Re: Switch Is Getting Another N64-Inspired Platformer, And It Looks Great

@Yoshif3 I Get what you're saying, and I think this sort of thing is fine every once in a while, but I still say art style matters more than graphics.

Look at the upcoming Penny's Big Breakaway. The game looks VERY nostalgic, even though it uses modern graphics. I think what people are really "nostalgic" for are those colorful characters and vibrant worlds, not making a game look dated on purpose.

@Yoshif3 Well for me it depends on what we're talking about. Some things were better in the past, some things weren't. For example, would you want a game today where you couldn't save?

I think some graphics from the past are good, like the 16-bit era, but the N64/PS1/Saturn era was by far the ugliest era in terms of visuals imo, and it's an era I don't feel we need to return to.

I really don't understand this sort of cultural "belief" in the gaming community that we're supposed to honor, respect, or admire pirates for some reason. They're seen by some as sort of digital "Robin Hoods," taking from the horrible "greedy corporations" and giving it to the little guy.

I think it's silly because we're not talking about anything important or life-threatening here, we're talking about video games. I don't know what to tell ya, man. Maybe don't steal.

The only people who have a "problem" with Pokemon are the 40-something-year-olds who have been with the series from the beginning. They feel that the series should change and evolve with their personal tastes, failing to realize that Pokemon has always been for a younger audience and is not for you anymore.

Re: Nintendo Switch Was The Console With The Most Game Releases In 2023

I simply pay no attention to the shovelware. You can spot it from a mile away. I can usually tell something is shovelware by the thumbnail alone or even the name. The people who act all "offended" by the presence of shovelware on a system never cease to make me laugh.

And hey, we're living in the age of the internet. There's simply no excuse now. You can find the quality games easily and ignore the shovelware completely if you really want to. There are plenty of sites, videos, lists, etc. that showcase only the quality Switch games and completely ignores the garbage. Stop acting like shovelware legitimately hinders your gaming experience.

Re: Soapbox: Cassette Beasts Is The Monster-Catching RPG For A Disillusioned Pokémon Fan

You know what, I tried this game upon release and couldn't get into it. I know this will sound like a silly nitpick, but I don't like that your character turns into the monster. I dunno what it is, but something about summoning monsters to fight on your behalf just hits different, feels better, cooler. That one little detail put me off the game.

But this article has inspired me, I may give the game another shot at some point. Maybe I'll get used to the transformation thing with time.

Re: UK Charts: Super Mario RPG Tumbles Out Of The Top Ten

Rainbowfire

Thing is, it's not the early '90s anymore. It's 2023 and people have moved on. There have been many, MANY RPGs released since Super Mario RPG that are way better games (not to mention cheaper than 60 bucks, heck, you can get FF7 for a fraction of the price), so Mario RPG just doesn't have the same allure and appeal it used to.

It's like if they were to release Tetris in 2023 and wonder why it's not setting the world on fire like it did back in the '80s.

I liked everything in Origins EXCEPT the combat. I liked the exploring, the puzzles, the visuals, the story, collecting stuff, but didn't care for the battles. And I have a feeling they felt the same during testing, which is why you can go into the options menu and basically nuke the combat system (turn off damage, make enemies super easy, etc.). I honestly think it would be a better game if they had left out the combat entirely and just made it an adventure/puzzle platformer. It's still a good game though and I enjoyed my time with it.

Re: Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED, Says Switch OLED Paved The Way

Rainbowfire

Never got into the Steam Deck hype. The Switch is still my favorite modern handheld because it has a soul, an identity of its own. The Steam Deck just feels like a piece of tech, one that will be replaced the second something better comes along. That's cool if that's what you care about, but the Switch is just special to me.
