Re: Sony Does What Nintendon't By Removing A Bunch Of 'eSlop' Titles

I don't really think people thought that because of its origins. I saw the gameplay and before knowing who created the game, I thought that it's gonna end in court 100%. Like I said, it's a completely different matter if you copy towers, an attack, or any other single element. But Genshin copied literally 99% of how you interact with the environment from BOTW. It wasn't even an amalgamation of a couple of different games, it was taken from one single game that was very different than the rest, so there was no mistaking it.

Also it was the first chinese game that really hit it off with any other market, so there was no established prejudice in any way. There is of course a commonly known issue of the chinese companies stealing intellectual property on gargantuan, previously unimaginable scale, but none of the earlier games really made it big enough for anyone to care.

Given all the above, and I remember that situation pretty well, I can't really say we can be speaking about any double standards. Copycat games were always called out, like the "Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta" a plagiarism of Uncharted, or "Limbo of the Lost". But none of the other games gained this popularity and revenue, so they just enter through 1 ear and exit through the other.

@AstroTheGamosian I also played GI for a long time, since launch actually. I also played BOTW and an ungodly amount of other games. I am not saying that in a hostile manner and I appreciate your input, I just want to set the background of my opinion.

And I am going to be honest, I really like GI, but there are games inspired by others, and games that take the majority of the gameplay from 1 single other game. Genshin played very much like Zelda BOTW, and so many details were straight up replicated, from the climbing everywhere mechanic with climbing the trees and gathering fruit, to cooking in designated cooking points, to fire arrows and gliding, to the whole exploration along with treasure chests for solving tiny puzzles (relocating a stone so that it matches pattern on the ground).

Zelda was novel and invented many different things. It was super plastic and memorable for it. Sure, the towers were taken from Ubi (or probably from some earlier game that Ubi copied because Ubi replicates many things from the competitors), but for every thing that was borrowed, 10 more were novel and fresh.

I fully agree that worldbuilding (WB) and storytelling (ST) is very important (maybe not for racing games like Tokyo Xtreme, but even Wipeout had some worldbuilding with manufacturers). And GI has very nice WB and ST (I was so worried for Kachina that one time, I was so invested in that storyquest). Well maybe beside the fact that they casually dropped the biggest plottwist in a time limited event with the meteorites (I remember it to this day)

Do I play Genshin more than Zelda Botw? Definitely. But could Genshin even exist without Zelda Botw? I really don't think so.

On one hand, nice. Less clutter on the platform

On the other hand, where should the boundary lie? If you remove some games, even shovelware, there will always be a question of whether you should also remove other games that are not really... that fantastic. And there will always be someone that would have liked them.

Same with ripoffs. If you remove the last hope, should you also remove Genshin Impact for example?

@Wisps yeah, that's completely true. And I probably should have clarified that I don't think everyone should play difficult games only, but lowering the difficulty for every game just to get a better review score is ridiculous.

In Celeste, for example, difficulty level plays a huge role in storytelling. Moreover, if you have a long buildup to a boss that is supposed to be terrifyingly powerful, you can't just make him a wussy in the battle, or else the whole storytelling is falling apart

@Ogbert but did they hurt them bad? Didn't they jump back up when people got tired of boycotting and wanted to eat MacDonalds and drink bad coffee again? And were these boycotts rational to begin with? There was a really rational boycott targeted at companies that didn't move their operations away from Russia. There is no trace of that boycott anymore. They just come for a bit and disappear like fads. It's sad, but at the end of the day, they do nothing substancial judging by long term observations

@Maxz yeah I loved the main theme of the game being overcoming or even coming to terms with anxiety disorder through the alegory of climbing a mountain. And that it's hard. And that you have to get those strawberries or the choice of skipping them will leave you with even more anxiety and self doubt. The game showed me my anxiety as if it holding up a mirror right to my face. It genuinely helped me organize my thoughts and feelings. I loved the message.
