Re: Editorial: Is This a Golden Era of Gaming? Absolutely

RedMageLanakyn

I agree, and (un)fortunately my backlog of high quality games continues to grow on multiple platforms, even though my time to play games has gotten to be less and less. For those of you out there that are still young; enjoy your free time to play games all night. When you get older, get a career, get married, and have kids, you might find yourself wishing you had just one more hour of free time to play games before you have to start the cycle over again!

Re: Sony's Jim Ryan Reiterates Praise for Nintendo's Resurgence With the Switch

RedMageLanakyn

@BAN Except that Nintendo DOES do those exact same things. You going to try and convince me mario games haven't been the same with graphical upgrades? Mario kart games? Zelda games? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, as the gameplay formulas are solid, but don't even try to pretend that nintendo is exempt from upgrading visuals and slapping a "new" in front of a game to sell at retail.

Re: Project AM2R Creator Earns Job Working on Ori and the Will of the Wisps

RedMageLanakyn

Good to know his hard work and talents were recognized by someone out there, enough to offer him a job at least. Nintendo hasn't made a good metroidvania since Super Metroid, let's hope they still know how to do it and hired the right team. Games like Ori, Axiom Verge, and Hollow Knight have really stepped up to define and refine the metroidvania formula.

Re: Hyperkin Reveals HDMI SNES Clone, The Supa RetroN HD

RedMageLanakyn

@Damo Technically I'd say there's 3 groups; Group A would want the SNES mini because they have no interest in collecting old carts and want to play the games in HD.
Group B would want the Hyperkin because they have the carts and want to play them in HD.
Group C has carts, but wants the SNES mini as a collectible.

I don't see them as competing against each other at all really, because one is software, one is cart based. Both feed on nostalgia, but one requires you to have additional hardware. If you want to count the people from Group C, which would probably be less than a percent, that wants to pick between one or the other, i guess you could.

Re: Walmart Cancels All Super NES Classic Pre-Orders

RedMageLanakyn

Awfully convoluted process for it to be a glitch. Emails went out, preorder went up, cards were charged, and they're like "oops, none of that should've happened, you lose". I hope some jobs are lost over this, pretty unprofessional to let it go on this long before canceling them all.

Re: Here's What Those Lovely New amiibo Do In Metroid: Samus Returns

RedMageLanakyn

@Bustacap I don't really see how that could be construed as pirating, i'm not stealing the toys out of the stores, and they haven't really given out the DLC in other, easier ways. If nintendo offered NFC cards at a lower price I would buy them, but since they don't, and it hasn't been deemed illegal or blocked by firmware, I consider it fair game.

Re: Talking Point: Splatoon 2's Salmon Run Shows Off the Switch's Local Multiplayer Strengths

RedMageLanakyn

Sounds like a big distraction piece from the fact that two people can't play on one switch, which to me is a pretty big omission on Nintendo's part. I still have yet to see an actual switch being played in public, in a mall, on the street, etc, so the situation presented seems like a very, very rare scenario.

Why again is salmon mode limited? Did they give a reason for that, or is it just nintendo being nintendo? So many odd choices they make really keep me on the fence about buying a switch.

Re: Review: Splatoon 2 (Switch)

RedMageLanakyn

@OorWullie I've played arms, but not online, only local fights. I've watched a friend play and in two of the three fights, an opponent would disconnect in the middle of the match. Whether it was rage quit or an actual disconnect, can't be sure, but it was present.

It will be interesting to see what direction Nintendo takes next year, once more switches start rolling out, more online games come out, higher server load, etc. Hopefully the paid for service allows for some upgrades on their end.

Re: Review: Splatoon 2 (Switch)

RedMageLanakyn

@Kalmaro Could be, haven't really been able to nail it down. Lots of disconnects from lobbies/games in MK8, SSB4, and the few hours I played the original splatoon, it would take upwards of 5 minutes to get into a game. Just haven't experienced those types of problems on other platforms, so it really stands out to me.

Re: Review: Splatoon 2 (Switch)

RedMageLanakyn

Salmon mode looks interesting, too bad it's not split screen. Will be interesting to see how the game performs online once the servers start filling up.

I certainly won't be "eating my words" about Nintendo's online performance, because for me almost every game I've played online has been a subpar experience compared to other platforms.

Re: Editorial: In Praise of the Smaller New Nintendo 3DS - The Best 3DS*

RedMageLanakyn

I had to get a wide grip accessory for my N3DSXL, so I can't even imagine trying to hold onto a smaller version. The rainbow colors don't really do anything for me either. Even with added grips to joycons, the Switch still isn't comfy for me past the 10 minute mark. I think I'm just over handhelds in general, give me a controller dang it!
