Despite ongoing rumours about a pro model Switch arriving at some point this year, Nintendo hasn't said anything about it. If it does exist, though, don't expect it to be released anytime soon.
During the company's latest financial results briefing today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said there were "no plans" to launch a new Switch model in 2020.
Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base. Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.
As explained by Furukawa, Nintendo will instead focus on the appeal of its existing line of Switch systems - this includes the original model and the Lite model, which was launched in September last year.
Nintendo does not believe it has maxed out sales of existing models yet – with the following chart illustrating the minor boost across all-regions when the Switch Lite was released.
we feel that we have not yet fully communicated the special features and appeal of Nintendo Switch Lite, so we will continue to address this going forward
Earlier today, Nintendo revealed a new Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch, which will no doubt increase sales of the original hardware. It arrives in North America on 13th March, and in Europe, Japan and Australia on 20th March.
Were you hoping to see a new pro model Switch released this year? Comment down below.

No need to make a new one just yet, the old one is still printing cash. I wouldn't mind an upgrade though. I managed to fix my joycons with contact cleaner and they work fine again.
I’m more afraid of the potential zelda model I know I'm gonna get suckered into buying because after seeing the AC one I know the gloves are off! They figured out how to paint the dock.
Glad they dismissed the rumors. Hopefully this will table the pro talk for a year.
But guys! The Wall Street waiter at the restaurant across the street from Nintendo headquarters said we're getting a Switch Pro...at some point! Never lose hope! It'll happen! I swear!!!
Focusing on da games.
They said similar statements at this time last year correct?
let's see how many days has to pass until new rumours about the Pro appears...
SuperMetalDave64 is going to be salty when he hears this, Lol.
If this is true, I'm crushed.
@MasterJay
I believe Nintendo said they would not announce new hardware at E3 2019. Which they didn't.
Instead, the Lite was announced ~2 weeks after E3 2019. The better battery life Switch was announced about ~1 month after that.
And I've got no plans to shave my head bald but it still may happen. I trust them as far as I can throw them.
@JR150 we will get a pro version. It just won't be called a pro and it will probably be next year if not in 2022. Nintendo will let Sony and Xbox have their time for a couple years.
Everyone and their mothers know Nintendo are a bunch of huge bad liers so i won't listen to anything they say
Oof. "No Plans" is usually Nintendo's way if saying "it's not happening, so stop asking". Usually, a "nothing to announce at this time" more often than not hints at it possibly happening.
Yeah right... they lied about not releasing a console and we got the NES classic...
@Spoony_Tech DO IT!
Also, what @MasterJay said.
Though if they'd like to focus on games this year and hold off on the new console until early 2021 I'm ok w/ that too, they just had 2 new revisions last year.
The guy said "during 2020" as opposed to "this financial year" which they usually say during these meetings and phone calls, so he's leaving next Feb and March open.
Nintendo really needs to step their game up in many departments. I know this is a Nintendo fan site with tons of blinded fanboys who will damage control till their last breath. Firstly the online... I want real voice chat, messages, game invites, free game giveaways like Xbox, PS, and epic game store does.
Also the console itself needs to be way more powerful so developers can make their games on it. At the moment it’s holding on by a thread with all of the sacrifices to all 3rd party games 720p or less and 30 frames per second games.. and don’t forget about the delays on games because devs need more time to make the game run acceptable..
With the new Xbox and ps5 close to release and the power gap growing further it’s a matter of time before 3rd parties quit release as many games.. and don’t forget AMD and Nvidia are releasing high end GPUs this year as well..
Anyways, if this is true it’s bad news for many fans because “we want more power” 1080p 60fpa minimum. It’s 2020 and 1080p gaming started over 10 years ago.. this is unacceptable.
With Nintendo, they’re always not doing something until they are. That said, it makes sense that 2020 is a software year for them. New hardware is always in the wings though, it doesn’t have to be Switch branded either! You never know what they might -literally- pull out of their pocket
No Switch revision - but nothing about "joy-cons pro"...
As of today, there are no plans, as of tomorrow, who knows? Nintendo sure likes to keep people guessing.
Huh, that sounded surprisingly more definitive than usual - particularly the wording "please note that..." Like he was going out of his way to inform people. Of course, just because they have no plans now doesn't mean they won't tomorrow. But yeah, sounds somewhat more definitive in this instance, IMO.
Eh, maybe next year.
If I remember correctly, they also said the same thing about the Switch Lite. Asking companies these questions is entirely pointless.
Nintendo will NEVER do what the media said.
Nintendo always do what you least expected, I think their next console will be a good old home console like PS5, that will be the bomb.
@HardcoreDaBoss Personally, I won't settle for anything less than a Switch that can run 4K60 in portable mode, burns my hands and lasts thirty minutes on a single charge.
More consistent resolution and/or higher framerates docked would be quite nice, but a portable system has to make trade-offs that regular consoles don't.
@Ryu_Niiyama
I hope it quiets down. A revision does not make sense until at least Mar 2021.
I'll hold out for a Switch 2, which will have the upgrade from Switch Pro power-wise and then some, along with backward compatibility and a new library. This is akin to us currently having the DS, skipping the eventual DSi and holding out for the 3DS.
I think Nintendo realizes there is no point in trying to directly compete with 2 consoles releasing simultaneously this holiday season. They just need to ride it out with their superior library this holiday and once the novelty of the new consoles wears off and they have so few games released, they can grab attention again with a revised console to expand the Switch's lifetime until the Switch 2 is ready.
I'll say it again, they never admit to planning a new device far in advance because it would hurt sales for the current devices.
That is exactly what I expected for Switch this year. To see how it fares out against things to come, and how it is pushed to its absolute limits in almost every respect. So in a way, this is a bit like a transitional year for Switch in terms of how its hardware is currently positioned.
I knew it was more viable for new hardware to be released in 2021, Nintendo also knows that would make it a completely new product, too
That doesn't rule out potential announcements on new hardware this year, though... (I bet some rumours are right, but the 2020 release date is probably now confirmed as incorrect)
@HardcoreDaBoss
1080p 60fps is the golden standard, I agree.
But unfortunately it is not within this Switch's grasp. Maybe a Pro, but introducing a Pro will split the base, that is relatively new. It hasn't been 3 yrs yet. I think you need to reframe your mindset as follow: the Switch is a handheld that can dock. It is not meant to compete with the two other guys, it will never catch up in power because Nintendo wants to keep the console price down.
Until the next console generation or revision releases, the library keeps expanding to keep people's interest and attract more diverse gamers with the enticing portability, I think the main focus should be on improving eShop, online capabilities including communication and user interface such as folders and maybe even themes to bring up your experience to the enjoyable comforts you expect from the year 2020.
Not planning to launch this year, means announcement at e3, launch Jan 1 2021
I’m pretty satisfied with my Switch. Of course, I would buy a “Pro” instantly, but I don’t desperately need it at the moment. Nintendo, take your time, shove the best tech you affordably can in there, and release it when you’re ready (and when it’s been thoroughly quality checked).
4K isn't the rage since xvox/pspoor only upscale and don't give True 4K. Want that get a PC gaming Rig SLI/CF that will kill anything from xvox/pspoor at TRUE 4K 1440 60fps. Trolls of xvox/pspoor needs to get their butt off their heads. I can see them releasing a updated Switch with switchable resolution during xvox/pspoor new hardware. The Switch already is there all they need to do is make a Switch that can Portable do 720/1080p Switch*pun* and keep a 60fps bandwidth. Otherwise this update will kill xvox/pspoor claims of 4K upscale as fake 4K reality.
Tss. That means nothing. IMO.
Might be wise, it would be foolish to release a new model quite close to the new PS5 and XBox Series X systems. Better to do it later when no one can afford those 2 systems and Nintendo be like "Hey, try our new and improved Switch for much cheaper than those super systems!"
Star Fox Grand Prix 2.0. No means no.
They'd have to be nuts to introduce a new one this year. The Switch 2/pro/whatever will be compared to the PS5 and and the Xbox Not a Tower. Better to give them a year or two to be the big impractically powerful things and continue to let ARM chips get beefier and more powerful.
The iPad Pro from 2018 is already similar in terms of power to the Xbox One S (according to Apple anyway) and the non-Apple ARM chips tend to be a year or two behind, so it's feasible that by the time that the new Microsoft and Sony consoles have been out for a year and a half, Nintendo might be able to release a portable that rivals the Xbox One and PS4 easily. And realistically, graphics improvements keep having diminishing returns.
Last year Nintendo also had "no plans" to release a Switch revision.
Well.. they did.. not once, but twice.
@sanderev Link to Nintendo stating that they had no plans to release new hardware last year?
@Investor9872
Here you go:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/nintendo_is_not_considering_a_switch_successor_or_price_cut_at_this_time_says_president
@sanderev No hardware at E3 you mean. Learn to PR lol.
Has anyone actually been stupid enough to wait for a Pro version since 2017? Anyone that easily led?
@GrailUK Nintendo hasn't shown new hardware at E3 since the Wii U launch..
E3 is not important anymore. Seeing Sony and MS basically ditching it.
A Pro version is coming. And it will launch in Q3 this year. That's my prediction. And sure it won't be announced at E3.
@MasterJay
They said this at a financial briefing for investors though. I don't think they'd lie in that context.
Personally I’d rather wait a year to two to get a switch 2 rather than a pro...
@sanderev No no no. You misunderstood. Nintendo said there was no new hardware at E3. Irrespective of past history, they didn't explicitly say at all.
They said that last year.
@SwitchForce xvox and pspoor? Salty fanboy are we? Next gen consoles will do 4k 60fps if not better. Xbox one X can already run some games at 4k60 and ps4 pro has a number of 1800p 60 games.
that pretty much shuts down the pro rumors been saying this for a while nintendo is smart enough to avoid the upgrade spec thing that sony and microsoft keeps pulling by making different models which confuses or even hurt people wallets just stick to making successors not mid life cycle spec upgrade.
@sanderev your going to end up very disappointed that there be no switch pro at all cause switch still has a few years left till its next successor plus nintendo recently brought out the revamp switch model with slight improvements on battery life and storage and nintendo not that dumb to get drag into a upgrade spec model that sony and microsoft keep doing.
@xxx128 you do realize they released a revision switch model with some improvements over the regular model.
Noice, I just got the battery upgrade last year so this is fine. My children need wine anyways.
@RiasGremory I do not need a Pro Switch. That's not the point I'm getting at here I just think it will happen. And it will happen this year.
Simple, and I've said this before as well, releasing a Switch Pro after the launch of the PS5 and XBOX Series X is just stupid. Because those systems will easily beat the Switch Pro, and it wouldn't be getting much hype. Releasing a Switch Pro BEFORE the PS5 and XBOX Series X will give more hype and that's why I say it's launching Q3 this year. And I think it's going to be September 2020 with an announcement in August.
PS5 and XBOX Series X are set to launch Q4.
Makes sense, I don't think BotW 2 is launching this year and if such a device was to exist I'd imagine they'd launch it alongside BotW 2. I'm guessing 2020's Zelda game will be Wind Waker HD.
I just hope Nintendo stick with Switch for years to come. An upgrade will come soon enough. I don’t want them to suddenly release a totally new console. That would be a huge mistake.
January 2021 Release then??/
On a serious note though I'm probably glad about it.
I'll no doubt be investing in a PS5 later in the year depending on pricing and launch games etc so my wallet would welcome lack of competition for my funds
I'm sorry but why would anyone believe Nintendo on this? They say the same thing every time there are rumours of a new console, and a month or two later they always end up announcing one anyway.
I get not believing rumours, but it's hardly like Nintendo themselves can be trusted either.
@HardcoreDaBoss Yeah there are people who care abou big budget graphics and people who care about game design creativity. Nintendo target the former. Stay on your PS4 we don't want you.
@glaemay you do realize that there is more to powerful consoles than better graphics right?
I'd really like a dock expansion that raises the quality of games on the TV. Higher resolutions and framerates in docked mode would be much more preferable than having to buy a whole new switch. It would avoid splitting the user base too.
Now, can we please stop the rumours and just start enjoying the great games that are on this super platform?
Awesome~!!
I love Nintendo for their creativity. Limited hardware often push developers creativity to different places, which often brings cool games/
I am all in for longer lifespan of consoles. Especially Nintendo ones
Focus on good games. Stretch it out, squeeze what you can from the current generation.
@Mogster Nope. Big budget graphics always sacrifice the creativity of gameplay. It's how these big studios work. They abandoned the freedom of game designers long ago. That's why Link in Breath of the Wild can do more diverse physical actions than every protagonists of big budget blockbusters from the last 5 years added.
@glaemay yeah you’re funny.. I don’t own a PlayStation, I own a switch with around 60 games. I may be a huge Nintendo fan and all but I’m honest about things when it comes to gaming. If your fanboy damage controlling heart can’t take my honesty on Nintendo needing improvements then I don’t know what to tell you. All you had to do was skip my honest comment.
@BarefootBowser it’s true they will always come to systems with a good install base at first.. but look at the wii as an example that more power for developers is very important. Most 3rd party abandoned the Wii system even with its install base..
The third party games also sell worse on switch than the Xbox or PS in most cases as well. Another example is all of the 3rd party games getting delayed, or outsourced for someone else to get it to run. I don’t care about graphics, I just want my games to be able to run at good frame rates, without huge sacrifices, and at an acceptable resolution.
That’s not too much to ask since Nvidia has had better mobile chips since switch launched in 2017. People can talk about a pro version would separate the install bases, pro only games.. But Xbox pulled it off and PS.. every single game works on the old consoles for them.. if people don’t want the upgrade then they don’t have to get it, they can play at lower frame rates and graphics..
Good! This is the right move for Nintendo to see how the other two companies respond before taking the final word
@HardcoreDaBoss wanting is fine. Insinuating obligations isn't. You can always find 1080p 60 fps in the domains you literally just referenced, just without Switch's exclusives or strengths. Or do people shame laptops for not comparing to the price/performance ballpark of desktop rigs as well?
"Please understand"(tm) that Nintendo is long aware of everything in your comment - but the NEED to "step up their game" therein is what they evidently have a different opinion on. And they are entitled to it every bit as much as we fans love defending the entitlement to ours.
@BarefootBowser GBA didn't even reach 50 million (although DS's success and backward compatibility may have had quite a say in that). Didn't prevent people from trying to squeeze games like Crazy Taxi and Driver 3 into its hardware (whereas franchises like Castlevania all but MOVED to the platform back then). And before that, we had Game Boy Color with honest-to-God ports (quality notwithstanding) of GTA 1 and 2, Heroes of Might & Magic, Alone in the Dark... Portability is portability, and a userbase is a userbase.
@Grumblevolcano I hope you are right as Wind Waker definitely needs to come to the Switch. It is my favourite game of all time.
@HardcoreDaBoss Maybe you should buy a PS5? As for you wanting voice chat, Nintendo are unwilling to have small children exposed to the horrors of verbal abuse that comes with it, this would damage their reputation and brand.
Would love a joycon revision but I don't need 1080p or 60 frames. I am hoping for some high quality 1st party games, like BOTW, with years of development behind them. Hopefully there are a few of those being developed in secret.
It’s strange to me that they’d release a pared-down model of an already technologically-compromised console, but not work on an update that bridges the gap a bit. That seems backwards. I see zero appeal in the Lite.
@sanderev In the article you linked to Furukawa is definitely talking about a true successor such as a Switch 2, not something like the Switch light that came out last year. Most people like to comment "why you always lying Nintendo" when articles like this come out, but if you go back and carefully read what Nintendo says you'll find that they're often very careful with their wording and very rarely actually lie.
Nintendo actually stated they have no plans to release a new model this year!?? That can only mean one thing as far as Nintendo statements go! Switch Pro model this year confirmed!
Sure they won’t be releasing it this year but March 2021 sounds likely.
I don’t think Nintendo needs a “Pro” this year. Xbox & PS4 wont launch until the end of the year, which means Nintendo can continue to dominate sales for the next 3 quarters. Then maybe in the 4th quarter of next year, they can drop a “Pro” to regain momentum after the next generation launch. Sell the new Switch alongside the Lite & OG to fill all needs. Maybe $149, $249 & $349.
That statement does seem pretty final for this round. Tbh I doubted any Switch Pro would show up this year. Both models are still doing really well; I could see a new revision coming (possibly next year) when sales start lagging.
If any new hardware does show up, I suspect it'll be a quiet revision like the V2 Switch.
@HardcoreDaBoss
I agree.
I'm ok with a 4 year cadence but that would be the longest I think they should string it out.
It's a cellphone; that tech moves lightspeed. N needs to get on the train and quit being so stupid about everything they do.
My inner child cries but I'd love it if N just became a software shop and put the games out on PC/PS4/XB. I don't think they need to be a hardware company anymore. They don't have the management or the chops to do it. The SNES was the end of their heady hardware days imo.
Doesn't surprise me, they kept selling the horribly under power 3ds systems for a really long time before the switch. Nintendo thrives on under powered hardware, they never push the envelope.
Even if they are planning on releasing a new model, they wouldn't tell us until shortly before launch. Otherwise, they run the risk of losing out on sales. It's a business after all.
@sanderev sorry its not going to happen period were talking about nintendo here they are not in a rush to put out a beef up mid upgrade switch and besides any major upgrades in specs are going to be in switch 2.
@HardcoreDaBoss But my comment was honest. If you care about big budget graphics then sell your switch and go buy a PS4. You are not the target audience of Nintendo. Nintendo games are directed by game designers, the big graphics blockbusters aren't. There's enough diversity on the market for everyone. Go away this is better for you.
Good, I hope they stick to that. I’m sick of console revisions.
To bad, i was really looking forward to pro version, i really dont like the fps in some games, and better graphs is always fun .
I knew they wouldn’t, but I don’t blame them. I don’t think it’s time yet, 2021-22 will be the time as the games yet to be released on switch are going to be huge.
Oh, "no plans" - that settles that then!
So, should we talk about Pokemon?
@Grumblevolcano Please bring wind waker hd Nintendo! I'm one of the few who didn't play it..... Botw2 seems too soon...
Believing this uncritically because this would be otherwise acceptable PR:
"Hi, I'm your local Nintendo representative! It would be wise to avoid purchasing a Nintendo Switch until the holiday season. We are releasing a new model, and we wouldn't want consumers making uninformed purchases since a superior one is due to release soon!"
Here's the thing as others mentioned you really think NIN is going to give their plans out to you? No, they are smarter then that. They said no Plans that isn't the same as no new upcoming models. That more or less tells you they have a upgraded Switch in the works or in Developer testing already. They are using semantic of words and that is clearly easy to see there is a New model in the works. Until they clearly state NO NEW MODELS then every Trolls can go home happy.
This was an interesting quote I found toward the end of Nintendo's FY Q3 2019 presentation material:
"Supported by a broad base of consumers, the Nintendo Switch business was able to continue to perform well in its third holiday season. March of 2020 will mark three full years since the launch of Nintendo Switch and the start of its fourth year of sales. According to the conventional wisdom for dedicated video game platforms, Nintendo Switch should be entering the midway phase of the hardware lifecycle. But we believe we have built a foundation on which we can pursue further growth opportunities for Nintendo Switch."
Nintendo implies that the start of the 4th year of sales may not be the "midway phase" of the Switch's lifecyle. In other words, Nintendo intends to support the Switch for longer than what "conventional wisdom" would suggest, which means the Switch 2 isn't coming anytime soon (and certainly not in 2021/2022).
@MasterJay They sure did because people for whatever reason are fascinated with being fleeced. Now some will try to argue they said this and then released the Lite... Except the Lite isn't an upgraded model. Nintendo specifically said they had no plans to release an upgraded model. Why people still believe one is coming is ridiculous. The Pro and X were absolutely not necessary and anti-consumer, a Pro model is not something you should support.
Well duh, (slaps em upside the head)
@Moistnado I think I’m good I own a switch and a gaming PC. But chatting is needed, I can’t even play games with friends unless I know them in person. There’s also something called child accounts, and privacy filters to where kids don’t get msgs or chat invites. Xbox has a similar thing they do
@glaemay when did I say anything about big budget graphics? And also what’s with you and wanting people to get a ps5 lol.. anyways nothing you said relates to my comments I will comment no further to you. I said the truth and you couldn’t handle that..
@RiasGremory it does not. They said the same thing last year. There is not a revision and the lite.
So, they said the same thing literally two months before the switch lite. Do with that what you will
@SwitchForce Again, you got it. They literally did this a few months ago with the switch lite
@Tyranexx They said there was no new models last year and then three months later they announced the switch lite. And technically the revision would be a new model. New processor, different model number, different model. Thats two against this being completely true.
@Xansies I believe that was more along the lines of "Nothing to announce at E3", which they were pretty adamant about; a lot of the buzz around that time expected the Switch Lite to show up then. The V2 wasn't something they got too excited over either. It was a pretty quiet release other than the packaging differences that some gaming outlets caught onto. The rumors around that time were more concrete, I'd say.
"Nothing to announce at this time" is pretty common from Nintendo, I'll give you that. But when they amend "this year" to that sort of statement, especially in front of investors, I find that a little more final. I could see them getting into a few details about another silent revision, but I doubt any fanfare for a true new model will show up this year. I personally think 2021 is a better possibility.
I'd love to be proven wrong, of course, but I also don't like putting much behind rumors, particularly those with little evidence, as many turn out to be untrue. We'll see!
When Nintendo officially denied some rumour, that means its happening, trust me
@sanderev In that quote, Furukawa said, "We are not considering a successor or a price drop at this time." He was right, since there were no successors to the Switch nor a price drop in 2019. There were the Switch Lite and a revisioned Switch, but none of those were the successor, like a Switch 2. In this quote, Nintendo said, "Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model in 2020." That was an emphatic statement. There will be no new Switch models of any kind in 2020, unless you believe that Nintendo will release a Switch successor with a different model name not "Switch" only 3 1/2 years after the Switch was released?
@Investor9872 Tech moves on you know what was new in computers is old 6 months later. They don't have to follow your timeline especially when the new Tech is there to use. To not use or not take advantage of it is Foot in Mouth syndrome itself.
@SwitchForce I have no timeline. I want a Pro just as much as the next guy. We were debating Nintendo's latest announcement. And my thoughts were that they were quite clear in their wordings that there will be no new Switch hardware in 2020.
@HardcoreDaBoss child accounts won't stop the tabloid tales about children facing abuse and grooming online. There were even articles about how abuse rings were using pictochat on DS. The smartphone app means only kids old enough to have phones can use it. I don't mind this app at all as I personally don't want to chat with people I don't know, especially when they would most likely be very young. Child safety, and Nintendo retaining its family friendly image is more important than casual banter with strangers.
I have no plans to take a dump today but it could happen.😜
They are probably being secretive and really mean FY20, which is until the end of March. Then it's open season!
Who believes Nintendo at this point? They deny everything until the official confirmation.
It's interesting that the original model sold less during its third year than during its second year. Momentum was gone quite soon.
If true good but given when Switch releases they could let it get one more solid year and then do another March release of the optional pro update then in 2021 and not hurt themselves.
@Investor9872 The Switch lite is cheaper than the OG Switch. Which means a price drop..
@Moistnado I support all of that to an extent. I just wish when I was on splatoon 2, MHUG, and some other coop style games that I could msg friends or invite. I really only play Splatoon 2, MHGU, and some realm Royale with my 10 yr old as far as online multiplayer .. those are my most played. Overall I’m very satisfied with every Nintendo exclusive, I think it’s the most fun console around today.
I never understood all of this, hardware is continually made. Sony for instance are making the ps5 and then ps6 then 7 then 8 then 9. You heard it here first. Let’s just enjoy games x x x x x x x x x
@Investor9872 they just said no plans that's quit different from saying no new models in production.
@sanderev The Switch lite is cheaper than the OG Switch. Which means a price drop..
Also it's smaller and attached Joy-Cons reduces the prices as well. So there are many factors making it less expensive. This reply is cheapening the price of the Lite value that has alot of things going for it.
They gave us a Switch and recently a Switch Lite. What do we need another one for?
@Tempestryke yea and one likes to be in third place right.
