The Animal Crossing: New Horizons dataminer Ninji is at it again - this time with new information about the recent update that added the sly fox Redd to the game.
While many players originally thought there was a limit to the number of fake items on Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler, it seems this is not the case. In a series of tweets, Ninji reveals how you might not get any real art at all. Here's the full rundown:
As noted, there's a 10% chance of zero real works of art. It makes sense then that there have been some players who have reported leaving empty-handed. Ninji also mentions how there is a "20% chance" the game will guarantee you an item you haven't already donated to your museum - meaning it could take a while to fill this part of the museum.
Are you surprised to hear you can walk out of Redd's empty-handed? Leave a comment down below.

The last time he came to my island last week he only had fakes. It is really disappointing.
Yeah, he only had fakes on his most recent visit for me too.
Data mining, the farcical and counter-productive exercise of short circuiting the natural cycle of discovery. Truly seems like the embodiment of our ever present thirst to skip ahead to the good stuff.
In this case it mostly reaffirms the character of Redd, but nevertheless it would nice in many cases to know less about our journey through games than more.
He had 3 real when he cane to me. I was mad he had a fake though. Not cool.
How long has it been now since Redd has been available? I have 2 paintings in my museum and a statue in front of my house. At this rate it will actually take me more than a year to fill the art museum up.
Meanwhile I have 2 empty round stands in the fossil museum on the left hand mollusk side even though I've played every day and found 4 fossils every day. But still those 2 sit empty. I have a feeling it's only 1 fossil and they'll fill in the other automatically when I find it, seems like a lot of tables in that room filled in that way. About 40 each fish and insects.
Ha ha there's bidding wars on the AC Reddit trade boards whenever someone offers to sell real AND fake goods. Who's winning: Nintendo since you have to pay for their online service to visit other players.
I wish Redd would visit the island every day. It's not like he takes up a spot in the square, so he wouldn't prevent any other NPCs from showing up. Even if he showed up every day it would still take a while to finish the art exhibit. Seeing him once every 2 weeks for a chance of a real piece of art that I don't have just makes me feel like I'll never finish the museum.
There is something to be said for just enjoying a game without having to analyse every aspect, know every percentage, know every bit of data and every figure in the name of achieving maximum productivity for minimum effort. I mean if that's how you want to play by all by means play the way you want but don't forget to enjoy the game while your at it.
The nerve of this con artist. Freaking Redd, man. This dude blows.
He arrived on my island today. Only one genuine.
The other three were obviously fake even without checking online.
The two furniture items were already in my catalogue but not in those colours. Redd's two furniture items are also marked up by 50%.
@OptometristLime How about you just don't click on the article if you don't want to be spoiled? Otherwise, I don't see what you're so unhappy about, non of this affects you.
@bluemage1989 Some people like all of that stuff, to each their own. I don't see a problem as long as they are enjoying their purchase.
I’m not concerned about bringing only fakes sometimes. Fakes also have their uses.
What really concerns me if that he just never comes. Since he was made available he has come to my island just once. Just a single time!! That’s what really bothers me. All the other characters appear regularly each week, why is he different?
@maruse Odd. Redd has visited my island 3 times since his initial visit.
@rjejr I went about a week and a half needed the last fossil (was the shark tooth pattern for me). Finally just got it yesterday morning.
After 2 1/2 weeks, Redd finally came... with 4 fakes.
I visited a friend today that had 3 real ones. Guess it was his lucky day......or maybe mine lol.
Seriously these stats or his appearance rate need to be GREATLY adjusted.
I can understand why someone would be annoyed by data miners who spoil future content updates, but this is just the kind of stuff I'd want to see in a player's guide... "This is how this mechanic works." Since player's guides are increasingly useless, I have no problem with others picking up their slack.
@OptometristLime What is the natural cycle of discovery for this? Writing a journal with data entries for every Redd visit and derive those percentages after a couple of years?
@Kalmaro beautiful thing about the web, if you have a problem with my opinions you can skip right over those. Just like your advice with the article's themselves (which can easily have spoilers in the title). Hope that solves the problem for you.
Also I took special effort in my post to allude to the fact that data mining in this instance could be warranted, or at least the conclusion was beneficial and unlikely to be found in normal gameplay.
This is how Nintendo actively promotes timetravelling. And with all the time travelling around they can say: we should have anti-cheat measures as much as possible in play such as one island per switch. And with that they sell more switches.
Clever little girl, Nintendo, clever....
@OptometristLime I could say the same to you though, if you have a problem with the article, why not skip right over it?
I don't have a problem with your comment, I just didn't understand why you bothered to post in an article you don't seem to like. Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding your point.
I don’t care if he has fakes, can he just visit? I haven’t seen him since the first week...
@Kalmaro because it seems perfectly rational to me that I can have an opinion on something which I am not the primary consumer of. Since most of the content of this site I do like typically, it seems worthwhile for me to point out a sore spot. Obviously for others it may be less of a compelling issue which is just fine.
@OptometristLime No one is saying you can't have an opinion, I just question the logic of going to a place you don't want to be to complain about it.
I'm getting off topic though so I'll end it here. I was just curious about your motivations.
@Kalmaro yeah which is cool, I don't mind explaining myself. Kind of feels like you were playing moderator a bit there...
Guess nothing is clear on the interwebs though so, just two ships passing in the night.
I remember reading the same kind of debates when the first DVDs came out, with behind-the-scenes bonus content. A lot of people said it ruined the magic of movies. A lot of people also said they could choose not to watch them. Nobody's right, nobody's wrong.
Redd should be patched in an update, his appearances are far too scarce. I even don't even check whether he's around anymore.
I just wish he came on specific dates rather than random dates. His boat could easily be a second Nook's Cranny.
I made a second character on my island to ensure I get a real from Reed each time... guess that’s not entirely possible.
However this explains how there seemed to be 2 real ones yesterday. Luckily I bought both.
Datamine, datamine, datamine.
I check everyday for Redd at the secret beach, it must have been over a week since he was last there. It would be nice to see a bit more of him!
It's been 3 weeks since he last visited me. He had only fakes then. He finally came over again yesterday. He had only fakes AGAIN. He really needs a patch. This is just disheartening.
Can’t wait for them to add the DLC where if you have a toilet handy you can flush Redd’s fat head down it.
I will keep Time Travelling no matter what.
There is NO "What is done, is done."
I said "I can go back to the past or future whenever i want."
I take control the time i play.
I will NOT follow the normal time flow conducting me to play the game everyday because sometimes i cannot play Animal Crossing everyday.
Forcing player to keep playing everyday or i get punished by losing a villager is not a cool idea.
I need a Time Control to keep the game stay safe when i leave the game for long time.
That's why i need Time Travel, not just for a sake of getting quick result.
I don't want a change in my town without my acknowledge.
I don't want villagers cycling.
I don't want to lose my favorite villagers.
That's why i need to freeze the game to keep my island stay same and safe when i leave the game for long time.
@bluemage1989,
Exactly there is no rush for this game.
@Archius9,
Did not think of this, my daughter has a house on the island, she could buy art too, there are people opening accounts to put houses on their island to create cafe's etc, this could also be used to buy art etc.
@johnvboy you also get a second recipe bottle and shiny spot too
This article confused me with each capitalised word, could articles be altered?
Is Red sly or is he called Sly Red?
@Archius9,
Just bought two pieces of genuine artwork from Redd, Need to get started on the Museum as I only have one painting and one statue, and the statue I shot from a balloon, everything else has been fake.
If only he visited more often, it has been 4 weeks since his last visit for me
@ReWane There's no reason anybody should need or want those percentages....and besides, writing them down like you said, you'd probably have all the art collection complete before getting 1% towards working out this info....the natural cycle of discovery is just playing the damn game and finding what you find
@stuie1234 You can closely examine them to zoom in and then it is pretty clear.
@stuie1234,
I have all the fossils and quite a good amount of the fish and bugs, but my museum art gallery is lacking.
This wouldn’t be a problem if Redd were a weekly regular. But he only shows up once in a blue moon.
@Raccoonius Congrats. Did Blathers say anything about you finishing it? He's quite the chatterbox.
Saharah’s great, but I never buy anything from Kicks. Leif’s okay, but I’d rather he just set up a permanent shop. Redd needs to show up at least once a week, especially if he’s got nothing to sell sometimes.
Nintendo FIX THIS!
This is the second fake data-mine of animal crossing I see here. Never in this series was possible have two originals. And I dont think someway the producers are change it. Too, the rates can't work this way because "cof, cof" maybe are one (or 2)other factor which influence the rates. I just will say it: Reed always will have 3fake and 1 real to who play under certain conditions.
@rjejr To my surprise, he did not.
@maruse How do fakes have their uses?
@noswitchbutidc You can use them to decorate your house and the island, and some have (afaik, since I just have one) cool effects at night that make them look like they’re cursed or enchanted... So they’re not a total waste at all.
After one of my villager send me 1 fake sculpture I have not seen him on my island in a while.
Interesting snippet of information I didn't know it was possible for him to arrive with no genuine pieces.
We have been lucky so far, the few times Redd has arrived at one of our islands there has always been one genuine piece of art, it didn't surprise me to have a visit where there were two genuine pieces this happened many times when we played ACNL.
It did surprise me yesterday when he arrived at my island and had three genuine pieces, (No we don't T.T.) so it looks like not having any genuine art just balances the game a bit.
We haven't seen any af the haunted painting yet which is funny because the kids are more interested in finding those than actually finishing the collection at the museum.
@Raccoonius Bummer. Thanks anyway for the reply.
@Yorumi 5 to 20 years huh? Yeah that statue ain't moving from in front of my house anytime soon.
They should have Gulliver and the ghost spirit thing each give us art, I see them a heck of a lot more than I see Redd.
Sahara the blind loot box sellor could sell them blind as well, blind as in both we don't get to see them and we don't know if they're real or fake. I'd buy those, no rugs or anything else though, Nook's Cranny has way more than I can ever need. Which I only discovered a few days ago b/c I never thought to hit the R button while looking.
I wish they would guarantee one Redd visit per week. Wasn't that how it worked in New Leaf? He doesn't go in the plaza now so he's not using up the same spot another NPC visitor would need.
Two visits of all fakes in a row. That 20% chance of forcing a new painting is not much, but way more than I expected the game to give me.
I didn't understand anything about this.
But good for those who do, and I hope it helps them.
just so we're clear here you can still have fun with the game while also knowing the ins and outs of it. just cause youre a casual payer going with the flow of AC doesnt mean you should scoff at how other people want to play it
@maruse Good point. I added another human islander just to buy haunted works
@Cynas well you could create a couple more human players like i did... they only come out on the days redd is docked... to buy and donate any other real art......
@skycargav2000 I might try that eventually, right now my island is setup the way I like it though and more houses would ruin it. So far I've only had one real painting each time he has visited so it wouldn't have made a difference.
@Yorumi It's Saturday, that means KK Slider performing on our islands. Tomorrow is Daisy Mae and her turnips I no longer buy after a week of "decelerating" prices lost me 20,000 bells. This week on my island I had Gulliver, Labelle, Kicks, Leif and Sahara. Sahara I believe has been on my island every week without fail, and I refuse to buy anything sight unseen. Blind loot boxes should NOT be encouraged.
So that means on my island this past week I did nto have anybody who I consider to be useful or interesting, CJ, Flick or Redd. Flick did come last week so I didn't expect him this week, but I really thought CJ or Redd would visit. Nintendo either needs to let more than 1 visitor per day on the island or let me ban Sahara. I'm ok w/ CJ and Flick alternating weeks, but Redd needs to be every week b/c he already has random real vs fake art as it is.
People grow "fatigued" b/c Nintendo drags this game out way too much. I need my toy insects and fish.
@Markiemania95 I've had 2 visits recently and had all fakes for both visits... Thanks Redd.... TT^TT
@Yorumi "like if you have a 4 or 5 star rating you can have more visitors."
Ooh I like that, rewards for island improvements. My island is currently a forest, all you see are treetops. Except for the 1 area that's all boots, cans and tires and the other area that's all DYI recipes I already know. So my rating probably isn't very good, but I had 4 stars a month or so back.
I'd really like more visitors though. I was SOOOO F'in excited to have CJ show up today. 560 fish sold, 960,000 bells. Once every 3 weeks isn't really working for me. And now w/ the next fishing tournament in July I'm afraid he won't show up again until that. But that's sort of ok, I'm done hoarding fish now.
5 days until June, give me bathing suits or give me death.
@Yorumi I have several t-shirts and tanks and a few pairs of shorts but nothing I'd call "board shorts" or whatever the kids are calling bathing suits these days. I made 2 NY Mets baseball shirts I wear. Actually everybody on my island wears them as well. But I haven't seen anything I'd call "Hawaiian" like flowers and volcanoes and stuff. It may depend on if they consider June to be spring or summer in the game. I'm also waiting on lighting bugs/ fireflies - surely they will have them flash at night - and some big cicadas.
Though I'm a little worried they're setting all of June up as that wedding anniversary month, I don't care about wedding photos really, so maybe "summer" will have to wait until July. Wonder if the Nook boys will sell sunscreen?
@Yorumi When Mabel's opened I realized AC is all about the clothes, hence Happy Home Designer being it's own game, but I guess I don't spend that much time with it. I'm too busy being obsessed w/ the Nook Miles +. I have about 300,000 miles. I do put on a jacket at night, and a raincoat when it rains - though I wont' carry an umbrella b/c it takes up a slot and I'm always full - but I guess I care more about the weather than my look. Though when you have the gold armor and helmet what else do you need?
@Yorumi The bulk of my storage was taken up by fish until CJ finally arrived today, sold him 530 out of storage, another 40 caught today, for just over 1 million bells.
I do have too much fruit - about 240 each - and 2 dozen each cans, tires and shoes, but with 500 free spaces I won't worry about it too much. And no more fish hoarding, the Nook Bros can have them, and I'll fish less now, needed to pay off my basement, I hate debt, even in games.
Enjoy the clothing, sounds mostly stress free and enjoyable.
@Raccoonius Blathers must like me more than he likes you. 😉
@rjejr Oh that two-timing fiend! He didn't say boo to me, and I checked all the spots in the museum to make sure they're full.
@Friendly Nintendo yes, Redd's spawn rate has clearly been dictated by Nintendo's C-suite execs as part of an elaborate sales strategy. Wake up, sheeple!
@Raccoonius Maybe you're missing 1 of the little ones in front of the T-Rex? I think there are 2 there, and a little 1 in front of the dimetredon. I think the cenozoic back room is all just the big skeletons.
@rjejr None of the signs have the "Donations are appreciated" message they say (or whatever the exact wording is). Unless he did say something and I just powered through the dialogue.
@Raccoonius "Unless he did say something and I just powered through the dialogue."
I'd go w/ that. I looked today - somebody else I know also thinks they are missing just 1 but they can't figure out where - and there are 2 little ones in front of the T-rex, footprint and excrement, 1 creature by the dimetredon and 1 on the corner between those 3. The only other small one is the ape skull in the far back corner behind the mammals, which is on an obvious table so I'd think you'd notice.
So my money is on what you said - Unless he did say something and I just powered through the dialogue.
@rjejr I actually checked today and found that I am indeed missing one. It's the torso of the first flying dino, the Quetz-something-or-rather. How exactly missed it when doing the final check, I have no idea.
@Raccoonius The Quetzalcoatlus is HUGE, I put one outside on my island, that's a funny one to miss. 😂 Well, maybe you just thought it's wings were coming out of the pteradon, they are right next to each other. And well, I always thought it was kinda lame we can't move the camera to look around in the museum.
Good luck finding it.
@rjejr Thanks! I'm gonna need all the luck on this one. I don't know how I missed it, but I'm gonna go with your theory. Must've been a case of mistaken identity.
@Raccoonius I checked today, and I don't know how you missed it. It's a big huge fossil on the ground, pteradon is flying high, you can hardly even seen it. If you have both wings but not the body it would be very obvious, if, and I think that's the real problem, if you ever had any reason to go back that far. Though if you are doing the stamps, I've done 13 out of 14, missed 1, there is a stamp right in front of it some days, but it's just really a big black spot way back in a corner. Museum needs camera control like our homes. Lazy devs.
@rjejr I have the wings, just not the torso of the Quetz. I haven't spent much time in the fossil section of the museum, so guess I got used to seeing the wings and figured the torso was there. I agree on the camera issue. Just learned the other day that there's the comet up in the top corner hanging from the ceiling.
@Raccoonius Yeah, it's like they put that comet up there knowing you can ONLY see it if you get that 1 stamp about it. smh
@rjejr Camera control in the museum and either access to our storage, or at least additional inventory space, are two of my biggest hopes in future updates.
@Raccoonius Inventory space has ALWAYS been a pet peeve of mine. I played Kingdoms of Amular Reckoning on PS3 and 80% of my time was frikkin' inventory management. Just even getting another 10 slot in our pockets would help a lot based on the size of our islands.
My 1,600 storage house was full too, but CJ came 1 day and I sold him over 500 fish, Flick the next got 300 insects, so I'm good now, just no more bugs or fish.
But there is so much more they can do in the way of quality of life improvements. That one fake Direct had a lot of great ideas, and simple stuff. Nothing insane like making it into Mario Kart of Halo, just buying or crafting more than 1 thing at a time. Easy peasy. So it goes.
@rjejr I struggle with inventory space, especially in RPGs. I'm definitely a hoarder in those games.
Now that shark season is upon the North (already snagged a few), I would like to keep them in storage for CJ, but he's been so infrequent lately that it's not completely worth filling my storage space.
I saw that fake Direct. Would absolutely love it if we get a multi-craft option. Had enough iron to make 47 iron garden chairs when they were the hot item a week or so ago. Let me tell you, that took a fair bit of time. My poor thumb.
I got Redd first chance I had after the update, and still haven't seen him since, and have been checking every day. Unless he can show up Saturday, I missed a couple Saturdays of not playing so far.
@Raccoonius Wow, how many bells for a hot item iron garden chair that you did that? Most I ever made were 20 giant clam shell beds, they went for like 20,000 bells each, give or take, 408,000 bells total.
I got a great white and whale shark this morning. They're in my living room now but I'll give them to the museum. Not worried about CJ, I'll probably never catch another, still have only ever caught 2 tuna, 1 marlin (or maybe it was a swordfish?) and 1 giant trevally.
We'll at least it's June and something new. Paid off my basement this morning which means I really don't have to care about bells anymore anyway, have about 3 million now.
@rjejr The hot item bonus bumped the chair value up to 4500 each, so walked out with 211,500 bells.
I went to a NMT island last night and snagged a great white, 3 Hammerheads, a ribbon eel, 2 suckerfish, a whale shark, and a saw shark. Wasn't a bad haul, donated to museum and sold the two spare hammerheads.
I have yet to pay off my basement. Keep spending on the turnips with not a whole lotta luck in return. Last week I bought 90000 worth at 93 each, gambled to Saturday morning and sold them for 27 each.
@Raccoonius "Last week I bought 90000 worth at 93 each, gambled to Saturday morning and sold them for 27 each."
That's almost exactly what happened to me. Then somebody explained to me the system is rigged - I stupidly thought the prices were random - and some weeks the prices continue to get lower each and every time, some weeks they are much higher. So I stopped, b/c rigged isn't for me. And I also won't buy blind loot box rugs from Sahara.
Good trip to the island. I've been wasting my trips to take wedding anniversary photos. But I have caught 1 great white, my first fish this month, 2 whale sharks, 1 saw shark, a hammerhead, and a ribbon eel which is just the weirdest thing. Also a couple of sicmar saddle and a dorado. And many many lightning bugs. 😂 Nice of them to add fins to the shark shadows. And that eel shadow was so weird, I just watched it for 15-20 seconds. But now I'm almost bored again. Time to spend my 3mil bells moving stuff, after I chop down a couple of hundred trees, my island is basically an orchard and the villagers are complaining they are getting lost in the woods. That's what Isabelle told me anyway.
@rjejr I'm not a fan of Sahara either.
Yeah the island was good to me. I've been using that "trick" to get better NMT islands by making the Dodo blush. Still not sure how much I buy into it, but I haven't been to bamboo island in quite a bit. The shark fins have been a thing since the early games, but definitely helpful. Don't want any more sea bass 😠. The shadow for the ribbon eel is pretty neat. Used to be really thin in New Leaf. Digging the change.
Had Flick visit today, so got him to make me a firefly model. Didn't really catch much else.
@Raccoonius I'm all about the Flick and CJ models. Too bad they only come once every 2 weeks or so. Though last week they came on back to back days, go figure. Still haven't seen Redd in about a month, his ship must have sunk.
Orchid mantis, mantis, ladybug, violin beetle, great Elizabethan butterfly (made that name up but you'd know it if you saw it, but not THAT big, Flick has no eye for scale)
sea bass - b/c it was my first time and the only fish I had 3 of on me, b/c sea bass, and I didn't know how this worked - oarfish, snapping turtle, the others are furniturenext up was gonna be the hermit crab but liek you firefly it is, next fish is likely a zebra turkeyfish unless I catch 2 more great whites or hammerheads before he comes back. Whale shark is cool but too brown.
@rjejr Huh, I was expecting the oarfish model to be bigger. I started with the mantis (the praying mantis being my favourite bug), honeybee, snail, seahorse, squid, horse mackerel, and now the firefly.
I finally had Redd show up two days ago, after about a two week absence. Wasn't a bad day for art. Leo sent me a Tremendous Statue in the mail, and Redd had a legit Rock Head Statue.
@Raccoonius I was so excited for a huge oarfish toy, then that little thing arrived in my mail. I still like it but felt gyped. Then huge butterfly arrived last week, and it's so big it won't even fit on a 2x2 table. I don't think it's too wide, I think it's too high. That game has a really lowing ceiling for stuff.
Do we EVER get shelves to display all of our stuff? Like those mugs and small candles? I have plenty of table space but could really use some 3 high shelves. Though I suppose the interior arrangement system couldn't figure that out. Kinda lame.
You made a horse mackerel toy? That's like #47 on my list. Actually I take that back, I would just keep making more of everything else. Well if he'd let us, never know the limitations w/ AC.
I spent 30 minutes running around my island this morning trying to find somebody, have never had a day w/o a visitor so thought this could be a first. Finally found Gulliver washed ashore. After talking to him I went to sleep next to him on a pool lounge chair.
@rjejr I'd feel pretty shortchanged too. The whale shark might be neat for a model, but that's a hefty profit lost.
I don't think there were shelves to display stuff on in the past games. There's display stands similar to what the museum uses, but not actually shelves/cabinets. Would be cool though, especially for the Happy Home Academy awards.
Gulliver took a week break from my island, visited, and now it's been about a week and a half. I've been spending my morning trying to track down either a dog or rabbit on a Nook Ticket Island to move in. Rocco just bailed.
@Raccoonius "morning trying to track down either a dog or rabbit"
I was so confused by that, I thought you meant like an actual dog or rabbit for a pet. 😂
I've been pretty cool w/ whoever wants to come and go - the new girl is a Playboy Bunny and runs a Playboy Club on my island - but 1 guy, Hippfuex, in a private school ivy league wannabe jacket - was at the campsite asking to stay and I was like no way jack. I did have 3 amiibo cards so that sped up the turnover I think, 2 of them bolted pretty quick.
Yes, I do tweet AC photos every day.
@rjejr Haha nope, just in-game ones. The wife and I are trying to have at least one islander of each personality, then whatever remaining spots can be filled by whoever. She's new to the series, whereas I started with Wild World, went back to GameCube AC, then continued with each new game. I have favourite villagers/islanders I'd like to have, but I've handed the reins over to her.
Photos are pretty neat 👍
