Super Mario Maker 2's version 2.0 update arrives this week, and it's bringing with it The Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda – which gives you the power to transform into Link, the Hero of Time.
The update will also add new course parts – including Spike, Pokey, Frozen Coin, P Block and Dash Block – as well as a new speedrun mode where you can compete for the fastest time on courses created by Nintendo, with special Mii costumes being up for grabs.
Here's some more info, direct from the PR:
After downloading the Ver. 2.0.0 update, the new Master Sword item will be available to use exclusively in the 8-bit Super Mario Bros. style. When this new course part is picked up, Mario will transform into Link, equipped with a new set of moves like attacking with a sword, shooting arrows and dropping bombs.
In the recently released The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch, Link encounters familiar characters from the Super Mario games like Piranha Plants and Goombas, but this time Link is joining a Super Mario game in Super Mario Maker 2.Transforming into Link using the Master Sword opens up a whole new world of design possibilities for creators. Using his arrows, Link can shoot far off switches that Mario would normally not be able to hit. His new down thrust move with the sword will defeat usually protected enemies like spike-covered Spinies. And with bombs, some walls that would normally be impassable by Mario and friends can easily be blown up.
In addition to Link, the update also adds more course parts and enemies, as well as a new Ninji Speedruns mode, perfect for players looking for a challenge.
Dash Block: Available in the Super Mario 3D World style, the Dash Block course part gives Mario a major speed burst when stepped on.
Frozen Coin: These coins are surrounded by a block of ice and can only be released if melted by fireballs or other fire elements, including a certain angry sun.
P Block: When a P Switch is hit in the course, invisible P Blocks temporarily turn into hard platforms, or vice-versa.
Spike: This classic enemy coughs up massive spike balls and launches them at Mario. If used in the snow environment, Spike will toss snowballs instead!
Pokey: The iconic stacked cactus from multiple Super Mario games joins Super Mario Maker 2 for the first time. Players can even edit the height of each Pokey.In the new Ninji Speedruns mode, players can take on a timed challenge in courses created by Nintendo exclusively for this mode. Other players’ Ninji Ghosts will run alongside players as they compete against rivals from around the world. The Ninji Ghosts that appear are selected from player data at a similar performance level, so players can gradually improve their performance by running the course alongside other players’ Ninji Ghosts. Players can also collect stamps by clearing courses and redeem them in-game to get special Mii costumes.
Each Ninji Speedrun event will run for about one week, with new courses distributed periodically. During the event, players will be ranked by their play time in that course. Players can still run the course alongside Ninji Ghosts and collect stamps even after the event period has ended.
The update drops on December 5th. Excited?

Very nice but why so late when many people have likely moved on?
@TechaNinja
Because things take time to make?
@TechaNinja
Mario Maker 2 is still on the top sales chart in multiple regions, plus you know this is the first Holiday shopping season since it's been released right?
@TechaNinja Because it's player-driven content game? It depends not on single player that is done and "moved on", but on constant stream. Kinda like minecraft or any other similar games, where content is created by players and developers only provide additional features to improve such crafting.
So how long before somebody recreates Zelda 1 ?
Fishy Boopkins hitting the big time here.
(For uncultured swines, it's an SMG4 reference)
Holy cow, that Master Sword power-up is actually a game-changer. I didn't think Nintendo would literally allow Mario to transform into Link, but here we are. I'll definitely be getting back into Mario Maker 2 in a few days.
Since Nintendo is more than willing to introduce stuff that drastically change the game's mechanics, I'm starting to think we could see some other interesting power-ups (i.e. Warp Star power-up turns Mario into Kirby).
Awesome...even though I still haven't made a single level in SMM2 but ya know...
Absolutely nuts - very impressive update!
Nice, one step closer to the Zelda Maker

Needs 100 mario to make a return. Endless challenge gets a bit stale with no princess to save and no main goal
@TechaNinja the sheer number of stages that constantly get uploaded say otherwise
Will there be any new Nintendo made levels added to the game with all these features? Or do we have to wait for people to create levels with it?
Awesome! I've been waiting for some new SMM2 content. And this all seems really cool.
Neat and a good update to boot. I was wondering what Nintendo was doing with this game, the first one had constant updates and I missed getting levels made by great developers that gave you a new character to turn into.
Great update, first of many I hope! Would love some new game styles down the line. Just happy to see they are going to support it longer term.
Time to dive back in
I sold this a while ago after getting burned out on Mario, may have to rebuy!
This is awesome. I hope they do a metroid version of this as well now.
Sweet! This is a welcoming update just in time for the holidays!
Well this came out of nowhere! This is a game that should have been supported long ago, glad it finally gets some extra content.
I pretty much gave up on Mario Maker 2 getting new content at this point.
Which is why these news are the best possible way to kick off the week. Can't wait for this baby to drop.
Hopefully new styles will come out next year!
This is awesome! I can't wait to try out the Link courses that people will create! I for one am in creating courses haha so I'll just wait for to others to do itm
I hope they add Samus and Kirby next.
Still no new game styles though... maybe with the next update? This is definitely a welcome change. A bit disappointed you couldn't use Link from AoL for the SMB3 game style or from ALttP for SMBW gamestyle, but nvm.
Very cool. Would love some new content come to Super Mario Party as well!
@TheAwesomeBowser I find that offensive since I don't even know what SMG stands for. I may in that case be uncultured but I at least know that 'swines' is grammatically incorrect.
They should fix online play first, because that's still a mess.
@TechaNinja
Because they're trying to convince the people that haven't yet bought the game. They do still make money off sales, even if the early adopters aren't playing anymore.
@TechaNinja I feel like you answered your own question there.
This is the kind of bold Nintendo move I wish happened more often.
That's pretty cool, I stopped playing a couple of weeks after launch so this might get me back on it
This is a great update. I still won't be getting the game though as only briefly played the first one on Wii U.
I wish Nintendo would show some love to Super Mario Party though as it is needing new content. But guess they are holding off any updates for a sequel instead.
That's very cool. Would love to also see a Metroid Varia suit power up.
I also wouldn't mind paying for a new style. But I think the game needs more visual customisation, more music choices and maybe tweaking the multiplayer versus as to me that's the best part of the game but still under-developed.
This is great but where are my amiibo costumes!?
Good to hear, and long overdue. But what about authenticity? Spike balls are useless in Super Mario Bros. 3, and Pokeys are fireproof.
Wow, a Link cameo, how original... At least in the first one it was just cosmetic. Seems stupid to me to crowbar non-Mario game mechanics into a game that's supposed to be all about Mario game design, but oh well.
@Haywired It's a game about user generated content in a Mario Setting. Adding Link to it gives the creator additional tools and mechanics to make awesome / crazy levels.
Cool, they added Fishy Boopkins. Now we just need Saiko Bichitaru, Bob, Meggy and Tari.
@Pod I bought the game day one and I still play it daily.
@sanderev
Good to hear. Who's your favorite level architect?
These sound like really fun additions. Can't wait to mess around with them!
@Pod I mostly create levels in the game. And I do play my friends levels.
Well, better late than never!
Spikes are a cool addition- I like you can spin jump on their spike balls (which can open up some cool course challenges), and them them throwing snowballs in the snow theme is a nice touch. If only they looked like Snow Spikes, too.... Pokeys are a fantastic addition. Don't sleep on that one, because they both belong and can open up some tricky course layouts.
Frozen Coins are cool too, and I would love to see Nintendo do a similar thing with enemies. We need Frozen Munchers!
I like the ideas of having Dash Blocks in a 2-D game, although clearly they do more in 3-D. Not so sure why they are confined to 3D World alone though. (I know that was where they were introduced, but still...) P-Blocks don't really do it for me, though. I'm sure some people will like them, but I don't see how they are different than just having a walkway of blocks, tbh.
But the Master Sword.... wow! I'm no Zelda fan, and even I was gawking at that! Such a unique power-up, so much so I don't even care it's SMB exclusive. Link can use his shield, bow, and bombs? And a technical ground pound?! This more than makes up for no Mystery Mushrooms, and I really hope Nintendo expands upon this idea. A Mega Man power-up would be epic.
Maybe we can get a Garlic powerup for you-know-who...
well this came out of nowhere Nintendo remembered they released Mario Maker 2 this year and is in desperate need of new content
@TheAwesomeBowser Not funny, didn’t laugh.
@TheAwesomeBowser lol toxic. Smg4 isnt funny anymore. Once you've seen 1 of his videos you've seen them all. He got really lame after he hit 1 million subs.
Cool addition! No where is Zelda Maker!!!
As much as I loved the first Mario Maker, I had to admit to myself that there's no way I'd find the free time to get my money's worth for this game (not to mention the prerequisite backlog of other games). But man... that Master Sword suddenly makes it something like 407.1% more tempting to get this game...
@TechaNinja Something like Mario Maker 2 offers tons of replay value
This isn't like some games that you complete the campaign and then move onto the next game.
Can't wait for the update. Everything looks great! I'm most excited for the Dash Panels and the Master Sword. For those of us waiting for a Zelda Maker, this is the closest thing we're getting!
Seeing the master sword power up makes me wish they would make a zelda maker game
Update looks great! I hope that there’s an option for Spike to throw his spike balls downward just like some titles in the NEW series.
Well this is exciting. I guess it is soon time to get back to crafting some Mario levels.
This Master Sword power up reminds me of a flash game where you played Super Mario Bros. as different 8 Bit Nintendo characters with there own tricks. It was very basic comparably to what they are showing off here but it does bring some excitement to some future possibility. Samus with Ice beam for freezing foes in place? Pit with short flight? Wario with his wario land 3 move set? I'm curious to see if they do, do more with this.
This is one of the best updates I've seen in a while. Super stoked for this one..
Very nice! Still waiting for ''Extra Styles'' to make sense though.
This is a solid update. Really solid, actually.
Was about to sell the game...but maybe will hang onto ot a bit longer now.
This is great! This feels like an announcement that needed to be on a Direct of some sort though. Maybe they'll re-cap it in some sort of December Holiday Direct or January Direct. It seems too interesting to drop in a silent presser.
This is fantastic and I would have paid for it. Gives me a reason to watch streamers again.
@TechaNinja I assume to sell copes at full price before Christmas or to rejuvenate a game that inevitably will fall off. You even see Mario maker streamer audiences fall off.
Basically content that the Wii U version had through Amiibo. I think Nintendo really missed an opportunity to include Amiibo functionality in this game, but have it be optional obviously. Those of us with large collections would be satisfied and newcomers wouldn't have felt pressured to diving in to the collecting madness.
The master sword power up seems great. I didn't expect any updates would have a power up that changes the game so drastically. I am surprised that there isn't a new game mode being added yet though, but with this new master sword power up being added...is it possible that new modes might not even be Mario modes?
This will pull me back in.
I hope it reignites community interest, as I was expecting more regular updates.
@NEStalgia I think Nintendo's going to do a repeat of last time. Spend December, January and half of February mostly promoting Smash then get a big Direct out.
Master Sword power-up is beautiful. I can't wait to make a level and play the incredible levels people will create with it.
Give a little and I'll want more, though! How about an amazing Samus Aran power-up to get us some Metroid stages? And if that happens, I'll make an epic zelda-metroid crossover adventure... or try to.
edit: good to know I'm not alone on wanting Metroid things...
@Grumblevolcano You spelled Pokemon wrong.
@dewokkel online play is as good as it’ll get in this game. It’s P2P so there’s no servers to upgrade, it’s entirely based on players’ Internet connections, and so if one player is lagging, all the other players in the match are too. There’s not really anything you can do there when it’s P2P, it’ll always be as smooth as the worst player’s internet. The solution is to make it server based, but that would involve rebuilding all online play so heavily that it’d be cheaper and easier to just make a new game entirely... so throw that on the wishlist for SMM3 and realize this one will always be like this.
@DarthFoxMcCloud what Amiibo content changes the entire game mechanics? This isn’t a costume, it literally gives players a sword, bombs, and arrows. Much better than simply changing Mario’s sprite, I prefer one entirely new powerup over a hundred nonfunctional costumes.
How are the Zelda timeline nerds going to fit this one in? Mario and Link are actually the same person? Looking forward to the first take trying to make the case.
This update looks amazing! I had a lot of fun with SMM2 but fell off it after a while as I couldn't think of any new stage ideas that hadn't been done to death. The Ninji speedrun idea looks really fun, although I wish they could apply it to fan-made stages! I'll definitely check this out on the 5th.
@TechaNinja That's the whole point! Updates like this give this game legs. And it means that people are continuously talking about and (especially) streaming this game which draws attention to the game to those who don't already have it - especially the ones who have just bought a Lite and are looking for something to play on it. Nintendo games are well-known for having a ton of longevity, with strong sales years after they release, so boosting that tail is a smart move.
Great update!
Ninji mode reminds me of Battle Royale Mario.
Finally something else then just being the nintendo stars lol
WOW! That is WAAAY more than the Mystery Mushrooms from last game (and this doesn't even require an amiibo!). I wonder what else they have up their sleeves...?
Also, DOGGONE MY LUCK! The original levels I would have made for my NSMW would have been Vanilla Lake and Rosalina's Ice World! They really should have announced this on Friday before I traded it Saturday! ;_;
Holy crap, they put The Adventure of Link into Mario Maker!!
This looks pretty cool. Hopefully soon they will give us sprites of the koopa kids!
Wow, lot of content and releasing in just a few days?! I like how adding Link really changes up the game style and all the different moves he has. The 4 swords stage idea was cool
hoping for more themes at some point too ! love this
Fans: Please remake Zelda 2!!!
Nintendo: Uhhh no
Fans: Please!!!!!
Nintendo: How about Link in Mario Maker?
Fans: Confused Excitement!?!?!?!?!?
I want to see Donkey Kong throwing barrels added
@Euler One could argue in that case that it’s all the in the Windfish’s dream
@DeltaPeng I was floored by that Four Swords example
I just bought this game last week finally, so it's cool to know there can still be new things coming.
@PickledKong64 Yeah I have to admit that LOL.
@LavaTwilight It's a joke, not meant to be taken seriously.
@LavaTwilight All I could think of is Super Mario Galaxy 4, but I didn't think Nintendo had made that game yet, or even 3.
@TechaNinja If the world 'moves on' that quickly, then good luck to them – I don't care for my personal world to be that pacey thank you, or to try to keep up that much with what others do – just play the games that your naturally attracted you – not 'trending' ones (hate the word trending and all it represents). A game doesn't become irrelevant because it's a few months old, or because no DLC has arrived. SMM2 will do just fine at its own pace.
Looking forward to some mini Zelda adventures.
As usual, Nintendolife focuses on the "Zelda" part of the announcement/update, even though the seasoned level makers probably won't be using the Master Sword power-up outside of a novelty level or two. I see P-blocks, Spikes and frozen coins becoming a staple of future top-tier levels.
@KingMike haha me too. Or Super Metroid Grumble.
Solid Metal Gear
Stephen May Gry 4, The Weeping
The Salsa Mexican Game
It could be anything.
@TheAwesomeBowser Fair enough. My jokes are often taken seriously too. So what does it stand for? Super Monkey Gall-bladder?
@LavaTwilight SuperMarioGlitchy ( https://supermarioglitchy4.fandom.com/wiki/SMG4 )
I watched one of the videos and that was enough
@Antraxx777 Yeah, they could reconcile a lot of timelines that way.
I suppose Mario, Luigi, Wario and Yoshi all transformed into one another by collecting their respective caps in Super Mario 64 DS, so this isn’t that big of a stretch (true to form, he surrenders his cap and powers upon taking damage).
Also - where the hell is the Weird Mushroom? That would take like two lines of code. Get it together, Nintendo!
@TechaNinja mario maker 2 is very popular dude look all the youtube videos watching people die alot especially couple of well known youtubers.
Rupee coin re skin, PLEASE
