I could do without the gore, but overall it looks pretty good. I just hope the gameplay isn't an annoying struggle of having to constantly jump on and off your bike to get through certain areas. That can get old fast.
I haven't played a Monkey Ball game since the original way back on Gamecube. It just seemed like one of those franchises that's "played one, played them all," you know? But I actually feel like getting back into it. I might actually get this new one.
Just got my copy. Never played the original so it's a new game to me. Only played a couple levels so far but I'm liking it so far. I especially dig the cool jazz background music.
The Switch is still selling and Nintendo would be fools to pull the plug on it. And why? Because a few nerds on the internet are unhappy with its specs?
@Yoshif3 I Get what you're saying, and I think this sort of thing is fine every once in a while, but I still say art style matters more than graphics.
Look at the upcoming Penny's Big Breakaway. The game looks VERY nostalgic, even though it uses modern graphics. I think what people are really "nostalgic" for are those colorful characters and vibrant worlds, not making a game look dated on purpose.
@Yoshif3 Well for me it depends on what we're talking about. Some things were better in the past, some things weren't. For example, would you want a game today where you couldn't save?
I think some graphics from the past are good, like the 16-bit era, but the N64/PS1/Saturn era was by far the ugliest era in terms of visuals imo, and it's an era I don't feel we need to return to.
@NinjaNicky I pretty much agree. If this game had modern graphics it would look stunning. What makes a game beautiful is the art style, not the polygon count.
Looks pretty good, though I'm getting a little tired of everything having N64-era graphics. I would like to see some Dreamcast/PS2-era graphics get used in more games.
I really don't understand this sort of cultural "belief" in the gaming community that we're supposed to honor, respect, or admire pirates for some reason. They're seen by some as sort of digital "Robin Hoods," taking from the horrible "greedy corporations" and giving it to the little guy.
I think it's silly because we're not talking about anything important or life-threatening here, we're talking about video games. I don't know what to tell ya, man. Maybe don't steal.
@woodenbard The ultimate irony to me is Palworld is never talked about without Pokemon being mentioned or brought up somewhere in the conversation. It can't stand on its own! The people who defend it are the very people who dubbed it "Pokemon with guns." Just silly.
The only people who have a "problem" with Pokemon are the 40-something-year-olds who have been with the series from the beginning. They feel that the series should change and evolve with their personal tastes, failing to realize that Pokemon has always been for a younger audience and is not for you anymore.
Funny how something as simple as multiple color options can attract people to your product. It's something I don't think MS and Sony ever really figured out. So simple, yet very effective.
@epicgamner Yeah, that's my only real issue with it, which is why I check the 'Recent Releases' section daily. That way, I only have to scroll down a little bit to see what's new, then I'm done.
@smithyo When I said I pay no attention to it, I meant in the sense that I don't feel offended or bothered by its existence.
That I could easily ignore it if I so choose, since it's so easy to recognize (at least to me it is). Hope I cleared that up.
And also, I'm glad th shovelware is there, I like to buy it from time to time, and play them just for laughs. I'd rather have the gaming ecosystem we have, where a few ugly ducklings are allowed to exist in the pond, rather than a squeaky clean eshop where everything is the same.
I simply pay no attention to the shovelware. You can spot it from a mile away. I can usually tell something is shovelware by the thumbnail alone or even the name. The people who act all "offended" by the presence of shovelware on a system never cease to make me laugh.
And hey, we're living in the age of the internet. There's simply no excuse now. You can find the quality games easily and ignore the shovelware completely if you really want to. There are plenty of sites, videos, lists, etc. that showcase only the quality Switch games and completely ignores the garbage. Stop acting like shovelware legitimately hinders your gaming experience.
You know what, I tried this game upon release and couldn't get into it. I know this will sound like a silly nitpick, but I don't like that your character turns into the monster. I dunno what it is, but something about summoning monsters to fight on your behalf just hits different, feels better, cooler. That one little detail put me off the game.
But this article has inspired me, I may give the game another shot at some point. Maybe I'll get used to the transformation thing with time.
Am I the only one who doesn't like the art style of the new Jet Set game? Looks like they're going for a more "realistic" look, but the original games funky cartoon style was a huge part of its charm! But I digress...
I'd like a 3D Ristar game, a new Space Channel 5, Oh, and Knuckles needs his own game, he's due.
Been playing a little of this outdoors on Switch. There's something about playing an outdoorsy game like this, in the actual outdoors, that's REALLY relaxing. I highly recommend it.
The train heist mission in Final Fantasy 8. I love that game and have played it countless times, but I die a little inside every time I get to that part.
Thing is, it's not the early '90s anymore. It's 2023 and people have moved on. There have been many, MANY RPGs released since Super Mario RPG that are way better games (not to mention cheaper than 60 bucks, heck, you can get FF7 for a fraction of the price), so Mario RPG just doesn't have the same allure and appeal it used to.
It's like if they were to release Tetris in 2023 and wonder why it's not setting the world on fire like it did back in the '80s.
Yes, really. I sort of bought this game on a goof, because it was on sale. But it's actually a surprisingly fun little arcade style rhythm game. And the music slaps! It's really good! Way better than it has any right to be!
I liked everything in Origins EXCEPT the combat. I liked the exploring, the puzzles, the visuals, the story, collecting stuff, but didn't care for the battles. And I have a feeling they felt the same during testing, which is why you can go into the options menu and basically nuke the combat system (turn off damage, make enemies super easy, etc.). I honestly think it would be a better game if they had left out the combat entirely and just made it an adventure/puzzle platformer. It's still a good game though and I enjoyed my time with it.
They should get that girl who played the voice of Princess Peach in the Mario movie. She actually looks like Zelda, and they already have her on the payroll.
Never got into the Steam Deck hype. The Switch is still my favorite modern handheld because it has a soul, an identity of its own. The Steam Deck just feels like a piece of tech, one that will be replaced the second something better comes along. That's cool if that's what you care about, but the Switch is just special to me.
I think about the movie 'Legend.' Don't know if you guys have seen that but it's the closest thing to a live action Zelda movie I can think of. Pretty good movie too, so if they can pull it off in the '80s, they can pull it off now!
I think they should do something along the lines of Link being a forest kid, raised in the wilderness, so he can't really talk. He's accompanied by Zelda for most of the film who does all the talking. That could work if done right.
Maybe it's just a tad bit too late in the system's life cycle for Mario to have that huge of an impact anymore. Just because the Switch has a large install base doesn't necessarily mean its owners play the system regularly (or at least, not as much as they used to). But even so, the game is selling well! Let's not dismiss that.

That's not a good thing. The only thing "Triple A" really means to me is bloated game packed with unnecessary padding and fluff.

It's funny too, because Nintendo was initially bashed for going that route.
