Re: Nintendo Is Ranked The Third Most Sought-After Employer In Japan

RetroGames

@PessitheMystic Aye, but I'm still curious as to whether they have initiatives in place for old farts that do have the skillz to pay the billz. They didn't mention that in the press quote--although they did make sure to mention initiatives for people in same sex marriages--so I still don't know.

Or are initiatives for old people, of which almost every person on Earth will be at some point, not quite as important as making sure the things they listed are considered, which obviously they deem as very important and relevant to all the budding Nintendo employees out there.

It's actually a serious question given the times we live in, with all the focus on presumably authentic diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the way this kind of stuff is going.

Because real diversity, equity, and inclusion should mean a large percentage of the newly recruited workforce is indeed old farts, if it's authentically about truly-genuine diversity, equity, and inclusion--right.

But, of the three or so things they deemed important enough to mention in that press quote, their initiatives for old fuddy-duddies wasn't one of those unfortunately, which is strange given old folks is the fastest growing demographic across the board.

@Solomon_Rambling "1 in 10 people in Japan identify within the LGBTQ+ community"

Sure, if you say so.

And I presume your position is that stat, be it true or fake, is more important and relevant to the vast majority of Japan's population of people looking for employment than everything I mentioned, thus it's mention in the press quote over all of the other stuff I listed, which was my entire point.

Now, obviously I disagree and think those other things are far more relevant and important to most people looking for a job, even in Japan where "1 in 10 people in Japan identify within the LGBTQ+ community", apparently.

Re: Nintendo Is Ranked The Third Most Sought-After Employer In Japan

By the way:

“Of course, Nintendo’s comprehensive benefits play a role in this. They have a high rate of paid vacation utilization, offer strong support for parenting, and have a unique point system for employees that can be used for games, books, travel, and more."

Applies to almost everyone at some point, so I can understand how that would make the company rate so highly in such a survey.

"They also have a deep understanding of diversity and have introduced a partnership system that allows employees with same-sex partners to be treated as if they were married, among other progressive and practical initiatives."

Such a minority consideration, especially in Japan, that I highly doubt that's a genuinely significant factor as to why people rated the company so highly. And it's strange to see it specifically singled out and mentioned beside those other things, especially when there's surely so many other things the company does and offers that I am 100% sure apply to far more of the current and potential workforce there.

What about stuff like the sector and types of projects and areas of work within the company people can apply for, flexibility in working times, proper overtime consideration, parking and access, how close housing is and how close the schools are, the various travel options to be able to get there easily, what kind of training programs they have if any, how upward mobility is considered and supported, pension schemes, etc.

But I guess this is indicative of the times we're living in that some total niche consideration that's irrelevant to 99.99% of employees is highlighted in the press quote, while a whole bunch of things that are genuinely relevant and important to 99.99% of employees aren't.

Here's a personal question that I know is also far more relevant to far more people than their initiatives around people who are married to someone of the same sex: What's Nintendo's policy on employing old farts like me, and what are their initiatives around that?

And I'm not talking about people who have been there for decades already and have simply aged with the company, but people applying for new jobs now who are say older than 50. Because, hey, I'd like a job there, but I'm quite old you see.

Or is being old/older not quite as worthy of discussion and initiative consideration in our modern diverse, equitable, and inclusive employment society as some things that are far more niche yet seem to garner a massively disproportionate amount of consideration and attention these days?

I'm genuinely curious on that one.

Re: Nintendo Is Ranked The Third Most Sought-After Employer In Japan

I would have loved to have worked for Nintendo back in the day. Probably would still now. But I don't have quite enough demonstrable skill and talent in whatever gaming related area to be able to ever get that gig methinks. And I'm piss old now too, so I'm probably past the point of being relevant as compared to all the young folks coming out of university with degrees in game design and programming and stuff. Shame, because I actually think I could have a lot to offer them in the right role.

Re: Random: A New Sega Genesis Cart Has Been Created For The Sonic 3 Movie

RetroGames

@Switcher2023 The actual quality of what's there says otherwise to me.

Does the actual Sonic 3 game come included, or is it literally just a bunch of low quality digitised images and such?

Edit: Actually, the video says it's a full playthrough, so it would seem that's literally all that's on the cartridge. Seems like a total waste of plastic to me. But each to their own.

Re: It's Official, 'Switch 2' Will Be Backwards Compatible

RetroGames

Is that because, at least from every rumour I've seen and heard, it's just another frikin' iteration of the Switch that might as well just be a Switch Pro basically.

If that's what Switch 2 is, I personally will think of it as the most disappointing "next generation" console from the one previous in Nintendo's history on the face of it, unless there's something very special going on in that jump from Switch 1 to Switch 2.

For me personally, "Switch 2" can't just be the same thing but with a bit more power and a few minor tweaks to the physical design. That's not the "next generation" after Switch to me--it's like going from the DS Lite to the DSi.

Re: Nintendo Lowers Its Hardware Forecast As Switch Sales Slow To A Crawl

RetroGames

@Maxz They should, and not because of some childish and immature concept of "console warrists", but because Sony has been able to claim the most successful gaming system of all time for decades, and that's a great accolade to be able to write about and put in the Guinness Book of World Records and have for posterity and use as a future advertising tool and so on. No great company is afraid of being called biggest and best at something. It's ludicrous to believe otherwise. And any proud and successful games company that has a realistic shot at being on the top of the Best Selling Console of All Time list would only be smart to try and get there with all its might imo. There's a reason award shows and world records and lists of all 10/10 reviews and industry accolades and so on exist, and we don't have pretend this stuff doesn't matter to Nintendo or its fans with fake virtue signalling, like Nintendo or is fans are somehow above such things. Any smart business person would see the value in this achievement without a second thought or explanation needed. It would be a brilliant way to finish the Switch's life, the cherry on top and a very powerful single focal statement of where Nintendo is at in the industry, and Nintendo should absolutely shoot for it.

I would be so happy if this actually turns out to be a great ninja film. It's been sooo long since we've had a great Ninja film. Remember when ninjas were like huge back in the '80s-'90s. Let's make ninjas a big deal again!

Re: Pour One Out For The Modchip Seller Facing Nintendo In Court Alone

RetroGames

@HeadPirate Like I said, let's see how it plays out for this guy.

And I would like the DMCA to be challenged a million more times, particularly as it pertains to this case and similar cases around modding hardware [and emulators and longplays and the like too], as well as any laws around it that are propping it up and making it harder to obliterate certain aspects of it out of all existence.

Same goes for the EULA(s) also mentioned in this case.

PS. Do you work as legal representation for Nintendo or any party directly or indirectly associated with this case that would be affected by the ruling in this case?

Re: Pour One Out For The Modchip Seller Facing Nintendo In Court Alone

RetroGames

@HeadPirate Hey, I guess we'll see how it all plays out, eh.

But, I'll tell you this, the law as stated doesn't go completely unchallenged no matter what in this guy's universe (me).

Maybe it does in yours though, and each to their own.

Edit: And, if he's not challenging the DMCA in this particular case, maybe he should. I think it's a long time due.

Re: Pour One Out For The Modchip Seller Facing Nintendo In Court Alone

RetroGames

@HeadPirate You can spout laws all you want, but there have been plenty of cases in history that have been successful even with random laws being spouted, and some that have even caused certain laws to be overturned because they were found to be in violation of other laws and rights and so on. So, again, let's see. That's what cases like this are all about. No one has won or lost this case yet, at least not that I'm seeing. I mean, we ain't talking about a judgement but about something going to trial or wherever it goes in such cases.

I'll just cite you one example that's funny, which is when Universal sued Nintendo for violating its Trademark of King Kong. And, after however long fighting back and forth, Nintendo's lawyer at the time, Howard Lincoln, managed to prove that not only did Universal not legally own the Trademark for King Kong as claimed, but it was Universal itself in a prior case they won that proved King Kong was in fact in the public domain at that point. They literally provided the evidence that defeated them in the current case in a prior case where they themselves used the exact opposite legal argument--hilarious:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_City_Studios,_Inc._v._Nintendo_Co.,_Ltd.#:~:text=In%20the%20decision%2C%20rendered%20on,reckless%20disregard%20of%20Nintendo's%20rights.

Don't just automatically believe what the corporate giant tells you simply because they sound like they're coming from some place of authority. Universal was the corporate giant parading its authority in that King Kong case. Nintendo is the corporate giant parading its authority now.

Just something for everyone in here to ponder and smile at.

Re: Pour One Out For The Modchip Seller Facing Nintendo In Court Alone

RetroGames

I wish him all the best. I actually want these corporations to be taken down a peg or two around the whole right to mod consoles and create emulators and so forth.

@TyroKith It's actually the reverse imo, especially if he can save an absolute fortune by doing everything himself. His only real challenge here is learning as much about the laws around all this stuff as humanly possible. That's his best chance of having any kind of chance here.

@HeadPirate Why don't you actually wait for the judgements before proclaiming him a criminal.

This is literally the entire point in him going to court surely, to fight the charges and currently one-sided accusation and narrative that he's not allowed to modify console hardware and/or provide custom chips for running ROMs and such. And, on the face of it, I think he should absolutely be allowed to do that personally, just on a purely morally fair level or whatever. He's not the one pirating games as part of his business (one would assume), and it's entirely possible to play legal indie/homebrew games on such modded systems without ever touching a Nintendo IP. So it's on Nintendo to prove that modifying its hardware in any capacity is entirely illegal and/or that making chips that allow people to play Switch-compatible games is entirely illegal. And, I'll put it like this, there's currently countless perfectly legal clone NES and SNES systems and various NES and SNES emulators out there as I type.

So, before acting like some shill for your corporate overlords, maybe wait and see what side the actual law comes down on. And then you can preach all you want.

Re: Mario Movie Actor Says Second Film Is "Very Exciting So Far"

RetroGames

Bring it on.

The first movie has honestly grown to be one of my most loved movies of all time.

I can't wait for the next one.

Now, I'm not going to imagine I will enjoy it as much or that it will be as kinda perfect as the first movie, but that's all good.

I think it's going to be a very big hit.

Re: Gimmick! 2 (Switch) Review: A Fluid, Feel-Good Platformer That Lives Up To Its Name

RetroGames

For me it completely suffers because it has the whole "Flash/smartphone/GameMakerTutorial" look to it, which I honestly just do not like for the most part. There's a way to do old-school pixel art in modern high-res 2D that still works despite the technical upgrade--and actual sticking with proper pixel art but just having it either multiple scaled or viewed in a larger screen estate can also work very well too--but this isn't it imo. So, for me, it's a no go.

Re: New TMNT: Mutants Unleashed Gameplay Trailer Is Packed With Bodacious Brawling

RetroGames

Looks like it could be pretty decent, and I think largely because they've leaned into the visual style they went with in the recent movie.

Side point: I thought Across the Spider-Verse visually looked crap, with some extremely lazy art and animation in places, and was waaay overhyped. Whereas I actually thought that Turtles movie looked really good artistically and was rather overlooked by comparison.
