We've been awaiting the usual Media Create Japanese chart results, but due to Golden Week in Japan the data hasn't been forthcoming as yet. As we've had requests for what information is available, we've picked up the Famitsu magazine charts from earlier in the week to tide us over.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, predictably, made its debut in number one spot last week with 280,229 sales; that's a solid contribution to worldwide sales passing one million in its first week. That is less than Mario Kart 8 achieved back in Summer 2014, as it hit 325,892 sales on its Media Create debut, but by that point the Wii U had been on the market for a little over 18 months and had a larger userbase.
Beyond that we have Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X making a debut on 3DS in second place, while Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia lost a lot of momentum in its second week to sell 25,099 units and drop to third place. From a Nintendo perspective there are various evergreen releases further down the top 20, with Cube Creator DX being a new arrival (published by Arc System Works) on 3DS to come in at 13th place. The results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 280.229 (NEW)
- [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X - 92.809 (NEW)
- [3DS] Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia - 25.099 (158.509)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter Double Cross - 24.038 (1.544.724)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 17.085 (393.726)
- [3DS] Pro Baseball Famista Climax - 12.009 (55.581)
- [PS4] Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition - 10.427 (42.115)
- [PSV] Gun Gun Pixies - 8.794 (NEW)
- [NSW] 1-2-Switch - 6.768 (181.641)
- [3DS] Mario Sports Superstars - 5.649 (73.169)
- [PSV] Dungeon Travelers 2-2: The Maiden Who Fell into Darkness and the Book of Beginnings - 5.059 (35.963)
- [PSV] Hanasaki Work Spring! - 4.730 (NEW)
- [3DS] Cube Creator DX - 4.697 (NEW)
- [PS4] NieR: Automata - 4.654 (279.395)
- [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon - 4.030 (3.748.283)
- [PS4] Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands - 3.838 (172.758)
- [PSV] Tsuihou Senkyo - 3.712 (NEW)
- [PSV] Fate/Hollow Ataraxia [PlayStation Vita the Best] - 3.147 (NEW)
- [PS4] PaRappa the Rapper Remastered - 3.144 (9.198)
- [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki - 2.986 (707.148)
In terms of hardware we did see an increase in Switch sales thanks to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though it didn't get particularly close to the highs of six figures. Nevertheless the general hardware picture still looks reasonably good for Nintendo - details are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Nintendo Switch - 74.217 (40.367)
- PS4 + PS4 Pro - 24.756 (18.846)
- 3DS 'family' - 21.602 (21.685)
- PS Vita - 6.194 (5.414)
- PS3 - 353 (339)
- Wii U - 184 (376)
- Xbox One - 169 (73)
So those are the results published by Famitsu this week. We'll keep an eye out for the Media Create figures, though they'll likely arrive as part of a double set next week.

Xbox One making a resurgence...this is good news.
@WiltonRoots Yes - sales have more than Doubled this week!
Maybe Nintendo could politely request they stop reporting Wii U numbers. I know it's still outselling X1 but the PS3 is about 6 years older, just reminds me of how much more support PS3 got, but more annoyingly continues to get.
Good job on MK8D. Does Golden Week mean way more sales in next week's results? I'm wondering if they held back on Switch stock for the holiday.
@rjejr you can also say the same with PlayStation 2
Wow Nintendo Games 1-6 on chart, very good!
Nintendo system games almost locking out the Top 10, with 8 titles.
Nintendo selling more than twice as much hardware as Sony.
Good to see.
Good sales for the Switch. Big sales for the top 2 games, everything else is mediocre.
@WiltonRoots still selling less than PS3 and Wii U...guess Wii U wasn't a failure after all?
So glad nintendo market the switch so damn good
@Mr64 They've certainly done an excellent of it so far.
Nintendo just found a gold mine with the switch. And every AA game will enjoy it too. The first company who brings an AA first person shooter their bank account will explode lol.
Nintendo can boost the sales even more if they let chuck norris play the switch the Hype train explodes in an instant lol.
All Nintendo games are in the top 5, nice!
Yay... !!!
3DS needs a little bit Booster DX to outsell PS4 family.
Later, only 3DS Family & Switch are on the TOP Together.
Nintendo rules !
@manu0 You could say it certainly wasn't a failure in Japan, even though it didn't set the charts on fire either. The PS4 didn't overcome Wii U sales there until late 2016.
Why would you release Fire Emblem Echoes a week before MK8D?
I mean it's still doing well, but it kinda feels like a death sentence.
Clearly I'm the only one who still enjoys seeing Wii U sales figures lol I'm still hoping that it makes it to the next magical landmark digit of 14 million sold worldwide in its lifetime lol
@WiltonRoots That's actually really surprising, was there an XB1 game launch this week that could explain it?
@rjejr Nah, PS3 might be selling a few more units than WiiU, but PS3 was a popular system that was arguably as dead as WiiU until XBox abandoned X360 to chase the Wii Kinekt and handed the gen to Sony, so it gets an extended life as a result. WiiU is officially discontinued now, but when it wasn't it wasn't selling much below PS4 there. Showing it, a discontinued product who's replacement is #1, as still selling substantially above Microsoft's flagship is worth putting in print
If Sony Walkmans were still outselling iPhones, you know Sony would be printing that, even if they only sold 100 a week
Good point about Golden Week. We know where the May shipment went, I bet.....
Edit: Do the kids even know what a Walkman is? That it's synonymous with music on the go? What with the wrapping music and such? sigh
@NEStalgia Sony still pushed the Walkman monicker on some of their tiny mp3 players a couple years back still, and you still had the walkman logo on their phones just a few years back as well. In fact I remember some black Sony Xperia models had the orange Walkman logo on them because they came with a "Walkman" music app on them. I can't say about right now though. Haven't seen the logo used in recent memory
@NEStalgia "If Sony Walkmans were still outselling iPhones, you know Sony would be printing that, even if they only sold 100 a week "
Sony Walkmans probably aren't that far off from iPhone sales, though it's a bit of a strange thing to say since they're competing with the iPods. And by Walkmans I mean these: http://www.sony.com/electronics/walkman-digital-music-players/t/walkman
2nd Month hardware sales:
3DS (April 2011): 127,000
Wii U (January 2013): 62,000
Switch (April 2017): 203,000 (still sold out)
This should start to put an end to any "Switch is a Wii U 2" claims.
@LemonSlice They still sell Walkmans! That just made my day
What's golden week?
@Lord Think of it as Japanese Christmas. It's a week long celebration where most schools and many businesses close, and generally features gifting. It's technically their "big shopping holiday" in the way Christmas is in the West, though they DO do Christmas as well there, it's more for the fun of it while Golden Week is their "real" national holiday, technically a collection of back to back individual holidays, starting with what was the emperors birthday, constitution day, etc.
The Switch outsold every other system, combined. Another great week.
@Equinox
Your comment is complete conjecture BS. No hard feelings!
@Equinox
I think Nintendo has to supply more units to North America and Europe, given that both the Mario Kart franchise and the Switch itself are much more popular in the west than in Japan.
@NEStalgia Do the kids even know what a Walkman is?
Everybody does now, it's that hip retro MP3 player made famous in the movies.
