun.
Fortnite introduces to the "gamers" the shadow king ...
well, "prophecy" comes in many ways I guess...
Implosion resembles collapsing into a black hole. The next step would be a big bang scenario, or slow evaporation via hawking-radiation-like process.
So, if a new world evolves, they literally could do any kind of theme. Dino people world. A Simpsons universe. Another people universe... Do the makers of Fortnite have any other IP they'd use?
@gamefreak77 I would have much rather had the Wii U be a success than fail and force Nintendo to rush the Switch to market. Sure, the Switch library is great, but I think the Wii U was a much more interesting concept. I was just playing Fatal Frame today, and while swinging the game pad around (AKA, the spirit camera) to look for ghosts, and I thought how unfortunate there weren't more games designed around the second screen concept. So now instead, we have a Nintendo branded Vita.
Well, this is interesting. Even if the game isn't done after this, I can appreciate the marketing stunt.
I suspect they're going to reformat the map and use this as an excuse.
@gamefreak77 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot
Ahhh, the old Eric Cartman business trick.
"There's so much to do at CartmanLand but you can't coooooome!
Especially Stan and Kyle!"
A notice from the devs has been given that all your stuff gained over the seasons is maintained safe during this Fortnite blackout.
Its funny when I saw Avengers Endgame on release day and the only groaning and booing that occurred was at the Fortnite scene.
@TheLightSpirit Yeah, screw your mates for liking something! Jeez, how dare they!
Awful game, just awful. Glad it’s gone. Now can Minecraft and Call of Duty finally disappear too?
That's good news.
If only that headline was true - the arguments it would save in our household...
Niceee, very Planetside. I like it when they do big events like this, the marketing has really been top notch, even if I never got that into the game other than a few matches.
@LeatherCorpse or how about you let people enjoy whatever they want without being a jerk?
Ohh I bet the blackout is PR for buzz, get people talking ...... And a way to get the game updated very quickly by the developer. Wonder if it'll be out of Beta this season. Probably have something crazy planned.
I may not be good at it, but it is fun to play every now and again. It's fun just to see people dance, be creative and have fun (my friends, and I've seen others, create minigames like tag or whatever. Danc-a-thons, etc) and I think I spent a total of like $20, maybe even less.
Anybody who thinks this is actually the end is kidding themselves.
I've only got one of three kids still playing it. The other 2 outgrew/got tired of it.
Personally, I don't get the draw or obsession. I tried it a bit and it gets old, quick.
Well how was it supposed to compete with tetris 99?
It does not matter if you like the game or not. The marketing for this game has been perfect. What I want to know though...if you really, really hate this game, why are you clicking on the article? Because epic games has made everyone care about this game, even the "haters".
I never understood how people can hate a game. Dislike after playing perhaps, but outright hatred? Over a piece of software?!
It’s not like Fortnite’s existence has somehow destroyed big single player games or other multiplayer titles. If anything it finally shook up the exploitive IAP model. There are no loot boxes in battle royale and you can play and enjoy the game without spending a dime with no energy meters or other such crap stopping people enjoying the game.
Football is really popular but it doesn’t stop Rugby, Cricket, F1, Athletics or Golf existing does it?
@RadioHedgeFund Well said.
@Cotillion you just said you have 3 kids but its Fortnite that gets old? lmaoooo
is the average user age on NintendoLife over 30? so many complainers
@LeatherCorpse Why is it so awful?
Epic Games: "So long, and thanks for all the money you gave us!"
... Does this mean I can stop selling the Fortnite llama loot piñatas in the toy department of my store, that get torn open by kids and spill confetti everywhere? :3
Don't play the game, but that's some pretty sick marketing. Never understood the hate besides people like to think they have important opinions on nonimportant things.
@RadioHedgeFund I feel you on the hate train. Some of these commenters really are excessive in their dislike of the game.
I don't think the game is anything special in their consideration of IAPs though. 20 dollar skins/dances/emotes are still there and progress on the Battle Pass is still slow enough that players with less time or skill are forced to pay up to unlock the levels on it for the things they want.
Wish this was legit. Good riddance.
They're just copying Platdude's recent storyline..
The evil has been defeated
Please, recent leaks show this ain't the case.
From the live stream: "It's like the... the island's trying to protect itself."
Oh, so it's basically like Lost. Gotcha.
Epic, the company destined to be the next EA, acting like they're pulling the plug on their cash cow. How cute....wait no, the other thing: dumb.
Apparently, Epic Games left us a secret something in the Fortnite blackout... Legit input the Konami code, and you will see.
How will I get my fiiiiiix?!? My skin is starting to itch.
may it never be revived
@smithpa01 calling people names for not liking something you like makes you look like a child. Grow up.
@TOMAWOLF dull, repetitive, tedious and lacks any real focus or story. I was bored with it after playing it for an hour.
Hmmm! Interesting. Didn't ever play it, but probably would have for the last month or so if I had known this would have been the last season, even if it's just for a bit before Fortnite 2 or whatever.
What's this Dark Fire all about then as a physical with code in the box?
So what happened? The one who programmed the portal didn't plan where the portal exit would be? Then the meteor comes out above the island, too close to the pulling power of the portal entrance, creates some sort of gravity-less vortex resulting in a black hole that pulls everything in?
@TheLightSpirit That is, sadly, entirely your fault.
Maybe it's because I haven't been paying attention to the series, but honestly, I didn't see this coming any time soon. Finite access is part of the reason I don't invest much in online-only games though.
Where will all new dance moves come from?
Something tells me this has something to do with the lawsuits against Epic Games. Good riddance I say.
Although I won't be surprised if it comes back
Big bang scenario...
BOOOM!
The game morphs into Unreal Tournament.
I'd play that.
@RadioHedgeFund
Are you ignoring the devs that are flocking to it just like when everyone was making WOW clones (which killed lots of studios)? We don’t get Titanfall 3 because of this and Housemarque arrogantly declared that arcade was dead so they could jump in the BR bandwagon which will very probably end with them being the actual dead one here.
So long, and thanks for all the gibs ( fish)
I'm no fan of Fortnite I just been playing in last year and then I stop playing now and I'm going to delete it on my switch like in next 2 or 3 weeks.
I probably go with Overwatch because It's more easy to battle with other teams and using with better overwatch characters, better skins, and loot boxes.
@gamefreak77 do t know how the switch is a 3ds replacement when nintendo themselves said the 3ds successor is in the process of being made and that was stated after the switch was released
And nothing of value was lost!
Maybe participation was falling and they wanted to be dramatic?
Or they have a New Game coming out and want to herd the sheep more effectively...
@gamefreak77
13.56 million Wii U consoles were sold and over 100 million games on it.
God said "Let there be Void." And it was good...
I'd be happy if the crazy were really done. But it's not. Even if, somehow, the new map is terrible, they'd just bring back the old one.
So long as they can keep milking 12 year old kids for money for more silly character skins and dances, this game will never die. They even shoved their trash into the Avengers. It's going no where.
@LeatherCorpse and you think wishing some games didn't exist because you don't like them is so much more grown up?
No interest in the game whatsoever, but this is a pretty brilliant publicity stunt.
It's working. I don't play Fortnite, never have, not interested, but I find this fascinating and I keep checking on the various live streams to see what's happening. Absolutely brilliant work by Epic — they completely dominated the social media conversation on a Sunday, guaranteed heavy gaming media coverage all this coming week, and will take over again whenever the new version launches.
Bang.
I wonder if this will happen again next year, just when the next-gen consoles arrive.
@JJtheTexan i agree. Its excellent marketing!
At least they won't ever come to Stadia.
There's another retail code in a case coming out soon. Fortnite isn't going anywhere.
@TheLightSpirit how dare they have different preferences than you! Shame on them!!!!
"Epic Games is showing a masterclass in marketing..."
I agree. My son has been glued to his computer all day watching... nothing... and he's excited about it!
End it please
@gamefreak77 I'm guessing you're a troll. Everything you said was wrong. Literally nothing you said was right.
Never cared for the game but they've always been pretty great at marketing stunts like this. Really cool way to end its first map.
@andrew20 gasps kill me kill me now! 😵😵
Uh, did y'all forget the Chapter 2 leak?
I gotta hand it to them, there has never been another game like Fortnite. This is the kind of stuff that brings a generation of gamers together.
Ya know, just not MY generation. Now, where's my next short indie game?
This is one of the best “Server is down for maintenance” things I’ve seen.
I mean, if you have to take the servers offline to upgrade everything anyway, might as well write it into the story...
Who cares..played it 5 mins and deleted it..Boring as it can be
I first heard about Fortnite ending presumably, from my brother and I said, "Well, I'm glad that it's over I think. Now the next craze will be Overwatch"
It's weird because I don't care about fortnite or play it, but having it temporarily shut down makes me feel weirdly empty inside. Just how one of the biggest games ever disappeared feels strange, even if it'll probably come back in a few days.
I personally don't have much interest in Fortnite, but have to admit, their marketing is off the charts. For anyone hoping that this is the death of Fornite, you got a long wait, because it's not going anywhere. This is just to make way for a whole new map.
@TheLightSpirit I can relate to that, trust me. Try to find some new roommates if you can. If you live with lazy people that want to sit around playing video games, or watching tv all day, and they have no one else bringing in the bread, they'll eventually sink. Let them learn the hard way.
I'd be pretty pissed if the devs suddenly decided to completely shut down a game I was playing with no warning. Obviously it was done in this way to garner attention (as if that game needs more) but to me it just seems incredibly unprofessional.
God level clickbait here. It was a pretty cool event. I watched it on YouTube later but I was pleased to see that if you missed it and boot up the game you get your own little black hole which gradually sucks up the menu and everything while faking a connection error. It's a really well-put-together intermission between seasons.
@Expa0 Given that it's a freemium game with twenty dollar skins people regularly invest in I doubt they could shut down any time soon without like, a year of warning.
The hatred for Fortnite on this website is comical.
I don't think the game's quality is so good to the point where it deserves that level of success, but the graphics are nice, the gameplay is understandably addictive, and the constant updates is impressive.
If Fortnite is gone, albeit possibly for a short time, wishes really do come true.
Now if we can just rid the world of Wayfair commercials
Cool publicity stunt, gotta say.
@deafswin37 Exactly the same! I hope it will be always stay in this current form as it is now!
Long live Minecraft
@TheLightSpirit
I'm 38 and your original comment was still bad and unwarranted.
Now we can stop hearing about Fortnite, finally!
PRAISE THE SUN
@SalvorHardin devs flock to every popular genre to make a quick buck. In the 16 bit years, it was platformers. When the Xbox came out, every game had to be Halo and have a tacked on multiplayer (Metroid Prime 2, anyone?) After GTA3, open world was the one to aim for. Every other game on the Wii was a party And/or fitness game.
Do people hate on Super Mario Bros. for popularising platformers? The only person who I’ve ever met who dislikes 2D Mario games is me on account of I grew up as a SEGA fanboy.
This is hilarious
Never played it, don't care about it, where's Mario?
Loved this event, I'll be playing the new season for sure
Ofcourse we all know Fortnite is coming back.
But this is such a great move from the developers.
The coolest "server maintenance"-message you can think of.
Nah, publicity stunt nothing more. And seems very working one.
Ofc bit annoying for the players if they cannot play it for this stunt.
I really don't care (aka don't hate either), since I don't play and I am about 20 years too old for Fortnite (I am 34).
But wanted to comment anyways.
I think it's time to do the Crash Dance:
@smithpa01 grow up, kid. Your constant whining solves nothing.
@graysoncharles grow up; not everyone likes the same nonsense you do. Pathetic.
I couldn’t care either way.
@EasyDaRon I wouldn't call the 3DS crap, surely you can't deny it had a great catalogue of games?
If nothing else, Fortnite has some bravado when it comes to presenting and hyping the season cycles.
Epic really are light years ahead of anyone when it comes to marketing.
Not a huge Fortnite gamer, but the way Epic do marketing and promotion is something else entirely.
@gamefreak77 Dude, I hope whatever you're smoking over there isn't dangerous.
fortnite: hey guys its the end.
pubg: wait wa-
I have a couple hundred hours in Fortnite but haven't played in months. I will definitely be jumping back in!
It's leading to a big bang style event , with a new map exploding into life from the scrunch up matter of the universe. It's not dead, it makes too much money to be dead.
@RiasGremory You could say the same about alot of online games, just yesterday I had to join over not even kidding when I say this, 20 lobbies in Smash ultimate arenas because the owner either got mad that they were put in last place and had to wait in a line, or just simply didn't like you.
Fortnite alone has made Epic enough money they're basically trying to become Valve 2.0 even if the Epic store itself is garbage compared to Steam.
The game has been out for two years now and while they're still raking in the duckets, they probably noticed a slight drop in players and users this year and doing something like this will definitely draw eyeballs again to the game.
I'm sure there are at least a handful of kids out there who are losing their shit right now because they can't play their current obsession.
I guess this is the 2019 version of The Crying Game type mass media "surprise"?
If only it was truly the end of the game, unfortunately it is not. I could just never really get into fortnite mostly due to the building mechanics.
I hope thats finally the end of the cancer for underage kids.
Man, I'm glad I never got into it
It will be two weeks.
There isn't anyone who genuinely believes this game is gone, right? Corporate greed will keep this game around for as long as possible.
Only been playing since season 8 on switch, and couldn't get to the event in game, so I watched someone live streaming it. Got the tingles watching it.
Honestly, Good riddance to bad rubbish... never really enjoyed the game at all and boy did I give it the old college try, it's just tiresome being back killed by 12 year olds and youtubers that only play this game. Makes it less fun for any newcomer. Maybe something new and fun will come out of this. To all those that enjoyed the game, I hope that you find another game to enjoy just as much!
@TheLightSpirit
I don't doubt for a moment that someone would live in your household.
Even as a non-Fortnite player myself I must admit its genius marketing! And if it affected one of my favorite games, I would be itching with anticipation!
Its hilarious though that there are actually people who think the games is gone forever. Of course not, not in this way.
What does it mean though? Probably Epic bought by Microsoft (they buy everything), Fortnite 2 incoming (not free anymore, bad luck players).
I can’t get Fortnite to play on switch since this update.
All I have is a black icon with Fortnite only coming visible when clicked.
However when clicked the game give back error code 2002-0007
I’ve run the corrupted data check and re downloaded the game but it stays the same.
I went to delete it this evening and it wouldn’t delete and it gave me the same error code of 2002-0007.
Anyone else had this issue?
