Update (Thu 24th Sep, 2020 07:45 BST): The day has arrived - Psyonix's Rocket League is now a free-to-play game across all platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
Admittedly there's been some teething issues, so if you encounter any problems, don't be surprised.
You can view the full patch notes over on the official Rocket League website.
Original article (Wed 16th Sep, 2020 01:55 BST): Psyonix has announced its insanely popular "soccar" game Rocket League will go free-to-play on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch, next week on 23rd September.
When it is finally made available to everyone, it will no longer require users to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership in order to play matches online. Here's the official cinematic trailer:
As part of this update, there'll also be revamped tournaments and challenges, the return of the Season 1 Rocket Pass, two new items packs (Endo Starter pack and Jager Pack), and a new in-game event called new in-game event called Llama-Rama.
Psyonix has also rolled out an update today - allowing existing players to link their platforms with their Epic Games Account. These same players will also receive Legacy Status Items.
Are you excited for Rocket League's free-to-play launch next week? Tell us down below.

That's a price I can afford!
Not needing Nintendo online is good too, though I wonder if that also cheapens owning Nintendo online.
I got this on the ps4 a long time ago and thank go I did not buy it on the switch, Its a really fun sports game and don't worry about it binge free its gonna be fun no matter what.
Well technically I've had it free since August because I played Rocket League on Xbox Game Pass.
Noice will get this. I’ve played it at a friend’s house and it is fun. Wish I was that good tho.
I mean, WHAT, ZERO DOLLARS!? I CAN'T AFFORD THAT!!!
@Apportal I know! How can they expect people to pay that much?
@HotGoomba Such greedy developers. They make more than enough through MTX; they should be paying us to play it!
I play Rocket League often, and this business of changing to free to play makes me nervous. I welcome a change for the better, if that's possible.
As long as the core game is the same and I don’t have to pay anything else I’m happy with this even though I did buy it at the start of the year
Is there any point in getting the physical edition anymore then?
Pretty much the best multiplayer game of this generation. If you haven't ever played it, you really should give it a shot now!
@OdnetninAges I guess it might count you as an "owner" or whatever and give you whatever those bonuses were that other paid players are going to get, but I'm not sure it was ever worth buying physical considering how many updates it gets.
Anyone with a banned switch just got some great news
I was happy to pay for it on Switch as I got it free on Playstation through PS+ and had hundreds of hours of entertainment from both versions. That said, great news for the consumer and all the best to Psyonix...
Never spent a penny on microtransactions though so hope they’re not changed to be more invasive...
everyone who bought the game for money ...should at least receive some kind of gift, like 6 months season pass for free or something
@eRaz0r I bought it 3 years ago and couldn't give a flying toss about the season pass nonsense. I play the game for the gameplay, who cares about some crappy cosmetic items that you don't even notice when you're in the action?
So is this free to play permanently? my boys asked me to buy it for their switch a few weeks ago,but if I don't have to then I won't 😉
@WoomyNNYes Like you, I play often and I wonder how the experience will change. I hope the servers can handle the extra traffic. Right now, my biggest gripe is waiting a minute or two for a match. That really is not a big deal, since I think the game is almost perfectly designed for what it is. We will see . . .
great game and amazing it will be free to play now on Switch. I hope to play against a few of you one day
The list of free to play online games keeps getting better and better. Two of the games I play the most are already free to play (Warface and Paladins).
If you can put up with Mario Kart 7 instead of 8, there's not much reason to bother with NSO unless you're still playing Splatoon or Smash online.
Free to play is rarely “free”. There is always a cost involved, just look at the pressure and scorn that kids felt by being “defaults” in Fortnite. There is also the time spent grinding to unlock stuff which keeps the game active and popular for the people who will spend money. Finally there is the advertising that is sold knowing there is a captive audience (be that of the company itself or a third party).
It’s not an evil thing, but one to be very aware of when engaging “free” services and games.
Will wait to see if the monetization is intrusive, but I might have to download it
Well, "All yours" I guess!
@HotGoomba Yeah the game IS overpriced. 0$ Is way to much for my liking! It's sad how greedy the devs are ;(. I thought they got enough money from Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars! (That's a real game)
@eRaz0r Everybody who bought the game does get some kind of gift, as they’ve previously explained.
@Shamrock Reviving from what? It’s as popular as ever.
@PlayedNSlayed Yes, it’s permanent. At least until a Epic pulls another move of some description, which is bound to happen sometime.
Legacy players can already play matches without Nintendo Switch Online! I tested it last night, noticed my free trial already ran out. That's a neat bonus, plus a nice pack of free cosmetics.
@PlayedNSlayed yep. It's permanently free.
@eRaz0r anyone who actually bought the game also has more cosmetics and vehicles, so it basically offsets the cost. The free version will probably only include a few vehicles/cosmetics to choose from, making people pay separately for the rest of the cars you would normally get in the retail version.
Surprised no one has commented on the split screen being unavailable on the switch with the new update. Favorite game to play with my daughter, hope they get it back soon. Not ideal. Also not loving the new menus. Update feels a little haphazard so far.
@BCMT Couldn't agree more about the menus. Why remove "quick play" and make the game less efficient?
Split screen is gone, anyone know when or if it's coming back?
I don’t mind it going free to play. I do mind that they took away split screen multiplayer on the Switch. That really sucks.... I originally bought it because I could play split screen with my kids. And now I cant
@jaguarr @evenmoresteven see my comment above. Split screen is killing me. My 6 year old and I play a few games almost every day. Wish they had a better update, you would think they wouldn’t let this happen. But maybe they are using this weeks mistakes to roll out a solid release next week. I did find on one obscure page of the rocket league support page that they know this is an issue and they are working to resolve it. Which I take as they are trying to get it back ASAP. I put a ticket in on their support page to try and get more info but nothing back yet. I keep checking back here, let me know if anyone hears anything!
My Xbox One savegame works fine on Switch, PC and PS4.
Some DLC stickers/flags? from Ultimate Edition on Xbox One works cross-platform like the Goonies, Shazaam etc.
@OdnetninAges nope. Even the paid edition gets updated to this version and in the process it gets stripped of it's local multiplayer option.
@Kreko yes
@BCMT it's disgusting if they dont bring it back. We paid for that feature. So far the free to play update has been one buggy slap in the face of it's old paying userbase.
Dumb question but does this run smoothly on Switch? Kinda find it suspicious it being free at all...
I don't mind the free to play stuff.. but why has switch had splitscreen removed. Its still available on other platforms. Epic have obviously broken it on switch. Its now listed as one player on the store listing. If they were removing it they should at least keep it for players that have purchased the game previously.
@HotGoomba According to my calculations, that's also zero in euro's, and the euro has a higher value, so now they're forcing me to get it on a free US account because in that currency, the same number is less then here. Scumbags.
It's like with these free demo's, suddenly locking any advancement behind a paywall you can't even grind through.
@Joriss It plays brilliantly on Switch and runs at 60fps.
@OorWullie Hmmm, guess I have to check if I can afford it...
da-dum-tsss
@Joriss runs amazing on switch. If uou play online you need a solid connection which was my only issue.
Its free cause they make money through in game purchases- no need to be suspicious
@OdnetninAges this a day one for me! Never played roceet leeg
I have downloads it yesterday but not keen on online multiplayer matches. Does anyone know if it has single player more? Is it worth?
@Balta666 It does have a single player career mode you can play against the CPU but there's not much to it. Just a basic league format, you set the conditions for ie 8 team league, play each opponent twice. It also has a training mode.
I played this game at a friends house, and found it fun, but not something I will give my 20 Bucks to, so yeah, free to play is nice. But that file size! How is it 10 gigabits of storage!?
@dil_power it seems like they are working to resolve it, or so their hard to find comment about it says on their support page. There is also still an option to change the split screen view in options so I am hopeful it comes back, but it’s crazy that something we explicitly paid for is getting such a slow fix. They seem more concerned with going free to play then giving the people what they paid for originally. Haphazard update.
@LatsaSpege Good question. 10 GB. Seems outrageously a lot for what you see.
@OorWullie thanks. I thought it would be something like that. I may give it a go when I am done with the Mario collection
I wish that everyone who paid for it before it became free was given a unique goal explosion to show off their legacy status.
@BCMT it's such a bad update ... And honestly it feels as though the omission was intentional to force people to play online. Even the epic account login looks compulsory until you switch off your wifi to get other options. Very forced and anti consumer for a product that loads of us paid for.
Bought this when it came out. Mainly played as local split-screen. Thanks for this update, Buzz Killington!
@eRaz0r Why? You got what you paid for, for literally years.
Besides, it was on PS+ the month it launched and has been dramatically reduced on a regular basis every since, so the vast majority of people who had it didn't pay for it.
It sucks that they removed splitscreen multiplayer,it was the main reason I enjoyed the game
@Iamark rocket league support page said they are working to fix splitscreen for the switch. Hopefully it will be back soon.
@dil_power agree completely. If split screen indeed comes back then I’ll be relieved. If not then this is just completely unacceptable. I just wish they’d be a little more transparent with telling us what’s going on. So far two tickets put in on support page with no answer and no response from their Twitter page. Disappointing. Split screen online with my 6 year old playing with her friends and mine was EVERYTHING
@Kreko you might have to temporarily turn off wifi but it should give you more options not to connect Epic user once it detects a connexion error.
@BCMT I feel for you. In the meantime if you have the physical version you could try deleting the software and turning off automatic updates prior to reinstalling. But if I remember well... Even the physical version requires a download on Switch vs PS4 and Xbox... You may be out of luck. I hope they fix it.
It feels a lot like Minecraft when it got updated so everyone could play online accross all platforms and they removed the option to manually save/recover in game. I have never played it since although I must have sunk 100+ hrs in it prior.
@WoomyNNYes hopefully they will soon Altho I've been told by support its not a priority fix at the moment .
@dil_power That's asinine. Why would they remove local multiplayer?!
Really seeming like the game was ruined based on what others have been saying, which is a shame.
I bought this in a sale ages ago but never got round to even launching it, never mind playing. Will it still recognise I'm a paid owner and give me the freebies, or did I need to get online and register before it went f2p for that? I'll be annoyed if I miss out, on principle.

@Antiriad2097 I think you will still get the stuff for buying it.
@WoomyNNYes I'd like to think that's the case, but it would be nice if it was confirmed. I can't be the only one with the question, and there are possibly other users out there like me who aren't aware the F2P launch date has passed.
@Kalmaro Having Nintendo online has basically been a waste of my money. So it can't cheapen it anymore. Something good really needs to be included with it for me to want to renew it next year.
@Antiriad2097 Launch it and find out. If you get the free stuff, there are a few couple things you'll receive:
"Est. 20xx" banner title option (banner titile= title below your username, which is in rocket league Profile options)
"faded cosmos" boost
Aftershock car
Aftershock engine sound
If you see these things in your inventory, I believe it means you got the free legacy content for buying the game.
@Kreko I'm sorry you are having issues... It worked for me... After connection issues screen. Still hate the new update overall. What a sh*tfest.
@Liam_Doolan
What happens to the people that payed for this when it wasn't free? How much did it cost before?
@RodSD64 You get legacy status. From the website:
Legacy Status
If you played Rocket League before the free to play update was released, you have Legacy status
Legacy status includes special loyalty reward items, including a Boost, Wheel, Banner, and a special Title that commemorates the year your account was created:
‘Faded Cosmos’ Boost (limited to accounts created prior to July 21)
‘Golden Cosmos’ Boost
‘Dieci-Oro’ Wheel
‘Huntress’ Player Banner
‘Est. 20XX’ Title
Legacy status holders also get special “Legacy” quality versions of every Common item available before the free to play changeover, as well as access to all non-licensed DLC items.
@Liam_Doolan
Thank you sir!
