The former Halo composer Martin "Marty" O'Donnell says he would love to one day work on music for The Legend of Zelda series. Speaking to the YouTube channel The Act Man yesterday, O'Donnell spoke about how he had played all of the Zelda games, and would happily compose music for them, if given the opportunity:
"I'd love to work on Zelda...I love Zelda, I've played all the Zeldas"
O'Donnell originally started out working on games like Riven (1997), Myth II (1998), Oni (2001), and after this he composed the iconic score for the Halo series, created music for Bungie's 2014 title Destiny, won a legal battle against his former employer, and co-founded Highwire Games.
Would you like to see Nintendo give a composer like Marty a chance to make music for a series like Zelda? About as close as we've got to this in recent times is Grant Kirkhope providing the music for the Banjo-Kazooie levels in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Danny Baranowsky providing the remixed soundtrack for Cadence of Hyrule. Tell us what you think below.

Yeah, I dont know about that 😂
Nice, I love all this Nintendo and Microsoft collaboration.
The Halo games have amazing soundtracks, so I would be interested in hearing some samples from him.
Not really newsworthy, pretty sure most composers for game OSTs would love that opportunity.
I don't see many people turning that offer down
tbh, based on what I've heard of his work, I kinda think he might work better in a Metroid game. Not just because of all the weird comparisons Halo and Metroid Prime got back in the day, but his stuff often makes me think of Metroid settings more if anything.
Halo 1 - 3/Reach had amazing soundtracks, and were one of the best things about those games, so I would have no problem with this
He is an amazing composer, I'd be down if they're even interested on someone outside of Japan.
Its nice to see the love between Team Xbox and Team Nintendo.
They should just marry, make a powerfull console with the best games from both sides and everyone is happy haha.
Maybe if Space Zelda ever gets off the ground?
But all jokes aside, I would love to hear his approach to Zelda. Halo's got one of the best soundtracks ever and Bungie were nuts to let him go.
And, because both he and Nintendo are based near Seattle, it's not nearly as unlikely as one might think...
@The-Chosen-one Microsoft has no amazing games.
Zelda benefits from uniquely Japanese composition. A Western composer would make it sound like yet another hammy medieval fantasy cliche.
The majority of western (specifically American) game studios have zero sense of subtlety or artistry. Zelda is beautiful because it is enriched with Japanese culture.
@MichaelHarvey @HappyMaskedGuy okay, enough of the name-calling. If you can't discuss it like adults then don't discuss it at all.
@HappyMaskedGuy, I'm sure if you open up to more video games and stop being so closed minded about it, you will have a really fun time. And I garuntee you that there is beauty and art in any video game if you look at the glass half full
@HappyMaskedGuy I see you’re just ignoring the Nintendo games with Western composers like Donkey Kong Country, which has one of the best soundtracks on the SNES. Plenty Western composers are innovative, Skyrim has a great ambient soundtrack that never falls into medieval tropes and Austin Wintory’s work on Journey was outstanding. Hell, Danny Baranowsky‘s work on CotN was so good, Nintendo were perfectly happy letting him remix Zelda music and they were great!
The music in the Halo series is maybe the number one reason of my love for this saga. It is SO EPIC, so beautifull...
This man on the ZELDA SAGA would do miracles !
I bloody hope not, the Halo soundtracks I know are awful; they're the equivalent of a Hans Zimmer score for films.
Id prefer him work on Metroid. Not like he isnt talented enough for Zelda, he is. Just that his style works A LOT better for Metroid imo.
@Kimyonaakuma Yeah but there are few, if any as talented as Marty.
@ShaiHulud The equivalent of one of the better film composers is bad how?
@nessisonett Read my comment. I said ‘the majority’ not ‘all’.
Think all of us here would love to work on Zelda 🤷🏻♂️ Half the world would probably like to 🤣
Oh his compositions would be a real treat to listen to with a full orchestra and choir or better yet a full collaboration with Koji Kondo!! Imagine!!!
@iMarkU To me, Zimmer writes mostly awful, predictable and tacky stuff (just like the Halo chap), but taste is subjective of course.
@HappyMaskedGuy I'm just saying that you shouldn't be so pesamistic all the time, and try new things
I’ve not done any research but I’d be willing to bet quite a high proportion of game devs would be happy to work on Zelda if they got the chance.
This doesn’t exactly surprise me...
Sounds like a desperate plea for a job
@Creature I've even played the Zeldas that aren't out yet. Better than anyone else. They told me I was good. Very good. The best Zelda player in the world.
Let's be honest here. Zelda, Breath of the Wild soundtrack was way more abstractive than it should. Its best piece of music was actually only in the promo trailer. New, fresh ideas wouldn't hurt at all.
@KoopaTheQuick Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Wind Waker screams the opposite.
@KoopaTheQuick Very much agreed.
Well then he needs to apply for a job with Nintendo
@nessisonett Bound by Flames's Olivier Deriviere put together this very eerie synth-pop sound for that soundtrack while paying honour to the fantasy genre. I'd love for him to get more work! He also did parts of the soundtrack to Vampyr which is on the Switch if you want to hear a sample of his work!

Give it a listen absolutely fantastic! And an example of a Western Composer who can do so much more than a "generic fantasy" soundtrack! He has a very wide range of bone chillingly fantastic work under his belt! Some people need to just be open minded.
@Yattaze He did more than Halo. Here is one of his most recent pieces that really shows he'd have the chops for Zelda if ever offered the job. He is such an amazing composer! <3 He is such a talent!

Been a while since I played Breath of the Wild but I don't remember it having much music at all. Hope they're at least giving us an option for it in the sequels, I like my games to have a variety of music in them.
@Yattaze you never know, he could try to compose fitting music for zelda, i mean they are a lot of good composers who compose for different kinds of games. BOTW's music wasn't anything to write home about, so, i see it as an opportunity to live up to the standards of classic zeldas, atmospheric, memorable music. this guy's got it!
Didn’t he also compose the Flintstone vitamin jingle?
EDIT: I just looked it up. Yes he did. Wow!
@Creature Stop making me want to like this
@wazlon Breath of the Wild nit having much music at all?! Bro wtf? You should probably play the game again cuz my god that's just wrong. I grew up playing Majora's Mask, then watching Ocarina of Time videos, and then playing Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess. Breath of the Wild's music is very close to surpassing Majora's Mask for me, and I love MM it's the reason why I'm still here and in love with gaming. I honestly want more people composing music for the zelda games later on, we need less looping music and more innovative pieces for different events in the game.
@Ultralink17 Will be revisiting Breath of the Wild at some point so will pay more attention to the music. It's just I can remember music from the other Zelda games but not Breath of the Wild for some reason, can remember the music when you're in a shrine.
@ShaiHulud I quite liked his work with Interstellar. Unforgettable soundtrack. I understand why you feel that way about his work; it's not for everyone. I do think Hans has a clever synaesthetic sense of how to turn what you see into a soundscape. It's not music I would listen to outside of a movie, but in the context of the film it works.
@Chlocean Yeah, you're right in saying that he mimics what you see into music. I'm not too fond of Mickey Mousing though, but I can see why people enjoy it.
@HappyMaskedGuy That's not true, just because the developers and composers are Japanese doesn't mean Legend of Zelda can't have medieval European influences. Medieval fantasy is the series' primary setting. Plenty of Koji Kondo's Legend of Zelda songs have medieval instruments with a medieval vibe such as OoT's Castle Town, WW's Legendary Hero, ALBW's Minigame Theme and Milk Bar songs, and many more.
